The decomposition was accomplished by reducing the pressure on a hydrate slurry in water to a value below the three-phase equilibrium pressure at the reactor temperature. The data were obtained at temperatures from 274 to 283 K and pressures from 0.17 to 6.97 MPa. The stirring rates were high enough to eliminate mass-transfer effects. Analysis of the data indicated that the decomposition rate was proportional to the particle surface area and to the difference in the fugacity of methane at the equilibrium pressure and the decomposition pressure. The proportionality constant showed an Arrhenius temperature dependence. An estimate of the hydrate particle diameters in the experiments permitted the development of an intrinsic model for the kinetics of hydrate decomposition.

Cabeza; Albert Castell; Antoni Gil; Eduard Oró;Abstract Thermal energy storage (TES) systems are growing to a relevant role in solar cooling applications. Hence, high energy density is a desirable property of the TES system. Phase change materials (PCM) helps to increase this characteristic. A high temperature pilot plant able to test different types of TES systems and materials was designed and built at the University of Lleida (Spain). This pilot plant is composed mainly of three parts: heating system, cooling system, and different storage tanks. Two identical storage tanks based on the shell-and-tubes heat exchanger, one of them including 196 squared fins in the bundle of the tubes and the other without, were experimentally tested. Hydroquinone was selected as the storage material, having a latent heat of 205 kJ/kg and a phase change temperature between 168 and 173 °C. The aim of this paper is to test experimentally, and compare the average effectiveness of the TES systems analyzed using PCM for solar cooling and refrigeration applications. It was found out that for the same tank configurations (shell-and-tubes) even changing drastically the dimensions of the tank or the number and the diameter of the tubes, the average effectiveness curve proposed in the literature fits well with the results showed here.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The introduction of new light-duty vehicle emission limits to comply under real driving conditions (RDE) is pushing the diesel engine manufacturers to identify and improve the technologies and strategies for further emission reduction. The latest technology advancements on the after-treatment systems have permitted to achieve very low emission conformity factors over the RDE, and therefore, the biggest challenge of the diesel engine development is maintaining its competitiveness in the trade-off “CO<sub>2</sub>-system cost” in comparison to other propulsion systems. In this regard, diesel engines can continue to play an important role, in the short-medium term, to enable cost-effective compliance of CO<sub>2</sub>-fleet emission targets, either in conventional or hybrid propulsion systems configuration. This is especially true for large-size cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">In this framework, a comprehensive approach covering the whole powertrain is of primary importance in order to simultaneously meet the performance, efficiency, noise and emission targets, and therefore, further development of the combustion system design and injection system represent important levers for additional improvements. For this purpose, a dedicated 0.5 dm<sup>3</sup> single-cylinder engine has been developed and equipped with, a state-of-the-art Euro 6 combustion system, and an advanced common rail fuel injection system (FIS) offering higher flexibility in terms of injection strategy and higher quantity accuracy. Three injector nozzles with different hydraulic flow rates (HF) have been selected and employed for the overall combustion process optimization.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">The optimization has been performed by means of an extensive DoE-based test campaign in which the engine and FIS operating parameters have been parametrized with the aim to carry out a proper combination in terms of HF and injection strategy. The results at partial load conditions evidence significant advantages in applying an advanced injection pattern, while the HF reduction can significantly improve the smoke emission and combustion noise without fuel consumption penalties. Therefore, a proper combination and optimization of the HF and injection strategy can provide low noise and engine-out smoke while maintaining the rated power performance targets.</div></div>

In this paper, a model-based analysis of a rotary regenerator is carried out with a major emphasis given to the development and implementation of mathematical models for the thermal analysis of the fluid and wheel matrix. The effect of heat conduction in the direction of the fluid flow is taken into account and the influence of variations in rotating speed of the wheel as well as other characteristics (ambient temperature, airflow and geometric size) on dynamic responses are analysed. The pyrolysis and the gasifier units are removable. In order to characterise the pyrolysis products before their gasification, experiments were carried out, for the first time onlywith the pyrolysis unit and this paper deals with the results obtained. The biomass used is Pinus pinaster. The parameters investigated are: temperature, residence time and biomass flow rate. It has been found that increasing temperature and residence time improve the cracking of tars, gas production and char quality (fixed carbon rate more than 90%, volatile matter rate less than 4%). The increase of biomass flow rate leads to a bad char quality. The efficiency of tar cracking, the quality and the heating value of the charcoal and the gases, indicate that: temperature between 650 °C and 750 °C, residence time of 30 min, biomass flow rate between 10 and 15 kg/h should be the most convenient experimental conditions to get better results from the experimental device and from the biomass pyrolysis process. The kinetic study of charcoal generation shows that the pyrolysis process, in experimental conditions, is a first-order reaction. The kinetic parameters calculated are comparable with those found by other researchers. (Resume d'auteur)

