Bludszuweit;Abstract This paper presents a theoretical and experimental investigation about the modelling of a 1:45 scale prototype Wave Energy Converter (WEC). An analytical model is implemented to describe its behaviour in a wave tank. The aim is to provide a contribution to modelling tools used for WEC characterisation and design. Hydrodynamic characterisation software is avoided in favour of a simpler and more versatile design tool destined to a wider range of users. Therefore, an alternative approach is presented, based on mechanical analogies and the use of Matlab/Simulink/SimMechanics environment. This analytical model was constructed using linear wave theory, coupled with a non-linear model for the device and its power take-off system (PTO). Assumptions on incident waves and geometric properties of the device were required and implemented on the basis of literature of naval architecture, ships stabilization and control issues. Simulation results were compared and validated with those obtained in the same range of experimental tests of the prototype in wave tank. Trends and values of both investigation techniques show a good agreement, indicating the validity of the methodology adopted and leaving space for future improvements of the same. Finally, as example of application, the model was applied in a show case in order to estimate the energy yield by the WEC if scaled to real size, using Froude scaling. Results are encouraging and show the viability of the proposed design.

This technique is particularly suitable for transients that involve core spatial asymmetric phenomena and strong feedback effects between core neutronics and reactor loop thermal-hydraulics. Such complex interactions are encountered under normal and abnormal operating conditions of a boiling water reactors (BWR). In such reactors Oscillations may take place owing to the dynamic behavior of the liquid-steam mixture used for removing the thermal power. Therefore, it is necessary to be able to detect in a reliable way these oscillations. The purpose of this work is to characterize one aspect of these unstable behaviors using the coupled codes technique. The evaluation is performed against Peach Bottom-2 low-flow stability tests number 3 using the coupled RELAP5/PARCS code. In this transient dynamically complex neutron kinetics coupling with thermal-hydraulics events take place in response to a core pressure perturbation. The calculated coupled code results are herein assessed and compared against the available experimental data.

Biodiesel is conveniently manufactured from vegetable oils by transesterification of triglycerides with methanol. However, the process brings about the concurrent formation of glycerol, which may become an oversupplied chemical if biodiesel production keeps growing. A novel biodiesel-like material (abbreviated as DMC-BioD) was developed by reacting soybean oil with dimethyl carbonate (DMC), which avoided the co-production of glycerol. The main difference between DMC-BioD and biodiesel produced from vegetable oil and methanol (MeOH-biodiesel) was the presence of fatty acid glycerol carbonate monoesters (FAGCs) in addition to FAMEs. In the following study, details regarding synthesis and composition of DMC-BioD are provided along with physical properties relevant for its use as a fuel. In addition, the production of potential pyrogenic contaminants was investigated by analytical pyrolysis and compared with those from MeOH-biodiesel, and the model compounds tristearin, triolein, trilinolein and oleic acid glycerol carbonate ester (OAGC). The presence of FAGCs influenced both fuel and flow properties, while the distribution of main pyrogenic compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), was little affected. Benefits and drawbacks of DMC as a candidate transmethylating reagent for producing biofuel from renewable resources and alternative co-products (glycerol carbonate and glycerol dicarbonate) are discussed.

The Partially-Stirred Reactor model assumes that reactions are confined in a specific region of the computational cell, whose mass fraction depends both on the mixing and the chemical time scales. Therefore, the appropriate choice of mixing and chemical time scales becomes crucial to ensure the accuracy of the numerical simulation prediction. Results show that the most appropriate choice for mixing time scale in Moderate or Intense Low oxygen Dilution combustion regime is to use a dynamic evaluation, in which the ratio between the variance of mixture fraction and its dissipation rate is adopted, rather than global estimations based on Kolmogorov or integral mixing scales. This is supported by the validation of the numerical results against experimental profiles of temperature and species mass fractions, available from measurements on the Adelaide Jet in Hot Co-flow burner. Different approaches for chemical time scale evaluation are also compared, using the species formation rates, the reaction rates and the eigenvalues of the formation rate Jacobian matrix. Different co-flow oxygen dilution levels and Reynolds numbers are considered in the validation work, to evaluate the applicability of Partially-Stirred Reactor approach over a wide range of operating conditions. Moreover, the influence of specifying uniform and non-uniform boundary conditions for the chemical scalars is assessed. The present work sheds light on the key mechanisms of turbulence-chemistry interactions in advanced combustion regimes. At the same time, it provides essential information to advance the predictive nature of computational tools used by scientists and engineers, to support the development of new technologies.

