The unsteady and random character of turbulent flow motion is a key aspect of the multidimensional modeling of internal combustion engines (ICEs). A typical example can be found in the prediction of the cycle-to-cycle variability (CCV) in modern, highly downsized gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines, which strongly depends on the accurate simulation of turbulent in-cylinder flow structures. The current standard for turbulence modeling in ICEs is still represented by the unsteady form of Reynold-averaged Navier Stokes equations (URANS), which allows the simulation of full engine cycles at relatively low computational costs. URANS-based methods, however, are only able to return a statistical description of turbulence, as the effects of all scales of motion are entirely modeled. Therefore, during the last decade, scale-resolving methods such as large eddy simulation (LES) or hybrid URANS/LES approaches are gaining increasing attention among the engine-modeling community. In the present paper, we propose a scale-resolving capable modification of the popular RNG k– ε URANS model. The modification is based on a detached-eddy simulation (DES) framework and allows one to explicitly set the behavior (URANS, DES or LES) of the model in different zones of the computational domain. The resulting zonal formulation has been tested on two reference test cases, comparing the numerical predictions with the available experimental data sets and with previous computational studies. Overall, the scale-resolved part of the computed flow has been found to be consistent with the expected flow physics, thus confirming the validity of the proposed simulation methodology.

Abstract The optimal design of distributed generation systems is of foremost importance to reduce fossil fuel consumption and mitigate the environmental impact of human activities in urban areas. Moreover, an efficient and integrated control strategy is needed for each of the components of a distributed generation plant, in order to reach the expected economic and environmental performances. In this paper, the transition from natural gas to electricity-based heating is evaluated for residential applications, considering the interplay between photovoltaic electricity produced on site and the thermal energy storage, to grant the optimal management of heating devices. The energy demand of an apartment building, under different climatic conditions, is taken as a reference and four power plant solutions are assessed in terms of energy cost and pollution reduction potential, compared to a baseline plant configuration. The performance of each power plant is analyzed assuming an optimized control strategy, which is determined through a graph-based methodology that was previously developed and validated by the authors. Outcomes from our study show that, if heat pumps are used instead of natural gas boilers, energy costs are reduced up to 41%, while CO 2 emissions are reduced up to 73%, depending on the climatic conditions. Our results provide a sound basis for considering the larger penetration of photovoltaic plants as an effective solution towards cleaner and more efficient heating technologies for civil applications. The simultaneous utilization of heat pumps (as substitutes of boilers) and photovoltaic panels yields a positive synergy that nullifies the local pollution, drastically cuts the CO 2 emission, and guarantees the economical sustainability of the investment in renewable energy sources without subsidiary mechanisms.

Abstract In this paper, the results of three generations of reactors for the direct conversion of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) in electrical energy are presented. The different generations corresponds to the prototype realized in the Energy Lab of the University of Naples “Parthenope” and have been monitored along a period of over three years in terms of polarization and power curves, in order to assess the feasibility of Microbial Fuel Cell as a promising source for future, sustainable energy generation.

Phase changing materials (PCMs) have been widely investigated for Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage (LHTES) applications in the last decades, due to their inherently high volumetric storage density and thermal control features. Nonetheless, PCMs and their related LHTES systems still require significant scientific and technical advancements and more efficient market penetration strategies, to be able to play a key role in the massive transition towards renewable energy that is expected to take place in EU in the near future. Some of the most investigated PCMs for low to medium temperature LHTES belong to the alkanes/paraffins family, which is characterized by a relatively high volumetric expansion solid-to-liquid phase transition. This is generally considered a side effect, which should be accounted for to avoid damaging the containment structure. However, it could also represent an opportunity to add extra functionalities and increase the overall efficiency of LHTES systems. In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of using the mechanical work generated by the volumetric expansion cycles in a paraffin-based LHTES device for photovoltaic (PV) solar tracking purposes, thus assuming a novel paradigm for the efficient integration between thermal and PV solar installations. To this aim, the temporal evolution of temperature and density fields inside the PCM are modeled through a finite-difference/finite-volume numerical approach. Accurate charge/discharge profiles of the TES are implemented, considering data from a previously investigated solar-assisted heating/cooling plant for a typical residential application in southern Italy. Outcomes from this analysis allow to estimate the tracking capability of the chosen PCM in terms of number/surface of actuated PV panels.

