description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Conference object , Preprint 2021Embargo end date: 01 Jan 2021Publisher:Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Funded by:NSF | Sustainable Integration o...NSF| Sustainable Integration of Distributed Energy Resources in Distribution SystemsJiantao Shi; Ye Guo; Lang Tong; Wenchuan Wu; Hongbin Sun;We consider some crucial problems related to the secure and reliable operation of power systems with high renewable penetrations: how much reserve should we procure, how should reserve resources distribute among different locations, and how should we price reserve and charge uncertainty sources. These issues have so far been largely addressed empirically. In this paper, we first develop a scenario-oriented energy-reserve co-optimization model, which directly connects reserve procurement with possible outages and load/renewable power fluctuations without the need for empirical reserve requirements. Accordingly, reserve can be optimally procured system-wide to handle all possible future uncertainties with the minimum expected system total cost. Based on the proposed model, marginal pricing approaches are developed for energy and reserve, respectively. Locational uniform pricing is established for energy, and the similar property is also established for the combination of reserve and re-dispatch. In addition, properties of cost recovery for generators and revenue adequacy for the system operator are also proven. 12 pages, 6 figures

Current prediction models aim at minimizing individual prediction errors but overlook their collective impacts on downstream decision-making. Hence, this paper proposes a safety-aware semi-end-to-end coordinated decision model to bridge the gap from the downstream voltage regulation to the upstream multiple prediction models in a coordinated differential way. The semi-end-to-end model maps the input features to the optimal var decisions via prediction, decision-making, and decision-evaluating layers. It leverages the neural network and the second-order cone program (SOCP) to formulate the stochastic PV/load predictions and the var decision-making/evaluating separately. Then the var decision quality is evaluated via the weighted sum of the power loss for economy and the voltage violation penalty for safety, denoted by regulation loss. Based on the regulation loss and prediction errors, this paper proposes the hybrid loss and hybrid stochastic gradient descent algorithm to back-propagate the gradients of the hybrid loss with respect to multiple predictions for enhancing decision quality. Case studies verify the effectiveness of the proposed model with lower power loss for economy and lower voltage violation rate for safety awareness.

However, challenges remain in the joint optimal dispatch of electricity-gas systems. The dynamic model of the gas network, described by partial differential equations, is complex and computationally demanding for power system operators. Furthermore, information privacy concerns and limited accessibility to detailed gas network models by power system operators necessitate quantifying the equivalent energy storage capacity of gas networks. This paper proposes a multi-port energy storage model with time-varying capacity to represent the dynamic gas state transformation and operational constraints in a compact and intuitive form. The model can be easily integrated into the optimal dispatch problem of the power system. Test cases demonstrate that the proposed model ensures feasible control strategies and significantly reduces the computational burden while maintaining high accuracy in the joint optimal dispatch of electricity-gas systems. In contrast, the existing static equivalent model fails to capture the full flexibility of the gas network and may yield infeasible results. 12 pages, 8 figures

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2021Publisher:Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Weiye Zheng; Wenchuan Wu; Zhigang Li; Hongbin Sun; Yunhe Hou;Robust scheduling for an integrated electricity and heat system (IEHS) is essential to hedge the uncertainties brought by volatile wind power and heat load that could pose critical security threats to IEHS operation. Because of the distributed structure of different energy sectors, their models are managed locally and private information must be protected. In this context, a decoupled solution is favorable for robust IEHS scheduling. However, due to the specific problem structure with a nonseparable Lagrangian, conventional iterative distributed algorithms are not applicable. In this paper, we make the first attempt for distributed robust IEHS scheduling by providing a non-iterative decoupled solution. A two-stage robust model considering electricity and heat uncertainties is formulated, and the inapplicability of conventional algorithms in decoupling this model is analyzed in depth. To facilitate feasible region projection, a network reduction method considering heat uncerntainties is then devised. Finally, an efficient non-iterative decoupled solution is proposed with guaranteed optimality while preserving the operational independence of different energy sectors. Case studies in two test systems validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Various chance constrained approaches are proposed to manage the uncertainties in OPF models. However, most existing approaches assume that the probability distributions of uncertainties are known \emph{a priori}, or consider chance constraint individually. This paper proposes a distributionally robust (DR) joint chance constrained OPF model, which ensures that all the operation constraints are satisfied with a given probability and does not require the assumption on specific probability distributions. An ambiguity set built on the first and second moments is used to model the uncertainties. An optimized Bonferroni approximation (OBA) is first introduced to decompose the DR joint chance constraint into DR individual chance constraints, the resulting OBA formulation is strongly non-convex. Different convex approximations are then proposed to formulate the OBA based DR individual chance constraints as tractable formulations. The proposed convex approximations can be easily extended to incorporate the structural information associated with uncertainties like unimodality and symmetry. Case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed convex approximation methods.

In our method, the uncertain DG outputs and load demands are formulated as stochastic variables following some ambiguous distributions. In addition to the given expectations and variances, the polyhedral uncertainty intervals are employed for the construction of the probability distribution set to restrict possible distributions. Then, we decide the optimal sizes and locations of DG to maximize the total DG hosting capacity under the worst-case probability distributions among this set. Since more information is utilized, our proposed model is expected to be less conservative than the robust optimization method and the traditional distributionally robust method. Using the CVaR (Conditional Value at Risk) reformulation technique and strong duality, we transform the proposed model into an equivalent bilinear matrix inequality problem, and a sequential convex optimization algorithm is applied for solution. Our model guarantees that the probability of security constraints being violated will not exceed a given risk threshold. Besides, the predefined risk level can be tuned to control the conservativeness of our model in a physically meaningful way. The effectiveness and robustness of this proposed method are demonstrated numerically on the two modified IEEE test systems.

To reduce the conservativeness of robust optimization (RO) solutions, this paper proposes a distributionally robust real-time power dispatch model, which characterizes the uncertainty of DG output with the information of first-order and second-order moments. Furthermore, a two-stage scheme, which includes economic dispatch (ED) and corrective control, is incorporated in the model, in which ED optimizes the active power schedule and corrective control strategies of P-Q are generated to eliminate overvoltage problems. The proposed model can be transformed into an equivalent semidefinite programming problem and solved via the delayed constraint generation algorithm. Numerical test results show that the proposed model reduces operational costs and mitigates overvoltage problems significantly compared with the conventional one-stage model. The proposed model also outperforms the conventional RO model by exploiting probability information to achieve statistically optimal dispatch.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Conference object , Preprint 2021Embargo end date: 01 Jan 2021Publisher:Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Funded by:NSF | Sustainable Integration o...NSF| Sustainable Integration of Distributed Energy Resources in Distribution SystemsJiantao Shi; Ye Guo; Lang Tong; Wenchuan Wu; Hongbin Sun;We consider some crucial problems related to the secure and reliable operation of power systems with high renewable penetrations: how much reserve should we procure, how should reserve resources distribute among different locations, and how should we price reserve and charge uncertainty sources.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2017Publisher:Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Authors: Wenchuan Wu; Boming Zhang; Xin Chen; Chenhui Lin;This paper proposes a data-driven method based on distributionally robust optimization to determine the maximum penetration level of distributed generation (DG) for active distribution networks.
