However, despite the fact that previous studies highlight all kinds of benefits of environment-oriented leaders’ voluntary workplace green behavior (VWGB) in and for firms, little is known about how these leaders’ VWGB could affect a firm team’s green product innovation as well as their process innovation. To narrow this research gap, this study theorizes and tests the effect of leaders’ VWGB on their team’s green innovation, as well as the mediation effect of team green efficacy belief on this relationship. Using a time-lagged research design, we collected data from 497 employees and 80 leaders in Chinese manufacturing firms. The results show that leaders’ VWGB directly affects both their team’s green product and process innovation, and facilitates the development of team green efficacy, which in turn stimulates team green innovation. This present study extends the multilevel phenomena by reinforcing the importance of leaders’ VWGB and team green efficacy on team-level green innovation, and provides practical implications on developing leadership for environmentally sustainable innovation.

Using data from the China Enterprise Survey of the World Bank, empirical findings suggest that the influence of B–G ties on Chinese firms’ product innovation is different in distinctive institutional contexts in China. More specifically, during institutional transition, B–G ties become less efficient for facilitating product innovation when regional legal institutions and infrastructural supporting systems in a region are more stable, fair, and efficient. By contrast, during institutional transition, a positive effect of B–G ties on firm product innovation in a region becomes more significant when financial systems are relatively advanced. In addition to this, the value of B–G ties for firm product innovation appears to be more stable when business regulation develops within subnational regions.

It studies the simultaneous functioning and effects of knowledge flow mechanisms on sustainable innovation in project-based firms in project-based industries; industries like the construction-, film-, game-, consultancy-, and IT-industry. To this end, a retrospective case study, covering 20 years (1989–2008) of sustainable innovation in the Dutch house-building industry, is conducted. This study finds that bundles of knowledge flow mechanisms stimulate both sustainable innovation creation by small networks of innovative firms that cooperate in demonstration projects, as well as stimulates a limited adoption of some of these created sustainable innovations by networks of larger incumbent firms outside these demonstration projects. Based on this finding the paper proposes a model and related propositions. To scholars it can serve as a basis for future research that further explores and tests the effect of the flow of knowledge on the eco-innovativeness of industries that heavily rely on projects. The findings can also be of benefit for policy and business practitioners in and around project-based industries. To them it can provide a route for getting sustainable innovations applied on a larger scale, from demonstration projects to regular projects.

It develops a framework of input, throughput and output legitimacy. The framework is developed based on a review of the literature on the creation of legitimacy in innovative technological development. The framework assists in further exploring the potential of the integrated assessment of the legitimacy of technological innovation trajectories in the public sphere, in terms of (1) public accountability (ensuring input legitimacy); (2) science, technology and innovation policy (ensuring throughput legitimacy); and (3) the potential for the implementation of the technology itself in practical contexts (ensuring output legitimacy). The framework is used to analyze a case study about the publicly-funded development of innovative technology for the retrieval of raw materials from waste water. Theoretically, the value of a more processual approach to the conceptualization of legitimacy becomes apparent. Furthermore, the framework assists in the development of practical recommendations on the ways in which to optimize the legitimacy in an earlier stage in the innovation’s trajectory. However, due attention should also be paid to the role of regulatory arrangements in the optimization of the legitimacy of publicly-funded technological innovation. This is an avenue for further research.

It develops a framework of input, throughput and output legitimacy. The framework is developed based on a review of the literature on the creation of legitimacy in innovative technological development. The framework assists in further exploring the potential of the integrated assessment of the legitimacy of technological innovation trajectories in the public sphere, in terms of (1) public accountability (ensuring input legitimacy); (2) science, technology and innovation policy (ensuring throughput legitimacy); and (3) the potential for the implementation of the technology itself in practical contexts (ensuring output legitimacy). The framework is used to analyze a case study about the publicly-funded development of innovative technology for the retrieval of raw materials from waste water. Theoretically, the value of a more processual approach to the conceptualization of legitimacy becomes apparent. Furthermore, the framework assists in the development of practical recommendations on the ways in which to optimize the legitimacy in an earlier stage in the innovation’s trajectory. However, due attention should also be paid to the role of regulatory arrangements in the optimization of the legitimacy of publicly-funded technological innovation. This is an avenue for further research.

