Extracellular enzymes from filamentous fungi are increasingly used in eco-friendly biotransformation processes. Their relevant technological role and their stability towards extreme process conditions make of them the first sustainable solution for the elaboration of bio-based products from biomass conversion. Objectives. This paper describes the isolation of filamentous fungi from decaying plant material in the region of Meknes (northern central Morocco) and the assessment of their ability to breakdown lignocellulose. The objective is to select performant fungi with enzymatic machinery adapted to local environment and with potential for the breakdown of the regional specific lignocellulosic by-products into potentially high-value molecules. Method. Cereals, decaying wood, olive-pomace and -pulp and their composts were used to isolate lignocellulolytic fungi. One hundred twenty-seven pure strains were isolated and screened at 25 °C on selective media with cellulose or lignin as the sole carbon source. Performant strains were validated for the production of ligno-cellulolytic enzymes and identified using molecular technique. Results. Twenty-eight fungi had mycelial diameter on cellulose ≥ 6 cm and cellulolytic index ≥ 0.9. Twenty-two strains had the same profile on lignin medium. The production of endoglucanase, lignin peroxidase and manganese peroxidase enzymes was confirmed in performant strains using qualitative assay and molecular identification revealed that the best performing fungi were Mucor circinelloides, Mucor racemosus, Penicillium brasilianum, Penicillium crustosum, Paecilomyces sp., Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, Aspergillus fischeri, Curvularia spicifera, Humicola grisea, Trichoderma atroviride and Cosmospora viridescens. Measurement of ligno-cellulolytic activities revealed that Penicillium and Fusarium strains mainly from wood decay and compost had the best profiles among performing strains. Conclusions. Isolated fungi are high decomposers of biomass and represent a prominent solution to develop green bioprocesses in the region.

The cells were developed by growing a stack of ten InAs/GaAs QDs layers between p and n doped GaAs conventional emitters. Electroluminescence, EL, photoreflectance, PR, and transmission electron microscopy, TEM, were applied to the samples in order to test and characterize them optically. The results, derived from the application of the different techniques, showed a good correlation. TEM images revealed a very good structural quality of the QDs, which seem to evolve in shape-strain from the bottom to the top of the stack. Corresponding to the quality observed by TEM, strong signals from EL and PR resolved unambiguously the energy band diagram of the QDIBSCs. By fitting PR data we were able to indentify the coexistence of bands and discrete energy levels coming from the IB material. The PR data evidenced also a strong electric field over the dots, attributed to the space charge region created between the p-n emitters sandwiching the IB material. The current paradigm of global economics with exponential and continuous economic growth is unsustainable as far as Earth system ecology is concerned. To support the Earth system and boost sustainable development, a functional and operational linkage between global ecology and economics should be established – which we term ‘carbonomics’. The simple basis of ‘carbonomics’ is that the more fossil and non-fossil carbon one has as stocks, and not flows, of carbon, the richer one is. It explicates that in developing countries efforts by housing authorities have been on housing provision irrespective of the environmental threats to sustainability. As these houses are built, future of urban ecology is under threat. The questions regarding this phenomenon are several: how do low-income populations perceive environmental issues of urban settlements? How capable and willing are the local authorities to embrace and apply ecological based planning in residential development? What are the facilitating instruments of ecological-based planning? What are the prospects of integrating ecological based planning to low-income residential development? What are the restraining factors towards embracement of ecological based planning and how best can they be harnessed towards future ecological cities? The case study of Hatcliffe residential area in Harare shows that there are many challenges to overcome uncoordinated planning approaches, ineffective policies and legislative frameworks, weak institutional settings, financial constraints, outdated planning standards and regulations, poverty, lack of environmental stewardship and lack of political will among others. The study findings call for robust environmental conservation strategies, strong environmental stewardship, responsive institutional and funding mechanism backed by realistic legislative frameworks and robust policy rectification. Structural monitoring applications such as corrosion assessment, measurement of concrete temperature or moisture content of critical bridge structures can greatly benefit from the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), however energy harvesting for the operation of the network remains a challenge in this setting. We present a multihop vibration-based energy harvesting WSN system for bridge monitoring applications. Our preliminary simulation experiments show that the system is able to maintain energy neutral operation over time, preserving energy with careful management of sleep and communication times.

