    Abstract. Impact fatigue caused by collision with rain droplets, hail stones and other airborne particles, also known as leading-edge erosion, is a severe problem for wind turbine blades. Each impact on the leading edge adds an increment to the accumulated damage in the material. After a number of impacts the leading-edge material will crack. This paper presents and supports the hypothesis that the vast majority of the damage accumulated in the leading edge is imposed at extreme precipitation condition events, which occur during a very small fraction of the turbine's operation life. By reducing the tip speed of the blades during these events, the service life of the leading edges significantly increases from a few years to the full expected lifetime of the wind turbine. This life extension may cost a negligible reduction in annual energy production (AEP) in the worst case, and in the best case a significant increase in AEP will be achieved.

    AbstractLeading‐edge erosion (LEE) of wind turbine blades is caused by the impact of particles, for example, raindrops, and leads to a loss in the power production and high maintenance cost. Investigations have shown that a reduction in tip speed, so‐called erosion‐safe mode, increases the blade lifetime but the influence of different drop‐size parameterizations and rain amounts on the blade lifetime is unclear. This study compares blade lifetime calculations using two different drop‐size parameterizations, which both describe a characteristic drop size of a rain measurement. Furthermore, changes in blade lifetime in case rain amount is increased or decreased are investigated as well as the effect of different wind shear exponents. The blade‐lifetime calculations are based on a kinetic‐energy model and an accumulated rain model. The results show that a drop‐size parameterization based on rain rate leads to 44 times longer blade lifetime compared with a parameterization using in situ drop‐size measurements. This large difference is probably due to the underestimation of large drops of the first mentioned parameterization. A change in rain amount of about ±17 % results only in a marginal change in blade lifetime. For both cases and models, an extension of blade lifetime was calculated when reducing the tip speed during specific rain events. The change of wind shear exponents caused as well a considerable effect on the lifetime prediction. Overall, blade lifetime is primary depending on the chosen model, where the kinetic‐energy model is highly sensitive to the drop‐size parameterization.

    This article highlights the inter-comparisons of the wind measurement techniques available in deep water areas working towards combining them to obtain optimal estimates of the wind power potential. More specifically, this article presents comparisons of the Ferry Lidar Experiment wind data with those of the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT), the FINO2 meteorological mast, and the New European Wind Atlas (NEWA) simulations performed using the Weather Research, and Forecasting (WRF) mesoscale model. To be comparable to ASCAT surface winds, which are referenced at 10 m, the ferry lidar and FINO2 wind profile measurements were extrapolated down to 10 m using atmospheric stability information derived from the bulk Richardson number formulation. ASCAT had the lowest associated error compared with that of the ferry lidar in near-neutral atmospheric stratifications, whereas FINO2, despite a distance range of 30 km and a moving ferry lidar target, had the highest correlation and lowest RMSE in all atmospheric conditions. Due to the high frequency of low-level jets caused by the proximity to land from all directions as well as typically stable atmospheric conditions, the extrapolated ferry lidar measurements underpredicted the ASCAT 10 m wind speeds. WRF consistently underperformed compared to the other measurement methods, even with the ability to directly compare results with all other sources at all heights.

Modeling of rain erosion damage, considering atmospheric conditions, improves our understanding of the progression of leading-edge erosion on wind turbine blades. In this study, we investigate the impact of varying raindrop characteristics on rain erosion damage development. We analyse 2.5 years of data from a disdrometer, which measures the size and velocity of falling rain droplets, at Risø campus. Various post-processing methods of the disdrometer data are used for estimating representative droplet diameters and fall velocities for each rain event. We compare measured droplet fall velocities with theoretical terminal velocities, revealing a necessity for revising theoretical approaches to raindrop fall velocity for erosion damage modeling. The measured rain rates and representative fall velocities are used to calculate the liquid water content in the air. We introduce a bin-wise summation method for estimating the liquid water content, circumventing the need for representative droplet assumptions. As this method provides the most accurate input for the damage model, we benchmark the other post-processing methods against it and employ it to evaluate bias estimates of associated damage predictions. The largest bias (22%) in accumulated damage is found with an arithmetic mean droplet diameter approach and the smallest bias (-2%) with the median volume estimation method for damage model input. Furthermore, we demonstrate that, for a given rainfall volume, smaller droplets contribute to larger accumulated damage compared to larger droplets.