Abstract Wood pellets were pyrolyzed using a microwave oven and different microwave power, apparatus set-up and microwave absorbers (none, Fe, and carbon). Pyrolysis was realized in a short time in the presence of Fe or carbon while it was incomplete if the absorber was not present. Furthermore when the absorber was present the shape of the pellets remained unaltered while if the absorber was not employed pellets were disaggregated. Three fractions were collected from each pyrolysis: a gas, a liquid also called bio-oil and a solid called bio-char. The bio-oil contained two phases and they were quantitatively characterized through a GC/MS-FID procedure using an internal standard according to a previously reported method. HPLC/MS, FTIR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy were also employed for characterization of these liquids. Cellulose pyrolysis products were present in the upper phase such as water, acetic acid, furans (such as furfural), carbohydrates and their derivatives. Compounds from pyrolysis of lignin such as phenols and veratric acid were present in the bottom phase. The microwave assisted pyrolysis showed the possibility to efficiently convert wood pellets in different products. The main economical important components may be separated and used as chemicals, natural drugs or pesticides, while the remaining components, the solid and the gas may be used for energy production (solid and bio-oil). Solid may be also used for carbon sequestration.

Dual active bridge converters enable bidirectional power flow in buck and boost operating modes. This paper presents an advanced switching sequence and burst-mode strategy to balance conduction, switching, and magnetic losses under light, medium, and heavy loading conditions, leading to improved operating efficiency. The implementation of the switching sequence employs the natural state-plane trajectories of the converter and contributes to higher efficiency and the ability to perform burst mode. The proposed switching sequences improve the overall efficiency of the converter by enabling soft switching and adjusting the frequency to match the minimum RMS transformer current in the full operating range. Furthermore, it incorporates a fully controlled burst-mode switching sequence for light loading conditions to further extend the efficiency gains. As a result, maximum efficiency is obtained by taking advantage of all the possible switching structures of the converter. The analysis provides insight into the natural trajectories of the converter, which produce soft-switching transitions and enable the converter structures to achieve the target operating point directly. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the benefits of the switching sequence and illustrate the burst-mode operation.

This study investigates the influence of these process parameters on the electrical efficiency of the genset (ηglobal), the electrical engine efficiency (ηengine), the cold gas efficiency (CGE), and the syngas composition. Experimental tests were carried out by varying the moisture content from 11% to 23% and the electrical power from 4.7 kW to 12.8 kW on a commercial gasifier equipped with precise measuring tools. The increase of the performance when the electrical load is increased or when the moisture content in the wood chips is decreased is both quantified and discussed. Such behaviour was mainly explained by differences in engine filling rates and reactor temperatures.

Electrochemical capacitors, called supercapacitors (SCs) or ultracapacitors, are devices conveniently used for embedded electrical energy management owing to their huge capacitance, low internal resistance and flexible control through power electronic conversion. This paper proposes a main power supply of hybrid Wind Generator (WG)–SC within the train station for feeding the traction onboard SC through specified limited feeding transit durations. Onboard SCs provide the train with the requested start–up self–energy. The hybrid WG–SCs system is an environmental–friendly source that enables the independency on national grid and guarantees an efficient bidirectional power transfer for energy management with enhanced dynamic performance. Therefore, the dynamic modelling and the experimental analysis of the modern hybrid WG–SCs used for managing the charge/discharge operation of SCs at Unity Power Factor (UPF) mode are presented. For this purpose, the Port–Controlled Hamiltonian (PCH) methodology is deduced and explicitly presented. Simulation results, via MATLAB™, reveal that the proposed PCH control methodology can be successfully implemented to ensure acceptable system dynamic behavior. Numerical results are validated with experimental measurements to investigate the significance of the PCH approach for the energy management operation in eco-tractions.

(Emil);Localization of hotspots and critical aging segments of transmission lines is important for operation and asset management of power transmission systems. Conductors can lose their tensile strength due to the adverse effects of conductor aging caused by annealing. Although the loss of conductor strength is gradual, it accumulates over time and increases the probability of outages and blackouts. Therefore, it is important to keep track of conductor temperatures over time and in space, in order to identify segments of power transmission network that may require more close attention, repairs, or reinforcements. This paper describes and illustrates a new methodology for localization of hotspots and identification of critical aging segments of power transmission lines. The methodology uses load information and weather conditions derived from historical weather reanalysis to derive a time series of spatially resolved map of conductor temperatures. The temperature map is then used to estimate loss of conductor tensile strength for each span of the transmission line. The process is illustrated for a sample transmission line, using assumed load current and historical weather information spanning a period of five years. The simulation results show that the proposed approach provides information vital for transmission network operating procedures and transmission asset management.

