We analyse the viability of these projects, by investigating the concrete opportunities for community-based Virtual Power Plant projects in two countries (the Netherlands and Ireland) and how these are shaped by incumbent institutional arrangements at EU, national and local levels. The analysis is structured using the constitutive elements of a business model can-vas as a heuristic. The results show that in order to survive in the energy services market (which is necessary for economic viability on the longer term) community energy initia-tives are forced to partially abandon their community logic-based business model. We discuss how current institutional arrangements are not conducive to a more inclusive en-ergy system and how this could be improved.

Analytical techniques, Monte Carlo (MC) methods and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation methods have been used to characterize the influence of the characteristic parameters such as number density, reduced density, length of the system and molecular diameter on the equilibrium properties of the gas near the hard walls of the microchannel. The height and the position of the density oscillation peaks near the wall are characterized. Comparisons between MD and MC results for particles having different diameter are presented. For the same size of the particles and moderately dense gas, MC and MD results are similar, differences in the density profiles being limited only to the oscillatory region. For different particle sizes, MD and MC results are limited to a short distance near the wall for long size systems and moderately dense fluids. The effect of the boundary (particle size) on the simulation results is increasing with η (reduced density) and it is very small in case of a dilute gas. For small η and small particle size (R) relative to length of the system L, the height of the oscillations peaks is slowly increasing with R/L, and for high densities is always decreasing with R/L. The position of these peaks depends only on the size of the particles and when R is much smaller than L, it shows a small dependence on L.

After introducing the concept of elasticity (compressibility) of this powder structure, the observed phenomena can be explained by means of a perturbation theory which leads to a new dimensionless number NF predicting the limits to where homogeneous fluidization is possible.

The addition of bromine complexing agent (BCA) to bromine electrolyte is an accepted method to reduce bromine vapor pressure making bromine-based flow batteries inherently safer. It is well-known that the amine functional group of the BCAs interact with Nafion membranes. The novelty of the current work is that it investigates how this interaction of BCA with the four different membrane chemistries impacts the membrane characteristics and performance of hydrogen bromine flow batteries (HBFBs). The impact of BCA 13 on the system performance is determined by the membrane chemistry. Exposure of Nafion membranes to BCA leads to 60% higher cell resistance, and 55% lower cell power density at 0.5 V at 50% state-of-charge (SOC). This decrease is caused by the strong interaction between the negatively charged sulfonic acid groups in the membrane and the positively charged BCA. Lower SOC, lower bromine concentration and a higher free BCA concentration is detrimental in the cell operation. The use of LC PFSA membranes in the presence of BCA ions should be avoided. while BCA in combination with grafted sulfonated polyvinylidene fluoride (SPVDF) or grafted sulfonated polyethylene (SPE) membranes promising HBFB results are obtained.

BACKGROUND: The extraction of butane-1,4-diamine (BDA) from aqueous solutions with undiluted 4-nonylphenol (4NP) has been studied at three temperatures (298 K, 310 K and 323 K) in a batch system. A reactive extraction model based on mass action law was applied to describe the experimental data. RESULTS: The model developed describes the distribution of BDA between the 4NP phase and the aqueous phase, and the average stoichiometry of the complexation due to interactions between the two amine groups of BDA and 4NP, as well as the complexation constant were fitted to experimental data with good accuracy for each of the three temperatures, the largest error at the confidence limit of the estimated parameters being 6%. Using a Van't Hoff plot, the thermodynamic parameters of the equilibrium constant were determined and used to estimate that in a single stage with only S/F = 0.5, over 99% of the BDA can be extracted from a 1.146 wt% aqueous solution. High distribution ratios at low BDA concentrations hampered the effective recovery by back-extraction in a single stage, therefore multistage processing was considered and short-cut calculations revealed a maximum concentration factor of 3.6. CONCLUSION: Good agreement between single stage equilibrium data and the model was obtained and the model developed was used in short-cut calculation of a coupled multistage forward and back-extraction process showing a maximum concentration factor of only 3.6, therefore an alternative, more effective recovery strategy, e.g. through anti-solvent addition is suggested.