    Abstract. Rapid growth in the offshore wind energy sector means more offshore wind farms are placed closer to each other and in the lee of large land masses. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) offers maps of the wind speed offshore with high resolution over large areas. These can be used to detect horizontal wind speed gradients close to shore and wind farm wake effects. SAR observations have become much more available with the free and open-access data from European satellite missions through Copernicus. Examples of applications and tools for using large archives of SAR wind maps to aid offshore site assessment are few. The Anholt wind farm operated by the utility company Ørsted is located in coastal waters and experiences strong spatial variations in the mean wind speed. Wind speeds derived from the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system are available at the turbine locations for comparison with winds retrieved from SAR. The correlation is good, both for free-stream and waked conditions. Spatial wind speed variations along the rows of wind turbines derived from SAR wind maps prior to the wind farm construction agree well with information gathered by the SCADA system and a numerical weather prediction model. Wind farm wakes are detected by comparisons between images before and after the wind farm construction. SAR wind maps clearly show wakes for long and constant fetches but the wake effect is less pronounced for short and varying fetches. Our results suggest that SAR wind maps can support offshore wind energy site assessment by introducing observations in the early phases of wind farm projects.

    An enhanced understanding of the mechanisms responsible for wind turbine blade leading-edge erosion (LEE) and advancing technology readiness level (TRL) solutions for monitoring its environmental drivers, reducing LEE, detecting LEE evolution, and mitigating its impact on power production are a high priority for all wind farm owners/operators and wind turbine manufacturers. Identifying and implementing solutions has the potential to continue historical trends toward lower Levelized Cost of Energy (LCoE) from wind turbines by reducing both energy yield losses and operations and maintenance costs associated with LEE. Here, we present results from the first Phenomena Identification and Ranking Tables (PIRT) assessment for wind turbine blade LEE. We document the LEE-relevant phenomena/processes that are deemed by this expert judgment assessment tool to be the highest priorities for research investment within four themes: atmospheric drivers, damage detection and quantification, material response, and aerodynamic implications. The highest priority issues, in terms of importance to LEE but where expert judgment indicates that there is a lack of fundamental knowledge, and/or implementation in measurement, and modeling is incomplete include the accurate quantification of hydrometeor size distribution (HSD) and phase, the translation of water impingement to material loss/stress, the representation of operating conditions within rain erosion testers, the quantification of damage and surface roughness progression through time, and the aerodynamic losses as a function of damage morphology. We discuss and summarize examples of research endeavors that are currently being undertaken and/or could be initiated to reduce uncertainty in the identified high-priority research areas and thus enhance the TRLs of solutions to mitigate/reduce LEE.

    Abstract. Leading edge erosion (LEE) of wind turbine blades is caused by the impact of hydrometeors, which appear in solid or liquid phase. A reduction of the wind turbine blades’ tip speed during severe precipitation events can mitigate LEE. To apply such an erosion-safe mode, a precipitation nowcast is required. Theoretical considerations indicate that the time a raindrop needs to fall to the ground is sufficient to reduce the tip speed. Furthermore, it is described that a compact vertical pointing radar that measures rain in different heights with a sufficient high spatio-temporal resolution can nowcast rain for an erosion-safe mode.

    Abstract. The increasing demand for wind energy offshore requires more hub-height-relevant wind information, while larger wind turbine sizes require measurements at greater heights. In situ measurements are harder to acquire at higher atmospheric levels; meanwhile the emergence of machine-learning applications has led to several studies demonstrating the improvement in accuracy for vertical wind extrapolation over conventional power-law and logarithmic-profile methods. Satellite wind retrievals supply multiple daily wind observations offshore, however only at 10 m height. The goal of this study is to develop and validate novel machine-learning methods using satellite wind observations and near-surface atmospheric measurements to extrapolate wind speeds to higher heights. A machine-learning model is trained on 12 years of collocated offshore wind measurements from a meteorological mast (FINO3) and space-borne wind observations from the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT). The model is extended vertically to predict the FINO3 vertical wind profile. Horizontally, it is validated against the NORwegian hindcast Archive (NORA3) mesoscale model reanalysis data. In both cases the model slightly over-predicts the wind speed with differences of 0.25 and 0.40 m s−1, respectively. An important feature in the model-training process is the air–sea temperature difference; thus satellite sea surface temperature observations were included in the horizontal extension of the model, resulting in 0.20 m s−1 differences with NORA3. A limiting factor when training machine-learning models with satellite observations is the small finite number of daily samples at discrete times; this can skew the training process to higher-/lower-wind-speed predictions depending on the average wind speed at the satellite observational times. Nonetheless, results shown in this proof-of-concept study demonstrate the limited applicability of using machine-learning techniques to extrapolate long-term satellite wind observations when enough samples are available.

    ABSTRACTSatellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) provides ocean surface wind fields at 10 m above sea level. The objective is to investigate the capability of SAR satellite StriX observations for mapping offshore wind farm wakes. The focus is on the conditions under which an apparent wind speed‐up is generated, measured in 48% of the 67 images available. The results compare well to Sentinel‐1 observations, showing a 34% wind speed‐up rate during several years based on 1171 images. Three wind speed‐up cases have been studied in detail using the mesoscale Weather, Research, and Forecasting (WRF) model with two wind farm parameterizations. At 10 m above sea level, the SAR‐based observations and WRF model compare for most cases, though only when turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) is included in the wind farm parameterization. The TKE mixes higher momentum downward in a stable atmosphere, causing surface wind speed‐up near the surface.

    The offshore wind climate in Iceland is examined based on satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR), coastal meteorological station measurements, and results from two atmospheric model data sets, HARMONIE and NORA10. The offshore winds in Iceland are highly influenced by the rugged coastline. Lee effects, gap flow, coastal barrier jets, and atmospheric gravity waves are not only observed in SAR, but are also modeled well from HARMONIE. Offshore meteorological observations are not available, but wind speed and wind direction measurements from coastal meteorological masts are found to compare well to nearby offshore locations observed by SAR. More than 2500 SAR scenes from the Envisat ASAR wide swath mode are used for wind energy resource estimation. The wind energy potential observed from satellite SAR shows high values above ${1000}\;{Wm}^{ - {2}}$ in coastal regions in the south, east, and west, with lower values in the north. The most promising region for wind energy production is the southwestern coastal region.

    Abstract. Impact fatigue caused by collision with rain droplets, hail stones and other airborne particles, also known as leading-edge erosion, is a severe problem for wind turbine blades. Each impact on the leading edge adds an increment to the accumulated damage in the material. After a number of impacts the leading-edge material will crack. This paper presents and supports the hypothesis that the vast majority of the damage accumulated in the leading edge is imposed at extreme precipitation condition events, which occur during a very small fraction of the turbine's operation life. By reducing the tip speed of the blades during these events, the service life of the leading edges significantly increases from a few years to the full expected lifetime of the wind turbine. This life extension may cost a negligible reduction in annual energy production (AEP) in the worst case, and in the best case a significant increase in AEP will be achieved.

    AbstractLeading‐edge erosion (LEE) of wind turbine blades is caused by the impact of particles, for example, raindrops, and leads to a loss in the power production and high maintenance cost. Investigations have shown that a reduction in tip speed, so‐called erosion‐safe mode, increases the blade lifetime but the influence of different drop‐size parameterizations and rain amounts on the blade lifetime is unclear. This study compares blade lifetime calculations using two different drop‐size parameterizations, which both describe a characteristic drop size of a rain measurement. Furthermore, changes in blade lifetime in case rain amount is increased or decreased are investigated as well as the effect of different wind shear exponents. The blade‐lifetime calculations are based on a kinetic‐energy model and an accumulated rain model. The results show that a drop‐size parameterization based on rain rate leads to 44 times longer blade lifetime compared with a parameterization using in situ drop‐size measurements. This large difference is probably due to the underestimation of large drops of the first mentioned parameterization. A change in rain amount of about ±17 % results only in a marginal change in blade lifetime. For both cases and models, an extension of blade lifetime was calculated when reducing the tip speed during specific rain events. The change of wind shear exponents caused as well a considerable effect on the lifetime prediction. Overall, blade lifetime is primary depending on the chosen model, where the kinetic‐energy model is highly sensitive to the drop‐size parameterization.

