    The conversion of chemical energy contained in organic matter into electricity has become an object of interest for many scientists worldwide. This technology is used in microbial fuel cells (MFC). Apart from generating electrical energy, these cells can be used simultaneously for wastewater treatment. Although the technology is constantly being improved, currently functioning microbial fuel cells cannot provide appropriate output parameters to use on an industrial scale. One of the barriers is so-called extracellular electron transfer, which in turn depends on the electrode type used, its material, shape, and size. According to current literature, carbon, graphite, stainless steel, and ceramics are the most frequently used electrode materials. However, more and more often, scientists are turning to other, unusual materials, the production of which uses the newest technologies, and one of them is graphene. This material is modified in different ways and connected with other materials, and the results of this seem to be very promising. Scientists manage to get a higher level of extracellular electron transfer and, hence, higher output parameters of the whole system. This article describes chosen technologies and attempts made by scientists worldwide to use graphene in MFC and their results.

    The 2030 zero-net emission target in the E.U. demands a significant improvement in the energy performance of the building stock. This study analyses the adoption of connected thermostats and Home energy-management system solutions (HEMS) as an effective means to tackle the residential energy footprint. It reviews the main features of HEMS systems in terms of technology, cross-study performances, and the obstacles to widespread adoption; the study adopts the case-study methodology to examine the impact on the Italian real estate stock at a regional level. A matrix of adoption scenarios assesses the potential benefits of global residential energy savings, weighted by local climatic variations, dimension, number of single dwellings, and average primary energy reduction per household. Results demonstrate that all adoption scenarios dramatically reduce residential energy consumption, outperforming the E.U. targets for Italy by 2030.

    This paper aims to reconsider prosumers’ role in the power markets in the early stages of their decentralization, accounting for rising self-supply trends, security threats, and economic and regulatory barriers. The development of prosumerism envisages finding the ratio between retail market sales under the feed-in tariff and the net billing mechanism. Within the methodology section, the indicator of prosumer efficiency for electricity generation (EUR/kWh) is proposed based on average consumption/production ratios and consumption/delivery incentives. To support household prosumers, the mentioned incentives on the renewable energy market consider the self-supply cost of electricity, the levelized cost of electricity for small-scale green energy facilities (solar photovoltaic and wind), and transaction costs. This paper evaluates prosumer efficiency under three consumption/production ratio scenarios for Ukrainian households (self-consumption of 40%, 20%, and 100% of green electricity annually generated by a household and selling the leftovers via the feed-in tariff) for 2023. The gradual movement from fixed tariffs for households toward market-based prices promotes the emergence of new related market players and their consolidation in the market. Participation in the organized power market segments is relevant for day-ahead market prices above 130 EUR/MWh, disregarding the households’ tariff rate. The low price caps inhibit the prosumer’s participation in the market, while the transition from the feed-in tariff to net billing significantly promotes their development only under high price caps.

    The main aim of this work is to propose a new algorithm of reliability assessment for steel civil engineering structures subjected to fire temperatures. This new algorithm is based upon the relative probabilistic entropy concept elaborated by Bhattacharyya, and this probabilistic distance is sought in-between extreme and admissible deformations of some structural beam subjected to higher temperatures. Similar to the First Order Reliability Method, this approach uses the first two probabilistic characteristics of the structural response, when structural output may be modelled with the use of Gaussian distribution. The probabilistic structural response is found here using hybrid computational technique–the Finite Element Method system ABAQUS with its fully coupled thermo-elastic analysis with 3D solid elements and probabilistic modules implemented in the computer algebra system MAPLE. The probabilistic response is determined via a triple stochastic analysis, which is based on the classical Monte-Carlo simulation, iterative generalized stochastic perturbation technique, and also using semi-analytical probabilistic calculus. Final determination of the relative entropy in the Serviceability Limit State of the given structure and its comparison with the results obtained using the FORM analysis enables to calibrate this new technique to numerical values proposed in the engineering designing codes. Hence, a more accurate probabilistic method may use some experimental-based admissible values included in the existing design of legal provisions.

    Undoubtedly, the transition to electromobility with several million new, efficient charging points will have consequences for the energy industry, and in particular for network operators of the distribution infrastructure. At the same time, in the coming years the energy landscape will change into a system in which an increase in decentralized systems based on renewable energy sources will take over the leading function. This transformation process will further increase the complexity and overall pressure for change in energy systems over the next decade. In order to be able to ensure the energy supply and the reliable system operation of the grids in the future as well, communicative networking of generators, storage systems, electrical consumers and grid equipment is indispensable. This study aims to investigate the consequences of including electric vehicles in Istanbul’s power system using a unit commitment simulation model. The presented considerations analyze how uncertain and managed charging strategies affect the power system in terms of operating costs and renewable resources. The presented simulations indicate that, in economic terms, the use of a managed charging strategy saves 2.3%, reducing the total cost from USD 66.71 million to USD 65.18 million. The recipients of the presented research are both the demand and supply sides of the future energy transformation based on the idea of synergy of electromobility and renewable energy sources within the framework of the smart city idea.