However, the rapid development has led to the PV market saturation in some areas, and solar curtailment has even occurred due to the oversupply. With more demand for PV installation in the future, the question of where to efficiently deploy PV systems to both meet the increasing PV electricity demand and alleviate the mismatch between PV supply and local demand becomes relevant. To explore these issues, this paper proposes an integrated framework for planning the PV installed capacity allocation. The framework can be decomposed into two stages: at the optimization stage, a multi-objective optimization (MOO) model is proposed, integrating the minimization of mismatch between PV supply and local demand as an additional objective along with the traditional economic and environmental profits maximization objective; and at the evaluation stage, an entropy-weighted Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is employed to make the decision of the PV allocation scheme. By applying this integrated model to the Chinese PV deployment, the results reveal that the consideration of the match between PV supply and local demand has a direct influence on the PV installation layout. More than 50% of the PV systems are expected to be in areas with higher demand and higher profits, rather than the areas with high solar irradiance but lower demand. Distributed PV installations are expected to account for 60% of the total installed capacity. The implementation of this PV installation planning is estimated to result in a reduction of 1036 Mt CO2 emission, a 14.2% PV penetration rate, and 566 billion CNY total profits, making it an attractive and feasible instrument for countries striving towards carbon neutrality goals.

This paper analyzes 30 worldwide cases of sustainably innovative building projects, concentrating on the cooperative learning behavior of actors that ignite and contribute to sustainable building innovation. The analysis sheds light on three clusters of project organizations, their typical cooperative learning processes, and the cooperative sustainable learning effects achieved. Theoretically, this work contributes by suggesting an analytical model to study learning forms that support sustainable building innovation; practically, this study indicates that cooperative learning practices facilitate professionals, regardless of their role in project organizations, to be innovators in proposing and achieving green innovation in the construction engineering sector.

However, a growing body of evidence has shown that the sale of liquid food in environmentally friendly packaging is increasing. The purpose of this study was to analyze why consumers are willing to pay more for liquid food in environmentally friendly packaging. Drawing on the theory of dual attitudes by Wilson, Lindsey, and Schooler, this study proposes that consumer purchasing behavior can be explained through implicit and explicit attitudes. Moreover, a consumer’s ecoliteracy and ecofriendly lifestyle might be important predictors of consumer attitudes toward environmentally friendly packaging. Our conceptual model was tested on survey data from 11 countries, with a total of 7028 respondents. The study revealed that consumers’ willingness to pay a higher price for liquid food in environmentally friendly packaging could be predicted by their positive attitudes toward (a) the environmental friendliness of the packaging, (b) the brand of the liquid food, and (c) the affordability of the liquid food in the environmentally friendly packaging. Ecoliteracy and having an ecofriendly lifestyle were found to be important predictors of consumer attitudes toward environmentally friendly packaging. This study contributes to the literature that aims to explain consumers’ willingness to pay more for food in environmentally friendly packaging. Although there is vast research into sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations, research literature offers a fragmented collection of findings. A coherent overview of themes and insights regarding the transformative impact of innovative sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations on sustainable energy systems from the past, present, and near future is lacking and necessary to increase experiments and demonstrations' impact on the sustainable energy transition. The research in this study fills this knowledge gap by providing such an overview and yields novel insights into the organized function and impact of experiments and demonstrations. It spans a broad spectrum of sustainable energy technologies, the empirical domains where these are invented, developed and applied, and the stakeholders involved. The overview is the outcome of a Delphi study in which the insights of 47 international scientific research experts in sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations are bundled and explained. This study presents a thematic overview of the significant insights regarding past and current sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations and outlines a research agenda for the future. Policymakers, practitioners, and scientists can leverage this to inform their sustainable energy policies, business strategies, and research programs. Although there is vast research into sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations, research literature offers a fragmented collection of findings. A coherent overview of themes and insights regarding the transformative impact of innovative sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations on sustainable energy systems from the past, present, and near future is lacking and necessary to increase experiments and demonstrations' impact on the sustainable energy transition. The research in this study fills this knowledge gap by providing such an overview and yields novel insights into the organized function and impact of experiments and demonstrations. It spans a broad spectrum of sustainable energy technologies, the empirical domains where these are invented, developed and applied, and the stakeholders involved. The overview is the outcome of a Delphi study in which the insights of 47 international scientific research experts in sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations are bundled and explained. This study presents a thematic overview of the significant insights regarding past and current sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations and outlines a research agenda for the future. Policymakers, practitioners, and scientists can leverage this to inform their sustainable energy policies, business strategies, and research programs. Cross-sectional data from the Community Innovation Survey of German companies is used to test hypotheses with regard to this effect. Results from PLS-SEM analyses show that sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring capabilities all have a significant direct effect on innovation towards sustainability, with sensing activities playing the most prominent role. It is also found that reconfiguring capabilities positively influence sensing as well as seizing capabilities, and that sensing and seizing capabilities partially mediate the relationship between reconfiguring capabilities and companies’ sustainable innovation. This research extends the current literature by investigating how companies could build-up and shape their dynamic capabilities and organizational routines for sustainable innovation. To practice, it offers guidance concerning appropriate and important dynamic capabilities and organizational routines for innovating towards sustainability.

