Most railway embankments are aged around 150 years old and the percentage of disruption reports that feature them is frequently higher than other types of railway infrastructure. Remarkable works have been done to understand embankment deterioration and develop asset modelling. Nevertheless, they do not represent a sufficient way of managing assets in detail. As a result, reactive approaches combined with proactive ones would improve the whole asset management scenario. To guarantee good system performance, geotechnical asset management (GAM) aims to reduce uncertainty through informed, data driven decisions and optimisation of resources. GAM approaches are cost sensitive. Thus, data driven approaches that utilize existing resources are highly prized. Track geometry data has been routinely collected by Network Rail, over many years, to identify track defects and subsequently plan track maintenance interventions. Additionally, in 2018 Network Rail commissioned AECOM to undertake a study, described in this paper, to investigate the use of track geometry data in the detection of embankment instabilities. In this study, track geometry data for over 1800 embankments were processed and parameters offering the best correlation with embankment movements were identified and used by an algorithm to generate an embankment instability metric. The study successfully demonstrated that the instability of railway embankments is clearly visible in track geometry data and the metric gives an indication of the worsening of track geometry, that is likely due to embankment instability.

(author);This paper presents a general framework for estimating the state and unknown inputs at the level of a system subdomain using a limited number of output measurements, enabling thus the component-based vibration monitoring or control and providing a novel approach to model updating and hybrid testing applications. Under the premise that the system subdomain dynamics are driven by the unknown (i) externally applied inputs and (ii) interface forces, with the latter representing the unmodeled system components, the problem of output-only response prediction at the substructure level can be tailored to a Bayesian input-state estimation context. As such, the solution is recursively obtained by fusing a Reduced Order Model (ROM) of the structural subdomain of interest with the available response measurements via a Bayesian filter. The proposed framework is without loss of generality established on the basis of fixed- and free-interface domain decomposition methods and verified by means of three simulated Wind Turbine (WT) structure applications of increasing complexity. The distortion of turbulence interacting with thick airfoils is analyzed with scale-resolved numerical simulations to elucidate its impact on leading-edge-noise generation and prediction. The effect of the leading-edge geometry is investigated by considering two airfoils with different leading-edge radii subjected to grid-generated turbulence. The velocity field is shown to be altered near the stagnation point, in a region whose extension does not depend on the leading-edge radius. Here, the deformation of large-scale turbulence causes the amplitude of the upwash velocity fluctuations to increase in the low-frequency range of the spectrum because of the blockage exerted by the surface. Conversely, the distortion of small-scale structures leads to an exponential decay of the spectrum at high frequencies due to the alteration of the vorticity field. The prevalence of a distortion mechanism over the other is found to depend on the size of the turbulent structures with respect to the curvilinear length from the stagnation point to the location where surface-pressure fluctuations and pressure gradient peak. This occurs at the curvilinear abscissa where the curvature changes the most. The same high-frequency exponential-decay slope observed for the upwash velocity is retrieved for surface-pressure spectra in the leading-edge region, suggesting that the airfoil unsteady response is induced by the distorted velocity field. This physical mechanism can be accounted for in Amiet's model by using a distorted turbulence spectrum as input and accounting for the increased amplitude of the distorted gust in the aeroacoustic transfer function, retrieving an accurate noise prediction for both airfoils.

Renewable energy is expected to experience epic growth in the coming decade, which is reflected in the record new installations since 2010. Wind energy, in particular, has proved its leading role among sustainable energy production means, by the accelerating rise in total installed capacity and by its consistently increasing trend. Taking a closer look at the history of wind power development, it is obvious that it has always been a matter of engineering taller turbines with longer blades. An increase in the tower height means an increase in the material used, thereby, impacting the initial construction cost and the total energy consumed. In the present study, a numerical investigation is carried out in order to actively compare conventional cylindrical shell towers with lattice towers in terms of material use, robustness and environmental impact. Lattice structures are proved to be equivalently competitive to conventional cylindrical solutions since they can be designed to be robust enough while being a much lighter tower in terms of material use. With detailed design, lattice wind turbine towers can constitute the new generation of wind turbine towers.

