This paper describes the characteristics of synchronous machines’ damper circuit on transient condition. The authors analyze load rejection case and starting condition in point of the transient reactance saturation by finite element method (FEM) and simulation using the electromagnetic transients program (ATP-EMTP).

The field of adult education research has been and will continue to expand. In this process, one of the notable changes is that the units of research extend from individuals to collectives. Educational researches has traditionally studied an individual's learning and change as a unit of research. However, social change is difficult to account for in individual units, and most of the major changes, especially those involving social changes have been made through collective learning and changes beyond the individual level. The research fields that have grown in the area of adult education, such as organizational learning, community learning, expansive learning or team learning, started from this interest. Entrepreneurship education has been employed broadly in higher education, and one of the most popularly targeted outcomes is enhancing entrepreneurial mindset. However, the role of entrepreneurial mindset has not been examined in relation to career adaptability, which has been acknowledged as an important resource for adjustment, especially with the increased uncertainty caused by COVID-19. The current study investigated the relations among intolerance of uncertainty—specifically its sub-factors, prospective anxiety and inhibitory anxiety—career adaptability, and entrepreneurial mindset in 274 Korean college students facing school-to-work transition during COVID-19. The study conducted path analysis and evaluated the mediating effect of entrepreneurial mindset, using a 95% bootstrapping confidence interval, to better understand the role of entrepreneurial mindset in general career development in the context of uncertainty. The results found that inhibitory anxiety had an inverse association with career adaptability and entrepreneurial mindset, while prospective anxiety had a positive relation with career adaptability and entrepreneurial mindset. Entrepreneurial mindset and career adaptability showed a significantly positive relation, and the mediating role of entrepreneurial mindset between intolerance of uncertainty and career adaptability was also supported. Discussions on the role of entrepreneurial mindset are initiated and practical implications for entrepreneurship education are proposed along with the limitations of the study.

In Japan, the population of high school post graduates has been steadily declining, and also, the number of student applicants for engineering programs has been declining. ... In this paper, we describe what kinds of measures have been taken at the Power System Laboratory at Waseda University in order to attract students to power areas under the competitive environment of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Bioscience. Additionally, the importance of the course titled "Power systems engineering" as the first course is addressed in reference to the future development of deregulation of the power industry and the escalated use of renewable energy. Cooperation with power utilities and a university-industry consortium are emphasized as ways to attract good students to power areas. Finally, bilingual education in Japanese and English, and also students' presentations overseas are shown to modernize power system education.

Abstract Reducing a building’s energy consumption and providing better indoor environmental quality (IEQ) are the two major issues that building professionals are facing all over the world. It is not easy, however, to simultaneously address both issues. Therefore, this study aimed to establish the optimal occupant behavior that can simultaneously reduce total energy consumption and improve the IEQ, using an energy simulation and optimization tool. This study also developed an integrated IEQ score by combining three different IEQ indices (i.e., thermal comfort, indoor air quality (IAQ), and visual comfort) for building users to easily understand the IEQ condition. To analyze the effects of occupant behavior by region, the education facility was selected as the target facility, and five target regions were selected considering the Koppen climate classification system and the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. Finally, a total of 5 × 1.01 × 1022 occupant behavior combinations can be generated in the five target regions. As a result, among the four target variables (i.e., total energy consumption, thermal comfort, IAQ, and visual comfort), the total energy consumption of the optimal solution was found to have changed most dramatically compared to that of the basic condition in terms of percentage (94.7%), due to its strong correlation with the overall occupant behavior (the highest correlation coefficient: 0.879). Therefore, it is shown that occupant behavior has more influence on the total energy consumption than on the three IEQ indices. Among the three IEQ indices, the IAQ of the optimal solution decreased most significantly compared to that of the basic condition (the highest reduction ratio: 4.04% in Ulsan), which indicates that the IAQ has more influences on the integrated IEQ score than thermal and visual comfort. The facility manager and the building user can operate the building for reducing total energy consumption and improving the IEQ considering occupant behavior, which can be used as the building management guideline in various regions.

This paper presents an analytical method for in-plane and out-of-plane coupled vibration in thin curved panels. To treat such vibrations simply, a structure consisting of the combination of straight and curved beams is proposed and the connecting conditions of these beams are satisfied by means of artificial springs introduced at their joints. Firstly, the strain energy of the curved beam is derived based on a shell theory, and the validity is checked by comparing the modal characteristics with those obtained by beam theory. Then the straight and curved beam coupled system (SCBS) is introduced. The analytical procedure to derive the equation of motion of the SCBS is described in detail. Numerical result shows that the SCBS can successfully express the coupling effect between roof-floor relative vertical displacement and side panel’s lateral deformation. As some numerical examples, vibration responses for the different bending rigidities and loss factors in the SCBS are calculated. The influence of the loss factors in the curved beams is observed upon the vibration response of the floor section, particularly in the motion with large relative displacement between roof and floor.

Knowledge from evaluations will not be used effectively if the specific organizational context, knowledge, and relationships of evaluation agencies, and the external environment they face, are not dealt with in an integrated and coherent manner. Knowledge management can shed light on this and related initiatives can catalyze and facilitate identification, creation, storage, sharing, and use of lessons.

In early February, 48 participants from 23 countries gathered in Shonan Village, southeast of Tokyo, for a Pellston workshop to develop global guidance on principles to create, manage, and disseminate datasets through databases for the purpose of supporting life cycle assessments of globally produced products and services. Participants were organized into six topical tracks, based on responses to a series of eight stakeholder engagements held around the world over the past 18 months. The main topics for the work groups were: 1) unit process data development, 2) aggregated process data development, 3) data review and documentation, 4) adaptive LCI approaches, 5) integration and cross-fertilization, and 6) future knowledge management. The discussions, including both the consensus recommendations and the alternative views, where objectively supportable, are documented in the “Shonan Guidance Principles.” The week deepened the appreciation among the different approaches, schools and philosophies related to dataset development, modeling, reporting and review. The conclusions from controversial discussions were drawn in a spirit of inclusion rather than separation.

The world’s two largest economies, the United States and China, have fundamentally different cultural beliefs about learning. Thus, when examining Chinese learners, Western researchers were confused by the contrasting phenomenon between seemingly poor learning approaches and high academic achievement, i.e., the Paradox of Chinese Learners. In addressing this paradox, Jin Li offered a theoretical framework of the Chinese virtue model versus the European–American mind model to comprehensively understand the differences in students’ learning beliefs and academic achievement between the two cultures. However, Li does not pay attention to global cultural exchange or directly link learning beliefs to academic achievement. Therefore, this paper presents two empirical studies addressing these research gaps. Study 1 adopted both qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate the learning beliefs of Chinese and European–American university students, and revealed that deepening cultural exchange narrowed the gap between the two models (Study 1a), but the impact of the virtue model on European–American students was weaker than that of the mind model on Chinese students (Study 1b). Study 2 further revealed that both models were beneficial for Chinese students’ academic achievement, whereas only the virtue model benefited European–American students. These findings have important implications for addressing the Paradox of Chinese Learners.
