description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2024 NetherlandsPublisher:Elsevier BV Raúl Morales; Luis G. Marín; Tomislav Roje; Víctor Caquilpan; Doris Sáez; Alfredo Nuñez;Microgrids (MGs) are sustainable solutions for rural zone electrification that use local renewable resources. However, only careful planning at the start of an MG project can ensure its future optimal operation. In this paper, a novel methodology for MG planning by using the uncertainty characterization of renewable resources and demand is presented. Additionally, a model of electricity consumption is proposed and applied in an isolated rural community. In such communities, consumption patterns typically need to be derived as model inputs because consumption measurements are not available for the planning stage. To obtain these inputs, clustering algorithms based on self-organizing maps (SOMs) and fuzzy c-means are used to classify the families of the community given sociodemographic information obtained via surveys. Subsequently, Markov chains (MCs) are employed to generate consumption patterns based on consumption measurements in some dwellings and surveys applied to the community. The nonlinearities and uncertainties associated with renewable resources and consumption are modeled by using prediction interval (PI) models. These PI models provide the required consumption and generation scenarios for deriving the optimal sizing and topological information to address the MG planning problem. The results of the robust planning approach based on scenarios are useful at the feasibility and design phases of an MG project. The proposed methodology is successfully applied to MG planning for a rural Mapuche community, where a conservative criterion was considered to minimize the investment risk. This criterion corresponds to the worst-case scenario in which the demand increases by 19.9% compared to that of the baseline scenario and a lower energy cost is obtained. However, the net present cost and operational costs increase by 14% and 11.75% compared to those of the baseline scenario, respectively. Railway Engineering

This paper presents the design and evaluation of a dynamic simulator for an ISCC (integrated solar combined cycle) plant. The design of the simulator is based on the phenomenological equations for both a combined cycle plant and a solar plant. The simulator incorporates a regulatory control strategy based on PI (proportional-integral) controllers and was developed in the MATLAB/Simulink® environment. A MPC (model predictive control) strategy established at a supervisory level is presented. The intent of the strategy is to regulate the steam pressure of the superheater of the ISCC plant. The combined use of the simulator and the supervisory control strategy allows for the quantification of the reduction in fuel consumption that can be achieved when integrated solar collectors are used in a combined cycle plant. The ISCC plant simulator is suitable for designing, evaluating and testing control strategies and for planning the integration of solar and combined cycle

Summary This paper proposes a novel simulator of energy consumption patterns that allows designing demand side management (DSM) strategies without economic incentives. The simulator emulates consumers' patterns with and without installed DSM interfaces, based on both actual consumption measurements and surveys applied to the inhabitants of an existing isolated microgrid (Huatacondo, Chile) that has a particular DSM strategy without economic incentives. The simulator uses Markov chains to generate data characterizing consumption patterns without DSM and Bayesian networks for cases in which the users respond to the DSM strategy. Data obtained from the simulator are used to derive a response model of the consumers to the DSM interface, which can be included for the energy management system design. Results show that the implemented strategy can be effective and can generate savings up to 4.45% in diesel consumption for an ideal case where all the dwellings have the interface installed. Microgrids have emerged as an alternative to alleviate increasing energy demands. However, because microgrids are primarily based on nonconventional energy sources (NCES), there is high uncertainty involved in their operation. The aim of this paper is to formulate a robust energy management system (EMS) for a microgrid that uses model predictive control theory as the mathematical framework. The robust EMS (REMS) is formulated using a fuzzy prediction interval model as the prediction model. This model allows us to represent both nonlinear dynamic behavior and uncertainty in the available energy from NCES. In particular, the uncertainty in wind-based energy sources can be represented. In this way, upper and lower boundaries for the trajectories of the available energy are obtained. These boundaries are used to derive a robust formulation of the EMS. The microgrid installed in Huatacondo was used as a test bench. The results indicated that, in comparison with a nonrobust approach, the proposed formulation adequately integrated the uncertainty into the EMS, increasing the robustness of the microgrid by using the diesel generator as spinning reserve. However, the operating costs were also slightly increased due to the additional reserves. This achievement indicates that the proposed REMS is an appropriate alternative for improving the robustness, against the wind power variations, in the operation of microgrids.

Canizares;Demand side management (DSM) programs aim at reducing energy consumption on the demand side, which benefits both consumers and utilities. These programs could also help maintain the critical balance between generation and demand in isolated microgrids. In this case, demand is a treated as a significant uncertainty in the context of dispatching the power resources of a microgrid. Thus, in this paper the uncertainty of consumer response to DSM signals are treated as intervals to represent the corresponding range of variation based on affine arithmetic. The total range of total grid consumption is taken as the sum of intervals in each house, using data obtained through surveys regarding usage of appliances to obtain the individual consumer intervals. The proposed affine arithmetic model is then applied to the prediction of possible range variation in a one-day ahead load forecast. Finally, the presented technique is demonstrated using data obtained in an actual microgrid deployed in Huatacondo, Chile.

