description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2015Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Steffen Miiller; Valerie Bensch; Daliang Shen;This paper introduces a model predictive control (MPC) strategy for the purpose of fuel-optimal operation of a range-extender hybrid vehicle. The modern navigation system nowadays can provide abundant road information. Using this information, the proposed controller solves a global optimization problem offline in order to determine a preset trajectory of the state of charge (SoC). The online MPC uses the resulting SoC trajectory as set-points for the terminal state in every moving horizon. Repeating this process, the optimal energy management along the trip to be traveled can thus be calculated. This proposed control strategy is implemented in the commercial vehicle simulation environment IPG CarMaker. From the first simulation results, the proposed strategy shows a promising fuel saving potential with real-time capability.

Babik;AbstractIn this paper a complete vehicle system simulation tool chain which applies a Multi Objective Optimization (MOO) methodology for designing the Electric Powertrain (ePT) of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) is presented. Optimization scope includes all relevant electric powertrain components from battery, inverter, electric machine to gear box. In addition to cost, vehicle dynamics, energy consumption and range are further optimization targets. For an overall minimal system cost design a multiplicity of interactions between all powertrain components has to be taken into account. High system complexity prevents an expert to consider all relevant correlations without the support of numeric simulation tools. The presented simulation tool chain enables fast identification of the best cost/benefit trade off regarding system cost while considering all defined system performance requirements. The approach enables experts to find unconventional solutions which would have been overlooked applying a classical straight forward approach and, thus, helps to sharpen the expert's knowledge in cause-effect relationships on the system level. Typical use cases are given and illustrated by several practical examples.

Most of these are thyristor based SMES, employing proportional type controllers. In this paper, a supervisory adaptive model predictive control scheme (AMPC) is proposed for a voltage source converter based relatively small rating SMES for LFC application. The reference power command for the SMES is derived from the AMPC in such a manner that it effectively handles the operational constraints of the SMES system. A representative first-order system emulating the inner loop dynamics of the SMES chopper system, is tuned offline via genetic algorithm (GA) and is used to derive dynamic constraints for the cost function in AMPC. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated through simulations.

It can be seen that for a large grounding grid, when the soil resistivity is small, the influence of both resistivity and permeability of grounding material on the performance of grounding grids is great. If the frequency is not very high, the grounding material's resistivity can affect the performance of the grounding grid obviously. If the frequency is very low or very high, the effect of the grounding material's permeability on the performance of the grounding grid is small, while the effect is obvious at other frequency.

Aware;The distribution feeders often gets overload under peak power demands. This situation is generally countered by load shading, which leads to financial losses to utilities and individual users. This paper presents the new methodology to support the real and reactive power demand through energy storage (ES) to avoid the load shading situation. The compensation of real / reactive power not only provides the voltage profile improvement but also ensures the sustain power to the consumers. A control scheme incorporated also maintains the unity power factor on source side. This relieves the existing distribution network from the extra reactive loading hence the line is having extra capacity for real power transfer to its maximum thermal limit. This additional capacity availability adds more customer base to justify the energy storage investment. The operational features are presented through a simulation of a realistic urban feeder data. The financial analysis is also presented to justify the energy storages with the distribution networks.

The current status and challenges associated with the production and utilization of cellulosic ethanol in Korea are reviewed in this paper. Cellulosic ethanol has emerged as a promising option for mitigating Korea's CO(2) emissions and enhancing its energy security. Korea's limited biomass resources is the most critical barrier to achieving its implementation targets for cellulosic ethanol. Efforts to identify new suitable biomass resources for cellulosic ethanol production are ongoing and intensive. Aquatic biomasses including macroalgae and plantation wastes collected in the Southeast Asia region have been found to have great potential as feedstocks for the production of cellulosic ethanol. R&D explorations into the development of technologies that can convert biomass materials to ethanol more efficiently also are underway. It is expected that cellulosic ethanol will be in supply from 2020 and that, by 2030, its use will have effectively reduced Korea's total gasoline consumption by 10%.

The passivation of iron and steel (DIN 1623) was studied by integral and depth selective conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. Thickness and phase composition of the passive layer formed in sulphate solution and in a phosphate buffer were determined in dependence on the anodic potential and the duration of the passivating procedure. The experimental results lead to the conclusion that not the whole oxidic layer is responsible for the passivity but only a very thin intermediate layer formed between the cubic substrate and the rhombic oxide (γ-FeOOH) cover.