To study the effects experimentally, a 150 kV system was made available. On a high voltage tower carrying a cellular phone base station, one phase insulator was shorted to the tower. A current of about 200 A was injected into that phase at a large distance. The authors measured the current distribution and the relevant voltages in the low voltage network. A experimental data agree with EMTP calculations. Appropriate measures to guarantee safety for persons and electronic equipment are discussed

The energy requalification of existing buildings entails the fulfillment of different, often conflicting, criteria, such as the reduction of the specific annual energy demand, the containment of the construction costs, the decrease in the annual energy operating cost and the reduction of climate-change gas emissions. Therefore, optimization methods based on the application of computational algorithms are essential to determine solutions that meet multi-objective criteria and so highly optimized to be on the Pareto frontier. In this work, a procedure for the optimization of existing buildings using genetic algorithms is presented. Building energy simulations conducted in the dynamic regime using EnergyPlus are coupled with an Active Archive Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (aNSGA-II type). Using a residential building as a benchmark, this procedure is employed to evaluate the best retrofitting interventions for 19 European cities with different climates. The criteria taken into account in the optimization procedure are: the reduction in the annual specific energy demand, the decrease in the construction and installation costs, the reduction in the annual energy operating costs and the reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions. The results show the most advantageous energy retrofitting interventions fulfilling the criteria for the different geographical sites.

The homozygous fa/fa ZDF rats are obese and diabetic. The heterozygous fa/+ ZDF rats are lean and healthy. Diabetic Zucker Diabetic Fatty rats were treated with either pioglitazone (30 mg/kg/day) or water as a control (n = 6 per group), for 2 weeks. In vivo 1H and 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy was performed on skeletal muscle to assess intramyocellular lipid (IMCL) content and muscle oxidative capacity, respectively. Ex vivo muscle mitochondrial respiratory capacity was evaluated using high‐resolution respirometry. In addition, several markers of mitochondrial content were determined.ResultsIMCL content was 14‐fold higher and in vivo muscle oxidative capacity was 26% lower in diabetic rats compared with lean rats, which was, however, not caused by impairments of ex vivo mitochondrial respiratory capacity or a lower mitochondrial content. Pioglitazone treatment restored in vivo muscle oxidative capacity in diabetic rats to the level of lean controls. This amelioration was not accompanied by an increase in mitochondrial content or ex vivo mitochondrial respiratory capacity, but rather was paralleled by an improvement in lipid homeostasis, that is lowering of plasma triglycerides and muscle lipid and long‐chain acylcarnitine content.ConclusionDiminished in vivo muscle oxidative capacity in diabetic rats results from mitochondrial lipid overload and can be alleviated by redirecting the lipids from the muscle into adipose tissue using pioglitazone treatment.

The aerodynamic and wake recovery dynamics of floating offshore wind turbines differ from fixed turbines due to the platform motions. Understanding tandem rotor interactions is essential for both turbines as well as wind farm design. This paper investigates the wake interactions in offshore wind farms by studying the effect of the upstream turbine motion on the downstream wind turbine loads and performance. A previously developed and validated Navier-Stokes actuator line model is used and implemented in the OpenFOAM® solver. The NREL 5 MW turbine is selected as a reference, and the upstream turbine is prescribed both surging and pitching motions (of different amplitude) while the downstream turbine is maintained fixed. Results for the turbine loading, wake and flow development are presented. It was found that the peak-to-peak thrust and power variations depend on modelling the discrete nature of the blades. Although the discrete tip vortices in fixed conditions diffuse within the first two diameters, downstream of the rotor, the platform motion can transform them into a new wake topology form with discrete ring shapes. The frequency spectra of the parameters showed a significant impact from these motion-induced discrete rings. The results indicate the need for higher fidelity modelling approaches when studying floating wind turbine interactions.