Renewable energy is expected to experience epic growth in the coming decade, which is reflected in the record new installations since 2010. Wind energy, in particular, has proved its leading role among sustainable energy production means, by the accelerating rise in total installed capacity and by its consistently increasing trend. Taking a closer look at the history of wind power development, it is obvious that it has always been a matter of engineering taller turbines with longer blades. An increase in the tower height means an increase in the material used, thereby, impacting the initial construction cost and the total energy consumed. In the present study, a numerical investigation is carried out in order to actively compare conventional cylindrical shell towers with lattice towers in terms of material use, robustness and environmental impact. Lattice structures are proved to be equivalently competitive to conventional cylindrical solutions since they can be designed to be robust enough while being a much lighter tower in terms of material use. With detailed design, lattice wind turbine towers can constitute the new generation of wind turbine towers.

Often, 2nd-level space boundary data contained in IFC, are missing or incorrect. To facilitate the connection between BIMs and energy simulation programs, the Common Boundary Intersection Projection (CBIP) algorithm is introduced. CBIP uses the geometric representations of building entities obtained from IFC files to generate the building's 2nd-level space boundary topology. A prototypical implementation of the CBIP algorithm is used in a complex geometry building, as a verification of the capability of the algorithm to properly identify space boundaries.

The optimum combination of energy consumers incl. energy recovery systems is expected to significantly improve the vessels overall energy efficiency. The challenge will be to harmonize the modelling approach from technology providers in a way that component models can be used appropriately for energy modelling on ship level.The results of the simulation of the ship concepts as developed in the 11 application cases will be used for a screening life cycle assessment, using the “well to propeller” concept to properly address the use of alternative fuels. A LCPA (Life Cycle Performance Assessment)-Tool allows for the comparison of different technical solutions taking into account environmental and economic parameters. A suitable way of representing the external costs of air emissions will be integrated in order to be able to fully compare new technical solutions with existing state of the art technologies in ship designs for provision of political recommendations.

Pumps-as-Turbines (PATs) are increasingly used in micro-hydropower applications due to their cost competitiveness that is brought about by lower acquisition, design, operation, and maintenance costs. Despite these, limited research exists that investigates PAT failures. Notably, there is a literature gap concerning cavitation in PATs. As such, this study proposes an improvement to the deviation from the normal distribution (DND) technique to facilitate application in PAT cavitation detection. Probability density functions of vibration signals collected during operation at design speed and various cavitation states are developed and the DND computed using two approaches, i.e., the use of baseline data and the original method, for comparison purposes. Normal probability plots are presented to depict suitability of the two approaches in quantifying the DND. Results show higher deviation when using baseline data, hence, improved detection capabilities with amplification of the slope of the trend line under cavitating conditions when using the proposed DND approach. The proposed method also allows for establishing clear alarm limits for the condition monitoring of PATs in practice. Moreover, the proposed method is validated by application at various PAT operating speeds and cavitation states. The proposed method is found to be responsive, reliable, and independent from operating speed.

In this article, the determination of optimal autoregressive (AR) models for reproducing a predefined target autocovariance function of a random process is addressed. To this end, a novel formulation of the problem is developed. This formulation is linear and generalises the well-known Yule-Walker (Y-W) equations and a recent approach based on restricted AR models (Krenk-Møller approach, K-M). Two main features characterise the introduced formulation: (i) flexibility in the choice for the autocovariance equations employed in the model determination, and (ii) flexibility in the definition of the AR model scheme. Both features were exploited by a genetic algorithm to obtain optimal AR models for the particular case of synthetic generation of homogeneous stationary isotropic turbulence time series. In this article, the determination of optimal autoregressive (AR) models for reproducing a predefined target autocovariance function of a random process is addressed. To this end, a novel formulation of the problem is developed. This formulation is linear and generalises the well-known Yule-Walker (Y-W) equations and a recent approach based on restricted AR models (Krenk-Møller approach, K-M). Two main features characterise the introduced formulation: (i) flexibility in the choice for the autocovariance equations employed in the model determination, and (ii) flexibility in the definition of the AR model scheme. Both features were exploited by a genetic algorithm to obtain optimal AR models for the particular case of synthetic generation of homogeneous stationary isotropic turbulence time series. A recent field of application lies in the adoption of such devices for non-contact vibrational response recordings of structures, allowing high spatial density measurements without the burden of heavy cabling associated with conventional technologies. This, however, is not a straightforward task due to the typically low-amplitude displacement response of structures under ambient operational conditions. A novel framework, namely Magnified Tracking (MT), is proposed herein to overcome this limitation through the synergistic use of two computer vision techniques. The recently proposed phase-based motion magnification (PBMM) framework, for amplifying motion in a video within a defined frequency band, is coupled with motion tracking by means of particle tracking velocimetry (PTV). An experimental campaign was conducted to validate a proof-of-concept, where the dynamic response of a shear frame was measured both by conventional sensors as well as a video camera setup, and cross-compared to prove the feasibility of the proposed non-contact approach. The methodology was explored both in 2D and 3D configurations, with PTV revealing a powerful tool for the measurement of perceptible motion. When MT is utilized for tracking “imperceptible” structural responses (i.e., below PTV sensitivity), via the use of PBMM around the resonant frequencies of the structure, the amplified motion reveals the operational deflection shapes, which are otherwise intractable. The modal results extracted from the magnified videos, using PTV, demonstrate MT to be a viable non-contact alternative for 3D modal identification with the benefit of a spatially dense measurement grid.

