Abstract Harvest control rules have become an important tool in modern fisheries management, and are increasingly adopted to provide continuity in management practices, to deal with uncertainty and ecosystem considerations, and to relieve management decisions from short-term political pressure. We provide the conceptual and institutional background for harvest control rules, a discussion of the structure of fisheries management, and brief introductions to harvest control rules in a selection of present day cases. The cases demonstrate that harvest control rules take different forms in different settings, yet cover only a subset of the full policy space. We conclude with views on harvest control rules in future fisheries management, both in terms of ideal and realistic developments. One major challenge for future fisheries management is closing the gap between ideas and practice.

AbstractThe ocean, which regulates climate and supports vital ecosystem services, is crucial to our Earth system and livelihoods. Yet, it is threatened by anthropogenic pressures and climate change. A healthy ocean that supports a sustainable ocean economy requires adequate financing vehicles that generate, invest, align, and account for financial capital to achieve sustained ocean health and governance. However, the current finance gap is large; we identify key barriers to financing a sustainable ocean economy and suggest how to mitigate them, to incentivize the kind of public and private investments needed for topnotch science and management in support of a sustainable ocean economy.

Rácz; Niels Vestergaard;Abstract The widespread use of the renewable energy sources in the future's energy production is necessary, in order to avoid the predicted environmental, economic and social effects which can be derived from the overuse of fossil fuels. Denmark has announced to be fossil fuel independent with a renewable energy based heat and power source by 2050. Theoretically, the centralized biogas combined heat and power plants can play a determinant role in the subsequent Danish energy supply scheme, due to its feature to satisfy base load demand. The productivity and efficiency analysis of the currently operating Danish centralizes biogas CHP power plants is crucial in order to study whether there is a most efficient power plant which can be introduced as a “best practice” innovative technology for the future's Danish biogas power plants. In this paper we use the intertemporal Malmquist total factor productivity DEA method to analyze the change in the efficiency and productivity of the Danish centralized biogas power plants in the period 1992–2005.
