In this context, agricultural production and healthy nutritious food are linked to soil health and the diversity of their (micro-)biome, which depend on organic carbon materials as an energy and nutrient source. In this paper, we review the evidence showing that carbon-rich soils improve the resilience of human societies to pandemics and other crises. We indicate pathways for how the loss of soil carbon due to farming could be reversed by transformations within our food systems. Moreover, we argue that soil carbon has a strong role to play in enhancing environmental and human health in addition to mitigating and adapting to climate change. This multifaceted role requires a transdisciplinary dialogue and multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Mueller; Carmen Höschen; Claire Chenu; Franz Buegger;AbstractThe largest terrestrial organic carbon pool, carbon in soils, is regulated by an intricate connection between plant carbon inputs, microbial activity, and the soil matrix. This is manifested by how microorganisms, the key players in transforming plant-derived carbon into soil organic carbon, are controlled by the physical arrangement of organic and inorganic soil particles. Here we conduct an incubation of isotopically labelled litter to study effects of soil structure on the fate of litter-derived organic matter. While microbial activity and fungal growth is enhanced in the coarser-textured soil, we show that occlusion of organic matter into aggregates and formation of organo-mineral associations occur concurrently on fresh litter surfaces regardless of soil structure. These two mechanisms—the two most prominent processes contributing to the persistence of organic matter—occur directly at plant–soil interfaces, where surfaces of litter constitute a nucleus in the build-up of soil carbon persistence. We extend the notion of plant litter, i.e., particulate organic matter, from solely an easily available and labile carbon substrate, to a functional component at which persistence of soil carbon is directly determined.

This is promoted by the "4 per 1000" Initiative, a multi-stakeholder platform aiming at increasing SOC storage through sustainable practices. The scientific and technical committee of the Initiative is working to identify indicators, research priorities and region-specific practices needed for their implementation. The Initiative received its name due to the global importance of soils for climate change, which can be illustrated by a thought experiment showing that an annual growth rate of only 0.4% of the standing global SOC stocks would have the potential to counterbalance the current increase in atmospheric CO2. However, there are numerous barriers to the rise in SOC stocks and while SOC sequestration can contribute to partly offsetting greenhouse gas emissions, its main benefits are related to increased soil quality and climate change adaptation. The Initiative provides a collaborative platform for policy makers, practitioners, scientists and stakeholders to engage in finding solutions. Criticism of the Initiative has been related to the poor definition of its numerical target, which was not understood as an aspirational goal. The objective of this paper is to present the aims of the initiative, to discuss critical issues and to present challenges for its implementation. We identify barriers, risks and trade-offs and advocate for collaboration between multiple parties in order to stimulate innovation and to initiate the transition of agricultural systems toward sustainability.

It necessary to assess the sensitivity of soil organic carbon (SOC) under storing practices in response to increasing soil moisture, temperature and frequent dry-wet cycles in order to anticipate future soil carbon losses. We evaluated the impact of these climatic events through an incubation experiment on temperate luvisols from conservation agriculture, organic agriculture, organic waste products applications, i.e. biowaste, residual municipal solid waste and farmyard manure composts compared with conventionally managemed soils. The alternative management options all have led to increased SOC stocks. Soil samples were incubated in the lab under different temperatures (20, 28 and 35&#176;C), different moisture conditions (pF1.5; 2.5 and 4.2) and under dry(pF4.2)-wet (pF1.5) cycles. Dry-wet cycles caused CO2 flushes but overall did not stimulate soil carbon mineralization relative to wet controls (pF1.5 and pF2.5). Overall the additional SOC stored under alternative management options was not more sensitive to climate change (temperature, moisture, dry-wet cycles) than the existing SOC.</p>

Despite a growing recognition of the importance of soils in the last few years, it is still urgent to advance solutions to preserve soils while addressing our societal challenges. This requires a better understanding and better ability to predict how do soils function, and hence an in-depth, mechanistic and integrated knowledge on soils. Studying soil organic matter gives a privileged entry into sustainable and climate smart soil management, because of its major role in elements cycles and soil properties. One of the main characteristics of soils is that they are the habitat of a huge diversity of living organisms, whose activity depends on the local environmental conditions and who in turn affect soil composition and structure: bio-organo-mineral interactions and feedbacks determine soil functioning. Another salient characteristic of soils is their complexity and heterogeneity at different spatial scales. Soil microbial communities live in a complex 3-D physical framework which causes a variety of microenvironments to develop that are more or less suitable for their growth and activity. Deciphering and describing what takes place at the microscale is necessary to understand and predict what happens at the microscaleIn this lecture, I will share examples of research achievements in these fields. I will also reflect on how I think research on soils can be performed, in particular that targeted research is necessary, possible and fun, that research on soils should not be reserved to soil scientists and that mechanistic research can be linked and hopefully contribute to global awareness and political initiatives.