Most railway embankments are aged around 150 years old and the percentage of disruption reports that feature them is frequently higher than other types of railway infrastructure. Remarkable works have been done to understand embankment deterioration and develop asset modelling. Nevertheless, they do not represent a sufficient way of managing assets in detail. As a result, reactive approaches combined with proactive ones would improve the whole asset management scenario. To guarantee good system performance, geotechnical asset management (GAM) aims to reduce uncertainty through informed, data driven decisions and optimisation of resources. GAM approaches are cost sensitive. Thus, data driven approaches that utilize existing resources are highly prized. Track geometry data has been routinely collected by Network Rail, over many years, to identify track defects and subsequently plan track maintenance interventions. Additionally, in 2018 Network Rail commissioned AECOM to undertake a study, described in this paper, to investigate the use of track geometry data in the detection of embankment instabilities. In this study, track geometry data for over 1800 embankments were processed and parameters offering the best correlation with embankment movements were identified and used by an algorithm to generate an embankment instability metric. The study successfully demonstrated that the instability of railway embankments is clearly visible in track geometry data and the metric gives an indication of the worsening of track geometry, that is likely due to embankment instability.

As such, the solution is recursively obtained by fusing a Reduced Order Model (ROM) of the structural subdomain of interest with the available response measurements via a Bayesian filter. The proposed framework is without loss of generality established on the basis of fixed- and free-interface domain decomposition methods and verified by means of three simulated Wind Turbine (WT) structure applications of increasing complexity. The distortion of turbulence interacting with thick airfoils is analyzed with scale-resolved numerical simulations to elucidate its impact on leading-edge-noise generation and prediction. The effect of the leading-edge geometry is investigated by considering two airfoils with different leading-edge radii subjected to grid-generated turbulence. The velocity field is shown to be altered near the stagnation point, in a region whose extension does not depend on the leading-edge radius. Here, the deformation of large-scale turbulence causes the amplitude of the upwash velocity fluctuations to increase in the low-frequency range of the spectrum because of the blockage exerted by the surface. Conversely, the distortion of small-scale structures leads to an exponential decay of the spectrum at high frequencies due to the alteration of the vorticity field. The prevalence of a distortion mechanism over the other is found to depend on the size of the turbulent structures with respect to the curvilinear length from the stagnation point to the location where surface-pressure fluctuations and pressure gradient peak. This occurs at the curvilinear abscissa where the curvature changes the most. The same high-frequency exponential-decay slope observed for the upwash velocity is retrieved for surface-pressure spectra in the leading-edge region, suggesting that the airfoil unsteady response is induced by the distorted velocity field. This physical mechanism can be accounted for in Amiet's model by using a distorted turbulence spectrum as input and accounting for the increased amplitude of the distorted gust in the aeroacoustic transfer function, retrieving an accurate noise prediction for both airfoils.