A 3D CFD complete model to evaluate the performance of a Micro-CHP system based on a single HT-PEM Fuel Cell is proposed. In previous papers, we described the development of the channel design, optimized for the best gas diffusion with the lowest pressure losses, and the set-up of our electrochemical model. A detailed 3D model of the coolant paths has been realized and different cooling liquids have been accounted for. The overall energetic performances, in terms of power output and heat production, have been evaluated and compared to similar data in literature.

Thermal energy torage (TES) is a key enabling technology for the efficient exploitation of distributed generation systems based on renewable energy sources. Among the available options, research on latent heat TES (LHTES) solutions has been particularly active in the last decade, due to their ability to store and release high amounts of thermal energy in a very narrow temperature range. LHTES devices are based on phase change materials (PCMs), which act as thermal sinks or sources during their solid-to-liquid transition and vice-versa. As such, the development of reliable numerical tools for the prediction of the heat transfer and phase change characteristics of PCMs is of foremost importance, to help designing innovative and efficiently integrated LHTES implementations. In the present paper, the consolidated enthalpy-porosity (EP) method is compared to a novel lattice Boltzmann-phase field (LB-PF) algorithm in the simulation of a standard numerical benchmark for paraffin-like PCM melting problems. Performances and limitations of the two approaches are discussed, including the influence of model-related and purely numerical parameters. Outcomes from this study are used to confirm general guidelines for the application of well established methodologies, as well as to suggest new pathways for out-of-standard modeling techniques.

Computational Fluid Dynamics is nowadays largely employed as an effective optimization tool in the automotive industry, especially for what concerns aerodynamic design driven by critical factors such as the engine cooling system optimization and the reduction of drag forces, both limited by continuously changing stylistic constraints. The Ahmed reference model is a generic car-type bluff body with a slant back, which is frequently used as a benchmark test case by industrial as well as academic researchers, in order to investigate the performances of different turbulence modeling approaches. In spite of its relatively simple geometry, the Ahmed model possesses many of the typical aerodynamic features of a modern passenger car - a bluff body with separated boundary layers, recirculating flows and complex three-dimensional wake structures. Several experimental works have pointed out that the flow region which presents the major contribution to the overall aerodynamic drag is the wake flow behind the vehicle model: therefore, a more exact simulation of the wake and separation process seems to be essential for the accuracy of numerical drag predictions. As a consequence, a significant effort has been put in many computational studies carried out on the Ahmed model in the last two decades, in order to fix benefits and deficiencies of various turbulence modeling practices, from the steady-state RANS approach to the fully unsteady LES approach. Though now there are some generally accepted remarks, such as the difficulties encountered by some classical steady-state RANS models in giving accurate results for some critical flow regimes, it is authors' opinion that there are still some issues that need to be addressed, particularly for what concerns the differences and the possible improvements related to the passage from steady to unsteady approaches. In this paper a numerical investigation of turbulent flow around the Ahmed model, performed with the open-source CFD toolbox OpenFOAM®, is presented. Several URANS turbulence models, as well as different wall treatments, have been extensively tested on the notoriously critical 25° rear slant angle configuration of the Ahmed body. Simulations with the same models, but run in steady-state RANS mode, have been also provided in order to evaluate which kind of approach could be the best compromise as a sufficiently accurate and time-saving optimization tool for ground vehicle aerodynamic design. Drag predictions and other flow features, especially in terms of velocity profiles visualization in the rear region, have been critically compared with the experimental data available in the literature and with some prior numerical studies.