However, despite the fact that previous studies highlight all kinds of benefits of environment-oriented leaders’ voluntary workplace green behavior (VWGB) in and for firms, little is known about how these leaders’ VWGB could affect a firm team’s green product innovation as well as their process innovation. To narrow this research gap, this study theorizes and tests the effect of leaders’ VWGB on their team’s green innovation, as well as the mediation effect of team green efficacy belief on this relationship. Using a time-lagged research design, we collected data from 497 employees and 80 leaders in Chinese manufacturing firms. The results show that leaders’ VWGB directly affects both their team’s green product and process innovation, and facilitates the development of team green efficacy, which in turn stimulates team green innovation. This present study extends the multilevel phenomena by reinforcing the importance of leaders’ VWGB and team green efficacy on team-level green innovation, and provides practical implications on developing leadership for environmentally sustainable innovation.

Using data from the China Enterprise Survey of the World Bank, empirical findings suggest that the influence of B–G ties on Chinese firms’ product innovation is different in distinctive institutional contexts in China. More specifically, during institutional transition, B–G ties become less efficient for facilitating product innovation when regional legal institutions and infrastructural supporting systems in a region are more stable, fair, and efficient. By contrast, during institutional transition, a positive effect of B–G ties on firm product innovation in a region becomes more significant when financial systems are relatively advanced. In addition to this, the value of B–G ties for firm product innovation appears to be more stable when business regulation develops within subnational regions.

Using data from the China Enterprise Survey of the World Bank, empirical findings suggest that the influence of B–G ties on Chinese firms’ product innovation is different in distinctive institutional contexts in China. More specifically, during institutional transition, B–G ties become less efficient for facilitating product innovation when regional legal institutions and infrastructural supporting systems in a region are more stable, fair, and efficient. By contrast, during institutional transition, a positive effect of B–G ties on firm product innovation in a region becomes more significant when financial systems are relatively advanced. In addition to this, the value of B–G ties for firm product innovation appears to be more stable when business regulation develops within subnational regions.

It studies the simultaneous functioning and effects of knowledge flow mechanisms on sustainable innovation in project-based firms in project-based industries; industries like the construction-, film-, game-, consultancy-, and IT-industry. To this end, a retrospective case study, covering 20 years (1989–2008) of sustainable innovation in the Dutch house-building industry, is conducted. This study finds that bundles of knowledge flow mechanisms stimulate both sustainable innovation creation by small networks of innovative firms that cooperate in demonstration projects, as well as stimulates a limited adoption of some of these created sustainable innovations by networks of larger incumbent firms outside these demonstration projects. Based on this finding the paper proposes a model and related propositions. To scholars it can serve as a basis for future research that further explores and tests the effect of the flow of knowledge on the eco-innovativeness of industries that heavily rely on projects. The findings can also be of benefit for policy and business practitioners in and around project-based industries. To them it can provide a route for getting sustainable innovations applied on a larger scale, from demonstration projects to regular projects.

It develops a framework of input, throughput and output legitimacy. The framework is developed based on a review of the literature on the creation of legitimacy in innovative technological development. The framework assists in further exploring the potential of the integrated assessment of the legitimacy of technological innovation trajectories in the public sphere, in terms of (1) public accountability (ensuring input legitimacy); (2) science, technology and innovation policy (ensuring throughput legitimacy); and (3) the potential for the implementation of the technology itself in practical contexts (ensuring output legitimacy). The framework is used to analyze a case study about the publicly-funded development of innovative technology for the retrieval of raw materials from waste water. Theoretically, the value of a more processual approach to the conceptualization of legitimacy becomes apparent. Furthermore, the framework assists in the development of practical recommendations on the ways in which to optimize the legitimacy in an earlier stage in the innovation’s trajectory. However, due attention should also be paid to the role of regulatory arrangements in the optimization of the legitimacy of publicly-funded technological innovation. This is an avenue for further research.

