These characteristics can be exploited for the design of innovative optical devices based on ultrafast switching potentially in the THz modulation bandwidth. In this study, the optical response of one‐dimensional photonic crystals incorporating colloidal nanoparticles of a highly doped semiconductor such as indium tin oxide (ITO) is investigated, taking into consideration the angular dependence of the photonic band gap and the position dependence of the photonic band gap on the light‐induced tunability of the ITO doping.

Energy storage systems (ESSs) can be coupled to the CIG either on the DC or the AC side of the power converter. When placed on the DC side, the ESS can provide damping of the variability in the generation but would require significant modification to the wind turbine hardware. The solution with an ESS connected to the AC side is simpler to implement with existing wind turbines but fails to provide damping of the CIG generation. This paper proposes a grid forming control strategy, based on virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control, which allows the ESS installed at the AC-side of the converter to have the same features and dynamic behaviour as those obtained from placement on the DC-side of the converter. In addition, the proposed control can also limit the exchanged power of the ESS within its rating for a safe operation. The proposed control is validated via a detailed Electro-Magnetic Transient (EMT) model and its impact on the grid is quantified via the case study of the All-Island Irish transmission system. Simulation results show that only a small ESS capacity can ensure that the frequency variance satisfies the grid code requirement even in the situation of a very high CIG penetration.

Abstract The feasibility of reusing waste materials as an inexpensive sorbent to remove volatile organic compounds from gaseous waste streams has been demonstrated. Ashes from wood-chips were tested as sorbent materials for VOCs removal with a PTR-ToF-MS instrument. Both scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and BET analysis were used to identify the structural characteristics, elemental composition and surface area of the tested ashes respectively. Most of the tentatively identified compounds were less strongly adsorbed by wet ash: thiols, siloxanes, carbonyl compounds and terpenes. Hydrogen sulfide and alcohols show improving removal performance in wet conditions. These results are related to the water solubility properties. Siloxanes were tentatively identified and monitored with PTR-ToF-MS. This demonstrates how this instrument is a suitable tool for simultaneously providing a multitude of analysis for rapid in situ monitoring of fuel contaminants. Considering the low cost, and the recycling of environmental pollutants, wood ashes are a possible choice for VOCs removal from biogas.

We first prove, in the context of a simplified competition–diffusion model, that there exists a stationary solution showing that the two species coexist in a transition zone. What happens then if, owing to climate change, the environmental profile moves with constant speed in space? We show here that, when the speed with which the environmental condition shifts exceeds the Fisher invasion speed of the advancing species, an expanding gap will form. We raise the question of whether such a phenomenon has been or can be observed.

Here we present unequivocal experimental proof that microscale cofactor- and membrane-less, direct electron transfer based enzymatic fuel cells do produce significant amounts of electrical energy in human lachrymal liquid (tears). 100 μm diameter gold wires, covered with 17 nm gold nanoparticles, were used to fashion three-dimensional nanostructured microelectrodes, which were biomodified with Corynascus thermophilus cellobiose dehydrogenase and Myrothecium verrucaria bilirubin oxidase as anodic and cathodic bioelements, respectively. The following characteristics of miniature glucose/oxygen biodevices operating in human tears were registered: 0.57 V open-circuit voltage, about 1 μW cm(-2) maximum power density at a cell voltage of 0.5 V, and more than 20 h operational half-life. Theoretical calculations regarding the maximum recoverable electrical energy can be extracted from the biofuel and the biooxidant, glucose and molecular oxygen, each readily available in human lachrymal liquid, fully support our belief that biofuel cells can be used as electrical power sources for so called smart contact lenses.

We studied thallium (Tl) isotope fractionation in white mustard grown hydroponically at different Tl doses. Thallium isotope signatures in plants indicated preferential incorporation of the light 203Tl isotope during Tl uptake from the nutrient solution. Negative isotope fractionation was even more pronounced in dependence on how much the available Tl pool decreased. This finding corresponds to the concept of isotope overprinting related to a high contamination level in the growing media (solution or soil). Regarding Tl translocation in plants, we observed a large Tl isotope shift with an enrichment in the heavy 205Tl isotope in the shoots relative to the roots in treatments with low/moderate solution Tl concentrations (0.01/0.05 mg Tl/L), with the corresponding α205/203Tl fractionation factors of ˜1.007 and 1.003, respectively. This finding is probably a consequence of specific (plant) reactions of Tl replacing K in its cycle. The formation of the S-coordinated Tl(I) complexes, potentially affecting both Tl accumulation and Tl isotope fractionation in plants, however, was not proven in our plants, since we did not have indication for that on the basis of X-ray absorption spectroscopy, suggesting that Tl was mainly present as free/hydrated Tl+ ion or chemically bound to O-containing functional groups.