Though now there are some generally accepted remarks, such as the difficulties encountered by some classical steady-state RANS models in giving accurate results for some critical flow regimes, it is authors' opinion that there are still some issues that need to be addressed, particularly for what concerns the differences and the possible improvements related to the passage from steady to unsteady approaches. In this paper a numerical investigation of turbulent flow around the Ahmed model, performed with the open-source CFD toolbox OpenFOAM®, is presented. Several URANS turbulence models, as well as different wall treatments, have been extensively tested on the notoriously critical 25° rear slant angle configuration of the Ahmed body. Simulations with the same models, but run in steady-state RANS mode, have been also provided in order to evaluate which kind of approach could be the best compromise as a sufficiently accurate and time-saving optimization tool for ground vehicle aerodynamic design. Drag predictions and other flow features, especially in terms of velocity profiles visualization in the rear region, have been critically compared with the experimental data available in the literature and with some prior numerical studies.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Batteries are the key elements for the massive electrification of the transport sector. With the rapidly growing popularity of electric vehicles, it is becoming increasingly important to characterize the behavior of battery packs through fast and accurate numerical models, in order to support experimental activities. A coupled electro-thermal simulation framework is required, as it is the only way to realistically represent the interactions between real world battery pack performances and the vehicle-level thermal management strategies. The purpose of this work is to pave the way for a comprehensive methodology for the development of a supporting modeling framework, to efficiently complement experiments in the optimal design and integration of battery packs.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">The full methodology consists of the following steps: i) an experimental analysis of the temperature and current dependence on various internal parameters of selected lithium-ion cells based on their electrochemical properties, ii) development and implementation of a battery cell electric model that takes into account the aforementioned dynamics and their dependencies; the electrical model is based on the Equivalent Circuit Model (ECM) and can be used to calculate the electrical output and losses of Li-ion cells as a function of state of charge and current; iii) development of a cell-level multi-domain computational framework for coupled electro-thermal simulations, based on state-of-the art CFD software tools; iv) validation and tuning of the multi-domain framework through ad-hoc designed experiments with controlled cell charge-discharge profiles and temperature measurement; v) extension of both the ECM and multi-domain approaches to full-scale battery packs, to be adopted for electric vehicle characterization under realistic driving conditions, with detailed battery thermal management.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">Results shown in the present paper cover steps i) to iv) and include a series of static and dynamic experimental tests with voltage response and temperature measurements performed on the selected Li-ion cells. It is shown that the proposed modeling tools can accurately predict the electro-thermal behavior of the cells under static and dynamic current conditions. Most of the average relative errors between predicted values and test values obtained do not exceed 10%.</div></div>

Turbulence modeling for fuel spray simulation plays a prominent role in the understanding of the flow behavior in Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs). Currently, a lot of research work is actively spent on Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence modeling as a replacement option of standard Reynolds averaged approaches in the Eulerian-Lagrangian spray modeling framework, due to its capability to accurately describe flow-induced spray variability and to the lower dependence of the results on the specific turbulence model and/or modeling coefficients. The introduction of LES poses, however, additional questions related to the implementation/adaptation of spray-related turbulence sources and to the rise of conflicting numerics and grid requirements between the Lagrangian and Eulerian parts of the simulated flow. About the latter, an efficient alternative might be found in hybrid URANS/LES formulations, which are still relatively unexplored for spray modeling applications and for ICE modeling in general. In this work, we conduct a systematic analysis aimed to assess the effects of several URANS, LES and hybrid turbulence modeling formulations on the spray dynamics. The hybrid form is based on a purposely developed version of the k-g URANS closure, and the simulation campaign is focused on a standard n-dodecane evaporating spray case in a constant volume vessel configuration. The spray is modeled within the Eulerian-Lagrangian framework, with primary and secondary breakup taken into account by means of the Kelvin-Helmholtz-Rayleigh-Taylor (KHRT) model. Further, we investigate on the effects due to the Stochastic Turbulence Dispersion (STD) of parcels. Numerical experiments are carried out via the open-source CFD code OpenFOAM. The results are validated against the baseline experimental data for evaporating ECN Spray A and with previous computational findings available in literature.

