Nanofluids have been receiving great attention in recent years due to their potential usage, not only as an enhanced thermophysical heat transfer fluid but also because of their great importance in applications such as drug delivery and oil recovery. Nevertheless, there are some challenges that need to be solved before nanofluids can become commercially acceptable. The main challenges of nanofluids are their stability and operational performance. Nanofluids stability is significantly important in order to maintain their thermophysical properties after fabrication for a long period of time. Therefore, enhancing nanofluids stability and understanding nanofluid behaviour are part of the chain needed to commercialise such type of advanced fluids. In this context, the aim of this article is to summarise the current progress on the study of nanofluids, such as the fabrication procedures, stability evaluation mechanism, stability enhancement procedures, nanofluids thermophysical properties, and current commercialisation challenges. Finally, the article identifies some possible opportunities for future research that can bridge the gap between in-lab research and commercialisation of nanofluids.

Spence;The operation of centrifugal pumps can generate instabilities and pressure pulsations that may be detrimental to the integrity and performance of the pump. In the present study a numerical investigation of the time variation of pressure within a complete centrifugal pump was undertaken. A range of parameters and three flow rates were investigated and the pulsations were extracted at 15 different locations covering important pump regions. The transient flow results compared reasonably with experimental data obtained in a limited experimental survey and clearly indicated the pump locations experiencing the largest pulsation levels. It was also noted that monitoring pulsations at the top dead centre of the pump volute casing would provide a better indication of internal pump pulsations than monitoring at the discharge.

Varying clearance, rotor-following seals are a key technology for meeting the demands of increased machine flexibility for conventional power units. These seals follow the rotor through hydrodynamic or hydrostatic mechanisms. Forward-facing step (FFS) and Rayleigh step designs are known to produce positive fluid stiffness. However, there is very limited modeling or experimental data available on the hydrostatic fluid forces generated from either design. A quasi-one-dimensional (1D) method has been developed to describe both designs and validated using test data. Tests have shown that the FFS and the Rayleigh step design are both capable of producing positive film stiffness and there is little difference in hydrostatic force generation between the two designs. This means any additional hydrodynamic features in the Rayleigh step design should have a limited effect on hydrostatic fluid stiffness. The analytical model is capable of modeling both the inertial fluid forces and the viscous fluid losses, and the predictions are in good agreement with the test data.

Although premature gearbox failures have plagued the wind turbine industry, and considerable research efforts continue to address this challenge, tidal turbine gearboxes are expected to experience higher mechanical failure rates given they will experience higher torque and thrust forces. In order to minimize the maintenance cost and prevent unexpected failures there exists a fundamental need for prognostic tools that can reliably estimate the current health and predict the future condition of the gearbox. This paper presents a life assessment methodology for tidal turbine gearboxes which was developed with synthetic data generated using a blade element momentum theory (BEMT) model. The latter has been used extensively for performance and load modelling of tidal turbines. The prognostic model developed was validated using experimental data.

Usually, the bearing vibration signals are dominated by those of other components such as gears and shafts. A good example of this scenario is the wind turbine gearbox which presents one of the most difficult bearing detection tasks. The non-stationary signal analysis is considered one of the main topics in the field of machinery fault diagnosis. In this paper, a set of signal processing techniques has been studied to investigate their feasibility for bearing fault detection in wind turbine gearbox. These techniques include statistical condition indicators, spectral kurtosis, and envelope analysis. The results of vibration analysis showed the possibility of bearing fault detection in wind turbine high-speed shafts using multiple signal processing techniques. However, among these signal processing techniques, spectral kurtosis followed by envelope analysis provides early fault detection compared to the other techniques employed. In addition, outer race bearing fault indicator provides clear indication of the crack severity and progress.

