Nevertheless, sizing these systems is not straightforward since it means matching unpredictable energy sources with uncertain demands while providing the best reliability and costs. In our opinion, the effect of users’ energy consumptions uncertainty on the sizing of these systems has not been appropriately investigated. This paper addresses this issue and analyzes the effect of load profile uncertainty on the off-grid PV systems optimum design. Specifically a novel sizing methodology has been introduced based on: (i) an effective approach of modelling rural energy needs; (ii) an innovative stochastic method which formulates different possible realistic daily load profiles for un-electrified rural areas; (iii) a PV-battery techno-economic analysis via steady-state simulation; (iv) the evaluation of the optimum system sizing via a numerical method based on net present cost and loss of load probability. Finally, the proposed methodology has been applied to find the optimum size of an off-grid PV system for a peri-urban area of Uganda. The results show that the optimum system configurations are significantly affected by load profiles; consequently an approach to identify the robust solution with regards the assumed uncertainty is proposed.

The Partially-Stirred Reactor model assumes that reactions are confined in a specific region of the computational cell, whose mass fraction depends both on the mixing and the chemical time scales. Therefore, the appropriate choice of mixing and chemical time scales becomes crucial to ensure the accuracy of the numerical simulation prediction. Results show that the most appropriate choice for mixing time scale in Moderate or Intense Low oxygen Dilution combustion regime is to use a dynamic evaluation, in which the ratio between the variance of mixture fraction and its dissipation rate is adopted, rather than global estimations based on Kolmogorov or integral mixing scales. This is supported by the validation of the numerical results against experimental profiles of temperature and species mass fractions, available from measurements on the Adelaide Jet in Hot Co-flow burner. Different approaches for chemical time scale evaluation are also compared, using the species formation rates, the reaction rates and the eigenvalues of the formation rate Jacobian matrix. Different co-flow oxygen dilution levels and Reynolds numbers are considered in the validation work, to evaluate the applicability of Partially-Stirred Reactor approach over a wide range of operating conditions. Moreover, the influence of specifying uniform and non-uniform boundary conditions for the chemical scalars is assessed. The present work sheds light on the key mechanisms of turbulence-chemistry interactions in advanced combustion regimes. At the same time, it provides essential information to advance the predictive nature of computational tools used by scientists and engineers, to support the development of new technologies.

Related consumptions due to heating, cooling, and lighting appear, in most cases, very high and expensive. Since the real estate is renewed with a very small percentage each year and current trends suggest reusing the old structures, strategies for improving energy efficiency and sustainability should focus not only on new buildings, but also and especially on existing ones. Architectural renovation of existing buildings could provide an opportunity to enhance their energy efficiency, by working on the improvement of envelopes and energy supply systems. It has also to be noted that the measures aimed to improve the energy performance of buildings should pay particular attention to the cost-effectiveness of the interventions. In general, there is a lack of well-established methods for retrofitting, but if a case study achieves effective results, the adopted strategies and methodologies can be successfully replicated for similar kinds of buildings. In this paper, an iterative methodology for energy retrofit of commercial buildings is presented, together with a specific application on an existing office building. The case study is particularly significant as it is placed in an urban climatic context characterized by cold winters and hot summers; consequently, HVAC energy consumption is considerable throughout the year. The analysis and simulations of energy performance before and after the intervention, along with measured data on real energy performance, demonstrate the validity of the applied approach. The specifically developed design and refurbishment methodology, presented in this work, could be also assumed as a reference in similar operations.

In this paper, a battery module is proposed and sized as an innovative solution to replace the diesel engine in the freight locomotives equipped with diesel last mile module currently available on the market. Indeed, nowadays there are well-developed technologies of lithium-ion batteries, coming from road transportation system and some of them are being already tested in railway systems, with promising results. An estimation of the total energy necessary to compose the train and to move it under an energized catenary is carry out using traction diagrams: the sizing of the traction battery, of automotive type made by Lithium Werks, will be based on this estimated value. The economic feasibility of the proposed system is then presented using break-even analysis by presenting three different scenarios: two at the current conditions and one at 2030. Finally, the proposed electrical circuit is simulated in Matlab Simulink environment, to verify its actual stability and to show a start-up cycle.