    This paper describes a bidirectional twisted single-phase single-stage buck-boost dc-ac converter based on an output unfolding circuit. This solution is derived by the combination of an inverting buck-boost dc-dc converter and an unfolding circuit. The operation principle, component design guidelines, along with the control approach are presented. The zero-crossing distortion problem is discussed and solved by a simple approach. The simulation and experimental results confirm all theoretical statements. Loss distribution and achievable efficiency are analyzed. Finally, the pros and cons of the proposed solution, along with the most promising application field, are analyzed and discussed in the conclusion.

    One direction in optimizing wind farm production is reducing wake interactions from upstream turbines. This can be done by optimizing turbine layout as well as optimizing turbine yaw and pitch angles. In particular, wake steering by optimizing yaw angles of wind turbines in farms has received significant attention in recent years. One of the challenges in yaw optimization is developing fast optimization algorithms which can find good solutions in real-time. In this work, we developed a random search algorithm to optimize yaw angles. Optimization was performed on a layout of 39 turbines in a 2 km by 2 km domain. Algorithm specific parameters were tuned for highest solution quality and lowest computational cost. Testing showed that this algorithm can find near-optimal (<1% of best known solutions) solutions consistently over multiple runs, and that quality solutions can be found under 200 iterations. Empirical results show that as wind farm density increases, the potential for yaw optimization increases significantly, and that quality solutions are likely to be plentiful and not unique.

    This paper provides an overview of islanding fault detection in microgrids. Islanding fault is a condition in which the microgrid gets disconnected from the microgrid unintentionally due to any fault in the utility grid. This paper surveys the extensive literature concerning the development of islanding fault detection techniques which can be classified into remote and local techniques, where the local techniques can be further classified as passive, active, and hybrid. Various detection methods in each class are studied, and advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed. A comprehensive list of references is used to conduct this survey, and opportunities and directions for future research are highlighted.

    Matrix acidizing is a highly successful, effective, and relatively inexpensive approach to enhancing well productivity in carbonate formations. Accordingly, there has been little motivation to address the ways to optimize the acid stimulation process better. Acid-in-oil emulsions that form during this process cause one of the most challenging problems that negatively impact the performance and deliverability, especially when these emulsions are highly stable over extended periods. Such stable emulsions can plug the flow path of oil causing high resistance to flow and potentially reducing well productivity. De-emulsifiers are some of the most widely used acid additives targeting the reduction of emulsion stability. However, there is doubt in the research community on whether there is enough shear mixing that can cause the formation of emulsions inside the rock matrix. Besides, the effectiveness of de-emulsifiers in eliminating such emulsions in the pore space has not been investigated. In the current oil price market, there is a need to be more vigilant regarding the cost of well stimulation and the added value from the various additives. While laboratory work on matrix acidizing in carbonate formations is abundant, the work on oil-saturated samples is rare, and therefore, the effect of emulsions on the acidizing process has not been widely documented. In this work, we present a stacked study of bottle tests and core flooding tests designed to investigate the de-emulsifiers’ role in the rock matrix. The results reveal that (1) emulsion-risk in the pore space is real, and (2) the addition of de-emulsifiers to the acid allows for efficient backflow of oil, revealing an improvement in the performance of the acidizing treatment.

    Accurate dynamic models of supercapacitors (SCs) are a basis for the design, control and exploitation of the hybrid energy storage systems for electric vehicles. This paper concerns a fractional model of SC impedance, based on the Cole–Cole equation describing relaxation in electric double layer. This article provides a new method of identifying the parameters of fractional order model of SC impedance, performed without disconnecting the SC module from the energy storage system. The test drive for this purpose needs only the respect a few simple recommendations. The article presents the conditions of the mentioned test drive that will ensure the frequency spectra of the recorded signals lying in the bandwidth necessary for the correct identification of the model parameters. These parameters are determined by means of the Nelder–Mead simplex optimization method. The results of the identification described by the time method coincide with those obtained in the frequency domain. It has been shown in the last part of the article that the real energy losses in these systems significantly exceed the losses determined only on the basis of the nominal capacity and series equivalent resistance (ESR), to which the SC catalogue data are usually limited. This paper also provides an auxiliary frequency criterion for the selection of SCs intended for energy storage systems of electric vehicles.

