    Abstract. This paper analyses several energy system scenarios towards 2050 for the North Sea region. With focus on offshore wind power, the impacts of meshed offshore grid and sector coupling are studied. First, a project-based scenario, where each offshore wind power plant is connected individually to onshore, is compared to a meshed grid scenario. Both the amount of offshore wind installed and the level of curtailment are assessed. Then, these results are compared to a scenario with sector coupling included. The results show that while the introduction of a meshed grid can increase the amount of offshore wind installed towards 2050, sector coupling is expected to be a more important driver for increasing offshore wind installations. In addition, sector coupling can significantly decrease the level of offshore wind curtailment.

    This paper proposes a mathematical model to simulate Day-ahead markets of large-scale multi-energy systems with high share of renewable energy. Furthermore, it analyses the importance of including unit commitment when performing such analysis. The results of the case study, which is performed for the North Sea region, show the influence of massive renewable penetration in the energy sector and increasing electrification of the district heating sector towards 2050, and how this impacts the role of other energy sources such as thermal and hydro. The penetration of wind and solar is likely to challenge the need for balancing in the system as well as the profitability of thermal units. The degree of influence of the unit commitment approach is found to be dependent on the configuration of the energy system. Overall, including unit commitment constraints with integer variables leads to more realistic behaviour of the units, at the cost of increasing considerably the computational time. Relaxing integer variables reduces significantly the computational time, without highly compromising the accuracy of the results. The proposed model, together with the insights from the study case, can be specially useful for system operators for optimal operational planning.

    With the increase in distributed generation, the demand-only nature of many secondary substation nodes in medium voltage networks is becoming a mix of temporally varying consumption and generation with significant stochastic components. Traditional planning, however, has often assumed that the maximum demands of all connected substations are fully coincident, and in cases where there is local generation, the conditions of maximum consumption and minimum generation, and maximum generation and minimum consumption are checked, again assuming unity coincidence. Statistical modelling is used in this paper to produce network solutions that optimize investment, running and interruption costs, assessed from a societal perspective. The decoupled utilization of expected consumption profiles and stochastic generation models enables a more detailed estimation of the driving parameters using the Monte Carlo simulation method. A planning algorithm that optimally places backup connections and three layers of switching has, for real-scale distribution networks, to make millions of iterations within iterations to form a solution, and therefore cannot computationally afford millions of parallel load flows in each iteration. The interface that decouples the full statistical modelling of the combinatorial challenge of prosumer nodes with such a planning algorithm is the main offering of this paper.

    Abstract This paper presents a validation of atmospheric reanalysis data sets for simulating onshore wind generation time series for large-scale energy system studies. The three reanalyses are the ERA5, the New European Wind Atlas (NEWA) and DTU’s previous generation European-level atmospheric reanalysis (EIWR). An optional scaling is applied to match the microscale mean wind speeds reported in the Global Wind Atlas version 2 (GWA2). This mean wind speed scaling is used to account for the effects of terrain on the wind speed distributions. The European wind power fleet for 2015–2018 is simulated, with commissioning of new wind power plants (WPPs) considered for each year. A generic wake model is implemented to include wake losses that are layout agnostic; the wake model captures the expected wake losses as function of wind speed given the technical characteristics of the WPP. We validate both point measurement wind speeds and generation time-series aggregated at the country-level. Wind measurements from 32 tall meteorological masts are used to validate the wind speed, while power production for four years from twelve European countries is used to validate the simulated country-level power production. Various metrics are used to rank the models according to the variables of interest: descriptive statistics, distributions, daily patterns, auto-correlation and spatial-correlation. We find that NEWA outperforms ERA5 and EIWR for the simulated wind speed, but, as expected, no model is able to fully describe the auto-correlation function of the wind speed at a single point. The mean wind speed scaling is found to be necessary to match the distribution of generation on country-level, with NEWA-GWA2 and ERA5-GWA2 showing highest accuracy and precision for simulating large-scale wind generation time-series.

    Abstract The effect of wind power on the electric power system is becoming increasingly important as more wind power is installed. This paper presents a Vector-Autoregressive-To-Anything (VARTA) process with a time-dependent intercept to model wind speeds in multiple locations. The model considers both temporal and spatial dependency structures in detail. It can be used in Monte Carlo simulations to assess the risk of very high or low wind speeds occurring in multiple locations at the same time and during consecutive hours. The long term simulation and short term forecasting results are assessed using measurements from 21 locations in Finland. A discussion on the applicability of the presented wind speed simulation method for the risk assessment of power systems is given.