Galliano; Gabriele Masera; Thomas Stahl;AbstractAlthough the application of internal insulation to existing perimeter walls poses significant challenges in terms of building physics and loss of habitable space, it is sometimes an inevitable choice because of practical or legislative constraints. Innovative solutions are then required to deliver satisfying performances and reduce nuisance to inhabitants of residential buildings in case they are going to remain in their flats during the retrofit works.Three systems for inner thermal retrofitting purposes have been designed and produced as prototypes. Two of them are composed by silica aerogel containing fibrous material: the first one is a rigid flat laminated panel, the second one is a rollable solution with a fabric finishing layer. The third insulating system is a perlite based board with a hydrophobic layer. All the materials composing the retrofit solutions have been characterized by means of laboratory tests in order to measure their main hygrothermal properties. In fact, some parameters are fundamental for determining the hygrothermal performance of the composite systems: thermal conductivity, at dry and wet state (moisture dependant), water vapour diffusion resistance factor, hygroscopic sorption at isotherm condition and water absorption coefficient. All those measured data were necessary for optimizing the solutions, guaranteeing energy efficiency and vapour open layers to systems that are intended for installation on existing walls.

Many countries have already implemented subsidies on energy efficiency in generation and utilisation, with the aim of decreasing overall consumption and energy intensity of gross domestic product. Meanwhile, researchers have increased interest into alternative energy systems to decrease pollution and use of fossil fuels. Hydrogen, in particular, is proposed as a clean alternative energy vector, as it can be used as energy storage mean or to replace fossil fuels, e.g. for transport. This work analyses the re-vamping of the energy generation system of a paper mill by means of reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs). The aim is not only to increase efficiency on energy generation, but also to create a polygeneration system where hydrogen is produced. Application on a real industrial facility, based in Italy with a production capacity of 60000 t/y of paper, is analysed. First, the current energy system is studied. Then, a novel system based on RSOC is proposed. Each component of the systems (both existing and novel) is defined using operational data, technical datasheet, or models defined with thermodynamic tools. Then, the interaction between them is studied. Primary energy analysis on the novel system is performed, and saving with respect to the current configuration is evaluated. Even if the complexity of the system increases, results show that saving occurs between 2 and 6%. Hydrogen generation is assessed, comparing the RSOC integrated system with proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis, in terms of both primary energy and economics. Results exhibit significant primary energy and good economic performance on hydrogen production with the novel system proposed (hydrogen cost decreases from 10 €/kg to at least 8 €/kg).

An indicator must show a synthetic representation of a real environmental, by using a value or a parameter, so that they can be easily used by policy makers. It is necessary to connect, therefore, the various systems in an appropriately integrated sustainable system. The indicators need to be aggregated based on the structure of the data. Each indicator must to be defined through a weight with reference to another weighted indicator. In this paper is illustrated the calculation of the assigned weights that uses a procedure based on fuzzy logic and to define a model that allows us to estimate the sustainability of a city. The final result is, therefore, a combination of values assigned by expert opinion for the various criteria, processed using fuzzy logic to obtain a weight with significant objectivity and as it is possible to estimate the sustainability of the city through the weights.

The survey focuses on eliciting probabilistic information on the future costs of advanced biofuels and on the potential role of Research, Development and Demonstration (RD&D) efforts in reducing these costs and in supporting the deployment of biofuels in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and non-OECD countries. Fifteen leading experts from different EU member states provide insights on the future potential of advanced biofuel technologies both in terms of costs and diffusion. This information results in a number of policy recommendations with respect to public RD&D strategies and is an important contribution to the integrated assessment modelling community.

The operations involved in the startup procedure, such as seawater supply, energy supply and vacuum generation along the process are considered together with the status of controls to prevent any possible overlapping of these relevant aspects. Segregation of the operations is demonstrated to be essential to prevent any redundancy in the oscillatory behavior of process units that can easily lead to dangerous instabilities of the plant. Moreover, whenever geothermal sources are used for sustainable production of desalinated water, it is fundamental to account for some peculiarities such as certain limitations in controllability and operability of the geothermal source. General guidelines to start up desalination processes are provided; special attention is given to geothermal-supplied plants.

