    Authors: Laudati, Giuseppe;

    Le utilizzazioni forestali sono uno degli aspetti fondamentali della gestione forestale sostenibile, in quanto strumento di applicazione indispensabile mediante il lavoro in bosco delle imprese forestali. Il primo anello della filiera bosco-legno è costituito da queste imprese di prima trasformazione che vengono scarsamente monitorate a differenza di altri settori produttivi del Paese. Le fonti statistiche ufficiali, infatti, concentrano la loro attenzione solo su altri aspetti della gestione forestale e non sulle attività in bosco dei cantieri forestali. L’obiettivo dello studio, per ogni impresa, è stato quello di monitorare il livello di meccanizzazione forestale usato ed in particolare le metodologie di lavoro applicate, in quanto, esse vanno ad influenzare direttamente e indirettamente sulla crescita e sulla sostenibilità dei boschi. Il lavoro è stato svolto in tre Regioni, Umbria, Lazio e Campania, attraverso un campione di imprese forestali, per conoscere sia la loro organizzazione imprenditoriale che il loro reale lavoro in bosco. L’indagine ha evidenziato fondamentalmente, la perdurante mancanza di accurati controlli e opportuni monitoraggi, da parte di tutti gli Enti competenti. Questa persistente lacuna dovrebbe essere colmata, anche alla luce degli accordi stipulati dall’Italia sia in sede comunitaria che internazionale, in modo da poter applicare concretamente e meglio una gestione sostenibile delle foreste italiane. Una migliore conoscenza di questo anello debole della filiera, porterebbe anche dei notevoli miglioramenti sulla sicurezza degli operatori forestali impiegati in bosco e a un migliore utilizzo della biomassa prelevata. Il monitoraggio dei cantieri forestali consentirebbe, infine, la realizzazione di interventi selviculturali meno impattanti di quelli attuali per i boschi e l’ambiente, nonché una programmazione che si ripercuoterebbe sull’applicazione di livelli di meccanizzazione al passo con l’innovazione tecnologica, già applicata da tempo in altri Paesi. Forest harvesting is one of the crucial aspects in the sustainable forest management, since it is a necessary application tool for the forest firms, through their work in the forest. The first ring of the forest-wood supply chain is based on the first transformation firms which, differently from other productive sectors of the Country, are scarcely surveyed. In fact the official statistical sources concentrated their attention only on other aspects of the forest management, but not on the activities of the forest yards. The research target was to monitor level of mechanization of forest enterprises and, particularly, the applied work methodologies, since directly and indirectly affecting forests growth and sustainability. The study was carried out in three provinces, Umbria, Lazio, Campania, through a sample of forest enterprises, to better analyse both the management organization and their real work activities in the forest. The investigation has essentially shown the lasting lack of accurate inspections and appropriate monitoring by all the competent organizations. This persistent gap should be filled up, according to the agreements stipulated by Italy both in the European Commission and Internationally, in order to concretely and better apply a sustainable management in Italian forests. An enhanced knowledge of this bond in the supply chain should bring remarkable improvements of forest workers safety and a better use of harvestable biomass. Finally the forest yards monitoring should permit to achieve silvicultural actions for environment and forest sustainability, and the possibility to schedule an increase of mechanization and technological innovations, as already common in other Countries.     Authors: Carli, Filippo Maria;

