Abstract While the employment of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is a well-established technique in Internal Combustion Engines to limit NOx emissions, its adoption in Gas Turbine engines hasn’t yet found a practical application due to its expensive and complex installation that doesn’t justify the emissions reduction when compared to already established DLN combustion technologies. EGR becomes an interesting option in GT engines considering the possibility of increasing the CO2 content of the exhaust gases to improve the efficiency of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) units. However, the decrease in oxygen content of the combustion air is extremely challenging in terms of combustion stability and therefore of engine operability. In the present work, a low NOx burner was studied at ambient pressure in a reactive single burner test rig. The burner was fed with methane and characterised in terms of emissions and stability limits at different operating conditions. In addition, the flame position and shape were studied through OH* chemiluminescence imaging together with the flow field thanks to PIV measurements. The effects of CO2 addition on the flame were then investigated at different EGR increasing levels, highlighting the impact of the oxygen content on the combustion reaction intensity. Variations in emissions and burner stability limits in terms of maximum sustainable CO2 content were also studied, to detail the burner operating window. Data have been thoroughly analysed to gather information on the burner behaviour to support the design of new technical solutions capable of ensuring both proper flame stability and low CO and NOx emissions.

The use of graphene as transparent conducting layer in devices that require high temperature processing is proposed. The material shows stability upon thermal treatments up to 1100 °C ifc apped with a sacrificial silicon layer. The use of Cu foil or evaporated Cu as catalysts in Catalytic-Chemical Vapor Deposition growth gives rise to graphene ofs imilar properties, which represents a promising result in view of its direct integration in microelectronic devices. Photovoltaic p-i-n thin film devices were fab- ricated on the as-deposited or annealed graphene membranes and compared with similar devices that incorporate as-deposited Indium Tin Oxide. No degradation in series resistance is observed for the annealed device. A 3.7% and 2.8% photovoltaic conversion efficiency is observed on the devices fabricated on as-transferred and on annealed graphene respectively. The major limitation derives from the high sheet resistance of the as-transferred state-of-the-art material. The results opens the way to the use of graphene in applications that require transparent conducting layers resistant to high temperature pro- cessing.

In the present hadrontherapy scenario, there is a growing interest in exploring the capabilities of different ion species other than protons and carbons. The possibility of using different ions paves the way for new radiotherapy approaches, such as the multi-ions treatment, where radiation could vary according to target volume, shape, depth and histologic characteristics of the tumor. For these reasons, in this paper, the study and understanding of biological-relevant quantities was extended for the case of 4He ion. Approach. Geant4 Monte Carlo based algorithms for dose- and track-averaged LET (Linear Energy Transfer) calculations, were validated for 4He ions and for the case of a mixed field characterised by the presence of secondary ions from both target and projectile fragmentation. The simulated dose and track averaged LETs were compared with the corresponding dose and frequency mean values of the lineal energy, y D ¯ and y ¯ F , derived from experimental microdosimetric spectra. Two microdosimetric experimental campaigns were carried out at the Italian eye proton therapy facility of the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN-LNS, Catania, I) using two different microdosimeters: the MicroPlus probe and the nano-TEPC (Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter). Main results. A good agreement of L ¯ d Total and L ¯ t Total with y ¯ D and y ¯ T experimentally measured with both microdosimetric detectors MicroPlus and nano-TEPC in two configurations: full energy and modulated 4He ion beam, was found. Significance. The results of this study certify the use of a very effective tool for the precise calculation of LET, given by a Monte Carlo approach which has the advantage of allowing detailed simulation and tracking of nuclear interactions, even in complex clinical scenarios.

This study evaluated, for the first time, vermifiltration as a post-treatment for the digestate from a low-tech digester implemented in a small-scale farm, treating cattle manure and cheese whey under psychrophilic conditions. Vermifiltration performance was monitored in terms of solids, organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens removal efficiency. In addition, the growth of earthworms (Eisenia foetida) and their role in the process was evaluated. Finally, the vermicompost and the effluent of the vermifilter were characterized in order to assess their potential reuse in agriculture. Vermifilters showed high removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (55-90%), total solids (60-80%), ammonium nitrogen (83-97%), and phosphate-P (28-49%). Earthworms effectively grew and reproduced on digestate (i.e. earthworms number increased by 183%), enhancing the vermifiltration performance, while reducing clogging and odour-related issues. Both the vermicompost and effluent produced complied with legislation limits established for soil improvers and wastewater for fertigation, respectively. Indeed, there was an absence of pathogens and non-detectable heavy metals concentrations. Vermifiltration may be thus considered a suitable post-treatment option for the digestate from low-tech digesters, allowing for its safe agricultural reuse and boosting the circular bioeconomy in small-scale farms.