We analyse the viability of these projects, by investigating the concrete opportunities for community-based Virtual Power Plant projects in two countries (the Netherlands and Ireland) and how these are shaped by incumbent institutional arrangements at EU, national and local levels. The analysis is structured using the constitutive elements of a business model can-vas as a heuristic. The results show that in order to survive in the energy services market (which is necessary for economic viability on the longer term) community energy initia-tives are forced to partially abandon their community logic-based business model. We discuss how current institutional arrangements are not conducive to a more inclusive en-ergy system and how this could be improved.

Analytical techniques, Monte Carlo (MC) methods and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation methods have been used to characterize the influence of the characteristic parameters such as number density, reduced density, length of the system and molecular diameter on the equilibrium properties of the gas near the hard walls of the microchannel. The height and the position of the density oscillation peaks near the wall are characterized. Comparisons between MD and MC results for particles having different diameter are presented. For the same size of the particles and moderately dense gas, MC and MD results are similar, differences in the density profiles being limited only to the oscillatory region. For different particle sizes, MD and MC results are limited to a short distance near the wall for long size systems and moderately dense fluids. The effect of the boundary (particle size) on the simulation results is increasing with η (reduced density) and it is very small in case of a dilute gas. For small η and small particle size (R) relative to length of the system L, the height of the oscillations peaks is slowly increasing with R/L, and for high densities is always decreasing with R/L. The position of these peaks depends only on the size of the particles and when R is much smaller than L, it shows a small dependence on L.

The addition of bromine complexing agent (BCA) to bromine electrolyte is an accepted method to reduce bromine vapor pressure making bromine-based flow batteries inherently safer. It is well-known that the amine functional group of the BCAs interact with Nafion membranes. The novelty of the current work is that it investigates how this interaction of BCA with the four different membrane chemistries impacts the membrane characteristics and performance of hydrogen bromine flow batteries (HBFBs). The impact of BCA 13 on the system performance is determined by the membrane chemistry. Exposure of Nafion membranes to BCA leads to 60% higher cell resistance, and 55% lower cell power density at 0.5 V at 50% state-of-charge (SOC). This decrease is caused by the strong interaction between the negatively charged sulfonic acid groups in the membrane and the positively charged BCA. Lower SOC, lower bromine concentration and a higher free BCA concentration is detrimental in the cell operation. The use of LC PFSA membranes in the presence of BCA ions should be avoided. while BCA in combination with grafted sulfonated polyvinylidene fluoride (SPVDF) or grafted sulfonated polyethylene (SPE) membranes promising HBFB results are obtained.

BACKGROUND: The extraction of butane-1,4-diamine (BDA) from aqueous solutions with undiluted 4-nonylphenol (4NP) has been studied at three temperatures (298 K, 310 K and 323 K) in a batch system. A reactive extraction model based on mass action law was applied to describe the experimental data. RESULTS: The model developed describes the distribution of BDA between the 4NP phase and the aqueous phase, and the average stoichiometry of the complexation due to interactions between the two amine groups of BDA and 4NP, as well as the complexation constant were fitted to experimental data with good accuracy for each of the three temperatures, the largest error at the confidence limit of the estimated parameters being 6%. Using a Van't Hoff plot, the thermodynamic parameters of the equilibrium constant were determined and used to estimate that in a single stage with only S/F = 0.5, over 99% of the BDA can be extracted from a 1.146 wt% aqueous solution. High distribution ratios at low BDA concentrations hampered the effective recovery by back-extraction in a single stage, therefore multistage processing was considered and short-cut calculations revealed a maximum concentration factor of 3.6. CONCLUSION: Good agreement between single stage equilibrium data and the model was obtained and the model developed was used in short-cut calculation of a coupled multistage forward and back-extraction process showing a maximum concentration factor of only 3.6, therefore an alternative, more effective recovery strategy, e.g. through anti-solvent addition is suggested.