    The conversion of chemical energy contained in organic matter into electricity has become an object of interest for many scientists worldwide. This technology is used in microbial fuel cells (MFC). Apart from generating electrical energy, these cells can be used simultaneously for wastewater treatment. Although the technology is constantly being improved, currently functioning microbial fuel cells cannot provide appropriate output parameters to use on an industrial scale. One of the barriers is so-called extracellular electron transfer, which in turn depends on the electrode type used, its material, shape, and size. According to current literature, carbon, graphite, stainless steel, and ceramics are the most frequently used electrode materials. However, more and more often, scientists are turning to other, unusual materials, the production of which uses the newest technologies, and one of them is graphene. This material is modified in different ways and connected with other materials, and the results of this seem to be very promising. Scientists manage to get a higher level of extracellular electron transfer and, hence, higher output parameters of the whole system. This article describes chosen technologies and attempts made by scientists worldwide to use graphene in MFC and their results.

    The 2030 zero-net emission target in the E.U. demands a significant improvement in the energy performance of the building stock. This study analyses the adoption of connected thermostats and Home energy-management system solutions (HEMS) as an effective means to tackle the residential energy footprint. It reviews the main features of HEMS systems in terms of technology, cross-study performances, and the obstacles to widespread adoption; the study adopts the case-study methodology to examine the impact on the Italian real estate stock at a regional level. A matrix of adoption scenarios assesses the potential benefits of global residential energy savings, weighted by local climatic variations, dimension, number of single dwellings, and average primary energy reduction per household. Results demonstrate that all adoption scenarios dramatically reduce residential energy consumption, outperforming the E.U. targets for Italy by 2030.

    This paper aims to reconsider prosumers’ role in the power markets in the early stages of their decentralization, accounting for rising self-supply trends, security threats, and economic and regulatory barriers. The development of prosumerism envisages finding the ratio between retail market sales under the feed-in tariff and the net billing mechanism. Within the methodology section, the indicator of prosumer efficiency for electricity generation (EUR/kWh) is proposed based on average consumption/production ratios and consumption/delivery incentives. To support household prosumers, the mentioned incentives on the renewable energy market consider the self-supply cost of electricity, the levelized cost of electricity for small-scale green energy facilities (solar photovoltaic and wind), and transaction costs. This paper evaluates prosumer efficiency under three consumption/production ratio scenarios for Ukrainian households (self-consumption of 40%, 20%, and 100% of green electricity annually generated by a household and selling the leftovers via the feed-in tariff) for 2023. The gradual movement from fixed tariffs for households toward market-based prices promotes the emergence of new related market players and their consolidation in the market. Participation in the organized power market segments is relevant for day-ahead market prices above 130 EUR/MWh, disregarding the households’ tariff rate. The low price caps inhibit the prosumer’s participation in the market, while the transition from the feed-in tariff to net billing significantly promotes their development only under high price caps.

    The main aim of this work is to propose a new algorithm of reliability assessment for steel civil engineering structures subjected to fire temperatures. This new algorithm is based upon the relative probabilistic entropy concept elaborated by Bhattacharyya, and this probabilistic distance is sought in-between extreme and admissible deformations of some structural beam subjected to higher temperatures. Similar to the First Order Reliability Method, this approach uses the first two probabilistic characteristics of the structural response, when structural output may be modelled with the use of Gaussian distribution. The probabilistic structural response is found here using hybrid computational technique–the Finite Element Method system ABAQUS with its fully coupled thermo-elastic analysis with 3D solid elements and probabilistic modules implemented in the computer algebra system MAPLE. The probabilistic response is determined via a triple stochastic analysis, which is based on the classical Monte-Carlo simulation, iterative generalized stochastic perturbation technique, and also using semi-analytical probabilistic calculus. Final determination of the relative entropy in the Serviceability Limit State of the given structure and its comparison with the results obtained using the FORM analysis enables to calibrate this new technique to numerical values proposed in the engineering designing codes. Hence, a more accurate probabilistic method may use some experimental-based admissible values included in the existing design of legal provisions.

    Undoubtedly, the transition to electromobility with several million new, efficient charging points will have consequences for the energy industry, and in particular for network operators of the distribution infrastructure. At the same time, in the coming years the energy landscape will change into a system in which an increase in decentralized systems based on renewable energy sources will take over the leading function. This transformation process will further increase the complexity and overall pressure for change in energy systems over the next decade. In order to be able to ensure the energy supply and the reliable system operation of the grids in the future as well, communicative networking of generators, storage systems, electrical consumers and grid equipment is indispensable. This study aims to investigate the consequences of including electric vehicles in Istanbul’s power system using a unit commitment simulation model. The presented considerations analyze how uncertain and managed charging strategies affect the power system in terms of operating costs and renewable resources. The presented simulations indicate that, in economic terms, the use of a managed charging strategy saves 2.3%, reducing the total cost from USD 66.71 million to USD 65.18 million. The recipients of the presented research are both the demand and supply sides of the future energy transformation based on the idea of synergy of electromobility and renewable energy sources within the framework of the smart city idea.