AbstractSustainable biorefineries have a critical role to play in our common future. The need to provide more goods using renewable resources, combined with advances in science and technology, has provided a receptive environment for biorefinery systems development. Biorefineries offer the promise of using fewer non‐renewable resources, reducing CO2 emissions, creating new employment, and spurring innovation using clean and efficient technologies. Lessons are being learned from the establishment of first‐generation biofuel operations. The factors that are key to answering the question of biorefinery sustainability include: the type of feedstock, the conversion technologies and their respective conversion and energy efficiencies, the types of products (including coproducts) that are manufactured, and what products are substituted by the bioproducts. The BIOPOL review of eight existing biorefineries indicates that new efficient biorefineries can revitalize existing industries and promote regional development, especially in the R&D area. Establishment can be facilitated if existing facilities are used, if there is at least one product which is immediately marketable, and if supportive policies are in place. Economic, environmental, and social dimensions need to be evaluated in an integrated sustainability assessment. Sustainability principles, criteria, and indicators are emerging for bioenergy, biofuels, and bioproducts. Practical assessment methodologies, including data systems, are critical for both sustainable design and to assure consumers, investors, and governments that they are doing the ‘right thing’ by purchasing a certain bioproduct. If designed using lifecycle thinking, biorefineries can be profitable, socially responsible, and produce goods with less environmental impact than conventional products … and potentially even be restorative!. Xiyu Ren is a DPhil candidate at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, the School of Geography and the Environment, and the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School of the University of Oxford. Her research interests lie in energy and environmental economics, particularly in energy modeling, electricity market design, times-series analysis, and environmental policies. Iacopo Savelli is a postdoctoral researcher in applied economics at the GREEN Centre, Bocconi University. He is the PI of the peer-reviewed project “Decarbonising the energy system by incentivising energy storage in the right places,” investigating the role of grid-scale energy storage in decarbonizing the energy system. Previously, he was a postdoc at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Oxford working on energy market design. He holds a PhD in engineering, an MS in finance, and a BS in economics. He taught selected energy economics topics at the University of Oxford and the University of Siena. Thomas Morstyn is associate professor in power systems with the Department of Engineering Science of the University of Oxford, where he leads a research group focused on power system control and energy market design. He is also a tutorial fellow at Hertford College and an honorary fellow at the University of Edinburgh. He is an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems and co-chairs the IEEE Power & Energy Society Taskforce on Quantum Computing for Power System Operations. His research focuses on the design of control systems and markets to enable the large-scale integration of distributed power system flexibility.

T22, to assess their potential application as biocontrol agents by using the ecofriendly and low-cost substrate Corn Steep Liquor (CSL) medium. Analyses of antagonism through volatile organic compounds (VOCs) production, biofilm formation, and growth performance were carried out. Methods and results Dual antagonism assay showed that all strains displayed significant antagonistic activity against Botrytis cinerea through VOCs. Gas chromatography demonstrated that strains in the CSL exhibited higher VOCs production than nutrient medium. Moreover, enhanced biofilm formation analysed by Calgary Biofilm Device, growth, and biomass were noted in CSL cultures. Pseudomonas protegens MP12, which showed higher cell concentration and biomass yield, was selected for freeze-drying treatments. Storage cell viability assays evidenced that it can be effectively preserved for nearly 7 months at 4°C. Conclusion The results here obtained showed that CLS medium enhanced VOCs production, biofilm formation, growth, and biomass of the antagonistic bacteria of the three strains. Eventually, the more effective strain P. protegens MP12 can be stored for nearly 7 months at 4°C.

Power system controls are vulnerable to cyber-attacks that can seriously affect and even inhibit their operation. Such attacks may affect large portions of the power system, make repair difficult and cause huge societal impact, so pressure to ensure cyber-security of control and communication systems is now strong worldwide. Several cyber-security frameworks were developed, but it is rather difficult to anticipate adoption costs and benefits, and this hampers their generalised adoption. T his paper focuses on the outcome of two case studies (concerning the Italian power generation and the Polish transmission systems. The socio-economic impact of failures and the costs of standard adoption are estimated on an objective basis. It is up to public authorities to decide whether to require the adoption of security standards to operators in the electric system. The nature of public good of security underlines the necessity of public support for this operation, but we discuss the extent and the management of this support.