Related consumptions due to heating, cooling, and lighting appear, in most cases, very high and expensive. Since the real estate is renewed with a very small percentage each year and current trends suggest reusing the old structures, strategies for improving energy efficiency and sustainability should focus not only on new buildings, but also and especially on existing ones. Architectural renovation of existing buildings could provide an opportunity to enhance their energy efficiency, by working on the improvement of envelopes and energy supply systems. It has also to be noted that the measures aimed to improve the energy performance of buildings should pay particular attention to the cost-effectiveness of the interventions. In general, there is a lack of well-established methods for retrofitting, but if a case study achieves effective results, the adopted strategies and methodologies can be successfully replicated for similar kinds of buildings. In this paper, an iterative methodology for energy retrofit of commercial buildings is presented, together with a specific application on an existing office building. The case study is particularly significant as it is placed in an urban climatic context characterized by cold winters and hot summers; consequently, HVAC energy consumption is considerable throughout the year. The analysis and simulations of energy performance before and after the intervention, along with measured data on real energy performance, demonstrate the validity of the applied approach. The specifically developed design and refurbishment methodology, presented in this work, could be also assumed as a reference in similar operations.

Part of these costs can be recovered by transforming some of the many existing energy dissipations in electric energy by means of economic turbines. In this study an experimental work has been carried out: 1) to test the performance of an economic Cross-Flow turbine which maintains high efficiency within a large range of water discharges, and 2) to validate a new approximated formula relating main inlet velocity to inlet pressure. It is proved that the proposed formula, according to some simplifying assumption, exactly links inlet velocity to inlet pressure according to any possible geometry of the Cross-Flow turbine.

A bioenergy village approach has not been applied in Macedonia yet, and it is at a nascent stage of implementation in other South-Eastern European countries. This work aims to integrate a techno-economic, social and environmental assessment and an implementation strategy into a bioenergy village concept, which is not often seen in works dedicated to bioenergy villages and biomass based heating systems. The assessment was conducted by means of energy audit and project-related tools, whilst the strategy was composed by bioenergy working group meetings. Results show that a biomass based district heating system is a more attractive solution for heating several public buildings instead of a fossil fuelled system, with numerous associated benefits. Such concepts can be replicated with variety of renewables, thus contributing to sustainable development pathways of small communities.

In this paper, a battery module is proposed and sized as an innovative solution to replace the diesel engine in the freight locomotives equipped with diesel last mile module currently available on the market. Indeed, nowadays there are well-developed technologies of lithium-ion batteries, coming from road transportation system and some of them are being already tested in railway systems, with promising results. An estimation of the total energy necessary to compose the train and to move it under an energized catenary is carry out using traction diagrams: the sizing of the traction battery, of automotive type made by Lithium Werks, will be based on this estimated value. The economic feasibility of the proposed system is then presented using break-even analysis by presenting three different scenarios: two at the current conditions and one at 2030. Finally, the proposed electrical circuit is simulated in Matlab Simulink environment, to verify its actual stability and to show a start-up cycle.

Olesen;The aim of this study was to determine favorable operation conditions for ceiling panels containing phase change materials (PCM) for cooling applications in office rooms. A recently renovated room in the Technical University of Denmark was used to have realistic boundary conditions. Using TRNSYS 17, the performance of the PCM panels during the cooling season in passive operation, discharge by air, and discharge by water circulation were investigated. A set of simulations were performed during a representative week in the cooling period. The room was simulated with no climatic systems, PCM without active discharge, ventilation during occupied hours only, and PCM with ventilation during occupied hours. Afterwards, two discharge methods were investigated, night ventilation at different flow rates and water circulation in pipes embedded in the panels. A parametric analysis was performed to identify the influence of operation factors in the thermal environment of the room. The parameters studied were the water flow rate, supply water temperature and circulation schedule as well as the conductivity of the PCM. After selecting different operating conditions of the water discharge, simulations were performed from May to October to observe the performance of the selected operation conditions. The results show that the PCM is more effective to provide adequate indoor thermal conditions if it is discharged actively by means of water. The parameters that affect the thermal indoor environment the most are the water circulation schedule, the water supply temperature, and the PCM thermal conductivity. The water flow rate did not have a significant influence. The study shows the importance of selecting an appropriate operation and control strategy for the PCM system. The process used in the study can be potentially used as a procedure for the design of similar climatic systems to determine if active discharge of the PCM is needed and if yes, which discharge method is needed.