Gomez; Jacqueline Llanos; Erwin Rute; Doris Saez; Mark Sumner;Microgrids are the cornerstone for a new model of electrical generation based on renewable resources. Commonly microgrids are controlled with a centralised hierarchical structure, which is inherited from power systems. However, a time-scale separation between traditional fast frequency restoration and slow economic dispatch may be counterproductive in the long run because the slow long-term economic dispatch increases the prediction uncertainty. In an effort to improve the economical operation of microgrids, this work proposes a distributed model predictive control strategy for the operation of isolated microgrids based on a consensus strategy that tackles both the economic dispatch and frequency restoration over the same time-scale. The proposed controller can operate without knowledge of the microgrid's topology: instead, typical local measurements and other information from neighboring generation units are required. Experimental results demonstrate that the controller is robust to load variations and communication issues, but the plug-and-play nature of the system is preserved.

Rural communities usually settle in territories where crop self-consumption is the main source of sustenance. In this context, climate change has made these environments of crop control susceptible to water shortages, impacting crop yields. The implementation of greenhouses has been proposed to address these problems, together with strategies to optimize water and energy consumption. In this study, an energy–water management system based on a model predictive control strategy is proposed. This control strategy consists of a fuzzy optimizer used to determine the optimal consumption from isolated microgrids considering the local resources available. The proposed controller is implemented on two timescales. First, medium-term optimization over one month is used to estimate the necessary water demand required to support crop growth and a high yield. Second, short-term optimization is used to determine the optimal climate conditions inside the greenhouse for managing crop irrigation, refilling the reserve water tank, and providing ventilation. Experiments were conducted to test this approach using a case study of an isolated community. For such a case, energy consumption was reduced, and the irrigation process was optimized. The results indicated that the proposed controller is a viable alternative for implementing intelligent management systems for greenhouses.

To implement an effective DTR system, it is necessary to install monitoring stations along the studied lines, with a tradeoff between accurate estimations and equipment investments. In this paper, a novel heuristic is developed for identifying the number and locations of critical monitoring spans for the implementation of DTR. The heuristic is based on the use of historical-simulated weather data, obtained from a Mesoscale Weather Model, and the statistical analysis of the thermal capacities computed in each span along the line. The heuristic is applied to a line that is 325 km long in North Chile. Optimal monitoring sets, including the number and location of required monitoring stations, are determined for different confidence levels in all line segments. The results are compared to an equidistant monitoring strategy. The proposed heuristic shows robustness since it outperforms the equidistant monitoring strategy in all of the analyzed cases, especially for the longer line segments, which are subject to more complex weather patterns.

In these communities, the energy supply is difficult to predict because it is not always available, is limited according to some schedules and is highly dependent on the consumption behavior of each community member. The first method is proposed to be used before the implementation of the microgrid in the design state, and it includes a household classifier based on a Self Organizing Map (SOM) that provides load patterns by the use of the socio-economic characteristics of the community obtained in a survey. The second method is used after the implementation of the microgrid, in the operation state, and consists of a neural network with on-line learning for the load forecasting. The neural network model is trained with real-data of load and it is designed to stay adapted according to the availability of measured data. Both proposals are tested in a real-life microgrid located in Huatacondo, in northern Chile (project ESUSCON). The results show that the estimated daily load profile of the community can be very well approximated with the SOM classifier. On the other hand, the neural network can forecast the load of the community reasonably well two-days ahead. Both proposals are currently being used in a key module of the energy management system (EMS) in the real microgrid to optimize the real uninterrupted load for 24-hour energy supply service.

Vasquez; Josep M. Guerrero;Islanded microgrids (IMGs) provide a promising solution for reliable and environmentally friendly energy supply to remote areas and off-grid systems. However, the operation management of IMGs is a complex task including the coordination of a variety of distributed energy resources and loads with an intermittent nature in an efficient, stable, reliable, robust, resilient, and self-sufficient manner. In this regard, the energy management system (EMS) of IMGs has been attracting considerable attention during the last years, especially from the economic and emissions point of view. This paper provides an in-depth overview of the EMS optimization problem of IMGs by systematically analyzing the most representative studies. According to the state-of-the-art, the optimization of energy management of IMGs has six main aspects, including framework, time-frame, uncertainty handling approach, optimizer, objective function, and constraints. Each of these aspects is discussed in detail and an up-to-date overview of the existing EMSs for IMGs and future trends is provided. The future trends include the need for improved models, advanced data analytic and forecasting techniques, performance assessment of real-time EMSs in the whole MG’s control hierarchy, fully effective decentralized EMSs, improved communication and cyber security systems, and validations under real conditions. Besides, a comprehensive overview of the widely-used heuristic optimization methods and their application in EMSs of IMGs as well as their advantages and disadvantages are given. It is hoped that this study presents a solid starting point for future researches to improve the EMS of IMGs.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2024 NetherlandsPublisher:Elsevier BV Raúl Morales; Luis G.

Moya; M. Favley; Carlos Suazo-Martinez; P. Jorquera; Marcelo Matus; G. Olguin; Rodrigo Palma-Behnke; Doris Saez; Guillermo Jimenez-Estevez;Dynamic thermal rating (DTR) has been seen as an important tool for planning and operation of power systems, and recently, for smart-grid applications.
