This paper reports the results of a parametric study on the characteristics of electromagnetic (EM) waves propagated due to surface- and cavity-type partial discharges (PD) in materials using the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method. First, the EM waves emitted by such discharges in material samples were measured using a broadband aperture antenna. The measurements showed that the frequency range of the measured signals lay within the ultra-high frequency (UHF) range, suggesting that by carefully choosing the UHF antenna characteristics and its location it might be possible to apply this method to characterize the PD-emitted waves; and hence, to potentially use it to detect and monitor PD defects. In this context, the FDTD simulations were used here to simulate the experimental set-up and examine the propagation characteristics of EM waves emitted by such discharges under uniform and non-uniform test electrode configurations. Using an approximation of the exciting PD current pulses, the electromagnetic field components and the voltage signals captured on a simulated monopole sensor were computed in the time domain at various locations. To explore the limits of the application of the UHF method for detecting these PD types, a parametric study was carried out to clarify how the captured signals are influenced by the PD intensity, the frequency content of the exciting PD pulse, the type of insulation material, the dimensions and the position of the UHF antenna. One of the challenges that needs further investigation is the accurate simulation of the actual PD current pulse produced by such discharges, and hence its frequency content, as there is limited or no measured data available. The results showed that while the amplitude of the captured EM signals increase with the PD intensity, no appreciable signal is detected when the PD pulse width is higher than about 4ns, which may not occur often in unbounded air insulated systems. Equally important is the location and orientation of the UHF sensor—the results showed improved sensitivity when the sensor is vertically polarized and placed in close proximity in the lateral direction with reference to the discharge path.

Power systems under expansion suffer from escalating fault levels that impact equipment integrity, operational flexibility, and the overall security of the system. The fault current limiter (FCL) is one of approaches used by utilities to limit fault current levels and in Dubai Aluminum (DUBAL) series current limiting reactors are currently used. However, more effective (FCL) topologies are sought and, in this paper, a case study is proposed using resistive high temperature superconducting fault current limiters (HT-SFCLs). The application of HT-SCFLs is aimed here at reducing short-circuit currents, while at the same time enhancing the stability and security of the network. The study involves analysis of three-phase and single-line-to-ground faults, evaluation of the voltage levels and total harmonic distortion (THD) levels at busbars considering different fault scenarios, and demonstrates how the use of HT-SFCLs at various locations improves the plant performance. The ideal HT-SFCL model is adopted for this analysis since the aim is to look at the steady-state performance rather than the transient performance. Comparison with series reactor FCLs which are currently installed in the plant show better performance with the proposed HT-SFCL. Voltage profile values and total harmonic content were also compared with measurement data available at the plant.

Electrical breakdown measurements under lightning impulse voltage showed a reduction in breakdown voltage and the time to breakdown with increment in the lime content in the soil. These parameters also increased with curing period for all concentrations of lime of stabilized soil samples. The results show that pH and electrical conductivity of the expansive soil increase as the lime content increases, but decrease with increasing the curing period. Mineralogical and micro-structural analysis has been made by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and by scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The axial strength obtained from unconfined compressive strength (UCS) analysis, the plasma temperature and the electron number density calculated from Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) data tend to increase with increment in lime content as well as the curing period of the lime stabilized soil. Using univariate analysis, the normalized intensity ratio of Ca II peaks from LIBS spectral data are correlated with lime content in the soil samples at various curing periods. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) technique is successful in determining the soil parameters with the help of LIBS spectral data, at different curing periods with an R2 value greater than 0.95 and the percentage RMSE value smaller than 4%.

