From this dimension, this study employed the ecological footprint of the 10 most visited countries (France, Spain, United States, China, Italy, Mexico, United Kingdom, Turkey, Germany, and Thailand) over the period 1995-2016. Specifically, the study employed an econometric approach and found that increase in tourism arrivals and globalization is detrimental to the attainment of sustainable environmental quality in a long term. Precisely, a 1% increase in international arrivals and globalization is responsible for a 0.18 and 0.89% increase in ecological footprint in the long-run. These impacts of tourism activities and globalization are detrimental to the environmental quality of the destination countries. Meanwhile, the real income per capita and biocapacity in the destination countries improve the environmental quality of the panel of destination countries in the long-run. In addition, the study found significant evidence of Granger causality from tourism and real income to ecological footprint without feedback, the globalization-ecological footprint Granger causality nexus is with feedback. Moreover, potentially effective policies for government and other stakeholders especially toward attaining Global goals were proffered in the study.

Therefore, there is substantial scope for simulating and assessing potential energy retrofit options for industrial buildings. Building Energy Modelling (BEM) applied to industrial buildings poses a complex but important opportunity for reducing global energy demand, due to years of renovation and expansion. Large and complex industrial buildings make modelling existing geometry for BEM difficult and time consuming. This paper presents a potential solution for quickly capturing and processing as-built geometry of a factory to be utilized in BEM. Laser scans were captured from the interior of an industrial facility to produce a Point Cloud. The existing capabilities of a Point Cloud processing software were assessed to identify the potential development opportunities to automate the conversion of Point Clouds to building geometry for BEM applications. In conclusion, scope exists for increasing the speed of 3D geometry creation of an existing industrial building for application in BEM and subsequent thermal simulation.

An actual event occurred on Tianzhong UHVDC transmission project was analyzed with data from fault recorder. UHVDC transmission model with commutation failure prevention control was established in PSCAD/EMTDC, and then it was applied to replay the event. It is found that the frequent maloperation of commutation failure control and the fluctuation of DC power exist when inrush current occurred. An improved commutation failure prevention control strategy was proposed to avoid this phenomenon. Validity of the improved method was proved by the simulation results.

Northrop; Jaime A. Valencia; Charles J. Mart;AbstractThe Controlled Freeze Zone™ technology removes CO2 and H2S from natural gas in a single step cryogenic distillation process. Removal and management of acid gas impurities from natural gas pose significant challenges in developing sour gas fields. In many cases CFZ™ is capable of processing sour gases with a wide range of CO2 and H2S compositions at a lower cost than conventional technologies. The acidic components are removed as a high pressure liquid that can be injected into reservoirs for geosequestration or, when of suitable composition, to improve oil recovery. In either case, sulfur production from H2S and release of CO2 to the atmosphere can be eliminated.CFZ™ technology was successfully demonstrated through earlier pilot plant operations. Currently, ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company is advancing CFZ™ to large scale commercial readiness through a commercial demonstration plant in Wyoming, USA. By building the commercial demonstration plant at ExxonMobil’s world-class Shute Creek gas treating and acid gas injection facility, integration of CFZ™ with acid gas injection, will also be demonstrated when the unit is operated in 2010–2011.

Northrop; Jaime A. Valencia; Charles J. Mart;AbstractThe Controlled Freeze Zone™ technology removes CO2 and H2S from natural gas in a single step cryogenic distillation process. Removal and management of acid gas impurities from natural gas pose significant challenges in developing sour gas fields. In many cases CFZ™ is capable of processing sour gases with a wide range of CO2 and H2S compositions at a lower cost than conventional technologies. The acidic components are removed as a high pressure liquid that can be injected into reservoirs for geosequestration or, when of suitable composition, to improve oil recovery. In either case, sulfur production from H2S and release of CO2 to the atmosphere can be eliminated.CFZ™ technology was successfully demonstrated through earlier pilot plant operations. Currently, ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company is advancing CFZ™ to large scale commercial readiness through a commercial demonstration plant in Wyoming, USA. By building the commercial demonstration plant at ExxonMobil’s world-class Shute Creek gas treating and acid gas injection facility, integration of CFZ™ with acid gas injection, will also be demonstrated when the unit is operated in 2010–2011.

