The development of advanced computational models for improving the accuracy of streamflow forecasting could save time and cost for sustainable water resource management. In this study, a locally weighted learning (LWL) algorithm is combined with the Additive Regression (AR), Bagging (BG), Dagging (DG), Random Subspace (RS), and Rotation Forest (RF) ensemble techniques for the streamflow forecasting in the Jhelum Catchment, Pakistan. To build the models, we grouped the initial parameters into four different scenarios (M1–M4) of input data with a five-fold cross-validation (I–V) approach. To evaluate the accuracy of the developed ensemble models, previous lagged values of streamflow were used as inputs whereas the cross-validation technique and periodicity input were used to examine prediction accuracy on the basis of root correlation coefficient (R), root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), relative absolute error (RAE), and root relative squared error (RRSE). The results showed that the incorporation of periodicity (i.e., MN) as an additional input variable considerably improved both the training performance and predictive performance of the models. A comparison between the results obtained from the input combinations III and IV revealed a significant performance improvement. The cross-validation revealed that the dataset M3 provided more accurate results compared to the other datasets. While all the ensemble models successfully outperformed the standalone LWL model, the ensemble LWL-AR model was identified as the best model. Our study demonstrated that the ensemble modeling approach is a robust and promising alternative to the single forecasting of streamflow that should be further investigated with different datasets from other regions around the world.

The thermo-economic model uses accurate properties for the seawater, brine, pure water and vapour and is solved with an equation solver which does not require the development of a specific solution algorithm as in most previous studies. This flexible model is used to analyze the influence of the number of effects N and the temperature difference ΔT e between effects on the technical and economic performance of multi-effect desalination systems with ejector vapour compression. In particular, it is shown that the performance calculated by an earlier black-box approach is not attainable by technically and economically realistic systems. It is also shown that for each feed configuration and a given number of effects there exists an optimum value of ΔT e which minimizes the cost of the produced potable water. This last result forms the basis of a procedure that combines black-box results with the optimum value of ΔT e and can be used to select the appropriate system for any specific application.

This study reports the fabrication of a new cathode electrode assembly using polyaniline (PANI) and graphene on a stainless steel mesh (SSM) as an alternative for the conventional expensive cathode of microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). With respect to the previous efforts to propose an efficient and cost-effective alternative for platinum (Pt) catalysts and cathode electrodes, the present study investigates the assessment of different catalysts to elucidate the potential of the modified SSM cathode electrode for larger-scale MECs. In the case of feeding dairy wastewater to the MEC, the maximum hydrogen production rate and COD removal were obtained by SSM/PANI/graphene cathode and had the values 0.805 m3 H2 m-3 anolyte day-1 and 82%, respectively, at the applied potential of 1 V. These values were only 20% and 7% lower than those of the MEC with Pt on the carbon cloth cathode, respectively. The coulombic efficiencies of SSM/Pt and SSM/PANI/graphene were seen to be 64.48% and 56.67%, respectively. It was also concluded that the fabrication cost of the modified cathode was 50% lower than the conventional cathodes with Pt on the carbon cloth. Finally, the evaluation of the modified cathode performance was achieved based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, linear sweep voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy.

The objective of this work was to study the kinetics of lipid production at lab scale fermenters by a new isolate of Yarrowia lipolytica SKY7. The model terms glycerol concentration inoculum and C/N ratio with inoculum were found to be significant for lipid production. Lipid production was found to be higher in glycerol 82.5g/L, C/N ratio 75 and inoculum volume 6.25%. Optimized culture conditions were tested at 15L bench scale reactor. The biomass concentration and lipid content obtained was 29.5g/L and 50% (w/w), respectively. The yield coefficients were calculated and found to be 0.332g/g (g biomass/g of glycerol) of biomass and 0.179g/g (g lipid/g glycerol consumed) for lipid. Observed rates of lipid production show lipid production from 30h of fermentation. Out of the total glycerol consumed, 41.1% glycerol was converted into biomass, lipid, and citric acid.

In this study, an agroforestry ecosystem project (AEP) is developed for confronting the conflict between agricultural development and forest protection. A fuzzy stochastic programming with Laplace scenario analysis (FSL) is proposed for planning water resources in an AEP issue under uncertainties. FSL can not only deal with spatial and temporal variations of hydrologic elements and meteorological conditions; but also handle uncertainties that are expressed in terms of probability, possibility distributions and fuzzy sets; meanwhile, policy scenario analysis with Laplace’s criterion (PSL) is introduced to handle probability of each scenario occurrence under the supposition of no data available. The developed FSL can be applied to an AEP issue in Xixian county, located in north of China. The result of ecological effects, water allocation patterns, pollution mitigation schemes and system benefits under various scenarios are obtained, which can support policymakers adjusting current strategy to improve regional ecological function with cost-effective and sustainable manners. Meanwhile, it can support generating a robust water plan for regional sustainability in an AEP issue under uncertainties.