Two series of data are presented: the first in acid solutions was used to derive information about the electronic structure of the samples, whereas measurements in equimolar ferro/ferri cyanide solutions were performed to test the activity of the samples towards charge transfer reaction. Flat band potential as well as energy levels of conduction and valence bands were calculated for new and aged samples. These parameters, together with the current voltage response, are crucial information for a comprehensive interpretation of the behaviour of samples.

Bludszuweit;Abstract This paper presents a theoretical and experimental investigation about the modelling of a 1:45 scale prototype Wave Energy Converter (WEC). An analytical model is implemented to describe its behaviour in a wave tank. The aim is to provide a contribution to modelling tools used for WEC characterisation and design. Hydrodynamic characterisation software is avoided in favour of a simpler and more versatile design tool destined to a wider range of users. Therefore, an alternative approach is presented, based on mechanical analogies and the use of Matlab/Simulink/SimMechanics environment. This analytical model was constructed using linear wave theory, coupled with a non-linear model for the device and its power take-off system (PTO). Assumptions on incident waves and geometric properties of the device were required and implemented on the basis of literature of naval architecture, ships stabilization and control issues. Simulation results were compared and validated with those obtained in the same range of experimental tests of the prototype in wave tank. Trends and values of both investigation techniques show a good agreement, indicating the validity of the methodology adopted and leaving space for future improvements of the same. Finally, as example of application, the model was applied in a show case in order to estimate the energy yield by the WEC if scaled to real size, using Froude scaling. Results are encouraging and show the viability of the proposed design.

This technique is particularly suitable for transients that involve core spatial asymmetric phenomena and strong feedback effects between core neutronics and reactor loop thermal-hydraulics. Such complex interactions are encountered under normal and abnormal operating conditions of a boiling water reactors (BWR). In such reactors Oscillations may take place owing to the dynamic behavior of the liquid-steam mixture used for removing the thermal power. Therefore, it is necessary to be able to detect in a reliable way these oscillations. The purpose of this work is to characterize one aspect of these unstable behaviors using the coupled codes technique. The evaluation is performed against Peach Bottom-2 low-flow stability tests number 3 using the coupled RELAP5/PARCS code. In this transient dynamically complex neutron kinetics coupling with thermal-hydraulics events take place in response to a core pressure perturbation. The calculated coupled code results are herein assessed and compared against the available experimental data.

Biodiesel is conveniently manufactured from vegetable oils by transesterification of triglycerides with methanol. However, the process brings about the concurrent formation of glycerol, which may become an oversupplied chemical if biodiesel production keeps growing. A novel biodiesel-like material (abbreviated as DMC-BioD) was developed by reacting soybean oil with dimethyl carbonate (DMC), which avoided the co-production of glycerol. The main difference between DMC-BioD and biodiesel produced from vegetable oil and methanol (MeOH-biodiesel) was the presence of fatty acid glycerol carbonate monoesters (FAGCs) in addition to FAMEs. In the following study, details regarding synthesis and composition of DMC-BioD are provided along with physical properties relevant for its use as a fuel. In addition, the production of potential pyrogenic contaminants was investigated by analytical pyrolysis and compared with those from MeOH-biodiesel, and the model compounds tristearin, triolein, trilinolein and oleic acid glycerol carbonate ester (OAGC). The presence of FAGCs influenced both fuel and flow properties, while the distribution of main pyrogenic compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), was little affected. Benefits and drawbacks of DMC as a candidate transmethylating reagent for producing biofuel from renewable resources and alternative co-products (glycerol carbonate and glycerol dicarbonate) are discussed.

The Partially-Stirred Reactor model assumes that reactions are confined in a specific region of the computational cell, whose mass fraction depends both on the mixing and the chemical time scales. Therefore, the appropriate choice of mixing and chemical time scales becomes crucial to ensure the accuracy of the numerical simulation prediction. Results show that the most appropriate choice for mixing time scale in Moderate or Intense Low oxygen Dilution combustion regime is to use a dynamic evaluation, in which the ratio between the variance of mixture fraction and its dissipation rate is adopted, rather than global estimations based on Kolmogorov or integral mixing scales. This is supported by the validation of the numerical results against experimental profiles of temperature and species mass fractions, available from measurements on the Adelaide Jet in Hot Co-flow burner. Different approaches for chemical time scale evaluation are also compared, using the species formation rates, the reaction rates and the eigenvalues of the formation rate Jacobian matrix. Different co-flow oxygen dilution levels and Reynolds numbers are considered in the validation work, to evaluate the applicability of Partially-Stirred Reactor approach over a wide range of operating conditions. Moreover, the influence of specifying uniform and non-uniform boundary conditions for the chemical scalars is assessed. The present work sheds light on the key mechanisms of turbulence-chemistry interactions in advanced combustion regimes. At the same time, it provides essential information to advance the predictive nature of computational tools used by scientists and engineers, to support the development of new technologies.