We assessed the physical, chemical and toxicological characteristics of particulate emissions from four light-duty gasoline direct injection vehicles when operated over the LA92 driving cycle. Our results showed that particle mass and number emissions increased markedly during accelerations. For three of the four vehicles tested, particulate matter (PM) mass and particle number emissions were markedly higher during cold-start and the first few accelerations following the cold-start period than during the hot running and hot-start segments of the LA92 cycle. For one vehicle (which had the highest emissions overall) the hot-start and cold-start PM emissions were similar. Black carbon emissions were also much higher during the cold-start conditions, indicating severe fuel wetting leading to slow evaporation and pool burning, and subsequent soot formation. Particle number concentrations and black carbon emissions showed large reductions during the urban and hot-start phases of the test cycle. The oxidative potential of PM was quantified with both a chemical and a biological assay, and the gene expression impacts of the PM in a macrophage model with PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) analyses. Inter- and intra-vehicle variability in oxidative potential per milligram of PM emitted was relatively low for both oxidative assays, suggesting that real-world emissions and exposure can be estimated with distance-normalized emission factors. The PCR response from signaling markers for oxidative stress (e.g., NOX1) was greater than from inflammatory, AhR (aryl hydrocarbon receptor), or MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) signaling. Protein production associated with inflammation (tumor necrosis factor alpha-TNFα) and oxidative stress (HMOX-1) were quantified and displayed relatively high inter-vehicle variability, suggesting that these pathways may be activated by different PM components. Correlation of trace metal concentrations and oxidative potential suggests a role for small, insoluble particles in inducing oxidative stress.

Lerch;Abstract An international workshop was held in Richland, Washington, United States of America, in October, 1980 to discuss progress on development of the acid digestion process for treating combustible nuclear waste. The workshop was attended by participants from nine member countries of the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD/NEA). The status of the acid digestion development programs of various countries is discussed in this paper. The acid digestion process has been developed and demonstrated on an engineering scale in several countries and appears to be especially applicable to treatment of combustible wastes containing high levels of transuranic contamination, where there is potential for recovering the transuranic radionuclides. Because the process takes place at a relatively low temperature, the plutonium contained in the residue is in a form that can be readily recovered using standard leaching techniques. The process is adaptable to a wide variety of combustible wastes, such as cellulosics, plastics, rubber materials, and ion exchange resin. While the process has been developed and demonstrated on an engineering scale primarily for transuranic contaminated wastes, the process is also adaptable to beta-gamma wastes such as reactor ion exchange resins.

The objective of the project is to promote green power and to improve smartness of electric vehicle by monitoring the battery parameters such as voltage, temperature, current and charge avaibility. Also, these values displayed in cloud, which brings the concept of Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT based battery monitoring system consist of two major parts i) Monitoring device and ii) User interface. Based on experimental results, the system is capable to detect battery performance.

In this study, a control-oriented dynamic model capable of describing the spatial distribution of voltage and relative humidity (RH) in a large fuel cell stack is developed and experimentally validated. The model tracks energy and mass flow inside the cathode, anode, and coolant channels, as well as the fuel cell stack body. Validation tests show that the model agrees well with the experimental data. The new modeling framework developed in this study can be used to predict the localized effects of humidity on the performance of a fuel cell stack. Also, given its accurate prediction of RH in the stack, this model can be used as an observer to predict local humidity variations that are, otherwise, not available. This capability would allow PEM fuel cells to avoid membrane damage due to low operating humidities as well as efficiency losses due to catalyst layer flooding.

In this study, a control-oriented dynamic model capable of describing the spatial distribution of voltage and relative humidity (RH) in a large fuel cell stack is developed and experimentally validated. The model tracks energy and mass flow inside the cathode, anode, and coolant channels, as well as the fuel cell stack body. Validation tests show that the model agrees well with the experimental data. The new modeling framework developed in this study can be used to predict the localized effects of humidity on the performance of a fuel cell stack. Also, given its accurate prediction of RH in the stack, this model can be used as an observer to predict local humidity variations that are, otherwise, not available. This capability would allow PEM fuel cells to avoid membrane damage due to low operating humidities as well as efficiency losses due to catalyst layer flooding.