To protect the intertidal salt marshes of the lagoon of Venice from the erosion due to natural and human causes which is diffusely and intensely impacting them, the European Commission has funded the demonstrative project LIFE VIMINE. LIFE VIMINE aims to protect the most interior, hard-to-access salt marshes in the northern lagoon of Venice through an integrated approach, whose core is the prevention of erosion through numerous, small but spatially-diffuse soil-bioengineering protections works, mainly placed through semi-manual labour and with low impact on the environment and the landscape. The effectiveness of protection works in the long term is ensured through routine, temporally-continuous and spatially-diffuse actions of monitoring and maintenance. This method contrasts the common approach to managing hydraulic risk and erosion in Italy which is based on large, one-off and irreversible protection actions. The sustainability of the LIFE VIMINE approach is ensured by the participatory involvement of stakeholders and the recognition that protecting salt marshes means defending the benefits they provide to society through their ecological functions, as well as protecting the jobs linked to the existence or conservation of this habitat. Rapid progress in algal biotechnology has triggered a growing interest in hydrogel-encapsulated microalgal cultivation, especially for the engineering of functional photosynthetic materials and biomass production. An overlooked characteristic of gel-encapsulated cultures is the emergence of cell aggregates, which are the result of the mechanical confinement of the cells. Such aggregates have a dramatic effect on the light management of gel-encapsulated photobioreactors and hence strongly affect the photosynthetic outcome. To evaluate such an effect, we experimentally studied the optical response of hydrogels containing algal aggregates and developed optical simulations to study the resultant light intensity profiles. The simulations are validated experimentally via transmittance measurements using an integrating sphere and aggregate volume analysis with confocal microscopy. Specifically, the heterogeneous distribution of cell aggregates in a hydrogel matrix can increase light penetration while alleviating photoinhibition more effectively than in a flat biofilm. Finally, we demonstrate that light harvesting efficiency can be further enhanced with the introduction of scattering particles within the hydrogel matrix, leading to a four-fold increase in biomass growth. Our study, therefore, highlights a new strategy for the design of spatially efficient photosynthetic living materials that have important implications for the engineering of future algal cultivation systems.

The process of new plantation establishment involves land use change, which in many cases is directly related with the loss of primary climax forest. Papua has good climate conditions for oil palm cultivation due to high precipitation and rich in nutrients soils, as well as a large amount of available land; but its remoteness and political situation involve higher risks and costs for investors. The palm oil industry generates employment opportunities, potential for development of rural areas, as well as revenue redistribution to society in the form of taxes. On the other hand, land use change can be responsible for the loss of ecosystem services, loss of natural habitats and carbon emissions. Papua-Indonesia holds very deep and ancient tribal traditions, and its population in general opposes change. This study presents the issues related to the establishment of new oil palm plantations in Papua, Indonesia. The local and global consequences are reviewed. Factors that influence the decision-making process are identified in a strengths-weakness-opportunities-threats analysis. In fact such communities are often associated with low fertility soils, especially regarding nitrogen levels. Very few studies have been carried out in southern Europe on the cultivation techniques of native herbaceous species and on how to create and maintain semi-natural herbaceous communities in relation to soil properties. This study is aimed at determining the ecological characteristics and the cultivation needs of 26 herbaceous species native to Italy and southern Europe in order to identify their landscape potential in low-maintenance conditions. Mono-specific plots were set up in three different soils. The criteria for choosing the species were based on their capacity to thrive in poor dry soils and to tolerate stress and disturbance. In addition the criteria were also based on their ornamental value, including the ability to attract insects. Annuals, biennials and perennials were included in the study. Seedling emergence and plant biomass were determined. The percentage of field establishment and biomass appeared to be affected by the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil. Species were classified as having low or medium-high seedling emergence in the field assessment. Calamintha nepeta, Campanula rapunculus, Dianthus carthusianorum, Verbascum blattaria, Nigella damascena, Salvia verbenaca, and Scabiosa columbaria developed low biomass. Thus they were more suitable for long lasting plantings in unfertile soils (e.g. land restoration). Daucus carota, Matricaria chamomilla, Papaver rhoeas, Verbascum sinuatum, Coleostophus myconis and Senecio erraticus produced high biomass especially in the most fertile soil. They are more likely to survive competition in highly productive soils.