Nevertheless, sizing these systems is not straightforward since it means matching unpredictable energy sources with uncertain demands while providing the best reliability and costs. In our opinion, the effect of users’ energy consumptions uncertainty on the sizing of these systems has not been appropriately investigated. This paper addresses this issue and analyzes the effect of load profile uncertainty on the off-grid PV systems optimum design. Specifically a novel sizing methodology has been introduced based on: (i) an effective approach of modelling rural energy needs; (ii) an innovative stochastic method which formulates different possible realistic daily load profiles for un-electrified rural areas; (iii) a PV-battery techno-economic analysis via steady-state simulation; (iv) the evaluation of the optimum system sizing via a numerical method based on net present cost and loss of load probability. Finally, the proposed methodology has been applied to find the optimum size of an off-grid PV system for a peri-urban area of Uganda. The results show that the optimum system configurations are significantly affected by load profiles; consequently an approach to identify the robust solution with regards the assumed uncertainty is proposed.

The Partially-Stirred Reactor model assumes that reactions are confined in a specific region of the computational cell, whose mass fraction depends both on the mixing and the chemical time scales. Therefore, the appropriate choice of mixing and chemical time scales becomes crucial to ensure the accuracy of the numerical simulation prediction. Results show that the most appropriate choice for mixing time scale in Moderate or Intense Low oxygen Dilution combustion regime is to use a dynamic evaluation, in which the ratio between the variance of mixture fraction and its dissipation rate is adopted, rather than global estimations based on Kolmogorov or integral mixing scales. This is supported by the validation of the numerical results against experimental profiles of temperature and species mass fractions, available from measurements on the Adelaide Jet in Hot Co-flow burner. Different approaches for chemical time scale evaluation are also compared, using the species formation rates, the reaction rates and the eigenvalues of the formation rate Jacobian matrix. Different co-flow oxygen dilution levels and Reynolds numbers are considered in the validation work, to evaluate the applicability of Partially-Stirred Reactor approach over a wide range of operating conditions. Moreover, the influence of specifying uniform and non-uniform boundary conditions for the chemical scalars is assessed. The present work sheds light on the key mechanisms of turbulence-chemistry interactions in advanced combustion regimes. At the same time, it provides essential information to advance the predictive nature of computational tools used by scientists and engineers, to support the development of new technologies.

Related consumptions due to heating, cooling, and lighting appear, in most cases, very high and expensive. Since the real estate is renewed with a very small percentage each year and current trends suggest reusing the old structures, strategies for improving energy efficiency and sustainability should focus not only on new buildings, but also and especially on existing ones. Architectural renovation of existing buildings could provide an opportunity to enhance their energy efficiency, by working on the improvement of envelopes and energy supply systems. It has also to be noted that the measures aimed to improve the energy performance of buildings should pay particular attention to the cost-effectiveness of the interventions. In general, there is a lack of well-established methods for retrofitting, but if a case study achieves effective results, the adopted strategies and methodologies can be successfully replicated for similar kinds of buildings. In this paper, an iterative methodology for energy retrofit of commercial buildings is presented, together with a specific application on an existing office building. The case study is particularly significant as it is placed in an urban climatic context characterized by cold winters and hot summers; consequently, HVAC energy consumption is considerable throughout the year. The analysis and simulations of energy performance before and after the intervention, along with measured data on real energy performance, demonstrate the validity of the applied approach. The specifically developed design and refurbishment methodology, presented in this work, could be also assumed as a reference in similar operations.

In this paper, a battery module is proposed and sized as an innovative solution to replace the diesel engine in the freight locomotives equipped with diesel last mile module currently available on the market. Indeed, nowadays there are well-developed technologies of lithium-ion batteries, coming from road transportation system and some of them are being already tested in railway systems, with promising results. An estimation of the total energy necessary to compose the train and to move it under an energized catenary is carry out using traction diagrams: the sizing of the traction battery, of automotive type made by Lithium Werks, will be based on this estimated value. The economic feasibility of the proposed system is then presented using break-even analysis by presenting three different scenarios: two at the current conditions and one at 2030. Finally, the proposed electrical circuit is simulated in Matlab Simulink environment, to verify its actual stability and to show a start-up cycle.