Abstract While the employment of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is a well-established technique in Internal Combustion Engines to limit NOx emissions, its adoption in Gas Turbine engines hasn’t yet found a practical application due to its expensive and complex installation that doesn’t justify the emissions reduction when compared to already established DLN combustion technologies. EGR becomes an interesting option in GT engines considering the possibility of increasing the CO2 content of the exhaust gases to improve the efficiency of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) units. However, the decrease in oxygen content of the combustion air is extremely challenging in terms of combustion stability and therefore of engine operability. In the present work, a low NOx burner was studied at ambient pressure in a reactive single burner test rig. The burner was fed with methane and characterised in terms of emissions and stability limits at different operating conditions. In addition, the flame position and shape were studied through OH* chemiluminescence imaging together with the flow field thanks to PIV measurements. The effects of CO2 addition on the flame were then investigated at different EGR increasing levels, highlighting the impact of the oxygen content on the combustion reaction intensity. Variations in emissions and burner stability limits in terms of maximum sustainable CO2 content were also studied, to detail the burner operating window. Data have been thoroughly analysed to gather information on the burner behaviour to support the design of new technical solutions capable of ensuring both proper flame stability and low CO and NOx emissions.

The use of graphene as transparent conducting layer in devices that require high temperature processing is proposed. The material shows stability upon thermal treatments up to 1100 °C ifc apped with a sacrificial silicon layer. The use of Cu foil or evaporated Cu as catalysts in Catalytic-Chemical Vapor Deposition growth gives rise to graphene ofs imilar properties, which represents a promising result in view of its direct integration in microelectronic devices. Photovoltaic p-i-n thin film devices were fab- ricated on the as-deposited or annealed graphene membranes and compared with similar devices that incorporate as-deposited Indium Tin Oxide. No degradation in series resistance is observed for the annealed device. A 3.7% and 2.8% photovoltaic conversion efficiency is observed on the devices fabricated on as-transferred and on annealed graphene respectively. The major limitation derives from the high sheet resistance of the as-transferred state-of-the-art material. The results opens the way to the use of graphene in applications that require transparent conducting layers resistant to high temperature pro- cessing.

In the present hadrontherapy scenario, there is a growing interest in exploring the capabilities of different ion species other than protons and carbons. The possibility of using different ions paves the way for new radiotherapy approaches, such as the multi-ions treatment, where radiation could vary according to target volume, shape, depth and histologic characteristics of the tumor. For these reasons, in this paper, the study and understanding of biological-relevant quantities was extended for the case of 4He ion. Approach. Geant4 Monte Carlo based algorithms for dose- and track-averaged LET (Linear Energy Transfer) calculations, were validated for 4He ions and for the case of a mixed field characterised by the presence of secondary ions from both target and projectile fragmentation. The simulated dose and track averaged LETs were compared with the corresponding dose and frequency mean values of the lineal energy, y D ¯ and y ¯ F , derived from experimental microdosimetric spectra. Two microdosimetric experimental campaigns were carried out at the Italian eye proton therapy facility of the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN-LNS, Catania, I) using two different microdosimeters: the MicroPlus probe and the nano-TEPC (Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter). Main results. A good agreement of L ¯ d Total and L ¯ t Total with y ¯ D and y ¯ T experimentally measured with both microdosimetric detectors MicroPlus and nano-TEPC in two configurations: full energy and modulated 4He ion beam, was found. Significance. The results of this study certify the use of a very effective tool for the precise calculation of LET, given by a Monte Carlo approach which has the advantage of allowing detailed simulation and tracking of nuclear interactions, even in complex clinical scenarios.

This study evaluated, for the first time, vermifiltration as a post-treatment for the digestate from a low-tech digester implemented in a small-scale farm, treating cattle manure and cheese whey under psychrophilic conditions. Vermifiltration performance was monitored in terms of solids, organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens removal efficiency. In addition, the growth of earthworms (Eisenia foetida) and their role in the process was evaluated. Finally, the vermicompost and the effluent of the vermifilter were characterized in order to assess their potential reuse in agriculture. Vermifilters showed high removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (55-90%), total solids (60-80%), ammonium nitrogen (83-97%), and phosphate-P (28-49%). Earthworms effectively grew and reproduced on digestate (i.e. earthworms number increased by 183%), enhancing the vermifiltration performance, while reducing clogging and odour-related issues. Both the vermicompost and effluent produced complied with legislation limits established for soil improvers and wastewater for fertigation, respectively. Indeed, there was an absence of pathogens and non-detectable heavy metals concentrations. Vermifiltration may be thus considered a suitable post-treatment option for the digestate from low-tech digesters, allowing for its safe agricultural reuse and boosting the circular bioeconomy in small-scale farms.