In this system, cattails are grown on floating supports placed in eutrophic water bodies in order to form a biomass mat that contributes to water treatment; the produced biomass is fully harvested at the end of the growth cycle. In this work datasets of key parameters concerning GFF performance were built for the proof-of-concept of GFFs. Results highlighted the relationship between biomass production and water quality, with lower biomass production in the treatment with lowest COD. Biomass partitioning was slightly affected by the water quality, at the contamination levels studied; the submerged biomass represented 45.6% of the total biomass (dry mass) on average, partitioned into 79.5% rhizomes and 20.5% roots at the February harvest. The starch content of the submerged biomass varied with harvest date and biomass partitioning. Main conclusion was that the potential of GFF system for bioethanol and biobased products is high, but it clearly relies on the nutrient water level and the harvest date. Extracellular enzymes from filamentous fungi are increasingly used in eco-friendly biotransformation processes. Their relevant technological role and their stability towards extreme process conditions make of them the first sustainable solution for the elaboration of bio-based products from biomass conversion. Objectives. This paper describes the isolation of filamentous fungi from decaying plant material in the region of Meknes (northern central Morocco) and the assessment of their ability to breakdown lignocellulose. The objective is to select performant fungi with enzymatic machinery adapted to local environment and with potential for the breakdown of the regional specific lignocellulosic by-products into potentially high-value molecules. Method. Cereals, decaying wood, olive-pomace and -pulp and their composts were used to isolate lignocellulolytic fungi. One hundred twenty-seven pure strains were isolated and screened at 25 °C on selective media with cellulose or lignin as the sole carbon source. Performant strains were validated for the production of ligno-cellulolytic enzymes and identified using molecular technique. Results. Twenty-eight fungi had mycelial diameter on cellulose ≥ 6 cm and cellulolytic index ≥ 0.9. Twenty-two strains had the same profile on lignin medium. The production of endoglucanase, lignin peroxidase and manganese peroxidase enzymes was confirmed in performant strains using qualitative assay and molecular identification revealed that the best performing fungi were Mucor circinelloides, Mucor racemosus, Penicillium brasilianum, Penicillium crustosum, Paecilomyces sp., Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, Aspergillus fischeri, Curvularia spicifera, Humicola grisea, Trichoderma atroviride and Cosmospora viridescens. Measurement of ligno-cellulolytic activities revealed that Penicillium and Fusarium strains mainly from wood decay and compost had the best profiles among performing strains. Conclusions. Isolated fungi are high decomposers of biomass and represent a prominent solution to develop green bioprocesses in the region.

The cells were developed by growing a stack of ten InAs/GaAs QDs layers between p and n doped GaAs conventional emitters. Electroluminescence, EL, photoreflectance, PR, and transmission electron microscopy, TEM, were applied to the samples in order to test and characterize them optically. The results, derived from the application of the different techniques, showed a good correlation. TEM images revealed a very good structural quality of the QDs, which seem to evolve in shape-strain from the bottom to the top of the stack. Corresponding to the quality observed by TEM, strong signals from EL and PR resolved unambiguously the energy band diagram of the QDIBSCs. By fitting PR data we were able to indentify the coexistence of bands and discrete energy levels coming from the IB material. The PR data evidenced also a strong electric field over the dots, attributed to the space charge region created between the p-n emitters sandwiching the IB material. The current paradigm of global economics with exponential and continuous economic growth is unsustainable as far as Earth system ecology is concerned. It explicates that in developing countries efforts by housing authorities have been on housing provision irrespective of the environmental threats to sustainability. As these houses are built, future of urban ecology is under threat. The questions regarding this phenomenon are several: how do low-income populations perceive environmental issues of urban settlements? How capable and willing are the local authorities to embrace and apply ecological based planning in residential development? What are the facilitating instruments of ecological-based planning? What are the prospects of integrating ecological based planning to low-income residential development? What are the restraining factors towards embracement of ecological based planning and how best can they be harnessed towards future ecological cities? The case study of Hatcliffe residential area in Harare shows that there are many challenges to overcome uncoordinated planning approaches, ineffective policies and legislative frameworks, weak institutional settings, financial constraints, outdated planning standards and regulations, poverty, lack of environmental stewardship and lack of political will among others. The study findings call for robust environmental conservation strategies, strong environmental stewardship, responsive institutional and funding mechanism backed by realistic legislative frameworks and robust policy rectification. Structural monitoring applications such as corrosion assessment, measurement of concrete temperature or moisture content of critical bridge structures can greatly benefit from the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), however energy harvesting for the operation of the network remains a challenge in this setting. We present a multihop vibration-based energy harvesting WSN system for bridge monitoring applications. Our preliminary simulation experiments show that the system is able to maintain energy neutral operation over time, preserving energy with careful management of sleep and communication times.