The unsteady and random character of turbulent flow motion is a key aspect of the multidimensional modeling of internal combustion engines (ICEs). A typical example can be found in the prediction of the cycle-to-cycle variability (CCV) in modern, highly downsized gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines, which strongly depends on the accurate simulation of turbulent in-cylinder flow structures. The current standard for turbulence modeling in ICEs is still represented by the unsteady form of Reynold-averaged Navier Stokes equations (URANS), which allows the simulation of full engine cycles at relatively low computational costs. URANS-based methods, however, are only able to return a statistical description of turbulence, as the effects of all scales of motion are entirely modeled. Therefore, during the last decade, scale-resolving methods such as large eddy simulation (LES) or hybrid URANS/LES approaches are gaining increasing attention among the engine-modeling community. In the present paper, we propose a scale-resolving capable modification of the popular RNG k– ε URANS model. The modification is based on a detached-eddy simulation (DES) framework and allows one to explicitly set the behavior (URANS, DES or LES) of the model in different zones of the computational domain. The resulting zonal formulation has been tested on two reference test cases, comparing the numerical predictions with the available experimental data sets and with previous computational studies. Overall, the scale-resolved part of the computed flow has been found to be consistent with the expected flow physics, thus confirming the validity of the proposed simulation methodology.

Abstract The optimal design of distributed generation systems is of foremost importance to reduce fossil fuel consumption and mitigate the environmental impact of human activities in urban areas. Moreover, an efficient and integrated control strategy is needed for each of the components of a distributed generation plant, in order to reach the expected economic and environmental performances. In this paper, the transition from natural gas to electricity-based heating is evaluated for residential applications, considering the interplay between photovoltaic electricity produced on site and the thermal energy storage, to grant the optimal management of heating devices. The energy demand of an apartment building, under different climatic conditions, is taken as a reference and four power plant solutions are assessed in terms of energy cost and pollution reduction potential, compared to a baseline plant configuration. The performance of each power plant is analyzed assuming an optimized control strategy, which is determined through a graph-based methodology that was previously developed and validated by the authors. Outcomes from our study show that, if heat pumps are used instead of natural gas boilers, energy costs are reduced up to 41%, while CO 2 emissions are reduced up to 73%, depending on the climatic conditions. Our results provide a sound basis for considering the larger penetration of photovoltaic plants as an effective solution towards cleaner and more efficient heating technologies for civil applications. The simultaneous utilization of heat pumps (as substitutes of boilers) and photovoltaic panels yields a positive synergy that nullifies the local pollution, drastically cuts the CO 2 emission, and guarantees the economical sustainability of the investment in renewable energy sources without subsidiary mechanisms.

Abstract In this paper, the results of three generations of reactors for the direct conversion of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) in electrical energy are presented. The different generations corresponds to the prototype realized in the Energy Lab of the University of Naples “Parthenope” and have been monitored along a period of over three years in terms of polarization and power curves, in order to assess the feasibility of Microbial Fuel Cell as a promising source for future, sustainable energy generation.

Phase changing materials (PCMs) have been widely investigated for Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage (LHTES) applications in the last decades, due to their inherently high volumetric storage density and thermal control features. Nonetheless, PCMs and their related LHTES systems still require significant scientific and technical advancements and more efficient market penetration strategies, to be able to play a key role in the massive transition towards renewable energy that is expected to take place in EU in the near future. Some of the most investigated PCMs for low to medium temperature LHTES belong to the alkanes/paraffins family, which is characterized by a relatively high volumetric expansion solid-to-liquid phase transition. This is generally considered a side effect, which should be accounted for to avoid damaging the containment structure. However, it could also represent an opportunity to add extra functionalities and increase the overall efficiency of LHTES systems. In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of using the mechanical work generated by the volumetric expansion cycles in a paraffin-based LHTES device for photovoltaic (PV) solar tracking purposes, thus assuming a novel paradigm for the efficient integration between thermal and PV solar installations. To this aim, the temporal evolution of temperature and density fields inside the PCM are modeled through a finite-difference/finite-volume numerical approach. Accurate charge/discharge profiles of the TES are implemented, considering data from a previously investigated solar-assisted heating/cooling plant for a typical residential application in southern Italy. Outcomes from this analysis allow to estimate the tracking capability of the chosen PCM in terms of number/surface of actuated PV panels.