    In accordo con le normative europee, sia in tema ambientale che di sviluppo, le coste dei mari continentali sono viste come uno dei motori della ripresa economica e, al tempo stesso, come elemento chiave nel raggiungimento degli obiettivi di protezione ambientale. Le risorse naturali costiere hanno alle spalle una lunga storia di sfruttamento da parte dell'uomo e nuovi usi si stanno imponendo rapidamente, come le energie rinnovabili o le biotecnologie marine, generando forte competizione per l'utilizzo degli spazi costieri disponibili. In questo contesto è quindi fondamentale l'utilizzo di approcci che permettano un uso sostenibile e lungimirante degli spazi costieri e che implementino strumenti di gestione innovativi. Il presente lavoro nasce da questa esigenza e si propone di mettere a punto una Carta di Uso del Mare come strumento a supporto della gestione sostenibile degli spazi e delle risorse costiere. Lo scopo con cui la Carta viene redatta è quello di unire le informazioni sugli ecosistemi marini costieri presenti alle informazioni sulle attività socioeconomiche, in modo da supportare la gestione degli spazi e l'implementazione delle relative misure. La biocenosi bentonica è stata selezionata come unità spaziale di riferimento nella costruzione della Carta, per la sua capacità di descrivere, meglio di ogni altro elemento ecologico, le specifiche condizioni ambientali di un'area marina costiera e le loro variazioni nel tempo. Una volta costruita la Carta, per migliorare l'efficacia dello strumento, la distribuzione spaziale delle biocenosi è stata sostituita dalla capacità delle biocenosi stesse di fornire benefici per l'uomo, ovvero dai loro servizi ecosistemici. Questa informazione risulta molto più efficace, rispetto all'informazione ecologica pura, nell'influenzare le amministrazioni pubbliche verso una gestione sostenibile della costa. Come descritto in una parte recente della letteratura sull'Economia Ecologica, in considerazione della difficoltà oggettiva di produrre una valutazione economica coerente degli ecosistemi, si sta affermando con grande forza l'utilizzo della mappatura esplicita dei servizi ecosistemici (benefit ecosistemici in questo lavoro). Tale mappatura fornisce, infatti, un quadro estremamente chiaro dei vantaggi di una gestione razionale degli spazi, mostrando quali benefit per l'uomo vengono ridotti o incrementati in base alla destinazione d'uso degli spazi marittimi. Nella parte finale del lavoro, lo strumento descritto viene utilizzato per guidare l'integrazione di un nuovo uso nel sistema costiero di Civitavecchia (Roma). Il nuovo uso considerato è costituito dai convertitori di energia del moto ondoso, per i quali viene valutato il potenziale sfruttabile e viene individuato, attraverso la Carta, il miglior sito per un'installazione sperimentale all'interno dell'area di studio. According to the European directives, both in the field of environment and development, the shores of the continent are seen as one of the driver of the economic recovery and, at the same time, as a key element in achieving the EU environmental goals. Coastal natural resources have a long history of human exploitation and more uses are quickly rising, such as marine renewable energy and blue biotechnologies, thus generating competition for the use of available coastal spaces. The implementation of approaches allowing a sustainable and forward-looking management is this necessary. This work takes the steps from this need and aims to develop a Sea Use Map as a powerful tool supporting the sustainable use of coastal spaces and resources. The goal of the map is to gather ecological and socio-economic information to support the management and the implementation of necessary measures. The benthic biocenosis was selected as the relevant spatial unit in the building process of the map, because of its ability to describe, better than any other ecological item, the specific environmental condition of the selected area and their temporal variations. Once the map is drawn, its efficacy is enhanced by substituting the spatial information on the benthic biocenosis with their ability to provide benefits to human well-being, or their ecosystem services. When compared to pure ecological information, ecosystem services proved to be more effective in influencing public administration and stakeholders toward a sustainable coastal management. As described in a part of the recent literature on Ecological Economics, considering the objective hurdles in the production of a coherent evaluation of an ecosystem's economic value, the spatially explicit mapping of the ecosystem services (ecosystem benefit in this work) is rapidly arising as a powerful tool. Spatially explicit mapping of ecosystem services provide a very clear picture of the advantages of a rational spaces management by showing if benefits to human well-being are increasing or decreasing with the change in the the use of a marine area. In the final part of the work, the Sea Use Map is used to drive the integration of a new seauser in the coastal system of Civitavecchia (Rome). The new users are wave energy converters, for which, through the Sea Use Map, the available potential is computed and the most suitable sites for an experimental deployment are identified. After analyzing the characteristics of climate change-related migration and highlighting the lack of protection for environmental migrants in international law, the article addresses the similar gap in the Common European Asylum System. This shortcoming is not remedied by the current proposals to amend the existing legislation contained in the Pact on Migration and Asylum, as the Pact does not provide specific protection for environmental migrants. Therefore, at the moment, only the set of international human rights standards has to be resorted to in order to ensure protection for environmental migrants, as shown by the recent monitoring activity carried out by the Human Rights Committee and the recent orientation of the Italian Court of Cassation.