To protect the intertidal salt marshes of the lagoon of Venice from the erosion due to natural and human causes which is diffusely and intensely impacting them, the European Commission has funded the demonstrative project LIFE VIMINE. LIFE VIMINE aims to protect the most interior, hard-to-access salt marshes in the northern lagoon of Venice through an integrated approach, whose core is the prevention of erosion through numerous, small but spatially-diffuse soil-bioengineering protections works, mainly placed through semi-manual labour and with low impact on the environment and the landscape. The effectiveness of protection works in the long term is ensured through routine, temporally-continuous and spatially-diffuse actions of monitoring and maintenance. This method contrasts the common approach to managing hydraulic risk and erosion in Italy which is based on large, one-off and irreversible protection actions. The sustainability of the LIFE VIMINE approach is ensured by the participatory involvement of stakeholders and the recognition that protecting salt marshes means defending the benefits they provide to society through their ecological functions, as well as protecting the jobs linked to the existence or conservation of this habitat. Rapid progress in algal biotechnology has triggered a growing interest in hydrogel-encapsulated microalgal cultivation, especially for the engineering of functional photosynthetic materials and biomass production. An overlooked characteristic of gel-encapsulated cultures is the emergence of cell aggregates, which are the result of the mechanical confinement of the cells. Such aggregates have a dramatic effect on the light management of gel-encapsulated photobioreactors and hence strongly affect the photosynthetic outcome. To evaluate such an effect, we experimentally studied the optical response of hydrogels containing algal aggregates and developed optical simulations to study the resultant light intensity profiles. The simulations are validated experimentally via transmittance measurements using an integrating sphere and aggregate volume analysis with confocal microscopy. Specifically, the heterogeneous distribution of cell aggregates in a hydrogel matrix can increase light penetration while alleviating photoinhibition more effectively than in a flat biofilm. Finally, we demonstrate that light harvesting efficiency can be further enhanced with the introduction of scattering particles within the hydrogel matrix, leading to a four-fold increase in biomass growth. Our study, therefore, highlights a new strategy for the design of spatially efficient photosynthetic living materials that have important implications for the engineering of future algal cultivation systems.

The process of new plantation establishment involves land use change, which in many cases is directly related with the loss of primary climax forest. Papua has good climate conditions for oil palm cultivation due to high precipitation and rich in nutrients soils, as well as a large amount of available land; but its remoteness and political situation involve higher risks and costs for investors. The palm oil industry generates employment opportunities, potential for development of rural areas, as well as revenue redistribution to society in the form of taxes. On the other hand, land use change can be responsible for the loss of ecosystem services, loss of natural habitats and carbon emissions. Papua-Indonesia holds very deep and ancient tribal traditions, and its population in general opposes change. This study presents the issues related to the establishment of new oil palm plantations in Papua, Indonesia. The local and global consequences are reviewed. Factors that influence the decision-making process are identified in a strengths-weakness-opportunities-threats analysis. Malorgio;Soils characterized by low fertility, the absence of structure, low organic matter content, and a high content of alien materials can be valuable for the creation of species-rich vegetation communities. In fact such communities are often associated with low fertility soils, especially regarding nitrogen levels. Very few studies have been carried out in southern Europe on the cultivation techniques of native herbaceous species and on how to create and maintain semi-natural herbaceous communities in relation to soil properties. This study is aimed at determining the ecological characteristics and the cultivation needs of 26 herbaceous species native to Italy and southern Europe in order to identify their landscape potential in low-maintenance conditions. Mono-specific plots were set up in three different soils. The criteria for choosing the species were based on their capacity to thrive in poor dry soils and to tolerate stress and disturbance. In addition the criteria were also based on their ornamental value, including the ability to attract insects. Annuals, biennials and perennials were included in the study. Seedling emergence and plant biomass were determined. The percentage of field establishment and biomass appeared to be affected by the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil. Species were classified as having low or medium-high seedling emergence in the field assessment. Calamintha nepeta, Campanula rapunculus, Dianthus carthusianorum, Verbascum blattaria, Nigella damascena, Salvia verbenaca, and Scabiosa columbaria developed low biomass. Thus they were more suitable for long lasting plantings in unfertile soils (e.g. land restoration). Daucus carota, Matricaria chamomilla, Papaver rhoeas, Verbascum sinuatum, Coleostophus myconis and Senecio erraticus produced high biomass especially in the most fertile soil. They are more likely to survive competition in highly productive soils.

In this system, cattails are grown on floating supports placed in eutrophic water bodies in order to form a biomass mat that contributes to water treatment; the produced biomass is fully harvested at the end of the growth cycle. In this work datasets of key parameters concerning GFF performance were built for the proof-of-concept of GFFs. Results highlighted the relationship between biomass production and water quality, with lower biomass production in the treatment with lowest COD. Biomass partitioning was slightly affected by the water quality, at the contamination levels studied; the submerged biomass represented 45.6% of the total biomass (dry mass) on average, partitioned into 79.5% rhizomes and 20.5% roots at the February harvest. The starch content of the submerged biomass varied with harvest date and biomass partitioning. Main conclusion was that the potential of GFF system for bioethanol and biobased products is high, but it clearly relies on the nutrient water level and the harvest date.