WSN nodes are in general battery-powered, thereby and efficient usage of their energy budget is of paramount importance to avoid performance degradation in IoT applications. To this end, this chapter proposes techniques to manage the WSN nodes’ power consumption. The aim of the first technique is to minimize the transmitted power for a given quality of service requirement at the receiver side. To this end, a power control is considered at each WSN node as well as the use of multiple distributed access points at the receiver side. The second technique to reduce the WSN energy consumption is energy harvesting (EH). Namely, the use of artificial light EH is considered to extend the WSN lifetime. Thus, an experimental setup based on a photovoltaic cell, a boost converter and a commercial WSN node is presented. It is shown that under certain settings it is possible to extend the WSN node’s lifetime without bound, when the transmission time period is above a certain threshold.

We calculate the carbon leakage rate when EU undertakes a unilateral climate policy and we assess the importance of the competitiveness channel on carbon leakage. Our analysis is global and mirrors energy and climate policies and commitments that are currently announced at country level. The effectiveness of possible measures to mitigate carbon leakage is also evaluated and the results emphasize on the importance of the size of the group of countries participating in the GHG mitigation effort. The analysis is based on the results obtained using the GEM-E3 model, a global multi-sector and multi-country computable general equilibrium model. It is found that total carbon leakage is around 28%, over the 2015–2050 period, when the EU acts alone with moderate Armington trade substitution elasticity values; leakage rates are found to increase when assuming higher trade elasticities. The size and composition, in terms of GHG and energy intensities, of the group of regions undertaking emission reductions matter for carbon leakage. The paper finds that the leakage is significantly reduced when China joins the mitigation effort. If the USA joins the EU effort, the leakage rate drops only to 25% and if alternatively China joins the EU the leakage rate drops to 3% over the 2015–2050 period. This is attributed to both the market size of China and to the energy intensity features of its production. Chemicals and metals are industries prone to higher leakage rates.

Espresso coffee grounds constitute a residue which is produced daily in considerable amounts, and is often pointed out as being potentially interesting for plant nutrition. Two experiments (incubations and field experiments) were carried out to evaluate the potential nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) supply for carrot (Daucus carota L.), spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) nutrition.Immobilisation of nitrogen and phosphorus was detected in all the incubations and, in the field experiments, germination and yield growth were decreased by the presence of espresso coffee grounds, in general for all the species studied.The study showed an inhibition of N and P mineralisation and a reduction of plant germination and growth. Further research is required to determine whether this is related to the immobilising capacity of the residue or possibly due to the presence of caffeine.

Energy storage systems (ESSs) can be coupled to the CIG either on the DC or the AC side of the power converter. When placed on the DC side, the ESS can provide damping of the variability in the generation but would require significant modification to the wind turbine hardware. The solution with an ESS connected to the AC side is simpler to implement with existing wind turbines but fails to provide damping of the CIG generation. This paper proposes a grid forming control strategy, based on virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control, which allows the ESS installed at the AC-side of the converter to have the same features and dynamic behaviour as those obtained from placement on the DC-side of the converter. In addition, the proposed control can also limit the exchanged power of the ESS within its rating for a safe operation. The proposed control is validated via a detailed Electro-Magnetic Transient (EMT) model and its impact on the grid is quantified via the case study of the All-Island Irish transmission system. Simulation results show that only a small ESS capacity can ensure that the frequency variance satisfies the grid code requirement even in the situation of a very high CIG penetration.

Abstract The feasibility of reusing waste materials as an inexpensive sorbent to remove volatile organic compounds from gaseous waste streams has been demonstrated. Ashes from wood-chips were tested as sorbent materials for VOCs removal with a PTR-ToF-MS instrument. Both scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and BET analysis were used to identify the structural characteristics, elemental composition and surface area of the tested ashes respectively. Most of the tentatively identified compounds were less strongly adsorbed by wet ash: thiols, siloxanes, carbonyl compounds and terpenes. Hydrogen sulfide and alcohols show improving removal performance in wet conditions. These results are related to the water solubility properties. Siloxanes were tentatively identified and monitored with PTR-ToF-MS. This demonstrates how this instrument is a suitable tool for simultaneously providing a multitude of analysis for rapid in situ monitoring of fuel contaminants. Considering the low cost, and the recycling of environmental pollutants, wood ashes are a possible choice for VOCs removal from biogas.

We first prove, in the context of a simplified competition–diffusion model, that there exists a stationary solution showing that the two species coexist in a transition zone. What happens then if, owing to climate change, the environmental profile moves with constant speed in space? We show here that, when the speed with which the environmental condition shifts exceeds the Fisher invasion speed of the advancing species, an expanding gap will form. We raise the question of whether such a phenomenon has been or can be observed.