However, the rapid development has led to the PV market saturation in some areas, and solar curtailment has even occurred due to the oversupply. With more demand for PV installation in the future, the question of where to efficiently deploy PV systems to both meet the increasing PV electricity demand and alleviate the mismatch between PV supply and local demand becomes relevant. To explore these issues, this paper proposes an integrated framework for planning the PV installed capacity allocation. The framework can be decomposed into two stages: at the optimization stage, a multi-objective optimization (MOO) model is proposed, integrating the minimization of mismatch between PV supply and local demand as an additional objective along with the traditional economic and environmental profits maximization objective; and at the evaluation stage, an entropy-weighted Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is employed to make the decision of the PV allocation scheme. By applying this integrated model to the Chinese PV deployment, the results reveal that the consideration of the match between PV supply and local demand has a direct influence on the PV installation layout. More than 50% of the PV systems are expected to be in areas with higher demand and higher profits, rather than the areas with high solar irradiance but lower demand. Distributed PV installations are expected to account for 60% of the total installed capacity. The implementation of this PV installation planning is estimated to result in a reduction of 1036 Mt CO2 emission, a 14.2% PV penetration rate, and 566 billion CNY total profits, making it an attractive and feasible instrument for countries striving towards carbon neutrality goals.

This paper analyzes 30 worldwide cases of sustainably innovative building projects, concentrating on the cooperative learning behavior of actors that ignite and contribute to sustainable building innovation. The analysis sheds light on three clusters of project organizations, their typical cooperative learning processes, and the cooperative sustainable learning effects achieved. Theoretically, this work contributes by suggesting an analytical model to study learning forms that support sustainable building innovation; practically, this study indicates that cooperative learning practices facilitate professionals, regardless of their role in project organizations, to be innovators in proposing and achieving green innovation in the construction engineering sector.

This paper analyzes 30 worldwide cases of sustainably innovative building projects, concentrating on the cooperative learning behavior of actors that ignite and contribute to sustainable building innovation. The analysis sheds light on three clusters of project organizations, their typical cooperative learning processes, and the cooperative sustainable learning effects achieved. Theoretically, this work contributes by suggesting an analytical model to study learning forms that support sustainable building innovation; practically, this study indicates that cooperative learning practices facilitate professionals, regardless of their role in project organizations, to be innovators in proposing and achieving green innovation in the construction engineering sector.

The purpose of this study was to analyze why consumers are willing to pay more for liquid food in environmentally friendly packaging. Drawing on the theory of dual attitudes by Wilson, Lindsey, and Schooler, this study proposes that consumer purchasing behavior can be explained through implicit and explicit attitudes. Moreover, a consumer’s ecoliteracy and ecofriendly lifestyle might be important predictors of consumer attitudes toward environmentally friendly packaging. Our conceptual model was tested on survey data from 11 countries, with a total of 7028 respondents. The study revealed that consumers’ willingness to pay a higher price for liquid food in environmentally friendly packaging could be predicted by their positive attitudes toward (a) the environmental friendliness of the packaging, (b) the brand of the liquid food, and (c) the affordability of the liquid food in the environmentally friendly packaging. Ecoliteracy and having an ecofriendly lifestyle were found to be important predictors of consumer attitudes toward environmentally friendly packaging. This study contributes to the literature that aims to explain consumers’ willingness to pay more for food in environmentally friendly packaging. It identifies how much more consumers are willing to pay for food in environmentally friendly packaging and why.

Although there is vast research into sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations, research literature offers a fragmented collection of findings. A coherent overview of themes and insights regarding the transformative impact of innovative sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations on sustainable energy systems from the past, present, and near future is lacking and necessary to increase experiments and demonstrations' impact on the sustainable energy transition. The research in this study fills this knowledge gap by providing such an overview and yields novel insights into the organized function and impact of experiments and demonstrations. It spans a broad spectrum of sustainable energy technologies, the empirical domains where these are invented, developed and applied, and the stakeholders involved. The overview is the outcome of a Delphi study in which the insights of 47 international scientific research experts in sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations are bundled and explained. This study presents a thematic overview of the significant insights regarding past and current sustainable energy experiments and demonstrations and outlines a research agenda for the future. Policymakers, practitioners, and scientists can leverage this to inform their sustainable energy policies, business strategies, and research programs. Cross-sectional data from the Community Innovation Survey of German companies is used to test hypotheses with regard to this effect. Results from PLS-SEM analyses show that sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring capabilities all have a significant direct effect on innovation towards sustainability, with sensing activities playing the most prominent role. It is also found that reconfiguring capabilities positively influence sensing as well as seizing capabilities, and that sensing and seizing capabilities partially mediate the relationship between reconfiguring capabilities and companies’ sustainable innovation. This research extends the current literature by investigating how companies could build-up and shape their dynamic capabilities and organizational routines for sustainable innovation. To practice, it offers guidance concerning appropriate and important dynamic capabilities and organizational routines for innovating towards sustainability.
