A Valenzano in OpenAIRE<p>Time slotted channel hopping provides reliable and deterministic communication in IEEE 802.15.4 mesh networks. Although slotted access is able to lower energy consumption drastically by reducing the duty cycle of the radio module, it usually leads to significant idle listening experienced by receivers, which makes it a sub-optimal solution when ultra low-power wireless is sought for.</p> <p>In this paper a listening suspension mechanism is described, which operates at the MAC layer and is part of a more general approach aimed at cutting down energy consumption by proactively reducing idle listening. Links can be temporarily disabled, that convey slow-rate data streams whose characteristics, e.g., the generation period, are either known in advance to some extent or can be inferred by traffic inspection.</p>

Zunino, Claudio in OpenAIREPerformance of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) based on IEEE 802.15.4 and Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) has been shown to be mostly predictable in typical real-world operating conditions. This is especially true for performance indicators like reliability, power consumption, and latency. This article provides and describes a database (i.e., a set of data acquired with real devices deployed in a real environment) about measurements on OpenMote B devices, implementing the 6TiSCH protocol, made in different experimental configurations. A post-analysis Python script for calculating the above performance indicators from values stored in the database is additional provided. The results obtained by applying the script to the included database were published in [1], which contains more details than those reported in this short presentation of the dataset. Data and software are useful for two main reasons: on the one hand the dataset can be further processed to obtain new performance indices, so as to support, e.g., new ideas about possible protocol modifications; on the other hand, they constitute a simple yet effective example of measurement technique (based on the ping tool and on the accompanying script), which can be customized at will and reused to analyze the performance of other real TSCH installations.

Reliability, power consumption, and latency are the three main performance indicators of wireless sensor networks. Time slotted channel hopping (TSCH) is a promising technique introduced in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard that performs some steps ahead in the direction of the final dream to meet all the previous requirements at the same time. In this article, a simple and effective mathematical model is presented for TSCH that, starting from measurements performed on a real testbed, permits to characterize both the network and the surrounding environment. To better characterize power consumption, an experimental measurement campaign was purposely performed on OpenMote B devices. The model, which was checked against a real 6TiSCH implementation, can be employed to predict network behaviour when configuration parameters are varied, in such a way to satisfy different application contexts. Results show that, when one of the three above indices is privileged, unavoidably there is a worsening of the others.

Among the application layer protocols that support the Internet of Things, a very popular option is MQTT. Its main advantages reside in the inherent simplicity, which makes it suitable for embedded devices too, and the publisher-subscriber model it relies on, which decouples data sources and sinks and enables efficient multicast streaming over the Internet. In this paper a proposal is described that exploits redundant MQTT brokers, deployed in different geographic locations, whose aim is to provide uninterrupted service in spite of failures that may be affecting both the servers executing the middleware and the Internet core. Unlike routing algorithms and protocols, seamless redundancy features zero intervention time, making this solution suitable for critical infrastructures where timings are relevant, like public utilities and some large enterprises.

TSCH is emerging as a reliable access mechanism for wireless sensor networks that, thanks to time slotting, suits the needs of battery-powered devices deployed in industrial scenarios. To take into account the traffic needs of the different links in a mesh network and the related variability, in such a way to prevent instability and butter overruns, overprovisioning can be exploited. It consists in allocating more cells than strictly needed for communication between a node and its neighbors. Unfortunately, overprovisioning in TSCH leads to higher power consumption, because of idle listening. In this paper, two approaches for saving energy are proposed, which temporarily disable listening when no packets are available at the transmitter. Such mechanisms show good backward compatibility with existing TSCH devices, and may coexist with them.

Conserving energy is probably the most important requirement in wireless sensor networks. In TSCH, this goal is obtained by subdividing time into slots, and by switching the communication interface of Internet of Things devices (frequently referred to as motes) off when, at any given time, neither transmissions nor receptions are scheduled for them. Nevertheless, in this kind of networks a considerable amount of energy may still be wasted due to idle listening. This occurs every time a cell is scheduled for frame reception but no transmissions are performed in the related slot and channel. In this paper, Proactive Reduction of Idle Listening (PRIL) techniques are introduced, which aim at lowering the energy wasted because of the above phenomenon. In particular, here we focus on a simplified mechanism that only considers the first hop (PRIL-F). A relevant feature of this kind of techniques is that they cannot worsen performance in any way. On the contrary, in those cases where they can be applied, they may only bring benefits. Results obtained through a simulation campaign show a tangible reduction in energy consumption, especially for periodic traffic generation, in application contexts based on either a star topology (wireless sensor and actuator networks) or a two-level topology (wireless sensor networks).
