Participants were organized into six topical tracks, based on responses to a series of eight stakeholder engagements held around the world over the past 18 months. The main topics for the work groups were: 1) unit process data development, 2) aggregated process data development, 3) data review and documentation, 4) adaptive LCI approaches, 5) integration and cross-fertilization, and 6) future knowledge management. The discussions, including both the consensus recommendations and the alternative views, where objectively supportable, are documented in the “Shonan Guidance Principles.” The week deepened the appreciation among the different approaches, schools and philosophies related to dataset development, modeling, reporting and review. The conclusions from controversial discussions were drawn in a spirit of inclusion rather than separation.

New technologies and emissions controls have been developed for the production of charcoal, but are not widely used in the industry. The present study seeks to evaluate the potential environmental impact of these new technologies as compared to traditional ones. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Brazilian charcoal produced with different technologies without and with the combustion of the gases in burners or furnaces was carried out. The inclusion of furnaces for the combustion of gases reduces all categories of potential environmental impacts by approximately 90% in both a circular masonry kiln and a rectangular masonry kiln with gas combustion. In the process of producing charcoal (gate-to-gate system boundary), in terms of climate change, the rectangular masonry kiln with gas combustion was approximately 63% less impactful than the circular masonry kiln with gas combustion. In the gate-to-gate analysis, the rectangular masonry kiln with gas combustion presented the best performance when not considering NO2 and SO2. Considering these emissions, there were changes in the impact categories of particulate matter emission and terrestrial acidification, and the circular masonry kiln with gas combustion presented better performance (for cradle-to-gate system boundary). The process in a rectangular masonry kiln without gas combustion presented a greater contribution to the categories of terrestrial impact ecotoxicity (98%), due to the emission of acetic acid especially.

Watanabe; Cássia Maria Lie Ugaya; Antonio Bonomi;The main goal of this study is to suggest quantitative social metrics to evaluate different sugarcane biorefinery systems in Brazil by exploring a novel hybrid approach integrating social life cycle assessment and input-output analysis. Social life cycle assessment is the main methodology for evaluating social aspects based on a life-cycle approach. Using this framework, a hybrid model integrating social life cycle assessment and input-output analysis was introduced to evaluate different social effects of biorefinery scenarios considering workers as the stakeholder category. Job creation, occupational accidents, wage profile, education profile, and gender profile were selected as the main inventory indicators. A case study of three scenarios considering variations in agricultural and industrial technologies (including sugarcane straw recovery and second-generation ethanol production, for instance) was carried out for evaluating present first-generation (1G-basic, 1G-optimized) and future first- and second-generation ethanol production (1G2G). The 1G-basic scenario leads to higher job creation levels over the supply chain mainly because of the influence of agricultural stage whose workers are mostly employed in sugarcane manual operations. On the other hand, 1G-optimized and 1G2G present supply chains are more reliant on the manufacturing, trade, and services sectors whose workers are associated with a lower level of occupational accidents, higher average wages, higher education level, and more participation of women in the work force. The use of a novel hybrid approach integrating social life cycle assessment (SLCA) and input-output analysis (IOA) was useful to quantitatively distinguish the social effects over different present and future sugarcane biorefinery supply chains. As a consequence, this approach is very useful to support decision-making processes aiming to improve the sustainability of sugarcane biorefineries taking social aspects into account.

A case study of three scenarios considering variations in agricultural and industrial technologies (including sugarcane straw recovery and second-generation ethanol production, for instance) was carried out for evaluating present first-generation (1G-basic, 1G-optimized) and future first- and second-generation ethanol production (1G2G). The 1G-basic scenario leads to higher job creation levels over the supply chain mainly because of the influence of agricultural stage whose workers are mostly employed in sugarcane manual operations. On the other hand, 1G-optimized and 1G2G present supply chains are more reliant on the manufacturing, trade, and services sectors whose workers are associated with a lower level of occupational accidents, higher average wages, higher education level, and more participation of women in the work force. The use of a novel hybrid approach integrating social life cycle assessment (SLCA) and input-output analysis (IOA) was useful to quantitatively distinguish the social effects over different present and future sugarcane biorefinery supply chains. As a consequence, this approach is very useful to support decision-making processes aiming to improve the sustainability of sugarcane biorefineries taking social aspects into account.

