Oleksandr Skrylnyk in OpenAIREAbstract The work discusses a problem of harvesting and upgrading of ultra-low grade heat with thermochemical energy storage technology for space and domestic water heating in residential area. The laboratory scale prototype, operating on the principle of an open packed bed sorption reactor and using moist air as a heat/mass transfer fluid, is experimented. The range of experimental air temperature was set to 17–40 °C, which corresponds to the typical range of domestic waste thermal energy. The tested sorbent was a salt-in-matrix composite material composed of a silica gel containing 43 wt.% of calcium chloride (CaCl2) salt. Hygrothermal behavior and energy performances of the prototype control volume filled with 245 g of material, representing the reactive front of a thermal wave, were analyzed at constant inlet hydration conditions (water vapor pressure of 12.5 mbar). The average temperature lift was recorded as 9–13 °C, representing the amplification of a supplied heat on 23% – 75% depending on the inlet temperature. The average specific thermal power inside the material bed was measured to be 168–267 W kg-1. The apparent energy density, based on the prototype control volume, ranged between 1.0 and 1.6 GJ m-3. Taking into account the heat of water vaporization, the coefficient of performance of the process was determined to be 0.96–1.57.

Nevertheless, there is currently no specific forum for discussions on how to deal with biomass trade at the multilateral level. Distortions in agricultural and energy trade regimes, the myriad of standards and the lack of a clear biomass classification in the multilateral trade regime suggest that bio-energy products may not deliver sustainable development gains for all trading partners. This paper analyses then the global impact of bio-energy policies on biomass production and trade, paying particular attention to sustainable development in the bio-energy sector. It examines how a possible reduction and elimination of trade barriers as well as a phasing out of trade distorting support measures would contribute to the development of a global sustainable bio-energy market.

Bio-based plastics are increasingly appearing in a range of consumption products, and after use they often end up in technical recycling chains. Bio-based plastics are different from fossil-based ones and could disturb the current recycling of plastics and hence inhibit the closure of plastic cycles, which is undesirable given the current focus on a transition towards a circular economy. In this paper, this risk has been assessed via three elaborated case studies using data and information retrieved through an extended literature search. No overall risks were revealed for bio-based plastics as a group; rather, every bio-based plastic is to be considered as a potential separate source of contamination in current recycling practices. For PLA (polylactic acid), a severe incompatibility with PET (polyethylene terephthalate) recycling is known; hence, future risks are assessed by measuring amounts of PLA ending up in PET waste streams. For PHA (polyhydroxy alkanoate) there is no risk currently, but it will be crucial to monitor future application development. For PEF (polyethylene furanoate), a particular approach for contamination-related issues has been included in the upcoming market introduction. With respect to developing policy, it is important that any introduction of novel plastics is well guided from a system perspective and with a particular eye on incompatibilities with current and upcoming practices in the recycling of plastics.

François Vallée in OpenAIREAbstract In this paper, a strategy is proposed in order to introduce in a realistic way wind generation into a transmission power system non sequential Monte Carlo adequacy study with economic dispatch. Thanks to the implemented solution, wind generation is consequently confronted to operational constraints related to high powered thermal units, nuclear parks or thermal machines with technical minimum value. Moreover, during each simulated system state, a DC load flow is also calculated in order to evaluate reinforcements optimizing the large scale integration of wind power production. The simulation tool modified during the present work is called Scanner© and is the property of Tractebel Engineering (Gaz de France – Suez) company. It has been here applied to an academic test system: the Roy Billinton Test System (RBTS).

Abstract The implementation of occupancy-controlled and daylighting-dimmed lighting systems has an impact on the energy consumption of residential buildings. The BAC factor method of EN ISO 52120-1 estimates that 8% of the lighting energy can be saved compared to conventional manual control. However, it is assumed that their ability to potentially lower the lighting energy consumption is strongly related to external factors, such as the extent of daylight entrance and the behaviour of the inhabitants. By means of simulations in EnergyPlus, the performances of automated and manual lighting control are compared for an apartment and semi-detached building located in Brussels (Belgium) with variation in the occupant behaviour and orientation. It appears that an automated lighting control including 0-100% dimmer reduces the lighting energy demand for all investigated cases with savings up to 38.4%, whereas a similar control without dimmer does not necessarily reduce the lighting electricity demand. However, the results show a considerable variation, making prediction methods as the BAC factor method highly inaccurate. The actual relative energy performance depends on the automation system, type of building, orientation and occupant behaviour (i.e. number of inhabitants and occupancy rate). Hereby, the number of inhabitants has the most considerable impact on the relative energy performances with differences up to 50%, while the occupancy rate shows a significant correlation, especially for low numbers of inhabitants.