The decomposition was accomplished by reducing the pressure on a hydrate slurry in water to a value below the three-phase equilibrium pressure at the reactor temperature. The data were obtained at temperatures from 274 to 283 K and pressures from 0.17 to 6.97 MPa. The stirring rates were high enough to eliminate mass-transfer effects. Analysis of the data indicated that the decomposition rate was proportional to the particle surface area and to the difference in the fugacity of methane at the equilibrium pressure and the decomposition pressure. The proportionality constant showed an Arrhenius temperature dependence. An estimate of the hydrate particle diameters in the experiments permitted the development of an intrinsic model for the kinetics of hydrate decomposition.

Hence, high energy density is a desirable property of the TES system. Phase change materials (PCM) helps to increase this characteristic. A high temperature pilot plant able to test different types of TES systems and materials was designed and built at the University of Lleida (Spain). This pilot plant is composed mainly of three parts: heating system, cooling system, and different storage tanks. Two identical storage tanks based on the shell-and-tubes heat exchanger, one of them including 196 squared fins in the bundle of the tubes and the other without, were experimentally tested. Hydroquinone was selected as the storage material, having a latent heat of 205 kJ/kg and a phase change temperature between 168 and 173 °C. The aim of this paper is to test experimentally, and compare the average effectiveness of the TES systems analyzed using PCM for solar cooling and refrigeration applications. It was found out that for the same tank configurations (shell-and-tubes) even changing drastically the dimensions of the tank or the number and the diameter of the tubes, the average effectiveness curve proposed in the literature fits well with the results showed here.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The introduction of new light-duty vehicle emission limits to comply under real driving conditions (RDE) is pushing the diesel engine manufacturers to identify and improve the technologies and strategies for further emission reduction. The latest technology advancements on the after-treatment systems have permitted to achieve very low emission conformity factors over the RDE, and therefore, the biggest challenge of the diesel engine development is maintaining its competitiveness in the trade-off “CO<sub>2</sub>-system cost” in comparison to other propulsion systems. In this regard, diesel engines can continue to play an important role, in the short-medium term, to enable cost-effective compliance of CO<sub>2</sub>-fleet emission targets, either in conventional or hybrid propulsion systems configuration. This is especially true for large-size cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">In this framework, a comprehensive approach covering the whole powertrain is of primary importance in order to simultaneously meet the performance, efficiency, noise and emission targets, and therefore, further development of the combustion system design and injection system represent important levers for additional improvements. For this purpose, a dedicated 0.5 dm<sup>3</sup> single-cylinder engine has been developed and equipped with, a state-of-the-art Euro 6 combustion system, and an advanced common rail fuel injection system (FIS) offering higher flexibility in terms of injection strategy and higher quantity accuracy. Three injector nozzles with different hydraulic flow rates (HF) have been selected and employed for the overall combustion process optimization.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">The optimization has been performed by means of an extensive DoE-based test campaign in which the engine and FIS operating parameters have been parametrized with the aim to carry out a proper combination in terms of HF and injection strategy. The results at partial load conditions evidence significant advantages in applying an advanced injection pattern, while the HF reduction can significantly improve the smoke emission and combustion noise without fuel consumption penalties. Therefore, a proper combination and optimization of the HF and injection strategy can provide low noise and engine-out smoke while maintaining the rated power performance targets.</div></div>

In this paper, a model-based analysis of a rotary regenerator is carried out with a major emphasis given to the development and implementation of mathematical models for the thermal analysis of the fluid and wheel matrix. The effect of heat conduction in the direction of the fluid flow is taken into account and the influence of variations in rotating speed of the wheel as well as other characteristics (ambient temperature, airflow and geometric size) on dynamic responses are analysed. The pyrolysis and the gasifier units are removable. In order to characterise the pyrolysis products before their gasification, experiments were carried out, for the first time onlywith the pyrolysis unit and this paper deals with the results obtained. The biomass used is Pinus pinaster. The parameters investigated are: temperature, residence time and biomass flow rate. It has been found that increasing temperature and residence time improve the cracking of tars, gas production and char quality (fixed carbon rate more than 90%, volatile matter rate less than 4%). The increase of biomass flow rate leads to a bad char quality. The efficiency of tar cracking, the quality and the heating value of the charcoal and the gases, indicate that: temperature between 650 °C and 750 °C, residence time of 30 min, biomass flow rate between 10 and 15 kg/h should be the most convenient experimental conditions to get better results from the experimental device and from the biomass pyrolysis process. The kinetic study of charcoal generation shows that the pyrolysis process, in experimental conditions, is a first-order reaction. The kinetic parameters calculated are comparable with those found by other researchers. (Resume d'auteur)