In this sense, this paper aims to propose a method able to identify best opportunities and thus, focus on the designers’ efforts during the early stages of product development, with major repercussions during the product EoL. To build the method, the Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM) is adopted. The method scope relies on material and energy flows measured in terms of exergy that ultimately depicts for energy efficiency, environmental impact, cost and technical efficiency. By means of a case study, findings challenge common sense by quantitatively showing how small subsystems with 3% of mass can hold nearly 200 times more embodied exergy than another with 50% of the mass and thus, may greatly affect product design and EoL results. Therefore, the adoption of the method may prove useful for establishing easy-to-use design practices that favor green engineering, circular economy and environmental policies. An exergy-based approach would unbiasedly drive Reuse EoL that facilitate Design for the Environment (DfE) as well as focus efforts on specific disassembly technologies.

The purpose of this study is to compare the sustainability of three domestic UCO collection systems: through schools (SCH), door-to-door (DTD), and through urban collection centres (UCC), to determine which systems should be promoted for the collection of UCO in cities in Mediterranean countries. The present paper uses the recent life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) methodology. LCSA is the combination of life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle costing, and social life cycle assessment (S-LCA). Of the three UCO collection systems compared, the results show that UCC presents the best values for sustainability assessment, followed by DTD and finally SCH system, although there are no substantial differences between DTD and SCH. UCC has the best environmental and economic performance but not for social component. DTD and SCH present suitable values for social performance but not for the environmental and economic components. The environmental component improves when the collection points are near to citizens’ homes. Depending on the vehicle used in the collection process, the management costs and efficiency can improve. UCO collection systems that carry out different kind of waste (such as UCC) are more sustainable than those that collect only one type of waste. Regarding the methodology used in this paper, the sustainability assessment proposed is suitable for use in decision making to analyse processes, products or services, even so in social assessment an approach is needed to quantify the indicators. Defining units for sustainability quantification is a difficult task because not all social indicators are quantifiable and comparable; some need to be adapted, raising the subjectivity of the analysis. Research into S-LCA and LCSA is recent; more research is needed in order to improve the methodology.

Recent progress in Life Cycle Impact Assessment highlighted the need to assess the loss of resources’ functional value when assessing the life cycle impacts of resource depletion. In this sense, the main objective of this study is the development of a method for obtaining a substitution index (SI) for wood, quantifying to what extent the wood is substitutable by other available resources for the different functions it can fulfill. The aim of our method is to characterize wood through its functions and inherent properties by using following parameters (availability, price, current usage). As a result, we obtained SI for five functions of wood, classified by country and region. The results showed that wood substitution varies between each of its functions and also for each region. In general, replacing wood with other resources is a challenge for most regions and most functions, with SI usually below 0.5 on a scale from 0 to 1, where 0 indicate that there is no substitution and 1 indicate that the resource can be thoroughly replaced.

Recent progress in Life Cycle Impact Assessment highlighted the need to assess the loss of resources’ functional value when assessing the life cycle impacts of resource depletion. To be able to assess the loss of functional value of resources due to scarcity and depletion, there is a need to assess the potential substitutions among different resources to fulfill the same functionality. The main topics for the work groups were: 1) unit process data development, 2) aggregated process data development, 3) data review and documentation, 4) adaptive LCI approaches, 5) integration and cross-fertilization, and 6) future knowledge management. The discussions, including both the consensus recommendations and the alternative views, where objectively supportable, are documented in the “Shonan Guidance Principles.” The week deepened the appreciation among the different approaches, schools and philosophies related to dataset development, modeling, reporting and review. The conclusions from controversial discussions were drawn in a spirit of inclusion rather than separation.

New technologies and emissions controls have been developed for the production of charcoal, but are not widely used in the industry. The present study seeks to evaluate the potential environmental impact of these new technologies as compared to traditional ones. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Brazilian charcoal produced with different technologies without and with the combustion of the gases in burners or furnaces was carried out. The inclusion of furnaces for the combustion of gases reduces all categories of potential environmental impacts by approximately 90% in both a circular masonry kiln and a rectangular masonry kiln with gas combustion. In the process of producing charcoal (gate-to-gate system boundary), in terms of climate change, the rectangular masonry kiln with gas combustion was approximately 63% less impactful than the circular masonry kiln with gas combustion. In the gate-to-gate analysis, the rectangular masonry kiln with gas combustion presented the best performance when not considering NO2 and SO2. Considering these emissions, there were changes in the impact categories of particulate matter emission and terrestrial acidification, and the circular masonry kiln with gas combustion presented better performance (for cradle-to-gate system boundary). The process in a rectangular masonry kiln without gas combustion presented a greater contribution to the categories of terrestrial impact ecotoxicity (98%), due to the emission of acetic acid especially.