Related consumptions due to heating, cooling, and lighting appear, in most cases, very high and expensive. Since the real estate is renewed with a very small percentage each year and current trends suggest reusing the old structures, strategies for improving energy efficiency and sustainability should focus not only on new buildings, but also and especially on existing ones. Architectural renovation of existing buildings could provide an opportunity to enhance their energy efficiency, by working on the improvement of envelopes and energy supply systems. It has also to be noted that the measures aimed to improve the energy performance of buildings should pay particular attention to the cost-effectiveness of the interventions. In general, there is a lack of well-established methods for retrofitting, but if a case study achieves effective results, the adopted strategies and methodologies can be successfully replicated for similar kinds of buildings. In this paper, an iterative methodology for energy retrofit of commercial buildings is presented, together with a specific application on an existing office building. The case study is particularly significant as it is placed in an urban climatic context characterized by cold winters and hot summers; consequently, HVAC energy consumption is considerable throughout the year. The analysis and simulations of energy performance before and after the intervention, along with measured data on real energy performance, demonstrate the validity of the applied approach. The specifically developed design and refurbishment methodology, presented in this work, could be also assumed as a reference in similar operations.

A bioenergy village approach has not been applied in Macedonia yet, and it is at a nascent stage of implementation in other South-Eastern European countries. This work aims to integrate a techno-economic, social and environmental assessment and an implementation strategy into a bioenergy village concept, which is not often seen in works dedicated to bioenergy villages and biomass based heating systems. The assessment was conducted by means of energy audit and project-related tools, whilst the strategy was composed by bioenergy working group meetings. Results show that a biomass based district heating system is a more attractive solution for heating several public buildings instead of a fossil fuelled system, with numerous associated benefits. Such concepts can be replicated with variety of renewables, thus contributing to sustainable development pathways of small communities.

In this paper, a battery module is proposed and sized as an innovative solution to replace the diesel engine in the freight locomotives equipped with diesel last mile module currently available on the market. Indeed, nowadays there are well-developed technologies of lithium-ion batteries, coming from road transportation system and some of them are being already tested in railway systems, with promising results. An estimation of the total energy necessary to compose the train and to move it under an energized catenary is carry out using traction diagrams: the sizing of the traction battery, of automotive type made by Lithium Werks, will be based on this estimated value. The economic feasibility of the proposed system is then presented using break-even analysis by presenting three different scenarios: two at the current conditions and one at 2030. Finally, the proposed electrical circuit is simulated in Matlab Simulink environment, to verify its actual stability and to show a start-up cycle.

Olesen;The aim of this study was to determine favorable operation conditions for ceiling panels containing phase change materials (PCM) for cooling applications in office rooms. A recently renovated room in the Technical University of Denmark was used to have realistic boundary conditions. Using TRNSYS 17, the performance of the PCM panels during the cooling season in passive operation, discharge by air, and discharge by water circulation were investigated. A set of simulations were performed during a representative week in the cooling period. The room was simulated with no climatic systems, PCM without active discharge, ventilation during occupied hours only, and PCM with ventilation during occupied hours. Afterwards, two discharge methods were investigated, night ventilation at different flow rates and water circulation in pipes embedded in the panels. A parametric analysis was performed to identify the influence of operation factors in the thermal environment of the room. The parameters studied were the water flow rate, supply water temperature and circulation schedule as well as the conductivity of the PCM. After selecting different operating conditions of the water discharge, simulations were performed from May to October to observe the performance of the selected operation conditions. The results show that the PCM is more effective to provide adequate indoor thermal conditions if it is discharged actively by means of water. The parameters that affect the thermal indoor environment the most are the water circulation schedule, the water supply temperature, and the PCM thermal conductivity. The water flow rate did not have a significant influence. The study shows the importance of selecting an appropriate operation and control strategy for the PCM system. The process used in the study can be potentially used as a procedure for the design of similar climatic systems to determine if active discharge of the PCM is needed and if yes, which discharge method is needed.

Two series of data are presented: the first in acid solutions was used to derive information about the electronic structure of the samples, whereas measurements in equimolar ferro/ferri cyanide solutions were performed to test the activity of the samples towards charge transfer reaction. Flat band potential as well as energy levels of conduction and valence bands were calculated for new and aged samples. These parameters, together with the current voltage response, are crucial information for a comprehensive interpretation of the behaviour of samples.