    Hydrogen can be key in the energy system transition. We investigate the role of offshore hydrogen generation in a future integrated energy system, and its interaction with other system elements. By performing energy system optimisation in a model application of the Northern-central European energy system and the North Sea offshore grid towards 2050, we find that offshore hydrogen generation may likely only play a limited role, and that offshore wind energy has higher value when sent to shore in the form of electricity. Forcing all hydrogen generation offshore would lead to increased energy system costs (9-28 b\EUR2016/year by 2045). Under the assumed scenario conditions, hydrogen generation - both onshore and offshore - follows solar PV generation patterns. Combined with hydrogen storage, this is the most cost-effective solution to satisfy future hydrogen demand. Overall, we find that the role of future offshore hydrogen generation should not simply be derived from minimizing costs for the offshore sub-system, but by also considering the value that such generation would create for the whole integrated energy system. Based on our results, a stronger political effort to promote the integration of offshore wind in onshore energy markets via electrical connection is called for.

    In future power systems, a large share of the energy will be generated with wind power plants (WPPs) and other renewable energy sources. With the increasing wind power penetration, the variability of the net generation in the system increases. Consequently, it is imperative to be able to assess and model the behavior of the WPP generation in detail. This paper presents an improved methodology for the detailed statistical modeling of wind power generation from multiple new WPPs without measurement data. A vector autoregressive based methodology, which can be applied to long-term Monte Carlo simulations of existing and new WPPs, is proposed. The proposed model improves the performance of the existing methodology and can more accurately analyze the temporal correlation structure of aggregated wind generation at the system level. This enables the model to assess the impact of new WPPs on the wind power ramp rates in a power system. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methodology, it is verified against hourly wind speed measurements from six locations in Finland and the aggregated wind power generation from Finland in 2015. Furthermore, a case study analyzing the impact of the geographical distribution of WPPs on wind power ramps is included.

    Abstract. Detailed simulation of wind generation as driven by weather patterns is required to quantify the impact on the electrical grid of the power fluctuations in offshore wind power fleets. This article focuses on studying the power fluctuations of high installation density offshore fleets since they present a growing challenge to the operation and planning of power systems in Europe. The Belgian offshore fleet is studied because it has the highest density of installation in Europe by 2020 and a new extension is expected to start operations by 2028. Different stages of the future installed capacity, turbine technology and turbine storm shutdown technologies are examined and compared. This paper analyzes the distribution of power fluctuations both overall and during high wind speeds. The simulations presented in this article use a new t-student distributed wind speed fluctuations model that captures the missing spectra from the weather reanalysis-simulations. An updated plant storm shutdown model captures the plant behavior of modern high wind speed turbine operation. Detailed wake modeling is carried out using a calibrated engineering wake model in order to capture the Belgium offshore fleet and its tight farm to farm spacing. Long generation time series based on 37 years of historical weather data in 5 min resolution are simulated in order to quantify the extreme fleet-level power fluctuations. The model validation with respect the operational data of the 2018 fleet shows that the methodology presented in this article is able to capture the distribution of wind power and its spatio-temporal characteristics. The results show that the standardized generation ramps are expected to be reduced towards the 4.4 GW of installations due to the larger distances between plants. The most extreme power fluctuations occur during high wind speeds, with large down-ramps occurring in extreme storm events. Extreme down-ramps are mitigated using modern turbine storm shutdown technologies; while extreme up-ramps can be mitigated by the system operator. Extreme ramping events also occur at bellow rated wind speeds, but mitigation of such ramping events remains a challenge for transmission system operators.

    As installed wind generation capacity increases, understanding the effect of wind power on the electric power system is becoming more important. This paper introduces a statistical model that can be used to estimate the variability in wind generation and assess the risk of wind generation contingencies over a large geographical area. The analysis of the installed wind generation capacities is separated from the analysis of the spatial and temporal dependency structures. This enables the study of different future wind power scenarios with varying generation capacities. The model is built on measured hourly wind generation data from Denmark, Estonia, Finland and Sweden. Three scenarios with different geographical distributions of wind power are compared to show the applicability of the model for power system planning. A method for finding the scenario with the minimum variance of the aggregate wind generation is introduced. As the geographical distribution of wind power can be affected by subsidies and other incentives, the presented results can have policy implications. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Modelling and understanding variability in wind generation will be increasingly important in the future with growing shares of wind power in energy systems. Crucially, the modelling needs to be extended to future scenarios, also considering the expected technological development of installations. Reanalysis data is often used in large-scale simulations to model the variability in wind. Wind power plant (WPP) data is also required, but may be only partially available. In this paper, a methodology for estimating missing hub height data is presented, using multiple regression models and large WPP and turbine datasets. The resulting estimated hub heights are presented on a pan-European level, and a scenario with capacity factor development until 2050 for two example countries is shown in detail.

