    Abstract A three dimensional numerical model of the northwest (NW) Sabalan geothermal system was developed on the basis of the designed conceptual model from available field data. A numerical model of the reservoir was expressed with a grid system of a rectangular prism of 12 km × 8 km with 4.6 km height, giving a total area of 96 km2. The model has 14 horizontal layers ranging in thickness between 100 m to 1000 m extending from a maximum of 3600 to −1000 m a.s.l. Fifteen rock types were used in the model to assign different horizontal permeabilities from 5.0 × 10−18 to 4.0 × 10−13 m2 based on the conceptual model. Natural state modeling of the reservoir was performed, and the results indicated good agreements with measured temperature and pressure in wells. Numerical simulations were conducted for predicting reservoir performances by allocating production and reinjection wells at specified locations. Three different exploitation scenarios were examined for sustainability of reservoir for the next 30 years. Effects of reinjection location and required number of makeup wells to maintain the specified fluid production were evaluated. The results showed that reinjecting at Site B, immediate adjacent to production zone, is most effective for pressure maintenance of the system. On the base of existing data and assumptions the reservoir can sustain producing fluid equivalent to 50 MWe of electricity for more than 30 years. The reservoir can produce the maximum amount of fluids equivalent to 90–100 MWe for only 5 years, but the production capacity decreases to 50 MWe after 20 years of operation because of pressure and enthalpy drop. The reservoir can sustain 50 MWe over 100 years that can be defined as a sustainable production level of the field.

    SummaryFollowing ovulation, oocytes undergo a time-dependent deterioration in quality referred to as post-ovulatory ageing. Although various factors influence the post-ovulatory ageing of oocytes, oxidative stress is a key factor involved in deterioration of oocyte quality. Artemisia asiatica Nakai ex Pamp. has been widely used in East Asia as a food ingredient and traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammation, cancer, and microbial infections. Recent studies have shown that A. asiatica exhibits antioxidative effects. In this study, we investigated whether A. asiatica has the potential to attenuate deterioration in oocyte quality during post-ovulatory ageing. Freshly ovulated mouse oocytes were cultured with 0, 50, 100 or 200 μg/ml ethanol extracts of A. asiatica Nakai ex Pamp. After culture for up to 24 h, various ageing-induced oocyte abnormalities, including morphological changes, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, apoptosis, chromosome and spindle defects, and mitochondrial aggregation were determined. Treatment of oocytes with A. asiatica extracts reduced ageing-induced morphological changes. Moreover, A. asiatica extracts decreased ROS generation and the onset of apoptosis by preventing elevation of the Bax/Bcl-2 expression ratio during post-ovulatory ageing. Furthermore, A. asiatica extracts attenuated the ageing-induced abnormalities including spindle defects, chromosome misalignment and mitochondrial aggregation. Our results demonstrate that A. asiatica can relieve deterioration in oocyte quality and delay the onset of apoptosis during post-ovulatory ageing.

    Active pharmaceutical ingredients are composed of single-component or multicomponent crystals. Multicomponent crystals include salts, co-crystals, and solvates. Indinavir sulfate is the ethanol solvate form of indinavir that is known to deliquesce through moisture absorption. However, the detailed behavior of solvent molecules in the crystal has not been investigated. In this study, we studied the desolvation mechanism of indinavir sulfate ethanol and investigated the behavior of solvent molecules in the solid from. Indinavir sulfate ethanol contained 1.7 molecules of ethanol, 0.7 of which desolvated at room temperature. They were originally two ethanol solvent molecules; one molecule of ethanol desolvated at room temperature, and the conformation of the remaining ethanol and t-butyl groups changed in conjunction with the removal of one ethanol molecule. Desolvation could hardly be detected by powder X-ray diffraction; however, it was detected using terahertz spectroscopy. Terahertz measurement of desolvation showed a high correlation with thermogravimetry data, suggesting that desolvation could be observed non-destructively using terahertz spectroscopy. We concluded that indinavir sulfate 1 ethanol deliquesced at 60% relative humidity, and it turned into an amorphous solid after drying.