    Questo Dizionario tratta la questione ambientale intesa nella sua accezione più ampia. In esso sono infatti esposti e discussi contenuti e categorie dell'ecologia, della scienza cioè che si occupa delle interdipendenze dinamiche che caratterizzano i rapporti nella biosfera tra le forme viventi e l'ambiente fisico che le ospita. Contestualmente, il Dizionario tratta del ruolo peculiare che nell'ecosistema terrestre ricopre la specie umana, con la propria capacità di influire pesantemente sull'evoluzione dell'ambiente naturale, basti pensare tra l'altro alla crescente produzione di rifiuti.

    Authors: CHIAZZESE, MURJAL;

    The effect of greenhouse gases (GHG) on climate change led many experts to consider the reduction of GHGs emissions as a crucial strategy to tackle the predicted global warming. In particular, atmospheric warming is caused mainly by carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). It is widely accepted that the main anthropogenic source of GHG (except CO2) is due to agriculture activities. The purpose of this study was to help define concepts and tools to facilitate agricultural sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In particular we based our focus on measuring systems for CO2 emissions, testing the performance of novel system (SASSFlux) and its features in different condition with two widely used instruments (Bruel&Kjaer and gas chromatography). Moreover we testing two process-based models, DNDC and SPACSYS, evaluating their performance and the agreement between simulated and measured data on a experiment carried out on lysimeters. At the end we applied all the knowledge acquired on a field experiment evaluating CO2 and N2O emissions from different organic and mineral fertilizers and tillage. The complete thesis aims to provide a comprehensive view of the different aspects to be addressed in the assessment of GHG emissions from different scenarios of agricultural management. L'effetto dei gas serra sul cambiamento climatico ha portato molti esperti a considerare la riduzione delle emissioni di gas serra come strategia per il riscaldamento globale. In particolare tale fenomeno è causato dall’anidride carbonica (CO2), metano (CH4) e il protossido di azoto (N2O). E 'ampiamente accettato che la principale fonte antropica di gas a effetto serra (tranne CO2) è dovuta alle attività agricole. Lo scopo di questo studio è quello di definire concetti e strumenti per facilitare il settore agricolo a ridurre le emissioni di gas serra. In particolare, abbiamo posto la nostra attenzione ai sistemi di misurazione delle emissioni dal suolo, testando un nuovo sistema (SASSFlux) e le sue caratteristiche a confronto con due strumenti ampiamente utilizzati (Bruel & Kjaer e gascromatografia). Inoltre abbiamo testato due modelli di simulazione (DNDC e SPACSYS) valutando i dati simulati e quelli misurati su un esperimento effettuato su lisimetri. In fine abbiamo applicato le conoscenze acquisite in pieno campo per la valutazione delle emissioni di CO2 e N2O con diversi concimi e lavorazione del terreno. La tesi si propone di fornire una visione completa dei diversi aspetti da affrontare nella valutazione delle emissioni di gas serra provenienti da diversi scenari di gestione agricola.

    La ricerca si inserisce nel dibattito sulla sostenibilità dei sistemi agroalimentari e sulle politiche in grado di supportarli in un’ottica di sviluppo locale. Il lavoro si pone un duplice obiettivo. Da un lato, la costruzione di un modello per la valutazione del livello di sostenibilità delle filiere agroalimentari, fondato teoricamente e applicabile empiricamente. Dall’altro, la proposizione di uno strumento in grado di guidare la definizione delle politiche utilizzando come metro di giudizio il livello di sostenibilità. Per fare ciò, ci si è dapprima concentrati sulla concettualizzazione della sostenibilità delle filiere nelle sue tre dimensioni – ambiente, società ed economia. Una volta affrontata la scelta del sistema territoriale all’interno del quale inscrivere l’analisi, si è quindi strutturato un modello gerarchico che, partendo dai concetti oggetto di misura, conduce all’individuazione delle dimensioni, delle variabili e degli indicatori da valutare. Di questo modello la tesi propone una prima applicazione empirica che, tramite il calcolo di indici, aggregati poi in coefficienti di sostenibilità, mira a confrontare tre diverse forme di filiera all’interno della provincia di Viterbo: la grande distribuzione, la vendita al dettaglio e la filiera corta. I risultati ottenuti funzionano da input per un modello di programmazione matematica, volto a individuare la combinazione di filiere che massimizza il livello di sostenibilità globale del sistema agroalimentare locale. Il risultato, sintetizzato nella cosiddetta “carta delle politiche”, è uno strumento in grado di guidare la scelta del decisore locale fra le alternative individuate dal modello, potenzialmente utilizzabile come supporto per l’impostazione delle strategie locali in materia. This Phd thesis is about food systems’ sustainability and the policies to support them in a local development perspective. The objective is twofold. On the one hand, the aim is to build up a model for the assessment of food chains sustainability, which is based on the theory and empirically applicable. On the other hand, we want to develop a tool for the definition of policies in food matters based on the level of sustainability of food chains. To do that, the first part of the research focuses on the conceptualization of the three dimensions of food supply chain sustainability - environment, society and economy. Then, the choice of the territorial system in which the analysis should be inscribed is discussed. On these basis, we build up a hierarchical model that, starting from the concepts, leads to the identification of dimensions, variables and sustainability indicators to be assessed. The research proposes a first empirical application of this model. Indicators are calculated and aggregated into coefficients that measure the sustainability level of three different types of food chains within the province of Viterbo: large scale retail, small stores and the short chain. These results are used as an input to a mathematical programming model, in order to identify the combination of food chains which is able to maximize the overall level of sustainability of the local food system. The outputs are summarized in a visual representation with the aim to give local decision-makers a easier tool for selecting the better solution among the alternatives offered by the model. This tool might be very useful to support the setting of local strategies in food chain matters. Dottorato di ricerca in Economia e territorio