AbstractSustainable biorefineries have a critical role to play in our common future. The need to provide more goods using renewable resources, combined with advances in science and technology, has provided a receptive environment for biorefinery systems development. Biorefineries offer the promise of using fewer non‐renewable resources, reducing CO2 emissions, creating new employment, and spurring innovation using clean and efficient technologies. Lessons are being learned from the establishment of first‐generation biofuel operations. The factors that are key to answering the question of biorefinery sustainability include: the type of feedstock, the conversion technologies and their respective conversion and energy efficiencies, the types of products (including coproducts) that are manufactured, and what products are substituted by the bioproducts. The BIOPOL review of eight existing biorefineries indicates that new efficient biorefineries can revitalize existing industries and promote regional development, especially in the R&D area. Establishment can be facilitated if existing facilities are used, if there is at least one product which is immediately marketable, and if supportive policies are in place. Economic, environmental, and social dimensions need to be evaluated in an integrated sustainability assessment. Sustainability principles, criteria, and indicators are emerging for bioenergy, biofuels, and bioproducts. Practical assessment methodologies, including data systems, are critical for both sustainable design and to assure consumers, investors, and governments that they are doing the ‘right thing’ by purchasing a certain bioproduct. If designed using lifecycle thinking, biorefineries can be profitable, socially responsible, and produce goods with less environmental impact than conventional products … and potentially even be restorative!. Xiyu Ren is a DPhil candidate at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, the School of Geography and the Environment, and the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School of the University of Oxford. Her research interests lie in energy and environmental economics, particularly in energy modeling, electricity market design, times-series analysis, and environmental policies. Iacopo Savelli is a postdoctoral researcher in applied economics at the GREEN Centre, Bocconi University. He is the PI of the peer-reviewed project “Decarbonising the energy system by incentivising energy storage in the right places,” investigating the role of grid-scale energy storage in decarbonizing the energy system. Previously, he was a postdoc at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Oxford working on energy market design. He holds a PhD in engineering, an MS in finance, and a BS in economics. He taught selected energy economics topics at the University of Oxford and the University of Siena. Thomas Morstyn is associate professor in power systems with the Department of Engineering Science of the University of Oxford, where he leads a research group focused on power system control and energy market design. He is also a tutorial fellow at Hertford College and an honorary fellow at the University of Edinburgh. He is an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems and co-chairs the IEEE Power & Energy Society Taskforce on Quantum Computing for Power System Operations. His research focuses on the design of control systems and markets to enable the large-scale integration of distributed power system flexibility.

T22, to assess their potential application as biocontrol agents by using the ecofriendly and low-cost substrate Corn Steep Liquor (CSL) medium. Analyses of antagonism through volatile organic compounds (VOCs) production, biofilm formation, and growth performance were carried out. Methods and results Dual antagonism assay showed that all strains displayed significant antagonistic activity against Botrytis cinerea through VOCs. Gas chromatography demonstrated that strains in the CSL exhibited higher VOCs production than nutrient medium. Moreover, enhanced biofilm formation analysed by Calgary Biofilm Device, growth, and biomass were noted in CSL cultures. Pseudomonas protegens MP12, which showed higher cell concentration and biomass yield, was selected for freeze-drying treatments. Storage cell viability assays evidenced that it can be effectively preserved for nearly 7 months at 4°C. Conclusion The results here obtained showed that CLS medium enhanced VOCs production, biofilm formation, growth, and biomass of the antagonistic bacteria of the three strains. Eventually, the more effective strain P. protegens MP12 can be stored for nearly 7 months at 4°C.

Power system controls are vulnerable to cyber-attacks that can seriously affect and even inhibit their operation. Such attacks may affect large portions of the power system, make repair difficult and cause huge societal impact, so pressure to ensure cyber-security of control and communication systems is now strong worldwide. Several cyber-security frameworks were developed, but it is rather difficult to anticipate adoption costs and benefits, and this hampers their generalised adoption. T his paper focuses on the outcome of two case studies (concerning the Italian power generation and the Polish transmission systems. The socio-economic impact of failures and the costs of standard adoption are estimated on an objective basis. It is up to public authorities to decide whether to require the adoption of security standards to operators in the electric system. The nature of public good of security underlines the necessity of public support for this operation, but we discuss the extent and the management of this support.