A 3D CFD complete model to evaluate the performance of a Micro-CHP system based on a single HT-PEM Fuel Cell is proposed. In previous papers, we described the development of the channel design, optimized for the best gas diffusion with the lowest pressure losses, and the set-up of our electrochemical model. A detailed 3D model of the coolant paths has been realized and different cooling liquids have been accounted for. The overall energetic performances, in terms of power output and heat production, have been evaluated and compared to similar data in literature.

Thermal energy torage (TES) is a key enabling technology for the efficient exploitation of distributed generation systems based on renewable energy sources. Among the available options, research on latent heat TES (LHTES) solutions has been particularly active in the last decade, due to their ability to store and release high amounts of thermal energy in a very narrow temperature range. LHTES devices are based on phase change materials (PCMs), which act as thermal sinks or sources during their solid-to-liquid transition and vice-versa. As such, the development of reliable numerical tools for the prediction of the heat transfer and phase change characteristics of PCMs is of foremost importance, to help designing innovative and efficiently integrated LHTES implementations. In the present paper, the consolidated enthalpy-porosity (EP) method is compared to a novel lattice Boltzmann-phase field (LB-PF) algorithm in the simulation of a standard numerical benchmark for paraffin-like PCM melting problems. Performances and limitations of the two approaches are discussed, including the influence of model-related and purely numerical parameters. Outcomes from this study are used to confirm general guidelines for the application of well established methodologies, as well as to suggest new pathways for out-of-standard modeling techniques.

Computational Fluid Dynamics is nowadays largely employed as an effective optimization tool in the automotive industry, especially for what concerns aerodynamic design driven by critical factors such as the engine cooling system optimization and the reduction of drag forces, both limited by continuously changing stylistic constraints. The Ahmed reference model is a generic car-type bluff body with a slant back, which is frequently used as a benchmark test case by industrial as well as academic researchers, in order to investigate the performances of different turbulence modeling approaches. In spite of its relatively simple geometry, the Ahmed model possesses many of the typical aerodynamic features of a modern passenger car - a bluff body with separated boundary layers, recirculating flows and complex three-dimensional wake structures. Several experimental works have pointed out that the flow region which presents the major contribution to the overall aerodynamic drag is the wake flow behind the vehicle model: therefore, a more exact simulation of the wake and separation process seems to be essential for the accuracy of numerical drag predictions. As a consequence, a significant effort has been put in many computational studies carried out on the Ahmed model in the last two decades, in order to fix benefits and deficiencies of various turbulence modeling practices, from the steady-state RANS approach to the fully unsteady LES approach. Though now there are some generally accepted remarks, such as the difficulties encountered by some classical steady-state RANS models in giving accurate results for some critical flow regimes, it is authors' opinion that there are still some issues that need to be addressed, particularly for what concerns the differences and the possible improvements related to the passage from steady to unsteady approaches. In this paper a numerical investigation of turbulent flow around the Ahmed model, performed with the open-source CFD toolbox OpenFOAM®, is presented. Several URANS turbulence models, as well as different wall treatments, have been extensively tested on the notoriously critical 25° rear slant angle configuration of the Ahmed body. Simulations with the same models, but run in steady-state RANS mode, have been also provided in order to evaluate which kind of approach could be the best compromise as a sufficiently accurate and time-saving optimization tool for ground vehicle aerodynamic design. Drag predictions and other flow features, especially in terms of velocity profiles visualization in the rear region, have been critically compared with the experimental data available in the literature and with some prior numerical studies.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Batteries are the key elements for the massive electrification of the transport sector. With the rapidly growing popularity of electric vehicles, it is becoming increasingly important to characterize the behavior of battery packs through fast and accurate numerical models, in order to support experimental activities. A coupled electro-thermal simulation framework is required, as it is the only way to realistically represent the interactions between real world battery pack performances and the vehicle-level thermal management strategies. The purpose of this work is to pave the way for a comprehensive methodology for the development of a supporting modeling framework, to efficiently complement experiments in the optimal design and integration of battery packs.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">The full methodology consists of the following steps: i) an experimental analysis of the temperature and current dependence on various internal parameters of selected lithium-ion cells based on their electrochemical properties, ii) development and implementation of a battery cell electric model that takes into account the aforementioned dynamics and their dependencies; the electrical model is based on the Equivalent Circuit Model (ECM) and can be used to calculate the electrical output and losses of Li-ion cells as a function of state of charge and current; iii) development of a cell-level multi-domain computational framework for coupled electro-thermal simulations, based on state-of-the art CFD software tools; iv) validation and tuning of the multi-domain framework through ad-hoc designed experiments with controlled cell charge-discharge profiles and temperature measurement; v) extension of both the ECM and multi-domain approaches to full-scale battery packs, to be adopted for electric vehicle characterization under realistic driving conditions, with detailed battery thermal management.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">Results shown in the present paper cover steps i) to iv) and include a series of static and dynamic experimental tests with voltage response and temperature measurements performed on the selected Li-ion cells. It is shown that the proposed modeling tools can accurately predict the electro-thermal behavior of the cells under static and dynamic current conditions. Most of the average relative errors between predicted values and test values obtained do not exceed 10%.</div></div>