    This paper describes a bidirectional twisted single-phase single-stage buck-boost dc-ac converter based on an output unfolding circuit. This solution is derived by the combination of an inverting buck-boost dc-dc converter and an unfolding circuit. The operation principle, component design guidelines, along with the control approach are presented. The zero-crossing distortion problem is discussed and solved by a simple approach. The simulation and experimental results confirm all theoretical statements. Loss distribution and achievable efficiency are analyzed. Finally, the pros and cons of the proposed solution, along with the most promising application field, are analyzed and discussed in the conclusion.

    One direction in optimizing wind farm production is reducing wake interactions from upstream turbines. This can be done by optimizing turbine layout as well as optimizing turbine yaw and pitch angles. In particular, wake steering by optimizing yaw angles of wind turbines in farms has received significant attention in recent years. One of the challenges in yaw optimization is developing fast optimization algorithms which can find good solutions in real-time. In this work, we developed a random search algorithm to optimize yaw angles. Optimization was performed on a layout of 39 turbines in a 2 km by 2 km domain. Algorithm specific parameters were tuned for highest solution quality and lowest computational cost. Testing showed that this algorithm can find near-optimal (<1% of best known solutions) solutions consistently over multiple runs, and that quality solutions can be found under 200 iterations. Empirical results show that as wind farm density increases, the potential for yaw optimization increases significantly, and that quality solutions are likely to be plentiful and not unique.

    This paper provides an overview of islanding fault detection in microgrids. Islanding fault is a condition in which the microgrid gets disconnected from the microgrid unintentionally due to any fault in the utility grid. This paper surveys the extensive literature concerning the development of islanding fault detection techniques which can be classified into remote and local techniques, where the local techniques can be further classified as passive, active, and hybrid. Various detection methods in each class are studied, and advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed. A comprehensive list of references is used to conduct this survey, and opportunities and directions for future research are highlighted.

    Matrix acidizing is a highly successful, effective, and relatively inexpensive approach to enhancing well productivity in carbonate formations. Accordingly, there has been little motivation to address the ways to optimize the acid stimulation process better. Acid-in-oil emulsions that form during this process cause one of the most challenging problems that negatively impact the performance and deliverability, especially when these emulsions are highly stable over extended periods. Such stable emulsions can plug the flow path of oil causing high resistance to flow and potentially reducing well productivity. De-emulsifiers are some of the most widely used acid additives targeting the reduction of emulsion stability. However, there is doubt in the research community on whether there is enough shear mixing that can cause the formation of emulsions inside the rock matrix. Besides, the effectiveness of de-emulsifiers in eliminating such emulsions in the pore space has not been investigated. In the current oil price market, there is a need to be more vigilant regarding the cost of well stimulation and the added value from the various additives. While laboratory work on matrix acidizing in carbonate formations is abundant, the work on oil-saturated samples is rare, and therefore, the effect of emulsions on the acidizing process has not been widely documented. In this work, we present a stacked study of bottle tests and core flooding tests designed to investigate the de-emulsifiers’ role in the rock matrix. The results reveal that (1) emulsion-risk in the pore space is real, and (2) the addition of de-emulsifiers to the acid allows for efficient backflow of oil, revealing an improvement in the performance of the acidizing treatment.

    Accurate dynamic models of supercapacitors (SCs) are a basis for the design, control and exploitation of the hybrid energy storage systems for electric vehicles. This paper concerns a fractional model of SC impedance, based on the Cole–Cole equation describing relaxation in electric double layer. This article provides a new method of identifying the parameters of fractional order model of SC impedance, performed without disconnecting the SC module from the energy storage system. The test drive for this purpose needs only the respect a few simple recommendations. The article presents the conditions of the mentioned test drive that will ensure the frequency spectra of the recorded signals lying in the bandwidth necessary for the correct identification of the model parameters. These parameters are determined by means of the Nelder–Mead simplex optimization method. The results of the identification described by the time method coincide with those obtained in the frequency domain. It has been shown in the last part of the article that the real energy losses in these systems significantly exceed the losses determined only on the basis of the nominal capacity and series equivalent resistance (ESR), to which the SC catalogue data are usually limited. This paper also provides an auxiliary frequency criterion for the selection of SCs intended for energy storage systems of electric vehicles.
