The system is based on ethanol steam reformation to hydrogen that is used in polymer electrolyte fuel cells to produce electricity. We introduce the system design and overall system specifications, and report the experimental process of defining specifications for the produced hydrogen quality, a key variable affecting the final system cost, efficiency and durability. Results from development of individual subsystems are also presented together with discussion on the complete system integration.

The two-port network model has been extensively used to analyze microwave circuits, and identical principles have been applied to WPT. The standard gain parameters defined for the two-port networks are critically analyzed with regards to WPT systems. The usefulness and the practical limitations of the gain parameters are highlighted. In addition to power transfer efficiency (PTE), an alternative gain parameter, square voltage gain is defined to estimate the power transfer capability of the WPT system. The proposed performance indices are then computed in terms of generalized two-port network parameters along with a generalized optimization methodology. A case study is presented for the optimization of a WPT system with a repeater.

The shift towards a sustainability-driven society includes changes to the educational system, business operations, innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems as well as policymaking. Moreover, such a shift demands particularly a combination of top-down policy-making initiatives and bottom-up social entrepreneur-driven changes. Social innovation and entrepreneurship are providing solutions for globally recognized social and sustainability challenges such as poverty, education, environmental and climate change, peace support – worldwide yet also in the particularly challenging context of developing economies. We aim to showcase the best practices of social and sustainability-oriented innovation and entrepreneurship in the context of developing economies. In particular, we address the question of how social entrepreneur and innovator with bottom-up ideas could complement the top-down policymaking initiatives. Our design implies qualitative research aiming to disseminate the inspiring story of a social innovative enterprise, which represents a successful example of complementing policy-making efforts. Accordingly, our findings contribute to the literature on social innovation and entrepreneurship in the context of developing economies and simultaneously informs social entrepreneurs and policymakers on potential opportunities for synergy in their efforts. Today, major share of electricity in Baltic countries is produced from fossil fuels. Over the past years, the increasing penetration of renewable energy systems intensified in order to meet the European targets. In particular, installing wind power dramatically rises as a result of a great potential in Northern Europe. This paper attempts to provide an overview of the possible impacts of growing wind power on market power potential in Baltic countries’ electricity market. The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), which is a common measure of market concentration, is chosen to conduct this exploratory study. HHI index trend in Baltic over the years is evaluated and compared with the rise of wind power. The results show how Baltic area is a highly concentrated marketplace, but wind power is partly changing this.

Our continuing research focuses on the development of new advanced sensor technologies that are cost-effective, reliable, and efficient for the early detection of faults in order to predict impending arc-flash occurrences in mediumvoltage and low-voltage switchgear and controlgear. More extensive and detailed measurements regarding significant defects that lead to an arc-flash event have been completed since the original work in Part I was completed. A more detailed analysis of the results of this additional testing is presented in this paper. It has been documented that the two major noncontact causes that lead to an arc-flash event in switchgear are insulation degradation and thermal stresses. This paper covers the detailed measurement results under both of these conditions. New sensor technologies for both the partial discharge measurement and the thermal detection are introduced and evaluated. An effective signal processing technique, which is needed for extracting the essential indication of a developing fault, is also presented. Finally, this paper outlines how a preemptive arc detection system can be connected to protection, the programmable logic controller, or the supervisory control and data acquisition.

District heating (DH) is a significant technology for improving the energy efficiency of heating systems in communities, because it enables waste heat sources to be utilised economically and therefore significantly reduces the environmental impacts of power generation. As a result of new and more stringent construction regulations for buildings, the heat demands of individual buildings are decreasing and more energy-efficient heating systems have to be developed. In this study, the energy efficiency of a new DH system which includes both a new control system called mass flow control and a new network design called a ring network is examined. A topology in the Helsinki region is studied by using a commercial DH network modelling tool, Grades Heating. The district heating network is attached to a wood-burning heat station which has a heat recovery system in use. Examination is performed by means of both technical and economic analysis. The new non-linear temperature programme that is required is adopted for supply and return temperatures, which allows greater temperature cooling and smaller flow rates. Lower district heating water temperatures are essential when reducing the heat losses in the network and heat production. Mass flow control allows smaller pressure drops in the network and thus reduces the pumping power. The aim of this study was to determine the most energy-efficient DH water supply temperatures in the case network. If the ring network design is utilised, the district heating system is easier to control. As a result the total heat consumption within the heating season is reduced compared to traditional DH systems. On the basis of the results, the new DH system is significantly more energy-efficient in the case network that was examined than the traditional design. For example, average energy losses within the constraints (which consist of heat losses, pumping energy, and surplus energy from the heat recovery system) are reduced from 4.4% to 3.1%.

Today increasing amount of smart metering data is available enabling the development of enhanced data-driven models for short-term load forecasting. Until now, a plethora of models have been developed ranging from simple linear regression models to more advanced models such as (artificial) neural networks (NNs) and support vector machines (SVMs). Despite the relatively high accuracy obtained, the acceptance of purely data-driven models such as NN models is still remained limited due to their complexity and nontransparent nature. Therefore it is important to develop optimization schemes, which can be used to facilitate the selection of appropriate model structure resulting good forecasting accuracy with low complexity. This study presents an optimization scheme based on multi-objective genetic algorithm (GA) for designing data-driven models for short-term forecasting of electric loads. The optimization scheme is demonstrated for designing the conventional NN/MLP model using real smart metering data and weather measurements. The optimal NN model structures are identified and analyzed in terms of model complexity and forecasting accuracy.

Battery electric buses are inherently more energy efficient than diesel buses and the efficiency can be further increased by different methods. This paper evaluates the key factors that influence on the energy consumption of battery electric buses. A simulation model of a generic electric bus was developed in the Autonomie software. Simulations were carried out in different conditions including typical driving cycles and different climate conditions. Specific focus was given for minimizing the energy consumption by predictive driving. The simulation results were thoroughly analyzed in order to understand better the most efficient methods to improve energy consumption. According to the simulation results, the high level of auxiliary power (cold and hot climate conditions) increases the energy consumption significantly. There is a substantial variation of consumption between different driving cycles. This variation is mainly caused by the auxiliary power, transmission losses and mechanical braking. It was also observed that there is a strong linear correlation between driving aggressiveness and energy consumption.
