    In this paper, parametric sensibility effects on dynamics of the induction generator in the presence of local perturbations are investigated. The study is conducted in a 3x2 MW wind park dealing with abc, qd0 and qd reduced order, induction generator model respectively, and with fluxes as state variables. Results show that together to time domain analysis, very important dynamic characteristics need to be taken into account for modern wind turbine control and power electronic application.

    In recent grid codes for wind power integration, wind turbines are required to stay connected during grid faults even when the grid voltage drops down to zero; and also to inject reactive current in proportion to the voltage drop. However, a physical fact, instability of grid-connected converters during current injection to very low (close to zero) voltage faults, has been omitted, i.e., failed to be noticed in the previous wind power studies and grid code revisions. In this paper, the instability of grid side converters of wind turbines defined as loss of synchronism (LOS), where the wind turbines lose synchronism with the grid fundamental frequency (e.g., 50 Hz) during very deep voltage sags, is explored with its theory, analyzed and a novel stability solution based on PLL frequency is proposed; and both are verified with power system simulations and by experiments on a grid-connected converter setup.

    The expected growth in distributed generation will significantly affect the operation and control of today's distribution grids. Being confronted with fast fluctuating power from distributed generations, the assurance of a reliable service (grid stability, avoidance of energy losses) and the quality of the power may become costly. In this light, Smart Grids may provide an answer towards a more active and efficient electrical network. The EU project SmartC2Net aims to enable smart grid operations over imperfect, heterogeneous general purpose networks, which poses a significant challenge to the reliability due to the stochastic behavior found in such networks. Therefore, key concepts are presented in this paper targeting the support of proper smart grid control in these network environments and its Real-Time Hardware-In-the Loop (HIL) verification. An overview on the required Information and Communication Technology (ICT) architecture and its functionality is provided and a description of a relevant use case that deals with voltage control on medium and low voltage networks along its evaluation approach on an experimental test bed is detailed.

    The cryogenic carbon capture (CCC) process is a promising post-combustion CO2 removal method. This method is very novel compared with conventional and well-developed methods. However, cryogenic carbon capture is not yet commercially available despite its techno-economic benefits. Thus, a model-based design approach for this process can provide valuable information. This paper will first introduce the cryogenic carbon capture process. Then, a comprehensive literature overview that focuses on different methods for modeling the process at the component level will be given. The modelling methods which are deemed most effective are presented more in depth for each of the key system components. These methods are compared with each other in terms of complexity and accuracy and the simplest methods with an acceptable level of precision for modelling a specific component in the CCC process are recommended. Furthermore, potential research areas in modeling and simulation of the CCC process are also highlighted.

    Due to limited bandwidth and high delays in access to Smart Meter measurements, it is not possible in most cases to access measurements from the complete set of smart meters in a low-voltage grid area for distribution grid monitoring. Distribution system state estimation can be performed based on measurements of voltage and active and reactive power from a subset of selected smart meters. Increasing the number of selected smart meters will, on the one hand, increase the accuracy of distribution system state estimation, while on the other hand, it will degrade timeliness of the monitoring data. This paper proposes to utilize part of the idle time of the legacy periodic smart meter data collection for access to measurements from the subset of selected smart meters for distribution system state estimation. It subsequently proposes a methodology on how to quantitatively analyze this trade-off. The methodology is applied to an example LV grid area with 20 customers using a weighted least square state estimation with support of pseudo-measurements obtained during the regular smart meter collection cycle.

    In this paper, we analyze the generation, storage and transmission expansion of the isolated power system of Las Palmas (Spain) for 2050. This power system comprises two isolated systems: Lanzarote-Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. The generating, storage and transmission capacity to be built is determined by solving a two-stage stochastic investment model taking into account different long-term uncertain parameters: investment costs of immature technologies of power production and storage, annual demand growth, number of electric vehicles, rooftop solar penetration and natural gas prices. The possibility of linking together the isolated power systems of Lanzarote-Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria for reaching a higher penetration of renewable units is also considered. The operation of the power system is simulated by considering the day-ahead energy and reserve capacity markets. The variability of the hourly available wind and solar power, and the demand level are modeled by using a set of characteristic days to represent the target year. The performance of the resulting power system is assessed by conducting an out-of-sample analysis using the AC model of the power system. The numerical results show that a future configuration of Las Palmas power system mainly based on solar and wind power units can be achieved with the support of gas units and storage.