S. Peter Henzi in OpenAIREAs the effects of global climate change become more apparent, animal species will become increasingly affected by extreme climate and its effect on the environment. There is a pressing need to understand animal physiological and behavioural responses to climatic stressors. We used the reactive scope model as a framework to investigate the influence of drought conditions on vervet monkey ( Chlorocebus pygerythrus ) behaviour, physiological stress and survival across 2.5 years in South Africa. Data were collected on climatic, environmental and behavioural variables and physiological stress via faecal glucocorticoid metabolites (fGCMs). There was a meaningful interaction between water availability and resource abundance: when food availability was high but standing water was unavailable, fGCM concentrations were higher compared to when food was abundant and water was available. Vervet monkeys adapted their behaviour during a drought period by spending a greater proportion of time resting at the expense of feeding, moving and social behaviour. As food availability decreased, vervet mortality increased. Peak mortality occurred when food availability was at its lowest and there was no standing water. A survival analysis revealed that higher fGCM concentrations were associated with an increased probability of mortality. Our results suggest that with continued climate change, the increasing prevalence of drought will negatively affect vervet abundance and distribution in our population. Our study contributes to knowledge of the limits and scope of behavioural and physiological plasticity among vervet monkeys in the face of rapid environmental change.

Hamdi Muratçobanoğlu in OpenAIREBiogas is one of the most attractive renewable resources due to its ability to convert waste into energy. Biogas is produced during an anaerobic digestion process from different organic waste resources with a combination of mainly CH4 (~50 mol/mol), CO2 (~15 mol/mol), and some trace gasses. The percentage of these trace gases is related to operating conditions and feedstocks. Due to the impurities of the trace gases, raw biogas has to be cleaned before use for many applications. Therefore, the cleaning, upgrading, and utilization of biogas has become an important topic that has been widely studied in recent years. In this review, raw biogas components are investigated in relation to feedstock resources. Then, using recent developments, it describes the cleaning methods that have been used to eliminate unwanted components in biogas. Additionally, the upgrading processes are systematically reviewed according to their technology, recovery range, and state of the art methods in this area, regarding obtaining biomethane from biogas. Furthermore, these upgrading methods have been comprehensively reviewed and compared with each other in terms of electricity consumption and methane losses. This comparison revealed that amine scrubbing is one the most promising methods in terms of methane losses and the energy demand of the system. In the section on biogas utilization, raw biogas and biomethane have been assessed with recently available data from the literature according to their usage areas and methods. It seems that biogas can be used as a biofuel to produce energy via CHP and fuel cells with high efficiency. Moreover, it is able to be utilized in an internal combustion engine which reduces exhaust emissions by using biofuels. Lastly, chemical production such as biomethanol, bioethanol, and higher alcohols are in the development stage for utilization of biogas and are discussed in depth. This review reveals that most biogas utilization approaches are in their early stages. The gaps that require further investigations in the field have been identified and highlighted for future research.

The latter was obtained following the soxhet extraction of sludge collected during a cleaning process (water scrubbing) on primary syngas. The tar was evaporated along with water in an evaporator maintained at 650 °C and entrained by a nitrogen flow. Tar in the gas phase was sent to a reformer where cracking + reforming tests were carried-out at 900 °C and 1 bar using char and char-derived ash pellets as catalysts. These catalysts were characterized using TGA, AE, XRD, SEM, EDX, XRF, ICP-MS, BET and Matersizer. Char-derived ash and char both hold similar metals and mineral structures. Following a 2 h conditioning at 900 °C, the fixed carbon in the char exhibited a larger surface area and pore volume while the char-derived ash revealed larger particle from the merging of vicinal minerals. No metal evaporation was observed after 24 h at 900 °C. During cracking and reforming, the initial 2–6 rings tar mixture extracted from the gasification residues sludge, loaded in the stream of nitrogen + steam at 65 g/Nm3, was reduced to 173.3 and 90.2 mg/Nm3, when using char-derived ash and char respectively. Pure syngas (CO + H2) was produced as the only permanent gases while carbon deposition was noticed in the solid beds. Even though the extent and type of tar were essentially similar when char and char-derived ash were used, the kinetics to reach steady state were slower for the char-derived ash. Steam content did not seem to impact on the tar conversion. However WG and WGS reactions most probably occurred, which might contribute to modulate the H2/CO molar ratio in the produced gas according to its targeted downstream utilization.

Saheed Oke in OpenAIREWater shortage in terms of both physical and economic water scarcity is still a major issue globally. The looming climate change threat has increased the adverse threats to water security in different regions. However, policy solutions to water security vary in different geographical regions and at different scales (local, regional, national, etc.). Understanding the successes and challenges of different policy solutions is critical to scaling-up successful policies and addressing water security holistically. This paper aims to explore the effects of implementing policies at different scales in three different case study contexts: 1. two Counties in California in the USA, 2. the City of Cape Town in South Africa and 3. the Country of Bangladesh. These case studies highlight various implemented policies and their effectiveness in each context. We reviewed relevant research papers consisting of peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings and gray literature using a content analysis approach based on keywords such as water scarcity, water shortage, climate change, policies, interventions and solutions. Based on this cross-case analysis, we present key strategies moving forward, including: reallocation of water based on different community and sector needs, the importance of stakeholders engagement and public awareness, and a need to implement both short and long-term management plans. There is no one-size fits all policy solution to water scarcity. Understanding the context, scale, and cultural environment will be a key to future water security-focused interventions and policies.

Maini in OpenAIREExpanding solvent steam assisted gravity drainage (ES-SAGD) is a hybrid steam–solvent oil recovery process that can be used to extract oil from heavy oil and bitumen reservoirs. It is a variation of the SAGD process in which only steam is used. In ES-SAGD, the mobilization of highly viscous oil is enhanced through a combination of heat and mass transfer processes, which results in significantly reduced volumes of water and natural gas needed to generate the injected steam, making ES-SAGD more energy efficient and environmentally sustainable relative to SAGD. Both SAGD and ES-SAGD use the same well configuration, and solvent co-injection in existing SAGD projects often requires limited facility modifications.
