Research data keyboard_double_arrow_right Dataset 2022Publisher:Zenodo Chunlüe Zhou; Cesar Azorin-Molina; Erik Engström; Lorenzo Minola; Lennart Wern; Sverker Hellström; Jessika Lönn; Deliang Chen;Creating a century-long homogenized near-surface wind speed (WS) observation dataset is essential to improve our knowledge about the uncertainty and causes of WS stilling and recovery. We rescued paper-based WS records dating back to the 1920s at 13 stations in Sweden and established a four-step homogenization procedure to generate the first 10-member centennial homogenized WS dataset (HomogWS-se) for community uses among climatology, ecology, hydrology and energy industry. HomogWS-se can be used to study the WS variability and change, assess climate reanalysis, and constrain climate simulations for better future projection of changes in the WS and wind energy potential. HomogWS-se contains 13 individual text files with 10-member century-long homogenized monthly WS series, as well as the member-mean series. {"references": ["Zhou, C., C. Azorin-Molina, E. Assessment of fishing grounds Restoration after a Change of bottom trawling Otter boards (ARCO). The main objective of the ARCO project is to study the current sedimentary processes related with trawling activity in the Palamós submarine canyon after the change of trawl doors by the Palamós harbor fleet. The impacts of this type of fishing in deep-sea environments are considered very high due to their intensity and recurrence, and to the fact that sediment dynamics are less energetic and the benthonic ecosystems are more vulnerable and have less resilience than in neritic or shelf environments Oceanographic data acquired during the ARCO Cruise (29GD20230626) on board the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2023.

1. Ornamental coloration is frequently an honest signal of quality associated with sexual selection. While changes in average environmental conditions affect carotenoid- and melanin-based coloration, no evidence exists that changes in intrinsic environmental predictability affect coloration. 2. Here we experimentally manipulated the intrinsic predictability of precipitation in semi-natural populations of common lizards Zootoca vivipara and tested its effect on ornamental coloration and reproduction of adult males. 3. Less predictable precipitation decreased hue of carotenoid-based coloration and the extent of melanin-based coloration. Hue was positively correlated and the extent of melanin-based coloration was negatively correlated with the male’s number of confirmed mate partners. 4. Treatment effects on hue were associated with reduced, and treatment effects on the extent of melanin-based coloration with increased access to females, in line with differential effects on sexual selection. 5. Neither survival nor reproductive success of adult males significantly differed among predictability treatments, suggesting that negative effects on reproduction caused by changes in carotenoid-based coloration may have been compensated by changes in melanin-based coloration. 6. The results also showed that ornamentation, rather than reproduction and survival of adult males, was affected by less favorable conditions. Together with previous results, this suggests that coloration might be more sensitive to changes in environmental conditions than direct fitness proxies. Global warming and direct anthropogenic impacts, such as water extraction, are largely affecting water budgets in Mediterranean wetlands, thereby increasing wetland salinities and isolation, and decreasing water depths and hydroperiods (duration of the inundation period). These wetland features are key elements structuring waterbird communities. However, the ultimate and net consequences of these dynamic conditions on waterbird assemblages are largely unknown. We combined a regular sampling on waterbird presence through the 2008 annual cycle with in-situ data on these relevant environmental predictors of waterbird distribution to model habitat selection for 69 individual species in a typical Mediterranean wetland network in south-western Spain. Species association with environmental features were subsequently used to predict changes in habitat suitability for each species under three climate change scenarios (encompassing changes in environment that ranged from 10% to 50% change as predicted by climatic models). Waterbirds distributed themselves unevenly throughout environmental gradients and water salinity was the most important gradient structuring the distribution of the community. Environmental suitability for the guilds of diving birds and vegetation gleaners will be reduced according to future climate scenarios, while most small wading birds will benefit from changing conditions. Resident species and those that breed in this wetland network will be also more impacted than those using this area for wintering or stopover. We provide here a tool that can be used in a horizon-scanning framework to identify emerging issues on waterbird conservation and to anticipate suitable management actions : Datasets as supporting information to article “How will climate change affect endangered Mediterranean waterbirds?” to be published in PLOS ONE. Abstract. An improved understanding of present-day climate variability and change relies on high-quality data sets from the past 2 millennia. Global efforts to model regional climate modes are in the process of being validated against, and integrated with, records of past vegetation change. For South America, however, the full potential of vegetation records for evaluating and improving climate models has hitherto not been sufficiently acknowledged due to an absence of information on the spatial and temporal coverage of study sites. This paper therefore serves as a guide to high-quality pollen records that capture environmental variability during the last 2 millennia. We identify 60 vegetation (pollen) records from across South America which satisfy geochronological requirements set out for climate modelling, and we discuss their sensitivity to the spatial signature of climate modes throughout the continent. Diverse patterns of vegetation response to climate change are observed, with more similar patterns of change in the lowlands and varying intensity and direction of responses in the highlands. Pollen records display local-scale responses to climate modes; thus, it is necessary to understand how vegetation–climate interactions might diverge under variable settings. We provide a qualitative translation from pollen metrics to climate variables. Additionally, pollen is an excellent indicator of human impact through time. We discuss evidence for human land use in pollen records and provide an overview considered useful for archaeological hypothesis testing and important in distinguishing natural from anthropogenically driven vegetation change. We stress the need for the palynological community to be more familiar with climate variability patterns to correctly attribute the potential causes of observed vegetation dynamics. This manuscript forms part of the wider LOng-Term multi-proxy climate REconstructions and Dynamics in South America – 2k initiative that provides the ideal framework for the integration of the various palaeoclimatic subdisciplines and palaeo-science, thereby jump-starting and fostering multidisciplinary research into environmental change on centennial and millennial timescales.

9 Figuras, 4 Tablas.-- Material suplementario disponible en línea en la página web del editor. Co-pyrolysis of grape seeds and polystyrene was conducted in a fixed-bed reactor, followed by an analysis of the organic phase for possible further application as a drop-in fuel. Significant positive synergistic effects were found with the addition of polystyrene (5–40 wt%) to the conventional pyrolysis of grape seeds. There was a considerable improvement in the organic phase yield, in particular, reaching values over 80 wt%, markedly higher than those obtained from conventional pyrolysis (61 wt%). Fuel properties of the bio-oil were also upgraded, with a decrease in oxygen content and an increase in the heating value. An organic bio-oil fraction with pH values ranging from 5.4 to 6.2 was obtained, reducing the issues associated with handling bio-oils obtained from common pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass, usually ranging pH between 2 and 3. Finally, an increment in the desired compounds, mainly aromatics, was also attained, while at the same time achieving a low content of undesired compounds, such as phenols. It was demonstrated that polystyrene can act as a H2-donor, favoring oligomerization, cyclation and hydrodeoxygenation reactions into aromatic compounds.

Validación del método aplicado a la malla del reanálisis en Fernández-Granja, J.A., Brands, S., Bedia, J. et al. Exploring the limits of the Jenkinson–Collison weather types classification scheme: a global assessment based on various reanalyses. [EN] It has been applied the Jenkinson & Collison classification of Weather Types to Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Island by using the daily NOAA/CIRES/DOE 20th Century Reanalysis (V3) dataset (January-1836/December-2015). WETYDAS v.2.0.0. grid resolution/1.0ºx1.0 lat/long produces 143 series. Weather Types classification includes 8 directional pure, Anticyclonic and Cyclonic pure types, and combination of previous ones in the hybrid types. Non determines cases were spread homogeneously.