    The energy generation paradigm is shifting from centralized fossil-fuel-based generation to distributed-based renewable generation. Thus, hybrid residential energy systems based on wind turbines, PV panels and/or micro-turbines are gaining more and more terrain. Nevertheless, such a system needs to be coupled with an energy storage solution, most often a battery, in order to mitigate its power generation variability and to ensure a stable and reliable operation. In this work, two power and energy management strategies for a hybrid residential PV-wind system with battery energy storage were evaluated. Simple but customized performance models for PV modules and a small wind turbine have been developed; furthermore the models have been parameterized based on real-life time-series for irradiance and wind speed, characteristic for a site in Denmark. The stress to which the battery was subjected, while providing the two energy management strategies, was also quantified.

    This paper proposes a hierarchical coordinated control strategy for PV inverters to keep voltages in low-voltage (LV) distribution grids within specified limits. The top layer of the proposed architecture consists of the designed automatic voltage regulation (AVR) application, which has access to voltage measurements and grid parameters from the LV distribution grid, both current and historical. The AVR application solves a constrained optimization problem, which provides a set of local control set-points that bring the voltage across the grid within bounds. The middle layer consists of a local Volt/VAR controller, which is adjusted by the AVR app, while the bottom layer is the inner-loop controller of the PV inverter. The proposed method not only improves the voltage quality in the grid but also manages the reactive power outputs of PV inverters efficiently. A digital twin of the cyber-physical system has also been employed that interacts with the control system to ensure its appropriate operation. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is demonstrated on a representative low-voltage feeder located in Denmark.

    The increased penetration of Renewable Energy Generation (ReGen) plants in future power systems poses several challenges to the stability of the entire system. In future green energy rich power systems, the responsibility for providing ancillary services will be shifted from conventional power plants towards ReGen plants, such as wind and photovoltaic power plants. Frequency control support from the Wind Power Plants (WPPs) is one of the crucial ancillary services in order to preserve operational stability in case of grid disturbances. Among other requirements, the ability to provide fast frequency control support from ReGen plants will highly depend on the underlying communication infrastructure that allows an exchange of information between different ReGen plants and the control centers. This paper, therefore, focuses on the evaluation of the impact of communication and the related aspects to provide online frequency control support from ReGen (with special focus on WPP). The performance evaluation is based on an aggregated WPP model that is integrated into a generic power system model. This generic power system model is specifically designed to assess the ancillary services in a relatively simple yet relevant environment. Several case studies with different wind speeds at a particular wind-power penetration level and communication scenarios are considered to evaluate the performance of power system frequency response. The article provides the Transmission System Operator (TSO) and other communication engineers insights into the importance and various aspects of communication infrastructure for general service coordination between WPPs and specifically primary frequency control coordination from WPPs in future power systems.

    Emphasis in this article is on variable speed wind turbines (VSWTs) capability to provide short-term overproduction and better understanding of VSWTs' mechanical and electrical limits to deliver such support. VSWTs' short-term overproduction capability is of primary concern for the transmission system operators (TSOs) in the process of restoring critical situations during large frequency excursions in power systems with high wind power penetration.This study is conducted on a simplified generic model for VSWTs with full scale power converter (Type IV), which includes several adjustments and extensions of the Type IV standard wind turbine model proposed by the IEC Committee in IEC 61400-27-1. This modified standard model is able to account for dynamic features relevant for integrating active power ancillary services in wind power plants, such as frequency support capabilities.The performance of VSWTs during short-term overproduction is assessed and discussed by means of simulations for different wind speed levels, overproduction percentages and durations. The results show that the capability of VSWTs providing short-term overproduction to the grid strongly depends on the initial pre-overproduction conditions.