Here we present unequivocal experimental proof that microscale cofactor- and membrane-less, direct electron transfer based enzymatic fuel cells do produce significant amounts of electrical energy in human lachrymal liquid (tears). 100 μm diameter gold wires, covered with 17 nm gold nanoparticles, were used to fashion three-dimensional nanostructured microelectrodes, which were biomodified with Corynascus thermophilus cellobiose dehydrogenase and Myrothecium verrucaria bilirubin oxidase as anodic and cathodic bioelements, respectively. The following characteristics of miniature glucose/oxygen biodevices operating in human tears were registered: 0.57 V open-circuit voltage, about 1 μW cm(-2) maximum power density at a cell voltage of 0.5 V, and more than 20 h operational half-life. Theoretical calculations regarding the maximum recoverable electrical energy can be extracted from the biofuel and the biooxidant, glucose and molecular oxygen, each readily available in human lachrymal liquid, fully support our belief that biofuel cells can be used as electrical power sources for so called smart contact lenses.

We studied thallium (Tl) isotope fractionation in white mustard grown hydroponically at different Tl doses. Thallium isotope signatures in plants indicated preferential incorporation of the light 203Tl isotope during Tl uptake from the nutrient solution. Negative isotope fractionation was even more pronounced in dependence on how much the available Tl pool decreased. This finding corresponds to the concept of isotope overprinting related to a high contamination level in the growing media (solution or soil). Regarding Tl translocation in plants, we observed a large Tl isotope shift with an enrichment in the heavy 205Tl isotope in the shoots relative to the roots in treatments with low/moderate solution Tl concentrations (0.01/0.05 mg Tl/L), with the corresponding α205/203Tl fractionation factors of ˜1.007 and 1.003, respectively. This finding is probably a consequence of specific (plant) reactions of Tl replacing K in its cycle. The formation of the S-coordinated Tl(I) complexes, potentially affecting both Tl accumulation and Tl isotope fractionation in plants, however, was not proven in our plants, since we did not have indication for that on the basis of X-ray absorption spectroscopy, suggesting that Tl was mainly present as free/hydrated Tl+ ion or chemically bound to O-containing functional groups.

WSN nodes are in general battery-powered, thereby and efficient usage of their energy budget is of paramount importance to avoid performance degradation in IoT applications. To this end, this chapter proposes techniques to manage the WSN nodes’ power consumption. The aim of the first technique is to minimize the transmitted power for a given quality of service requirement at the receiver side. To this end, a power control is considered at each WSN node as well as the use of multiple distributed access points at the receiver side. The second technique to reduce the WSN energy consumption is energy harvesting (EH). Namely, the use of artificial light EH is considered to extend the WSN lifetime. Thus, an experimental setup based on a photovoltaic cell, a boost converter and a commercial WSN node is presented. It is shown that under certain settings it is possible to extend the WSN node’s lifetime without bound, when the transmission time period is above a certain threshold.

We calculate the carbon leakage rate when EU undertakes a unilateral climate policy and we assess the importance of the competitiveness channel on carbon leakage. Our analysis is global and mirrors energy and climate policies and commitments that are currently announced at country level. The effectiveness of possible measures to mitigate carbon leakage is also evaluated and the results emphasize on the importance of the size of the group of countries participating in the GHG mitigation effort. The analysis is based on the results obtained using the GEM-E3 model, a global multi-sector and multi-country computable general equilibrium model. It is found that total carbon leakage is around 28%, over the 2015–2050 period, when the EU acts alone with moderate Armington trade substitution elasticity values; leakage rates are found to increase when assuming higher trade elasticities. The size and composition, in terms of GHG and energy intensities, of the group of regions undertaking emission reductions matter for carbon leakage. The paper finds that the leakage is significantly reduced when China joins the mitigation effort. If the USA joins the EU effort, the leakage rate drops only to 25% and if alternatively China joins the EU the leakage rate drops to 3% over the 2015–2050 period. This is attributed to both the market size of China and to the energy intensity features of its production. Chemicals and metals are industries prone to higher leakage rates.

Espresso coffee grounds constitute a residue which is produced daily in considerable amounts, and is often pointed out as being potentially interesting for plant nutrition. Two experiments (incubations and field experiments) were carried out to evaluate the potential nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) supply for carrot (Daucus carota L.), spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) nutrition.Immobilisation of nitrogen and phosphorus was detected in all the incubations and, in the field experiments, germination and yield growth were decreased by the presence of espresso coffee grounds, in general for all the species studied.The study showed an inhibition of N and P mineralisation and a reduction of plant germination and growth. Further research is required to determine whether this is related to the immobilising capacity of the residue or possibly due to the presence of caffeine.