Renewable energy is expected to experience epic growth in the coming decade, which is reflected in the record new installations since 2010. Wind energy, in particular, has proved its leading role among sustainable energy production means, by the accelerating rise in total installed capacity and by its consistently increasing trend. Taking a closer look at the history of wind power development, it is obvious that it has always been a matter of engineering taller turbines with longer blades. An increase in the tower height means an increase in the material used, thereby, impacting the initial construction cost and the total energy consumed. In the present study, a numerical investigation is carried out in order to actively compare conventional cylindrical shell towers with lattice towers in terms of material use, robustness and environmental impact. Lattice structures are proved to be equivalently competitive to conventional cylindrical solutions since they can be designed to be robust enough while being a much lighter tower in terms of material use. With detailed design, lattice wind turbine towers can constitute the new generation of wind turbine towers.

The optimum combination of energy consumers incl. energy recovery systems is expected to significantly improve the vessels overall energy efficiency. The challenge will be to harmonize the modelling approach from technology providers in a way that component models can be used appropriately for energy modelling on ship level.The results of the simulation of the ship concepts as developed in the 11 application cases will be used for a screening life cycle assessment, using the “well to propeller” concept to properly address the use of alternative fuels. A LCPA (Life Cycle Performance Assessment)-Tool allows for the comparison of different technical solutions taking into account environmental and economic parameters. A suitable way of representing the external costs of air emissions will be integrated in order to be able to fully compare new technical solutions with existing state of the art technologies in ship designs for provision of political recommendations.

Pumps-as-Turbines (PATs) are increasingly used in micro-hydropower applications due to their cost competitiveness that is brought about by lower acquisition, design, operation, and maintenance costs. Despite these, limited research exists that investigates PAT failures. Notably, there is a literature gap concerning cavitation in PATs. As such, this study proposes an improvement to the deviation from the normal distribution (DND) technique to facilitate application in PAT cavitation detection. Probability density functions of vibration signals collected during operation at design speed and various cavitation states are developed and the DND computed using two approaches, i.e., the use of baseline data and the original method, for comparison purposes. Normal probability plots are presented to depict suitability of the two approaches in quantifying the DND. Results show higher deviation when using baseline data, hence, improved detection capabilities with amplification of the slope of the trend line under cavitating conditions when using the proposed DND approach. The proposed method also allows for establishing clear alarm limits for the condition monitoring of PATs in practice. Moreover, the proposed method is validated by application at various PAT operating speeds and cavitation states. The proposed method is found to be responsive, reliable, and independent from operating speed.

To this end, a novel formulation of the problem is developed. This formulation is linear and generalises the well-known Yule-Walker (Y-W) equations and a recent approach based on restricted AR models (Krenk-Møller approach, K-M). Two main features characterise the introduced formulation: (i) flexibility in the choice for the autocovariance equations employed in the model determination, and (ii) flexibility in the definition of the AR model scheme. Both features were exploited by a genetic algorithm to obtain optimal AR models for the particular case of synthetic generation of homogeneous stationary isotropic turbulence time series. The obtained models improved those obtained with the Y-W and K-M approaches for the same model parsimony in terms of the global fitting of the target autocovariance function. Implications for the reproduced spectra are also discussed. The formulation for the multivariate case is also presented, highlighting the causes behind some computational bottlenecks.

A recent field of application lies in the adoption of such devices for non-contact vibrational response recordings of structures, allowing high spatial density measurements without the burden of heavy cabling associated with conventional technologies. This, however, is not a straightforward task due to the typically low-amplitude displacement response of structures under ambient operational conditions. A novel framework, namely Magnified Tracking (MT), is proposed herein to overcome this limitation through the synergistic use of two computer vision techniques. The recently proposed phase-based motion magnification (PBMM) framework, for amplifying motion in a video within a defined frequency band, is coupled with motion tracking by means of particle tracking velocimetry (PTV). An experimental campaign was conducted to validate a proof-of-concept, where the dynamic response of a shear frame was measured both by conventional sensors as well as a video camera setup, and cross-compared to prove the feasibility of the proposed non-contact approach. The methodology was explored both in 2D and 3D configurations, with PTV revealing a powerful tool for the measurement of perceptible motion. When MT is utilized for tracking “imperceptible” structural responses (i.e., below PTV sensitivity), via the use of PBMM around the resonant frequencies of the structure, the amplified motion reveals the operational deflection shapes, which are otherwise intractable. The modal results extracted from the magnified videos, using PTV, demonstrate MT to be a viable non-contact alternative for 3D modal identification with the benefit of a spatially dense measurement grid.