They are interrelated and have been combined into one software system. An approximation of its characteristics using regression equations of different orders with mean-square rate control is used in the algorithms to determine static parameters. A combined optimizing algorithm that is based on the least squares method and alternating-variable descent method is used to determine dynamic parameters. A new effective and adaptive method of sliding trigonometric interpolation is used to filter out possible noise in measuring channels of voltage and current sensors, while determining the parameters of sinusoidal signals in the stationary modes and dots of envelope curves in the transient modes. To reduce the time needed to obtain static characteristics, the software has a special virtual instrument with a field current control loop with a PID controller that provides desired field forcing. The SMTest software system has been tested using HIL modeling and laboratory test stations. Analysis of test results shows that, even when the acquired signal has a 30% noise level, the calculation error in the determination of parameters does not exceed 6%. The software, when used in stationary or mobile test stations, allows automating the process of obtaining characteristics and determining the main static and dynamic parameters of midand high-power rotor synchronous machines.

From this dimension, this study employed the ecological footprint of the 10 most visited countries (France, Spain, United States, China, Italy, Mexico, United Kingdom, Turkey, Germany, and Thailand) over the period 1995-2016. Specifically, the study employed an econometric approach and found that increase in tourism arrivals and globalization is detrimental to the attainment of sustainable environmental quality in a long term. Precisely, a 1% increase in international arrivals and globalization is responsible for a 0.18 and 0.89% increase in ecological footprint in the long-run. These impacts of tourism activities and globalization are detrimental to the environmental quality of the destination countries. Meanwhile, the real income per capita and biocapacity in the destination countries improve the environmental quality of the panel of destination countries in the long-run. In addition, the study found significant evidence of Granger causality from tourism and real income to ecological footprint without feedback, the globalization-ecological footprint Granger causality nexus is with feedback. Moreover, potentially effective policies for government and other stakeholders especially toward attaining Global goals were proffered in the study.

Therefore, there is substantial scope for simulating and assessing potential energy retrofit options for industrial buildings. Building Energy Modelling (BEM) applied to industrial buildings poses a complex but important opportunity for reducing global energy demand, due to years of renovation and expansion. Large and complex industrial buildings make modelling existing geometry for BEM difficult and time consuming. This paper presents a potential solution for quickly capturing and processing as-built geometry of a factory to be utilized in BEM. Laser scans were captured from the interior of an industrial facility to produce a Point Cloud. The existing capabilities of a Point Cloud processing software were assessed to identify the potential development opportunities to automate the conversion of Point Clouds to building geometry for BEM applications. In conclusion, scope exists for increasing the speed of 3D geometry creation of an existing industrial building for application in BEM and subsequent thermal simulation.

An actual event occurred on Tianzhong UHVDC transmission project was analyzed with data from fault recorder. UHVDC transmission model with commutation failure prevention control was established in PSCAD/EMTDC, and then it was applied to replay the event. It is found that the frequent maloperation of commutation failure control and the fluctuation of DC power exist when inrush current occurred. An improved commutation failure prevention control strategy was proposed to avoid this phenomenon. Validity of the improved method was proved by the simulation results.

An actual event occurred on Tianzhong UHVDC transmission project was analyzed with data from fault recorder. UHVDC transmission model with commutation failure prevention control was established in PSCAD/EMTDC, and then it was applied to replay the event. It is found that the frequent maloperation of commutation failure control and the fluctuation of DC power exist when inrush current occurred. An improved commutation failure prevention control strategy was proposed to avoid this phenomenon. Validity of the improved method was proved by the simulation results.

Removal and management of acid gas impurities from natural gas pose significant challenges in developing sour gas fields. In many cases CFZ™ is capable of processing sour gases with a wide range of CO2 and H2S compositions at a lower cost than conventional technologies. The acidic components are removed as a high pressure liquid that can be injected into reservoirs for geosequestration or, when of suitable composition, to improve oil recovery. In either case, sulfur production from H2S and release of CO2 to the atmosphere can be eliminated.CFZ™ technology was successfully demonstrated through earlier pilot plant operations. Currently, ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company is advancing CFZ™ to large scale commercial readiness through a commercial demonstration plant in Wyoming, USA. By building the commercial demonstration plant at ExxonMobil’s world-class Shute Creek gas treating and acid gas injection facility, integration of CFZ™ with acid gas injection, will also be demonstrated when the unit is operated in 2010–2011.