In this context, agricultural production and healthy nutritious food are linked to soil health and the diversity of their (micro-)biome, which depend on organic carbon materials as an energy and nutrient source. In this paper, we review the evidence showing that carbon-rich soils improve the resilience of human societies to pandemics and other crises. We indicate pathways for how the loss of soil carbon due to farming could be reversed by transformations within our food systems. Moreover, we argue that soil carbon has a strong role to play in enhancing environmental and human health in addition to mitigating and adapting to climate change. This multifaceted role requires a transdisciplinary dialogue and multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Mueller; Carmen Höschen; Claire Chenu; Franz Buegger;AbstractThe largest terrestrial organic carbon pool, carbon in soils, is regulated by an intricate connection between plant carbon inputs, microbial activity, and the soil matrix. This is manifested by how microorganisms, the key players in transforming plant-derived carbon into soil organic carbon, are controlled by the physical arrangement of organic and inorganic soil particles. Here we conduct an incubation of isotopically labelled litter to study effects of soil structure on the fate of litter-derived organic matter. While microbial activity and fungal growth is enhanced in the coarser-textured soil, we show that occlusion of organic matter into aggregates and formation of organo-mineral associations occur concurrently on fresh litter surfaces regardless of soil structure. These two mechanisms—the two most prominent processes contributing to the persistence of organic matter—occur directly at plant–soil interfaces, where surfaces of litter constitute a nucleus in the build-up of soil carbon persistence. We extend the notion of plant litter, i.e., particulate organic matter, from solely an easily available and labile carbon substrate, to a functional component at which persistence of soil carbon is directly determined.

This is promoted by the "4 per 1000" Initiative, a multi-stakeholder platform aiming at increasing SOC storage through sustainable practices. The scientific and technical committee of the Initiative is working to identify indicators, research priorities and region-specific practices needed for their implementation. The Initiative received its name due to the global importance of soils for climate change, which can be illustrated by a thought experiment showing that an annual growth rate of only 0.4% of the standing global SOC stocks would have the potential to counterbalance the current increase in atmospheric CO2. However, there are numerous barriers to the rise in SOC stocks and while SOC sequestration can contribute to partly offsetting greenhouse gas emissions, its main benefits are related to increased soil quality and climate change adaptation. The Initiative provides a collaborative platform for policy makers, practitioners, scientists and stakeholders to engage in finding solutions. Criticism of the Initiative has been related to the poor definition of its numerical target, which was not understood as an aspirational goal. The objective of this paper is to present the aims of the initiative, to discuss critical issues and to present challenges for its implementation. We identify barriers, risks and trade-offs and advocate for collaboration between multiple parties in order to stimulate innovation and to initiate the transition of agricultural systems toward sustainability.

It necessary to assess the sensitivity of soil organic carbon (SOC) under storing practices in response to increasing soil moisture, temperature and frequent dry-wet cycles in order to anticipate future soil carbon losses. We evaluated the impact of these climatic events through an incubation experiment on temperate luvisols from conservation agriculture, organic agriculture, organic waste products applications, i.e. biowaste, residual municipal solid waste and farmyard manure composts compared with conventionally managemed soils. The alternative management options all have led to increased SOC stocks. Soil samples were incubated in the lab under different temperatures (20, 28 and 35&#176;C), different moisture conditions (pF1.5; 2.5 and 4.2) and under dry(pF4.2)-wet (pF1.5) cycles. Dry-wet cycles caused CO2 flushes but overall did not stimulate soil carbon mineralization relative to wet controls (pF1.5 and pF2.5). Overall the additional SOC stored under alternative management options was not more sensitive to climate change (temperature, moisture, dry-wet cycles) than the existing SOC.</p>

Despite a growing recognition of the importance of soils in the last few years, it is still urgent to advance solutions to preserve soils while addressing our societal challenges. This requires a better understanding and better ability to predict how do soils function, and hence an in-depth, mechanistic and integrated knowledge on soils. Studying soil organic matter gives a privileged entry into sustainable and climate smart soil management, because of its major role in elements cycles and soil properties. One of the main characteristics of soils is that they are the habitat of a huge diversity of living organisms, whose activity depends on the local environmental conditions and who in turn affect soil composition and structure: bio-organo-mineral interactions and feedbacks determine soil functioning. Another salient characteristic of soils is their complexity and heterogeneity at different spatial scales. Soil microbial communities live in a complex 3-D physical framework which causes a variety of microenvironments to develop that are more or less suitable for their growth and activity. Deciphering and describing what takes place at the microscale is necessary to understand and predict what happens at the microscaleIn this lecture, I will share examples of research achievements in these fields. I will also reflect on how I think research on soils can be performed, in particular that targeted research is necessary, possible and fun, that research on soils should not be reserved to soil scientists and that mechanistic research can be linked and hopefully contribute to global awareness and political initiatives.