To study the effects experimentally, a 150 kV system was made available. On a high voltage tower carrying a cellular phone base station, one phase insulator was shorted to the tower. A current of about 200 A was injected into that phase at a large distance. The authors measured the current distribution and the relevant voltages in the low voltage network. A experimental data agree with EMTP calculations. Appropriate measures to guarantee safety for persons and electronic equipment are discussed

The energy requalification of existing buildings entails the fulfillment of different, often conflicting, criteria, such as the reduction of the specific annual energy demand, the containment of the construction costs, the decrease in the annual energy operating cost and the reduction of climate-change gas emissions. Therefore, optimization methods based on the application of computational algorithms are essential to determine solutions that meet multi-objective criteria and so highly optimized to be on the Pareto frontier. In this work, a procedure for the optimization of existing buildings using genetic algorithms is presented. Building energy simulations conducted in the dynamic regime using EnergyPlus are coupled with an Active Archive Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (aNSGA-II type). Using a residential building as a benchmark, this procedure is employed to evaluate the best retrofitting interventions for 19 European cities with different climates. The criteria taken into account in the optimization procedure are: the reduction in the annual specific energy demand, the decrease in the construction and installation costs, the reduction in the annual energy operating costs and the reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions. The results show the most advantageous energy retrofitting interventions fulfilling the criteria for the different geographical sites.

The homozygous fa/fa ZDF rats are obese and diabetic. The heterozygous fa/+ ZDF rats are lean and healthy. Diabetic Zucker Diabetic Fatty rats were treated with either pioglitazone (30 mg/kg/day) or water as a control (n = 6 per group), for 2 weeks. In vivo 1H and 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy was performed on skeletal muscle to assess intramyocellular lipid (IMCL) content and muscle oxidative capacity, respectively. Ex vivo muscle mitochondrial respiratory capacity was evaluated using high‐resolution respirometry. In addition, several markers of mitochondrial content were determined.ResultsIMCL content was 14‐fold higher and in vivo muscle oxidative capacity was 26% lower in diabetic rats compared with lean rats, which was, however, not caused by impairments of ex vivo mitochondrial respiratory capacity or a lower mitochondrial content. Pioglitazone treatment restored in vivo muscle oxidative capacity in diabetic rats to the level of lean controls. This amelioration was not accompanied by an increase in mitochondrial content or ex vivo mitochondrial respiratory capacity, but rather was paralleled by an improvement in lipid homeostasis, that is lowering of plasma triglycerides and muscle lipid and long‐chain acylcarnitine content.ConclusionDiminished in vivo muscle oxidative capacity in diabetic rats results from mitochondrial lipid overload and can be alleviated by redirecting the lipids from the muscle into adipose tissue using pioglitazone treatment.

The aerodynamic and wake recovery dynamics of floating offshore wind turbines differ from fixed turbines due to the platform motions. Understanding tandem rotor interactions is essential for both turbines as well as wind farm design. This paper investigates the wake interactions in offshore wind farms by studying the effect of the upstream turbine motion on the downstream wind turbine loads and performance. A previously developed and validated Navier-Stokes actuator line model is used and implemented in the OpenFOAM® solver. The NREL 5 MW turbine is selected as a reference, and the upstream turbine is prescribed both surging and pitching motions (of different amplitude) while the downstream turbine is maintained fixed. Results for the turbine loading, wake and flow development are presented. It was found that the peak-to-peak thrust and power variations depend on modelling the discrete nature of the blades. Although the discrete tip vortices in fixed conditions diffuse within the first two diameters, downstream of the rotor, the platform motion can transform them into a new wake topology form with discrete ring shapes. The frequency spectra of the parameters showed a significant impact from these motion-induced discrete rings. The results indicate the need for higher fidelity modelling approaches when studying floating wind turbine interactions.