    In recent years, several aircraft companies launched awareness campaigns, offering to their passenger the opportunity to known and also calculate their own per-capita CO2 emissions related to the flight they are going to make. Such campaigns permits to the passenger to pay a volunteer contribution in order to compensate their CO2 emissions. In this short communication, some programs undertaken by airline companies are showed. These initiatives are all characterized by a common denominator: the achievement of concrete, proved and verifiable results to compensate the aircraft CO2 emissions. Moreover, also a concrete case is reported as example: it is useful to show which is the per capita CO2 emission for a sample flight in Europe and, quantitatively, the amount of compensation measurements. Finally, this communication highlights on how the estimates of such measurements are usually miscalculated, considering that the capability of forest ecosystems to store CO2 are often underestimated.

    Authors: Eldar Piazza;

    L'Energy Harvesting (EH) è un settore della ricerca che studia i modi più efficienti per impiegare l'energia presente nell'ambiente e proveniente da diverse sorgenti in modo da poter alimentare dispositivi di diversa natura liberandoli dalla necessità di essere allacciati ad una rete di distribuzione elettrica o di utilizzare delle batterie. Lo scopo di questo lavoro di tesi è stato lo studio dei sistemi di EH a radiofrequenza ed il progetto e realizzazione di una tipologia circuitale tra quelle possibili per recuperare, convertire ed accumulare in maniera efficiente l'energia associata ad una frequenza in particolare. La caratteristica peculiare dei convertitori di potenza usati per questi sistemi consiste nel poter lavorare con tensioni di ingresso molto basse, anche dell'ordine delle decine di mV. Nel presente lavoro è dunque offerta inizialmente un'ampia panoramica sui trasduttori ed i circuiti di potenza impiegati nell'Energy Harvesting a radiofrequenza. In particolare, dopo una introduzione sulle sorgenti di energia per harvesting, nel primo capitolo della tesi viene effettuata una rassegna delle principali antenne utili per il recupero dell'energia dalle onde radio e dei rettificatori necessari per trasformare il segnale RF in un segnale DC, che sarà l'ingresso del convertitore di potenza. Nel secondo capitolo sono invece analizzati i circuiti di power management, ossia i convertitori elevatori necessari per innalzare i valori di tensione recuperati ed i relativi sistemi di accumulo (supercondensatori). Il terzo capitolo della tesi riguarda il progetto di dispositivi per l'Energy Harvesting a radiofrequenza a partire da misure sperimentali condotte presso l'Università degli Studi di Palermo, utilizzando opportuni circuiti convertitori integrati. Il quarto ed ultimo capitolo riguarda invece la realizzazione di un prototipo di sistema per l'Energy Harvesting a radiofrequenza, effettuata presso l'istituto "ISSIA-CNR" di Palermo, sulla base dei dispositivi progettati. Infine, sono state tratte le conclusioni di questo lavoro di tesi.