An experimental investigation is conducted to measure and correlate the impact of the water content on the electrical characteristics of the mineral oil for transformers, particularly the breakdown voltage, the resistivity, and the dielectric dissipation factor. Regression method is carried out to compare the results obtained through laboratory experiments with those predicted using an analytical model. A treatment to reduce water content in oil involving filtration, degassing and dehydration using a SESCO mobile station was applied to the new, regenerated, and used oil samples in service. The breakdown voltage, the resistivity, and the dielectric dissipation factor of the samples were measured. Regression analysis using an exponential model was applied to examine the samples electrical properties. The results show that, after treatment, the breakdown voltage and resistivity increase as the water content decreases, unlike the dielectric dissipation factor which exhibits a decreasing trend. This trend is found to be similar for the three oil samples: new, regenerated, and used. The results of the regression analysis give close agreement with the experimental results for all the samples and all studied characteristics. The model shows strong correlation with high coefficients (>90%).

This paper reports the results of an experimental study that examines the impact of thermal aging on the electrical and chemical properties of insulating oil used in power transformers. Transformer-oil samples were thermally aged over a 5000 h period at different temperatures varying between 80 °C and 140 °C, replicating both normal and extreme operating conditions. Measurements of breakdown voltage, dielectric dissipation factor, acidity, and water content were taken at 500 h intervals. A novel approach of this research is the integration of these electrical and chemical characteristics into a comprehensive exponential regression analysis model. The results indicate that breakdown voltage and resistivity decrease with aging time, whereas the dielectric dissipation factor, acidity, and water content increase with aging time. The degradation trends computed by the proposed model show close correlation with both electrical and chemical properties, with correlation coefficients generally equal to or exceeding 90%, which demonstrates its reliability in predicting aging behavior of transformer oil. This integrated approach offers valuable insights into the combined electrical and chemical degradation processes due to thermal aging and assists in the condition assessment of power transformers.

The effect of thermal aging on the electrical properties of the insulating oil used for transformers has been explored in this experimental work. The numerical results predicted by mathematical model and those measured in the laboratory have been compared by using a regression analysis. Experiments on thermal aging were performed on insulating oil (Borak 22, Nynas, Austria) during a period of time of 5000-h at three different temperatures. First, the transformer oil’s dielectric dissipation factor, the resistivity and the breakdown voltage are measured after every 500 h of aging. Then, polynomial and exponential regression expressions are proposed for modelling the oil’s electrical parameters variations with thermal ageing at different aging temperatures and periods. The results show that after thermal aging, the resistivity and the breakdown voltage decrease with thermal aging, however, the dielectric dissipation factor which increases. This trend is similar for all different aging temperatures. The numerical results show close agreement with the measured results for all the samples and all studied properties. The regression model presents strong correlation with high coefficients (>94%).

This paper reports the results of a parametric study on the characteristics of electromagnetic (EM) waves propagated due to surface- and cavity-type partial discharges (PD) in materials using the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method. First, the EM waves emitted by such discharges in material samples were measured using a broadband aperture antenna. The measurements showed that the frequency range of the measured signals lay within the ultra-high frequency (UHF) range, suggesting that by carefully choosing the UHF antenna characteristics and its location it might be possible to apply this method to characterize the PD-emitted waves; and hence, to potentially use it to detect and monitor PD defects. In this context, the FDTD simulations were used here to simulate the experimental set-up and examine the propagation characteristics of EM waves emitted by such discharges under uniform and non-uniform test electrode configurations. Using an approximation of the exciting PD current pulses, the electromagnetic field components and the voltage signals captured on a simulated monopole sensor were computed in the time domain at various locations. To explore the limits of the application of the UHF method for detecting these PD types, a parametric study was carried out to clarify how the captured signals are influenced by the PD intensity, the frequency content of the exciting PD pulse, the type of insulation material, the dimensions and the position of the UHF antenna. One of the challenges that needs further investigation is the accurate simulation of the actual PD current pulse produced by such discharges, and hence its frequency content, as there is limited or no measured data available. The results showed that while the amplitude of the captured EM signals increase with the PD intensity, no appreciable signal is detected when the PD pulse width is higher than about 4ns, which may not occur often in unbounded air insulated systems. Equally important is the location and orientation of the UHF sensor—the results showed improved sensitivity when the sensor is vertically polarized and placed in close proximity in the lateral direction with reference to the discharge path.