    Abstract. This paper analyses several energy system scenarios towards 2050 for the North Sea region. With focus on offshore wind power, the impacts of meshed offshore grid and sector coupling are studied. First, a project-based scenario, where each offshore wind power plant is connected individually to onshore, is compared to a meshed grid scenario. Both the amount of offshore wind installed and the level of curtailment are assessed. Then, these results are compared to a scenario with sector coupling included. The results show that while the introduction of a meshed grid can increase the amount of offshore wind installed towards 2050, sector coupling is expected to be a more important driver for increasing offshore wind installations. In addition, sector coupling can significantly decrease the level of offshore wind curtailment.

    This paper proposes a mathematical model to simulate Day-ahead markets of large-scale multi-energy systems with high share of renewable energy. Furthermore, it analyses the importance of including unit commitment when performing such analysis. The results of the case study, which is performed for the North Sea region, show the influence of massive renewable penetration in the energy sector and increasing electrification of the district heating sector towards 2050, and how this impacts the role of other energy sources such as thermal and hydro. The penetration of wind and solar is likely to challenge the need for balancing in the system as well as the profitability of thermal units. The degree of influence of the unit commitment approach is found to be dependent on the configuration of the energy system. Overall, including unit commitment constraints with integer variables leads to more realistic behaviour of the units, at the cost of increasing considerably the computational time. Relaxing integer variables reduces significantly the computational time, without highly compromising the accuracy of the results. The proposed model, together with the insights from the study case, can be specially useful for system operators for optimal operational planning.

    With the increase in distributed generation, the demand-only nature of many secondary substation nodes in medium voltage networks is becoming a mix of temporally varying consumption and generation with significant stochastic components. Traditional planning, however, has often assumed that the maximum demands of all connected substations are fully coincident, and in cases where there is local generation, the conditions of maximum consumption and minimum generation, and maximum generation and minimum consumption are checked, again assuming unity coincidence. Statistical modelling is used in this paper to produce network solutions that optimize investment, running and interruption costs, assessed from a societal perspective. The decoupled utilization of expected consumption profiles and stochastic generation models enables a more detailed estimation of the driving parameters using the Monte Carlo simulation method. A planning algorithm that optimally places backup connections and three layers of switching has, for real-scale distribution networks, to make millions of iterations within iterations to form a solution, and therefore cannot computationally afford millions of parallel load flows in each iteration. The interface that decouples the full statistical modelling of the combinatorial challenge of prosumer nodes with such a planning algorithm is the main offering of this paper.

    Abstract This paper presents a validation of atmospheric reanalysis data sets for simulating onshore wind generation time series for large-scale energy system studies. The three reanalyses are the ERA5, the New European Wind Atlas (NEWA) and DTU’s previous generation European-level atmospheric reanalysis (EIWR). An optional scaling is applied to match the microscale mean wind speeds reported in the Global Wind Atlas version 2 (GWA2). This mean wind speed scaling is used to account for the effects of terrain on the wind speed distributions. The European wind power fleet for 2015–2018 is simulated, with commissioning of new wind power plants (WPPs) considered for each year. A generic wake model is implemented to include wake losses that are layout agnostic; the wake model captures the expected wake losses as function of wind speed given the technical characteristics of the WPP. We validate both point measurement wind speeds and generation time-series aggregated at the country-level. Wind measurements from 32 tall meteorological masts are used to validate the wind speed, while power production for four years from twelve European countries is used to validate the simulated country-level power production. Various metrics are used to rank the models according to the variables of interest: descriptive statistics, distributions, daily patterns, auto-correlation and spatial-correlation. We find that NEWA outperforms ERA5 and EIWR for the simulated wind speed, but, as expected, no model is able to fully describe the auto-correlation function of the wind speed at a single point. The mean wind speed scaling is found to be necessary to match the distribution of generation on country-level, with NEWA-GWA2 and ERA5-GWA2 showing highest accuracy and precision for simulating large-scale wind generation time-series.

    Abstract The effect of wind power on the electric power system is becoming increasingly important as more wind power is installed. This paper presents a Vector-Autoregressive-To-Anything (VARTA) process with a time-dependent intercept to model wind speeds in multiple locations. The model considers both temporal and spatial dependency structures in detail. It can be used in Monte Carlo simulations to assess the risk of very high or low wind speeds occurring in multiple locations at the same time and during consecutive hours. The long term simulation and short term forecasting results are assessed using measurements from 21 locations in Finland. A discussion on the applicability of the presented wind speed simulation method for the risk assessment of power systems is given.