Sathya;Abstract This paper highlights the load frequency control using dual mode Bat algorithm based scheduling of PI controllers for interconnected power systems. The bat inspired algorithm based on the echolocation of bats has been developed in 2010. In this study, the bat inspired algorithm based dual mode PI controller is applied to the multi-area interconnected thermal power system in order to tune the parameter PI controllers. The proposed controller is simple in structure and easy for implementation. The proposed controller was compared with those from conventional the PI controllers and Fuzzy gain scheduling of PI controllers. The simulation results show the point that the proposed bat inspired algorithm, based dual mode gain scheduling of PI controllers (BIDPI), provides better transient as well as steady state of response. It is also found that the proposed controller is less sensitive to the changes in system parameters.

AbstractWe devise a methodology to predict failures in wind turbine drive‐train components and quantify its utility. The methodology consists of two main steps. The first step is the set up of a predictive model for shutdown events, which is able to raise an alarm in advance of the fault‐induced shutdown. The model is trained on data for shutdown events retrieved from the alarm log of an offshore wind farm. Here, it is assumed that the timely prediction of low‐severity events, typically caused by abnormal component operation, allows for an intervention that can prevent premature component failures. The prediction models are based on statistical classification using only supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) data. In the second step, the shutdown prediction model is combined with a cost model to provide an estimate of the benefits associated with implementing the predictive maintenance system. This is achieved by computing the maximum net utility attainable as a function of the model performance and efficiency of intervention carried out by the user. Results show that the system can be expected to be cost‐effective under specific conditions. A discussion about potential improvements of the approach is provided, along with suggestions for further research in this area.

In this study, feasibility of selected nutrient sequestration during hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) was tested for three different HTC temperatures (180, 230, and 300 °C). To study the nutrient sequestration in solid from liquid solution, sugar and salt solutions were chosen as HTC feedstock. Glucose was used as carbohydrate source and various salts e.g., ammonium hydrophosphate, potassium chloride, potassium sulfate, and anhydrous ferric chloride were used as source of nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium, and iron, respectively. Solid hydrochar was extensively characterized by means of elemental, ICP-OES, SEM-EDX, surface area, pore volume and size, and ATR-FTIR to determine nutrients’ sequestration as well as hydrochar quality variation with HTC temperatures. The spherical mesoporous hydrochars produced during HTC have low surface area in the range of 1.0–3.5 m2 g?1. Hydrochar yield was increased about 10% with the increase of temperature from 180 °C to 300 °C. Nutrient sequestration was also increased with HTC temperature. In fact, around 71, 31, and 23 wt% nitrogen, iron, and phosphorus were sequestered at 300 °C, respectively. Potassium sequestration was very low throughout the HTC and maximum 5.2% was observed in solid during HTC.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2015Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Steffen Miiller; Valerie Bensch; Daliang Shen;This paper introduces a model predictive control (MPC) strategy for the purpose of fuel-optimal operation of a range-extender hybrid vehicle. The modern navigation system nowadays can provide abundant road information. Using this information, the proposed controller solves a global optimization problem offline in order to determine a preset trajectory of the state of charge (SoC). The online MPC uses the resulting SoC trajectory as set-points for the terminal state in every moving horizon. Repeating this process, the optimal energy management along the trip to be traveled can thus be calculated. This proposed control strategy is implemented in the commercial vehicle simulation environment IPG CarMaker. From the first simulation results, the proposed strategy shows a promising fuel saving potential with real-time capability.

Babik;AbstractIn this paper a complete vehicle system simulation tool chain which applies a Multi Objective Optimization (MOO) methodology for designing the Electric Powertrain (ePT) of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) is presented. Optimization scope includes all relevant electric powertrain components from battery, inverter, electric machine to gear box. In addition to cost, vehicle dynamics, energy consumption and range are further optimization targets. For an overall minimal system cost design a multiplicity of interactions between all powertrain components has to be taken into account. High system complexity prevents an expert to consider all relevant correlations without the support of numeric simulation tools. The presented simulation tool chain enables fast identification of the best cost/benefit trade off regarding system cost while considering all defined system performance requirements. The approach enables experts to find unconventional solutions which would have been overlooked applying a classical straight forward approach and, thus, helps to sharpen the expert's knowledge in cause-effect relationships on the system level. Typical use cases are given and illustrated by several practical examples.

Most of these are thyristor based SMES, employing proportional type controllers. In this paper, a supervisory adaptive model predictive control scheme (AMPC) is proposed for a voltage source converter based relatively small rating SMES for LFC application. The reference power command for the SMES is derived from the AMPC in such a manner that it effectively handles the operational constraints of the SMES system. A representative first-order system emulating the inner loop dynamics of the SMES chopper system, is tuned offline via genetic algorithm (GA) and is used to derive dynamic constraints for the cost function in AMPC. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated through simulations.

It can be seen that for a large grounding grid, when the soil resistivity is small, the influence of both resistivity and permeability of grounding material on the performance of grounding grids is great. If the frequency is not very high, the grounding material's resistivity can affect the performance of the grounding grid obviously. If the frequency is very low or very high, the effect of the grounding material's permeability on the performance of the grounding grid is small, while the effect is obvious at other frequency.