Abstract Wood pellets were pyrolyzed using a microwave oven and different microwave power, apparatus set-up and microwave absorbers (none, Fe, and carbon). Pyrolysis was realized in a short time in the presence of Fe or carbon while it was incomplete if the absorber was not present. Furthermore when the absorber was present the shape of the pellets remained unaltered while if the absorber was not employed pellets were disaggregated. Three fractions were collected from each pyrolysis: a gas, a liquid also called bio-oil and a solid called bio-char. The bio-oil contained two phases and they were quantitatively characterized through a GC/MS-FID procedure using an internal standard according to a previously reported method. HPLC/MS, FTIR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy were also employed for characterization of these liquids. Cellulose pyrolysis products were present in the upper phase such as water, acetic acid, furans (such as furfural), carbohydrates and their derivatives. Compounds from pyrolysis of lignin such as phenols and veratric acid were present in the bottom phase. The microwave assisted pyrolysis showed the possibility to efficiently convert wood pellets in different products. The main economical important components may be separated and used as chemicals, natural drugs or pesticides, while the remaining components, the solid and the gas may be used for energy production (solid and bio-oil). Solid may be also used for carbon sequestration.

Dual active bridge converters enable bidirectional power flow in buck and boost operating modes. This paper presents an advanced switching sequence and burst-mode strategy to balance conduction, switching, and magnetic losses under light, medium, and heavy loading conditions, leading to improved operating efficiency. The implementation of the switching sequence employs the natural state-plane trajectories of the converter and contributes to higher efficiency and the ability to perform burst mode. The proposed switching sequences improve the overall efficiency of the converter by enabling soft switching and adjusting the frequency to match the minimum RMS transformer current in the full operating range. Furthermore, it incorporates a fully controlled burst-mode switching sequence for light loading conditions to further extend the efficiency gains. As a result, maximum efficiency is obtained by taking advantage of all the possible switching structures of the converter. The analysis provides insight into the natural trajectories of the converter, which produce soft-switching transitions and enable the converter structures to achieve the target operating point directly. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the benefits of the switching sequence and illustrate the burst-mode operation.

This study investigates the influence of these process parameters on the electrical efficiency of the genset (ηglobal), the electrical engine efficiency (ηengine), the cold gas efficiency (CGE), and the syngas composition. Experimental tests were carried out by varying the moisture content from 11% to 23% and the electrical power from 4.7 kW to 12.8 kW on a commercial gasifier equipped with precise measuring tools. The increase of the performance when the electrical load is increased or when the moisture content in the wood chips is decreased is both quantified and discussed. Such behaviour was mainly explained by differences in engine filling rates and reactor temperatures.

Electrochemical capacitors, called supercapacitors (SCs) or ultracapacitors, are devices conveniently used for embedded electrical energy management owing to their huge capacitance, low internal resistance and flexible control through power electronic conversion. This paper proposes a main power supply of hybrid Wind Generator (WG)–SC within the train station for feeding the traction onboard SC through specified limited feeding transit durations. Onboard SCs provide the train with the requested start–up self–energy. The hybrid WG–SCs system is an environmental–friendly source that enables the independency on national grid and guarantees an efficient bidirectional power transfer for energy management with enhanced dynamic performance. Therefore, the dynamic modelling and the experimental analysis of the modern hybrid WG–SCs used for managing the charge/discharge operation of SCs at Unity Power Factor (UPF) mode are presented. For this purpose, the Port–Controlled Hamiltonian (PCH) methodology is deduced and explicitly presented. Simulation results, via MATLAB™, reveal that the proposed PCH control methodology can be successfully implemented to ensure acceptable system dynamic behavior. Numerical results are validated with experimental measurements to investigate the significance of the PCH approach for the energy management operation in eco-tractions.

(Emil);Localization of hotspots and critical aging segments of transmission lines is important for operation and asset management of power transmission systems. Conductors can lose their tensile strength due to the adverse effects of conductor aging caused by annealing. Although the loss of conductor strength is gradual, it accumulates over time and increases the probability of outages and blackouts. Therefore, it is important to keep track of conductor temperatures over time and in space, in order to identify segments of power transmission network that may require more close attention, repairs, or reinforcements. This paper describes and illustrates a new methodology for localization of hotspots and identification of critical aging segments of power transmission lines. The methodology uses load information and weather conditions derived from historical weather reanalysis to derive a time series of spatially resolved map of conductor temperatures. The temperature map is then used to estimate loss of conductor tensile strength for each span of the transmission line. The process is illustrated for a sample transmission line, using assumed load current and historical weather information spanning a period of five years. The simulation results show that the proposed approach provides information vital for transmission network operating procedures and transmission asset management.