    Electric field calculations have been improved in Japan. In the charge simulation method, disc charges have been introduced as fictitious charges. The method of conformal representation was also applied to the charge simulation method. The surface charge method was considered to be useful for various types of dielectrics. However, its application has been extended by simulating the surface charge density by means of Chebyshev polynomials. Curved-surface triangular and rectangular elements were also introduced in three-dimensional application of the surface charge method. The finite-element method is applied to the electric field including resistance, the ion flow field and the combination method. The electric field at a triple junction, where an electrode and two dielectrics meet at one point, has been investigated and the details of the electric field near the triple junction has been made clear.

    AbstractThe characteristics of a gas–solid fluidized bed are influenced by complicated and stochastic phenomena, e.g. jetting and the bubbling of the fluidizing medium and the motion of the fluidized particles. In this study pressure fluctuations due to the bubble movement were measured by means of a pressure probe over a range of time. The resultant time series have been analysed by determining their autocorrelation function and power spectrum with emphasis on the examination of the effect of the superficial velocity of the fluidizing gas. A stochastic model of bubble motion in a fluidized bed has been developed. This model visualizes the bubble motion in a fluidized bed to consist of the random movement, generating irregular signals, and the linear movement, generating wave‐like signals. A theoretical autocorrelation function and a power spectral density function have been derived based on the model.

    Abstract The effects of hydrogen on the combustion characteristics, thermal efficiency, and emissions of a turbo gasoline direct-injection engine with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) were investigated experimentally at brake mean effective pressures of 4, 6, and 8 bar at 2000 rpm. Four cases of hydrogen energy fraction (0%, 1%, 3% and 5%) of total fuel energy were studied. Hydrogen energy fraction of total fuel energy was hydrogen energy in the sum of energy of consumed gasoline and added hydrogen. The test results demonstrated that hydrogen addition improved the combustion speed and reduced cycle-to-cycle variation. In particular, cylinder-to-cylinder variation dramatically decreased with hydrogen addition at high EGR rates. This suggests that the operable EGR rate can be widened for a turbo gasoline direct-injection engine. The improved combustion and wider operable EGR rate resulted in enhanced thermal efficiency. However, the turbocharging effect acted in opposition to the thermal efficiency with respect to the EGR rate. Therefore, a different strategy to improve the thermal efficiency with EGR was required for the turbo gasoline direct-injection engine. HC and CO2 emissions were reduced but NOX emissions increased with hydrogen addition. The CO emissions as a function of engine load followed different trends that depended on the level of hydrogen addition.

    Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) can contribute reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fuel. With the increasing SAFs demand, various generations of resources have been shifted from the 1st generation (oil crops), the 2nd generation (agricultural waste), to the 3rd generation (microalgae). Microalgae are the most suitable feedstock for jet biofuel production than other resources because of their productivity and capability to capture carbon dioxide. However, microalgae-based biofuel has a limitation of high freezing point. Recently, a jet biofuel derived from Euglena wax ester has been paying attention due to its low freezing point. Challenges still remain to enhance production yields in both upstream and downstream processes. Studies on downstream processes as well as techno-economic analysis on biofuel production using Euglena are highly limited to date. Economic aspects for the biofuel production will be ensured via valorization of industrial byproducts such as food wastes.

    Abstract This paper is concerned with the neutronics analysis of extremely simplified recycling technologies of spent fuels in a small breed-and-burn fast reactor (B&BR). The discharged fuels of the first generation B&BR, which achieved an average burnup of 160 GWd/MTHM, were used to construct a second generation B&BR core. Two types of high proliferation resistant recycling technologies, melt refining and the newly suggested super-simplified melt and treatment, were applied to process and treat the discharged fuels. Because the burnup profile of discharged fuels varies largely depending on its position in the core, the recycling of the discharged fuels was also carried out by grouping them into recycling regions including 1, 3, and 6 recycling regions. In this study, the core performance of the 2nd generation B&BR loaded with the recycled fuel, which was produced by different recycling technologies and recycling regions, was analyzed and compared. An optimum fuel loading scheme was also adopted to maximize the performance of the 2nd generation B&BR in terms of the burnup reactivity change, core lifetime, and power profiles.

    Authors: Teruya Kouno;