Aware;The distribution feeders often gets overload under peak power demands. This situation is generally countered by load shading, which leads to financial losses to utilities and individual users. This paper presents the new methodology to support the real and reactive power demand through energy storage (ES) to avoid the load shading situation. The compensation of real / reactive power not only provides the voltage profile improvement but also ensures the sustain power to the consumers. A control scheme incorporated also maintains the unity power factor on source side. This relieves the existing distribution network from the extra reactive loading hence the line is having extra capacity for real power transfer to its maximum thermal limit. This additional capacity availability adds more customer base to justify the energy storage investment. The operational features are presented through a simulation of a realistic urban feeder data. The financial analysis is also presented to justify the energy storages with the distribution networks.

The current status and challenges associated with the production and utilization of cellulosic ethanol in Korea are reviewed in this paper. Cellulosic ethanol has emerged as a promising option for mitigating Korea's CO(2) emissions and enhancing its energy security. Korea's limited biomass resources is the most critical barrier to achieving its implementation targets for cellulosic ethanol. Efforts to identify new suitable biomass resources for cellulosic ethanol production are ongoing and intensive. Aquatic biomasses including macroalgae and plantation wastes collected in the Southeast Asia region have been found to have great potential as feedstocks for the production of cellulosic ethanol. R&D explorations into the development of technologies that can convert biomass materials to ethanol more efficiently also are underway. It is expected that cellulosic ethanol will be in supply from 2020 and that, by 2030, its use will have effectively reduced Korea's total gasoline consumption by 10%.

The passivation of iron and steel (DIN 1623) was studied by integral and depth selective conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. Thickness and phase composition of the passive layer formed in sulphate solution and in a phosphate buffer were determined in dependence on the anodic potential and the duration of the passivating procedure. The experimental results lead to the conclusion that not the whole oxidic layer is responsible for the passivity but only a very thin intermediate layer formed between the cubic substrate and the rhombic oxide (γ-FeOOH) cover.

Sathya;Abstract This paper highlights the load frequency control using dual mode Bat algorithm based scheduling of PI controllers for interconnected power systems. The bat inspired algorithm based on the echolocation of bats has been developed in 2010. In this study, the bat inspired algorithm based dual mode PI controller is applied to the multi-area interconnected thermal power system in order to tune the parameter PI controllers. The proposed controller is simple in structure and easy for implementation. The proposed controller was compared with those from conventional the PI controllers and Fuzzy gain scheduling of PI controllers. The simulation results show the point that the proposed bat inspired algorithm, based dual mode gain scheduling of PI controllers (BIDPI), provides better transient as well as steady state of response. It is also found that the proposed controller is less sensitive to the changes in system parameters.

AbstractWe devise a methodology to predict failures in wind turbine drive‐train components and quantify its utility. The methodology consists of two main steps. The first step is the set up of a predictive model for shutdown events, which is able to raise an alarm in advance of the fault‐induced shutdown. The model is trained on data for shutdown events retrieved from the alarm log of an offshore wind farm. Here, it is assumed that the timely prediction of low‐severity events, typically caused by abnormal component operation, allows for an intervention that can prevent premature component failures. The prediction models are based on statistical classification using only supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) data. In the second step, the shutdown prediction model is combined with a cost model to provide an estimate of the benefits associated with implementing the predictive maintenance system. This is achieved by computing the maximum net utility attainable as a function of the model performance and efficiency of intervention carried out by the user. Results show that the system can be expected to be cost‐effective under specific conditions. A discussion about potential improvements of the approach is provided, along with suggestions for further research in this area.

In this study, feasibility of selected nutrient sequestration during hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) was tested for three different HTC temperatures (180, 230, and 300 °C). To study the nutrient sequestration in solid from liquid solution, sugar and salt solutions were chosen as HTC feedstock. Glucose was used as carbohydrate source and various salts e.g., ammonium hydrophosphate, potassium chloride, potassium sulfate, and anhydrous ferric chloride were used as source of nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium, and iron, respectively. Solid hydrochar was extensively characterized by means of elemental, ICP-OES, SEM-EDX, surface area, pore volume and size, and ATR-FTIR to determine nutrients’ sequestration as well as hydrochar quality variation with HTC temperatures. The spherical mesoporous hydrochars produced during HTC have low surface area in the range of 1.0–3.5 m2 g?1. Hydrochar yield was increased about 10% with the increase of temperature from 180 °C to 300 °C. Nutrient sequestration was also increased with HTC temperature. In fact, around 71, 31, and 23 wt% nitrogen, iron, and phosphorus were sequestered at 300 °C, respectively.