We assessed the physical, chemical and toxicological characteristics of particulate emissions from four light-duty gasoline direct injection vehicles when operated over the LA92 driving cycle. Our results showed that particle mass and number emissions increased markedly during accelerations. For three of the four vehicles tested, particulate matter (PM) mass and particle number emissions were markedly higher during cold-start and the first few accelerations following the cold-start period than during the hot running and hot-start segments of the LA92 cycle. For one vehicle (which had the highest emissions overall) the hot-start and cold-start PM emissions were similar. Black carbon emissions were also much higher during the cold-start conditions, indicating severe fuel wetting leading to slow evaporation and pool burning, and subsequent soot formation. Particle number concentrations and black carbon emissions showed large reductions during the urban and hot-start phases of the test cycle. The oxidative potential of PM was quantified with both a chemical and a biological assay, and the gene expression impacts of the PM in a macrophage model with PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) analyses. Inter- and intra-vehicle variability in oxidative potential per milligram of PM emitted was relatively low for both oxidative assays, suggesting that real-world emissions and exposure can be estimated with distance-normalized emission factors. The PCR response from signaling markers for oxidative stress (e.g., NOX1) was greater than from inflammatory, AhR (aryl hydrocarbon receptor), or MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) signaling. Protein production associated with inflammation (tumor necrosis factor alpha-TNFα) and oxidative stress (HMOX-1) were quantified and displayed relatively high inter-vehicle variability, suggesting that these pathways may be activated by different PM components. Correlation of trace metal concentrations and oxidative potential suggests a role for small, insoluble particles in inducing oxidative stress.

Lerch;Abstract An international workshop was held in Richland, Washington, United States of America, in October, 1980 to discuss progress on development of the acid digestion process for treating combustible nuclear waste. The workshop was attended by participants from nine member countries of the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD/NEA). The status of the acid digestion development programs of various countries is discussed in this paper. The acid digestion process has been developed and demonstrated on an engineering scale in several countries and appears to be especially applicable to treatment of combustible wastes containing high levels of transuranic contamination, where there is potential for recovering the transuranic radionuclides. Because the process takes place at a relatively low temperature, the plutonium contained in the residue is in a form that can be readily recovered using standard leaching techniques. The process is adaptable to a wide variety of combustible wastes, such as cellulosics, plastics, rubber materials, and ion exchange resin. While the process has been developed and demonstrated on an engineering scale primarily for transuranic contaminated wastes, the process is also adaptable to beta-gamma wastes such as reactor ion exchange resins.

Electric vehicle totally depends upon the source of energy from the battery. In this project, the idea of monitoring the performance of the vehicle using IoT techniques is proposed, so that monitoring can be done easily and directly. The objective of the project is to promote green power and to improve smartness of electric vehicle by monitoring the battery parameters such as voltage, temperature, current and charge avaibility. Also, these values displayed in cloud, which brings the concept of Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT based battery monitoring system consist of two major parts i) Monitoring device and ii) User interface. Based on experimental results, the system is capable to detect battery performance.

In this study, a control-oriented dynamic model capable of describing the spatial distribution of voltage and relative humidity (RH) in a large fuel cell stack is developed and experimentally validated. The model tracks energy and mass flow inside the cathode, anode, and coolant channels, as well as the fuel cell stack body. Validation tests show that the model agrees well with the experimental data. The new modeling framework developed in this study can be used to predict the localized effects of humidity on the performance of a fuel cell stack. Also, given its accurate prediction of RH in the stack, this model can be used as an observer to predict local humidity variations that are, otherwise, not available. This capability would allow PEM fuel cells to avoid membrane damage due to low operating humidities as well as efficiency losses due to catalyst layer flooding.

Istselemov;We have developed algorithms and programs for automated tests of synchronous machines. The programs were made using the LabVIEW development system. They are interrelated and have been combined into one software system. An approximation of its characteristics using regression equations of different orders with mean-square rate control is used in the algorithms to determine static parameters. A combined optimizing algorithm that is based on the least squares method and alternating-variable descent method is used to determine dynamic parameters. A new effective and adaptive method of sliding trigonometric interpolation is used to filter out possible noise in measuring channels of voltage and current sensors, while determining the parameters of sinusoidal signals in the stationary modes and dots of envelope curves in the transient modes. To reduce the time needed to obtain static characteristics, the software has a special virtual instrument with a field current control loop with a PID controller that provides desired field forcing. The SMTest software system has been tested using HIL modeling and laboratory test stations. Analysis of test results shows that, even when the acquired signal has a 30% noise level, the calculation error in the determination of parameters does not exceed 6%. The software, when used in stationary or mobile test stations, allows automating the process of obtaining characteristics and determining the main static and dynamic parameters of midand high-power rotor synchronous machines.