Social life cycle assessment is the main methodology for evaluating social aspects based on a life-cycle approach. Using this framework, a hybrid model integrating social life cycle assessment and input-output analysis was introduced to evaluate different social effects of biorefinery scenarios considering workers as the stakeholder category. Job creation, occupational accidents, wage profile, education profile, and gender profile were selected as the main inventory indicators. A case study of three scenarios considering variations in agricultural and industrial technologies (including sugarcane straw recovery and second-generation ethanol production, for instance) was carried out for evaluating present first-generation (1G-basic, 1G-optimized) and future first- and second-generation ethanol production (1G2G). The 1G-basic scenario leads to higher job creation levels over the supply chain mainly because of the influence of agricultural stage whose workers are mostly employed in sugarcane manual operations. On the other hand, 1G-optimized and 1G2G present supply chains are more reliant on the manufacturing, trade, and services sectors whose workers are associated with a lower level of occupational accidents, higher average wages, higher education level, and more participation of women in the work force. The use of a novel hybrid approach integrating social life cycle assessment (SLCA) and input-output analysis (IOA) was useful to quantitatively distinguish the social effects over different present and future sugarcane biorefinery supply chains. As a consequence, this approach is very useful to support decision-making processes aiming to improve the sustainability of sugarcane biorefineries taking social aspects into account.

The methods associated with the available disassembly technology rarely addresses non-destructive disassembly approach that favor reuse as an end-of-life (EoL) strategy. In this sense, this paper aims to propose a method able to identify best opportunities and thus, focus on the designers’ efforts during the early stages of product development, with major repercussions during the product EoL. To build the method, the Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM) is adopted. The method scope relies on material and energy flows measured in terms of exergy that ultimately depicts for energy efficiency, environmental impact, cost and technical efficiency. By means of a case study, findings challenge common sense by quantitatively showing how small subsystems with 3% of mass can hold nearly 200 times more embodied exergy than another with 50% of the mass and thus, may greatly affect product design and EoL results. Therefore, the adoption of the method may prove useful for establishing easy-to-use design practices that favor green engineering, circular economy and environmental policies. An exergy-based approach would unbiasedly drive Reuse EoL that facilitate Design for the Environment (DfE) as well as focus efforts on specific disassembly technologies.

The purpose of this study is to compare the sustainability of three domestic UCO collection systems: through schools (SCH), door-to-door (DTD), and through urban collection centres (UCC), to determine which systems should be promoted for the collection of UCO in cities in Mediterranean countries. The present paper uses the recent life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) methodology. LCSA is the combination of life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle costing, and social life cycle assessment (S-LCA). Of the three UCO collection systems compared, the results show that UCC presents the best values for sustainability assessment, followed by DTD and finally SCH system, although there are no substantial differences between DTD and SCH. UCC has the best environmental and economic performance but not for social component. DTD and SCH present suitable values for social performance but not for the environmental and economic components. The environmental component improves when the collection points are near to citizens’ homes. Depending on the vehicle used in the collection process, the management costs and efficiency can improve. UCO collection systems that carry out different kind of waste (such as UCC) are more sustainable than those that collect only one type of waste. Regarding the methodology used in this paper, the sustainability assessment proposed is suitable for use in decision making to analyse processes, products or services, even so in social assessment an approach is needed to quantify the indicators. Defining units for sustainability quantification is a difficult task because not all social indicators are quantifiable and comparable; some need to be adapted, raising the subjectivity of the analysis. Research into S-LCA and LCSA is recent; more research is needed in order to improve the methodology.

Recent progress in Life Cycle Impact Assessment highlighted the need to assess the loss of resources’ functional value when assessing the life cycle impacts of resource depletion. To be able to assess the loss of functional value of resources due to scarcity and depletion, there is a need to assess the potential substitutions among different resources to fulfill the same functionality. In this sense, the main objective of this study is the development of a method for obtaining a substitution index (SI) for wood, quantifying to what extent the wood is substitutable by other available resources for the different functions it can fulfill. The aim of our method is to characterize wood through its functions and inherent properties by using following parameters (availability, price, current usage). As a result, we obtained SI for five functions of wood, classified by country and region. The results showed that wood substitution varies between each of its functions and also for each region. In general, replacing wood with other resources is a challenge for most regions and most functions, with SI usually below 0.5 on a scale from 0 to 1, where 0 indicate that there is no substitution and 1 indicate that the resource can be thoroughly replaced.
