description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object , Article 2011 GermanyPublisher:ETA-Florence Renewable Energies Gehrmann, H. J.; Kolb, T.; Seifert, H.; Waibel, P.; Matthes, J.; Keller, H.; Leibfried, T.;With an increasing share of regenerative wind and solar energy in electricity supply, the aspect of load flexibility will gain importance, i.e. there is an increasing need for buffer capacities and / or power plants must be able to react more flexibly to changes of the demand. As an alternative or in addition to the new construction of peakload power plants (pump storage systems, gas power plants), load-flexible dust burner technologies can be used in existing incinerators to increase the load flexibility and the fuel flexibility when using especially local regenerative fuel sources. Flexibility of the burner concept means an increase in changing fuel composition and non-stationary operation, which may cause changes of the combustion behavior and, hence, of the emission behavior. Flexibility in fuel sources changes the combustion and emission behavior, too, especially with regard to low rank fuels with high ash contents containing chlorine and alkali species. To control these non-stationary processes in the burner and downstream boiler area for an efficient operation, contact-free optical measurement methods are applied in addition to the measurement systems existing in the furnace chamber and furthermore control methods based on computational intelligence. Proceedings of the 19th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, 6-10 June 2011, Berlin, Germany, pp. 1334-1337

Such information is essential if upgrading to a liquid fuel or to platform chemicals is intended. Furthermore, water and inorganic elements have to be taken into account for the catalyst selection. In this work, two bio-oils from wheat straw and beech wood were characterized by different techniques. Both were composed by a light and a heavy phase separately analyzed. The water content of the fractions differed over a wide range between 14.4 and 56.7 wt.% and therefore also the HHV (between 28.5 and 9.2 MJ/Kg). Both phases showed very low content of sulfur (<0.4 wt.%), which can have influence the lifetime of the catalyst. The 1H-NMR integration showed higher values in the regions of alkanes, carboxylic acid or keto-groups, and hetero-(aromatics) for both heavy phases, while light phases showed higher values in the water, O-H exchanging and carbohydrates region. So the heavy phases seem to be a good basis if phenols and its derivatives are expected and the light phases if alcohols are of interest. These results show that the bio-oils composition is essential for upgrading reactions, impacting on the products as well as on the choice of the catalyst. W.; Biollaz, S. M. A.; Mai, R.; Leibold, H.;To increase the efficiency of biomass integrated gasification fuel cell (BIGFC) systems, hot gas cleaning technologies are essential. Hot gas filters operating at temperatures higher than 800°C enable not only the application of high temperature sorption materials to eliminate contaminants but also the use of tar reformers downstream of the filtration unit at high temperatures without the need of reheating the product gas. In the progress of the hot gas filter (HGF) development, two long term tests of 450 and 1150 hours were conducted with a HGF unit operating at 450°C at ambient pressure. Ceramic filter candles installed in horizontal position were used to filter fuel gas with sticky particles produced by an updraft gasifier operated with wood pellets. The ceramic filter elements were recleaned with a coupled pressure pulse (CPP) method instead of a conventional jet pulse system. The results are very promising showing that for various process modes, stable operation of the HGF is possible.