The purpose of this work is to pave the way for a comprehensive methodology for the development of a supporting modeling framework, to efficiently complement experiments in the optimal design and integration of battery packs.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">The full methodology consists of the following steps: i) an experimental analysis of the temperature and current dependence on various internal parameters of selected lithium-ion cells based on their electrochemical properties, ii) development and implementation of a battery cell electric model that takes into account the aforementioned dynamics and their dependencies; the electrical model is based on the Equivalent Circuit Model (ECM) and can be used to calculate the electrical output and losses of Li-ion cells as a function of state of charge and current; iii) development of a cell-level multi-domain computational framework for coupled electro-thermal simulations, based on state-of-the art CFD software tools; iv) validation and tuning of the multi-domain framework through ad-hoc designed experiments with controlled cell charge-discharge profiles and temperature measurement; v) extension of both the ECM and multi-domain approaches to full-scale battery packs, to be adopted for electric vehicle characterization under realistic driving conditions, with detailed battery thermal management.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">Results shown in the present paper cover steps i) to iv) and include a series of static and dynamic experimental tests with voltage response and temperature measurements performed on the selected Li-ion cells. It is shown that the proposed modeling tools can accurately predict the electro-thermal behavior of the cells under static and dynamic current conditions. Most of the average relative errors between predicted values and test values obtained do not exceed 10%.</div></div>

Turbulence modeling for fuel spray simulation plays a prominent role in the understanding of the flow behavior in Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs). Currently, a lot of research work is actively spent on Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence modeling as a replacement option of standard Reynolds averaged approaches in the Eulerian-Lagrangian spray modeling framework, due to its capability to accurately describe flow-induced spray variability and to the lower dependence of the results on the specific turbulence model and/or modeling coefficients. The introduction of LES poses, however, additional questions related to the implementation/adaptation of spray-related turbulence sources and to the rise of conflicting numerics and grid requirements between the Lagrangian and Eulerian parts of the simulated flow. About the latter, an efficient alternative might be found in hybrid URANS/LES formulations, which are still relatively unexplored for spray modeling applications and for ICE modeling in general. In this work, we conduct a systematic analysis aimed to assess the effects of several URANS, LES and hybrid turbulence modeling formulations on the spray dynamics. The hybrid form is based on a purposely developed version of the k-g URANS closure, and the simulation campaign is focused on a standard n-dodecane evaporating spray case in a constant volume vessel configuration. The spray is modeled within the Eulerian-Lagrangian framework, with primary and secondary breakup taken into account by means of the Kelvin-Helmholtz-Rayleigh-Taylor (KHRT) model. Further, we investigate on the effects due to the Stochastic Turbulence Dispersion (STD) of parcels. Numerical experiments are carried out via the open-source CFD code OpenFOAM. The results are validated against the baseline experimental data for evaporating ECN Spray A and with previous computational findings available in literature.