Galliano; Gabriele Masera; Thomas Stahl;AbstractAlthough the application of internal insulation to existing perimeter walls poses significant challenges in terms of building physics and loss of habitable space, it is sometimes an inevitable choice because of practical or legislative constraints. Innovative solutions are then required to deliver satisfying performances and reduce nuisance to inhabitants of residential buildings in case they are going to remain in their flats during the retrofit works.Three systems for inner thermal retrofitting purposes have been designed and produced as prototypes. Two of them are composed by silica aerogel containing fibrous material: the first one is a rigid flat laminated panel, the second one is a rollable solution with a fabric finishing layer. The third insulating system is a perlite based board with a hydrophobic layer. All the materials composing the retrofit solutions have been characterized by means of laboratory tests in order to measure their main hygrothermal properties. In fact, some parameters are fundamental for determining the hygrothermal performance of the composite systems: thermal conductivity, at dry and wet state (moisture dependant), water vapour diffusion resistance factor, hygroscopic sorption at isotherm condition and water absorption coefficient. All those measured data were necessary for optimizing the solutions, guaranteeing energy efficiency and vapour open layers to systems that are intended for installation on existing walls.

Many countries have already implemented subsidies on energy efficiency in generation and utilisation, with the aim of decreasing overall consumption and energy intensity of gross domestic product. Meanwhile, researchers have increased interest into alternative energy systems to decrease pollution and use of fossil fuels. Hydrogen, in particular, is proposed as a clean alternative energy vector, as it can be used as energy storage mean or to replace fossil fuels, e.g. for transport. This work analyses the re-vamping of the energy generation system of a paper mill by means of reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs). The aim is not only to increase efficiency on energy generation, but also to create a polygeneration system where hydrogen is produced. Application on a real industrial facility, based in Italy with a production capacity of 60000 t/y of paper, is analysed. First, the current energy system is studied. Then, a novel system based on RSOC is proposed. Each component of the systems (both existing and novel) is defined using operational data, technical datasheet, or models defined with thermodynamic tools. Then, the interaction between them is studied. Primary energy analysis on the novel system is performed, and saving with respect to the current configuration is evaluated. Even if the complexity of the system increases, results show that saving occurs between 2 and 6%. Hydrogen generation is assessed, comparing the RSOC integrated system with proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis, in terms of both primary energy and economics. Results exhibit significant primary energy and good economic performance on hydrogen production with the novel system proposed (hydrogen cost decreases from 10 €/kg to at least 8 €/kg).

An indicator must show a synthetic representation of a real environmental, by using a value or a parameter, so that they can be easily used by policy makers. It is necessary to connect, therefore, the various systems in an appropriately integrated sustainable system. The indicators need to be aggregated based on the structure of the data. Each indicator must to be defined through a weight with reference to another weighted indicator. In this paper is illustrated the calculation of the assigned weights that uses a procedure based on fuzzy logic and to define a model that allows us to estimate the sustainability of a city. The final result is, therefore, a combination of values assigned by expert opinion for the various criteria, processed using fuzzy logic to obtain a weight with significant objectivity and as it is possible to estimate the sustainability of the city through the weights.

The survey focuses on eliciting probabilistic information on the future costs of advanced biofuels and on the potential role of Research, Development and Demonstration (RD&D) efforts in reducing these costs and in supporting the deployment of biofuels in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and non-OECD countries. Fifteen leading experts from different EU member states provide insights on the future potential of advanced biofuel technologies both in terms of costs and diffusion. This information results in a number of policy recommendations with respect to public RD&D strategies and is an important contribution to the integrated assessment modelling community.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2013Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Flavio Manenti; Giorgio Santucci; Maurizio Masi;Abstract This paper is related to the previous work (Manenti et al., “Parametric Simulation and Economic Assessment of Heat Integrated Geothermal Desalination Plant”, Desalination, 317, 193–205, 2013) and extends the steady-state simulation and process layout optimization by investigating the procedure to start up multi-effect distillation (MED) desalination plants. The operations involved in the startup procedure, such as seawater supply, energy supply and vacuum generation along the process are considered together with the status of controls to prevent any possible overlapping of these relevant aspects. Segregation of the operations is demonstrated to be essential to prevent any redundancy in the oscillatory behavior of process units that can easily lead to dangerous instabilities of the plant. Moreover, whenever geothermal sources are used for sustainable production of desalinated water, it is fundamental to account for some peculiarities such as certain limitations in controllability and operability of the geothermal source. General guidelines to start up desalination processes are provided; special attention is given to geothermal-supplied plants.