    This article highlights the inter-comparisons of the wind measurement techniques available in deep water areas working towards combining them to obtain optimal estimates of the wind power potential. More specifically, this article presents comparisons of the Ferry Lidar Experiment wind data with those of the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT), the FINO2 meteorological mast, and the New European Wind Atlas (NEWA) simulations performed using the Weather Research, and Forecasting (WRF) mesoscale model. To be comparable to ASCAT surface winds, which are referenced at 10 m, the ferry lidar and FINO2 wind profile measurements were extrapolated down to 10 m using atmospheric stability information derived from the bulk Richardson number formulation. ASCAT had the lowest associated error compared with that of the ferry lidar in near-neutral atmospheric stratifications, whereas FINO2, despite a distance range of 30 km and a moving ferry lidar target, had the highest correlation and lowest RMSE in all atmospheric conditions. Due to the high frequency of low-level jets caused by the proximity to land from all directions as well as typically stable atmospheric conditions, the extrapolated ferry lidar measurements underpredicted the ASCAT 10 m wind speeds. WRF consistently underperformed compared to the other measurement methods, even with the ability to directly compare results with all other sources at all heights.

    Abstract Wind turbine blade erosion poses a significant challenge to the durability and performance of wind turbines. Modeling of rain erosion damage, considering atmospheric conditions, improves our understanding of the progression of leading-edge erosion on wind turbine blades. In this study, we investigate the impact of varying raindrop characteristics on rain erosion damage development. We analyse 2.5 years of data from a disdrometer, which measures the size and velocity of falling rain droplets, at Risø campus. Various post-processing methods of the disdrometer data are used for estimating representative droplet diameters and fall velocities for each rain event. We compare measured droplet fall velocities with theoretical terminal velocities, revealing a necessity for revising theoretical approaches to raindrop fall velocity for erosion damage modeling. The measured rain rates and representative fall velocities are used to calculate the liquid water content in the air. We introduce a bin-wise summation method for estimating the liquid water content, circumventing the need for representative droplet assumptions. As this method provides the most accurate input for the damage model, we benchmark the other post-processing methods against it and employ it to evaluate bias estimates of associated damage predictions. The largest bias (22%) in accumulated damage is found with an arithmetic mean droplet diameter approach and the smallest bias (-2%) with the median volume estimation method for damage model input. Furthermore, we demonstrate that, for a given rainfall volume, smaller droplets contribute to larger accumulated damage compared to larger droplets.

    Abstract. Rapid growth in the offshore wind energy sector means more offshore wind farms are placed closer to each other and in the lee of large land masses. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) offers maps of the wind speed offshore with high resolution over large areas. These can be used to detect horizontal wind speed gradients close to shore and wind farm wake effects. SAR observations have become much more available with the free and open-access data from European satellite missions through Copernicus. Examples of applications and tools for using large archives of SAR wind maps to aid offshore site assessment are few. The Anholt wind farm operated by the utility company Ørsted is located in coastal waters and experiences strong spatial variations in the mean wind speed. Wind speeds derived from the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system are available at the turbine locations for comparison with winds retrieved from SAR. The correlation is good, both for free-stream and waked conditions. Spatial wind speed variations along the rows of wind turbines derived from SAR wind maps prior to the wind farm construction agree well with information gathered by the SCADA system and a numerical weather prediction model. Wind farm wakes are detected by comparisons between images before and after the wind farm construction. SAR wind maps clearly show wakes for long and constant fetches but the wake effect is less pronounced for short and varying fetches. Our results suggest that SAR wind maps can support offshore wind energy site assessment by introducing observations in the early phases of wind farm projects.

    An enhanced understanding of the mechanisms responsible for wind turbine blade leading-edge erosion (LEE) and advancing technology readiness level (TRL) solutions for monitoring its environmental drivers, reducing LEE, detecting LEE evolution, and mitigating its impact on power production are a high priority for all wind farm owners/operators and wind turbine manufacturers. Identifying and implementing solutions has the potential to continue historical trends toward lower Levelized Cost of Energy (LCoE) from wind turbines by reducing both energy yield losses and operations and maintenance costs associated with LEE. Here, we present results from the first Phenomena Identification and Ranking Tables (PIRT) assessment for wind turbine blade LEE. We document the LEE-relevant phenomena/processes that are deemed by this expert judgment assessment tool to be the highest priorities for research investment within four themes: atmospheric drivers, damage detection and quantification, material response, and aerodynamic implications. The highest priority issues, in terms of importance to LEE but where expert judgment indicates that there is a lack of fundamental knowledge, and/or implementation in measurement, and modeling is incomplete include the accurate quantification of hydrometeor size distribution (HSD) and phase, the translation of water impingement to material loss/stress, the representation of operating conditions within rain erosion testers, the quantification of damage and surface roughness progression through time, and the aerodynamic losses as a function of damage morphology. We discuss and summarize examples of research endeavors that are currently being undertaken and/or could be initiated to reduce uncertainty in the identified high-priority research areas and thus enhance the TRLs of solutions to mitigate/reduce LEE.

