In the first case, the GEP and TEP problems are considered separately, while in the second GEP and TEP problems are solved together, thus G&TEP problem appears. The objective function of the mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem is minimizing the expected generation costs, load-shedding costs and investment costs. The planner can modify the presented mathematical model in order to satisfy any other system requirements considering G&TEP problem. The approach presented in this paper is a deterministic static one. The investment decision is considered to be made at the beginning of the planning horizon.

Light is essential to life, as well as enable us to perform visual tasks. The importance of good lighting is undeniable, as it provides an essential service to people in different types of environment. The innovation is changing the way of energy consumption; in particular, it offers completely new lighting solutions for a lifestyle comfortable and healthy. The aim of this paper is that to analyze the strategies that allow to improve the energy efficiency of a new building in particular, the wellness center. In this case, the attention is on the aspects related to the lighting. Different solutions, in terms of luminaries technologies and light management strategies have been analyzed.

One of the many aspects of power quality that can affect electricity users is voltage fluctuation that causes lights to flicker. The main power quality indices regarding flicker levels are reported in the paper with reference to the current standards.

The main objective of this paper is to study and analyse the voltage output waveform of a multilevel inverter, to suggest a new approach for harmonic mitigation improving the converter performance. These last type of converters represent a new technology in the field of DC/AC electrical energy conversion, presenting advantages respect to the traditional converters. In fact, the multilevel power converters present a low harmonic content and a high voltage level. The paper considers a five-level single-phase cascaded H-bridge inverter and fundamental frequency modulation techniques. The voltage waveform analysis has allowed to identify a working area of the converter where there are lowest values of the considered harmonic amplitude. The simulated behaviour of the model of the converter, with the logic piloting gate signals, has been obtained in Matlab-Simulink environment.

The impact of wind turbines and photovoltaic systems on network operation and power quality (harmonics, and voltage fluctuations) is very important. The capability of the power system to absorb this perturbation is dependent on the fault level at the point of common coupling. The paper deals with power quality case studies conducted on existing renewable resources-based systems. Voltage fluctuations determined by a 0.65 MVA wind turbine are analyzed. The impact of photovoltaic systems on steady state voltage variations and current harmonics is investigated. The correlation between the generated power and the main power quality indices is highlighted.

The current economic crisis, combined with growing citizen expectations, is placing increasing pressure on European cities to provide better and more efficient infrastructures and services, often for less cost. This trend has contributed to the growing popularity and use of the term `Smart City' [1]. The Smart City, represent a new way of thinking about urban space by shaping a model that integrates Green Energy Sources and Systems (GESSs), energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, protection of the environment and economic sustainability, that represent the goals for future developments. Smart cities are made by a high level of Information and Communication Technology-ICT- structures able to transmit energy, information flows multidirectional and connect a different sector that include mobility, energy, social, economy. Into Smart Cities transport systems are sustainable, smart grids are enhanced to ensure greater integration capabilities of production plants from renewable sources, public lighting is efficient, the buildings are equipped with sensors and devices aimed at rationalizing consumption energy and create greater awareness on the part of citizens, with the aim of improving the quality of life of people through a new governance of public administration capable of managing this innovation and cultural change. However, while wishing the transformation of cities in smart systems, have not defined models infrastructure, that allow different subsets to communicate and interact, in order to make the concrete realization of a smart city. The objective of this paper is to discuss a model of Smart City with a multi-agent systems and Internet of things, that provides intelligence to a city, as basic infrastructure for a definition of a model repeatable and exportable, so as advocated by the European Community, that is allocating considerable funds (Horizon 2020) for the creation of Smart City.

The paper discusses on a control algorithm applied to a hybrid PV power system. The hybrid power system is constituted by directly connecting an Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) device on the dc output bus of the PV Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT) converter. The aim of this paper is to propose a control approach applied to the dc power converter able to assure a double set-point regulation, which takes into account the operational constraints of both the PV power source and storage buffer. Control design is based on a cascade strategy. The controller parameters are synthesize basing on the State Space Averaging (SSA) method and low perturbation approach. A numerical simulator is set up in ®Matlab. The results of simulations aim to validate the features of the proposed approach.

The climate change is increasingly apparent and the need to be independent for the sourcing of energy sources has led to the establishment of the European Community financing schemes to support research and development of systems in place to decrease pollution and independence from fossil fuels. One way to catch up with greater conviction this scope is the production of energy at a large scale, using renewable sources. Now, the incentives are even a fundamental element for the development and competitiveness of these systems, but it is clear that if the policy guidelines will converge in the direction of Horizon 2020, the possibility of implementing such systems will become a model easily replicable and suitable. In this context, this work aims to show how a production system that exploits solar energy, through a plant collector, can be comparable in terms of cost with other energy sources. In particular, an estimate is made of an economic system with solar collectors for the production of electrical energy, starting with the year of production and on the basis of 25 years of life of the plant.

Abstract Photovoltaic technology allows to directly convert solar energy into electrical energy with clear advantages: no environmental impact during operation, reliability and durability of the systems, reduced operating costs and maintenance, ability to both supply remote customers and simply connect to the electrical network. This paper evaluates the performance of two photovoltaic systems: one fixed and one equipped with a sun tracker. The objective of this research is to analyze the increase of daily produced energy by using the sun tracking system. The analysis accounts also the energy consumption of the sun tracker. An analytical approach is proposed. To validate the results through experimental tests, two alternative low power PV systems were built. Each system consists of a PV source, a MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracker) power converter and a 12 V–40 A h electrochemical battery, which is used as electric load. The sun tracker system evidenced an important growth of power production during morning and evening.