    Hydrogen can be key in the energy system transition. We investigate the role of offshore hydrogen generation in a future integrated energy system, and its interaction with other system elements. By performing energy system optimisation in a model application of the Northern-central European energy system and the North Sea offshore grid towards 2050, we find that offshore hydrogen generation may likely only play a limited role, and that offshore wind energy has higher value when sent to shore in the form of electricity. Forcing all hydrogen generation offshore would lead to increased energy system costs (9-28 b\EUR2016/year by 2045). Under the assumed scenario conditions, hydrogen generation - both onshore and offshore - follows solar PV generation patterns. Combined with hydrogen storage, this is the most cost-effective solution to satisfy future hydrogen demand. Overall, we find that the role of future offshore hydrogen generation should not simply be derived from minimizing costs for the offshore sub-system, but by also considering the value that such generation would create for the whole integrated energy system. Based on our results, a stronger political effort to promote the integration of offshore wind in onshore energy markets via electrical connection is called for.

    In future power systems, a large share of the energy will be generated with wind power plants (WPPs) and other renewable energy sources. With the increasing wind power penetration, the variability of the net generation in the system increases. Consequently, it is imperative to be able to assess and model the behavior of the WPP generation in detail. This paper presents an improved methodology for the detailed statistical modeling of wind power generation from multiple new WPPs without measurement data. A vector autoregressive based methodology, which can be applied to long-term Monte Carlo simulations of existing and new WPPs, is proposed. The proposed model improves the performance of the existing methodology and can more accurately analyze the temporal correlation structure of aggregated wind generation at the system level. This enables the model to assess the impact of new WPPs on the wind power ramp rates in a power system. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methodology, it is verified against hourly wind speed measurements from six locations in Finland and the aggregated wind power generation from Finland in 2015. Furthermore, a case study analyzing the impact of the geographical distribution of WPPs on wind power ramps is included.

    Abstract. Detailed simulation of wind generation as driven by weather patterns is required to quantify the impact on the electrical grid of the power fluctuations in offshore wind power fleets. This article focuses on studying the power fluctuations of high installation density offshore fleets since they present a growing challenge to the operation and planning of power systems in Europe. The Belgian offshore fleet is studied because it has the highest density of installation in Europe by 2020 and a new extension is expected to start operations by 2028. Different stages of the future installed capacity, turbine technology and turbine storm shutdown technologies are examined and compared. This paper analyzes the distribution of power fluctuations both overall and during high wind speeds. The simulations presented in this article use a new t-student distributed wind speed fluctuations model that captures the missing spectra from the weather reanalysis-simulations. An updated plant storm shutdown model captures the plant behavior of modern high wind speed turbine operation. Detailed wake modeling is carried out using a calibrated engineering wake model in order to capture the Belgium offshore fleet and its tight farm to farm spacing. Long generation time series based on 37 years of historical weather data in 5 min resolution are simulated in order to quantify the extreme fleet-level power fluctuations. The model validation with respect the operational data of the 2018 fleet shows that the methodology presented in this article is able to capture the distribution of wind power and its spatio-temporal characteristics. The results show that the standardized generation ramps are expected to be reduced towards the 4.4 GW of installations due to the larger distances between plants. The most extreme power fluctuations occur during high wind speeds, with large down-ramps occurring in extreme storm events. Extreme down-ramps are mitigated using modern turbine storm shutdown technologies; while extreme up-ramps can be mitigated by the system operator. Extreme ramping events also occur at bellow rated wind speeds, but mitigation of such ramping events remains a challenge for transmission system operators.

    As installed wind generation capacity increases, understanding the effect of wind power on the electric power system is becoming more important. This paper introduces a statistical model that can be used to estimate the variability in wind generation and assess the risk of wind generation contingencies over a large geographical area. The analysis of the installed wind generation capacities is separated from the analysis of the spatial and temporal dependency structures. This enables the study of different future wind power scenarios with varying generation capacities. The model is built on measured hourly wind generation data from Denmark, Estonia, Finland and Sweden. Three scenarios with different geographical distributions of wind power are compared to show the applicability of the model for power system planning. A method for finding the scenario with the minimum variance of the aggregate wind generation is introduced. As the geographical distribution of wind power can be affected by subsidies and other incentives, the presented results can have policy implications. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Modelling and understanding variability in wind generation will be increasingly important in the future with growing shares of wind power in energy systems. Crucially, the modelling needs to be extended to future scenarios, also considering the expected technological development of installations. Reanalysis data is often used in large-scale simulations to model the variability in wind. Wind power plant (WPP) data is also required, but may be only partially available. In this paper, a methodology for estimating missing hub height data is presented, using multiple regression models and large WPP and turbine datasets. The resulting estimated hub heights are presented on a pan-European level, and a scenario with capacity factor development until 2050 for two example countries is shown in detail.