Power systems under expansion suffer from escalating fault levels that impact equipment integrity, operational flexibility, and the overall security of the system. The fault current limiter (FCL) is one of approaches used by utilities to limit fault current levels and in Dubai Aluminum (DUBAL) series current limiting reactors are currently used. However, more effective (FCL) topologies are sought and, in this paper, a case study is proposed using resistive high temperature superconducting fault current limiters (HT-SFCLs). The application of HT-SCFLs is aimed here at reducing short-circuit currents, while at the same time enhancing the stability and security of the network. The study involves analysis of three-phase and single-line-to-ground faults, evaluation of the voltage levels and total harmonic distortion (THD) levels at busbars considering different fault scenarios, and demonstrates how the use of HT-SFCLs at various locations improves the plant performance. The ideal HT-SFCL model is adopted for this analysis since the aim is to look at the steady-state performance rather than the transient performance. Comparison with series reactor FCLs which are currently installed in the plant show better performance with the proposed HT-SFCL. Voltage profile values and total harmonic content were also compared with measurement data available at the plant.

Electrical breakdown measurements under lightning impulse voltage showed a reduction in breakdown voltage and the time to breakdown with increment in the lime content in the soil. These parameters also increased with curing period for all concentrations of lime of stabilized soil samples. The results show that pH and electrical conductivity of the expansive soil increase as the lime content increases, but decrease with increasing the curing period. Mineralogical and micro-structural analysis has been made by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and by scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The axial strength obtained from unconfined compressive strength (UCS) analysis, the plasma temperature and the electron number density calculated from Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) data tend to increase with increment in lime content as well as the curing period of the lime stabilized soil. Using univariate analysis, the normalized intensity ratio of Ca II peaks from LIBS spectral data are correlated with lime content in the soil samples at various curing periods. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) technique is successful in determining the soil parameters with the help of LIBS spectral data, at different curing periods with an R2 value greater than 0.95 and the percentage RMSE value smaller than 4%.

An experimental investigation is conducted to measure and correlate the impact of the water content on the electrical characteristics of the mineral oil for transformers, particularly the breakdown voltage, the resistivity, and the dielectric dissipation factor. Regression method is carried out to compare the results obtained through laboratory experiments with those predicted using an analytical model. A treatment to reduce water content in oil involving filtration, degassing and dehydration using a SESCO mobile station was applied to the new, regenerated, and used oil samples in service. The breakdown voltage, the resistivity, and the dielectric dissipation factor of the samples were measured. Regression analysis using an exponential model was applied to examine the samples electrical properties. The results show that, after treatment, the breakdown voltage and resistivity increase as the water content decreases, unlike the dielectric dissipation factor which exhibits a decreasing trend. This trend is found to be similar for the three oil samples: new, regenerated, and used. The results of the regression analysis give close agreement with the experimental results for all the samples and all studied characteristics. The model shows strong correlation with high coefficients (>90%).

This paper reports the results of an experimental study that examines the impact of thermal aging on the electrical and chemical properties of insulating oil used in power transformers. Transformer-oil samples were thermally aged over a 5000 h period at different temperatures varying between 80 °C and 140 °C, replicating both normal and extreme operating conditions. Measurements of breakdown voltage, dielectric dissipation factor, acidity, and water content were taken at 500 h intervals. A novel approach of this research is the integration of these electrical and chemical characteristics into a comprehensive exponential regression analysis model. The results indicate that breakdown voltage and resistivity decrease with aging time, whereas the dielectric dissipation factor, acidity, and water content increase with aging time. The degradation trends computed by the proposed model show close correlation with both electrical and chemical properties, with correlation coefficients generally equal to or exceeding 90%, which demonstrates its reliability in predicting aging behavior of transformer oil. This integrated approach offers valuable insights into the combined electrical and chemical degradation processes due to thermal aging and assists in the condition assessment of power transformers.