Jyri Mustajoki in OpenAIRESpatial planning has to deal with trade-offs between various stakeholders’ wishes and needs as part of planning and management of landscapes, natural resources and/or biodiversity. To make ecosystem services (ES) trade-off research more relevant for spatial planning, we propose an analytical framework,which puts stakeholders, their land-use/management choices, their impact on ES and responses at the centre. Based on 24 cases from around the world, we used this framing to analyse the appearance and diversity of real-world ES trade-offs. They cover a wide range of trade-offs related to ecosystem use, including: land-use change, management regimes, technical versus nature-based solutions, natural resource use, and management of species. The ES trade-offs studied featured a complexity that was far greater than what is often described in the ES literature. Influential users and context setters are at the core of the trade-off decision-making, but most of the impact is felt by non-influential users. Provisioning and cultural ES were the most targeted in the studied trade-offs, but regulating ES were the most impacted. Stakeholders’ characteristics, such as influence, impact faced, and concerns can partially explain their position and response in relation to trade-offs. Based on the research findings, we formulate recommendations for spatial planning.

This study is intended to provide an economic background for exploring the future policies of the main suppliers of the Community, the type of price movements that can be expected and the possible role of high cost gas. Simulations are provided for both short-term (1985–1990) and long-term (1995–2000) developments. A decrease in Dutch gas prices, Algeria's price concession and abandonment of high prices for Norwegian gas are the main trends arising from the analysis. They all materialized between 1985 and the first half of 1986.

Olivier De Clerck in OpenAIRESeaweed assemblages represent the dominant autotrophic biomass in many coastal environments, playing a central structural and functional role in several ecosystems. In Europe, seaweed assemblages are highly diverse systems. The combined seaweed flora of different European regions hold around 1550 species (belonging to nearly 500 genera), with new species continuously uncovered, thanks to the emergence of molecular tools. In this manuscript we review the effects of global and local stressors on European seaweeds, their communities, and ecosystem functioning. Following a brief review on the present knowledge on European seaweed diversity and distribution, and the role of seaweed communities in biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, we discuss the effects of biotic homogenization (invasive species) and global climate change (shifts in bioclimatic zones and ocean acidification) on the distribution of individual species and their effect on the structure and functioning of seaweed communities. The arrival of new introduced species (that already account for 5–10% of the European seaweeds) and the regional extirpation of native species resulting from oceans' climate change are creating new diversity scenarios with undetermined functional consequences. Anthropogenic local stressors create additional disruption often altering dramatically assemblage's structure. Hence, we discuss ecosystem level effects of such stressors like harvesting, trampling, habitat modification, overgrazing and eutrophication that impact coastal communities at local scales. Last, we conclude by highlighting significant knowledge gaps that need to be addressed to anticipate the combined effects of global and local stressors on seaweed communities. With physical and biological changes occurring at unexpected pace, marine phycologists should now integrate and join their research efforts to be able to contribute efficiently for the conservation and management of coastal systems.

In the next generation of Radio Access Networks (RANs), Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) is considered a promising solution to reduce the latency and the traffic load of backhaul links. It consists of the placement of servers, which provide computing platforms and storage, directly at each Base Station (BS) of these networks. In this paper, the caching feature of this paradigm is considered in a portion of a RAN, powered by a renewable energy generator system, energy batteries and the power grid. The performance of the caching in the RAN is analysed for different traffic characteristics, as well as for different capacity of the caches and different spread of it. Finally, we verify that the usage of a strategy that aims at reducing the energy consumption does not impact the benefits provided by the mobile edge caching.