    Abstract. Leading edge erosion (LEE) of wind turbine blades is caused by the impact of hydrometeors, which appear in solid or liquid phase. A reduction of the wind turbine blades’ tip speed during severe precipitation events can mitigate LEE. To apply such an erosion-safe mode, a precipitation nowcast is required. Theoretical considerations indicate that the time a raindrop needs to fall to the ground is sufficient to reduce the tip speed. Furthermore, it is described that a compact vertical pointing radar that measures rain in different heights with a sufficient high spatio-temporal resolution can nowcast rain for an erosion-safe mode.

    Abstract. The increasing demand for wind energy offshore requires more hub-height-relevant wind information, while larger wind turbine sizes require measurements at greater heights. In situ measurements are harder to acquire at higher atmospheric levels; meanwhile the emergence of machine-learning applications has led to several studies demonstrating the improvement in accuracy for vertical wind extrapolation over conventional power-law and logarithmic-profile methods. Satellite wind retrievals supply multiple daily wind observations offshore, however only at 10 m height. The goal of this study is to develop and validate novel machine-learning methods using satellite wind observations and near-surface atmospheric measurements to extrapolate wind speeds to higher heights. A machine-learning model is trained on 12 years of collocated offshore wind measurements from a meteorological mast (FINO3) and space-borne wind observations from the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT). The model is extended vertically to predict the FINO3 vertical wind profile. Horizontally, it is validated against the NORwegian hindcast Archive (NORA3) mesoscale model reanalysis data. In both cases the model slightly over-predicts the wind speed with differences of 0.25 and 0.40 m s−1, respectively. An important feature in the model-training process is the air–sea temperature difference; thus satellite sea surface temperature observations were included in the horizontal extension of the model, resulting in 0.20 m s−1 differences with NORA3. A limiting factor when training machine-learning models with satellite observations is the small finite number of daily samples at discrete times; this can skew the training process to higher-/lower-wind-speed predictions depending on the average wind speed at the satellite observational times. Nonetheless, results shown in this proof-of-concept study demonstrate the limited applicability of using machine-learning techniques to extrapolate long-term satellite wind observations when enough samples are available.

    ABSTRACTSatellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) provides ocean surface wind fields at 10 m above sea level. The objective is to investigate the capability of SAR satellite StriX observations for mapping offshore wind farm wakes. The focus is on the conditions under which an apparent wind speed‐up is generated, measured in 48% of the 67 images available. The results compare well to Sentinel‐1 observations, showing a 34% wind speed‐up rate during several years based on 1171 images. Three wind speed‐up cases have been studied in detail using the mesoscale Weather, Research, and Forecasting (WRF) model with two wind farm parameterizations. At 10 m above sea level, the SAR‐based observations and WRF model compare for most cases, though only when turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) is included in the wind farm parameterization. The TKE mixes higher momentum downward in a stable atmosphere, causing surface wind speed‐up near the surface.

    The offshore wind climate in Iceland is examined based on satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR), coastal meteorological station measurements, and results from two atmospheric model data sets, HARMONIE and NORA10. The offshore winds in Iceland are highly influenced by the rugged coastline. Lee effects, gap flow, coastal barrier jets, and atmospheric gravity waves are not only observed in SAR, but are also modeled well from HARMONIE. Offshore meteorological observations are not available, but wind speed and wind direction measurements from coastal meteorological masts are found to compare well to nearby offshore locations observed by SAR. More than 2500 SAR scenes from the Envisat ASAR wide swath mode are used for wind energy resource estimation. The wind energy potential observed from satellite SAR shows high values above ${1000}\;{Wm}^{ - {2}}$ in coastal regions in the south, east, and west, with lower values in the north. The most promising region for wind energy production is the southwestern coastal region.