Teixeira; Abdulmajid Addali;Coolants play a major role in the performance of heat exchanging systems. In a marine gas turbine engine, an intercooler is used to reduce the compressed gas temperature between the compressor stages. The thermophysical properties of the coolant running within the intercooler directly influence the level of enhancement in the performance of the unit. Therefore, employing working fluids of exceptional thermal properties is beneficial for improving performance in such applications, compared to conventional fluids. This paper investigates the effect of utilizing nanofluids for enhancing the performance of a marine gas turbine intercooler. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-water with nanofluids at 0.01–0.10 vol % concentration were produced using a two-step controlled-temperature approach ranging from 10 °C to 50 °C. Next, the thermophysical properties of the as-prepared suspensions, such as density, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, and viscosity, were characterized. The intercooler performance was then determined by employing the measured data of the MWCNTs-based nanofluids thermophysical properties in theoretical formulae. This includes determining the intercooler effectiveness, heat transfer rate, gas outlet temperature, coolant outlet temperature, and pumping power. Finally, a comparison between a copper-based nanofluid from the literature with the as-prepared MWCNTs-based nanofluid was performed to determine the influence of each of these suspensions on the intercooler performance.

A suction-type compressor cascade tunnel with a plenum chamber was employed for investigating fouling blade effects. The tests showed that such a testing arrangement allows the extraction of pressure and corrected velocity distribution data downstream of the blades that is comparable with what can be obtained from blow-type cascade tunnels. This study presents experimental results for smooth clean cascade blades and for uniformly fouled blades. For all the cases considered, mid-span-corrected velocity distributions and pressure losses taken one chord downstream of the blades were investigated in order to identify the effects of fouling on the blades. The result of fouling on exit flow angle was investigated as well. In the present study, cascade clean and fouled cases were used to predict real engine performance. Results are obtained in terms of stage polytropic efficiency, thermal efficiency, useful power, and compressor efficiency deterioration. Roughening the cascade blades uniformly with particles of 254 μ m size, the compressor efficiency dropped by 7.7 percentage points.

In the application of film-riding sealing technology, there are various groove features that can be used to induce hydrodynamic lift. However, there is little guidance in selecting the relative parameter settings in order to maximize hydrodynamic load and fluid stiffness. In this study, two groove types are investigated—Rayleigh step and inclined groove. The study uses a design of experiments approach and a Reynolds equation solver to explore the design space. Key parameters have been identified that can be used to optimize a seal design. The results indicate that the relationship between parameters is not a simple linear relationship. It was also found that higher pressure drops hinder the hydrodynamic load and stiffness of the seal suggesting an advantage for using hydrostatic load support in such conditions.

A numerical approach was used to evaluate the liquid water film thickness and its motion on an axial flow compressor rotor blade under water ingestion conditions. By post-processing blading data and using computer programs to create the blades and their computational grid, the global computational domain of the first stage of an axial flow compressor was built. The flow field within the domain was solved by CFX-Tascflow, which is a commercial CFD code commonly used in turbomachinery. The computational domain consists of an extended inlet, an inlet guide vane, a rotor and a stator blade. Having solved the flow field at Design Point, the inlet guide vane blade was re-positioned to account for changes in idle speed. At that speed, the effects of water ingestion are expected to be more significant on gas turbine engine performance. Several cases with water ingestion were studied, changing parameters like water mass and compressor rotational speed. A FORTRAN computer program was created to calculate the water film height and speed. The extra torque needed by the compressor to keep running at the same rotational speed, was also calculated. The considerable increase in torque was confirmed by experimental observations according to which water ingestion had a detrimental effect on gas turbine operation.

Nanofluids have been receiving great attention in recent years due to their potential usage, not only as an enhanced thermophysical heat transfer fluid but also because of their great importance in applications such as drug delivery and oil recovery. Nevertheless, there are some challenges that need to be solved before nanofluids can become commercially acceptable. The main challenges of nanofluids are their stability and operational performance. Nanofluids stability is significantly important in order to maintain their thermophysical properties after fabrication for a long period of time. Therefore, enhancing nanofluids stability and understanding nanofluid behaviour are part of the chain needed to commercialise such type of advanced fluids. In this context, the aim of this article is to summarise the current progress on the study of nanofluids, such as the fabrication procedures, stability evaluation mechanism, stability enhancement procedures, nanofluids thermophysical properties, and current commercialisation challenges. Finally, the article identifies some possible opportunities for future research that can bridge the gap between in-lab research and commercialisation of nanofluids.

Spence;The operation of centrifugal pumps can generate instabilities and pressure pulsations that may be detrimental to the integrity and performance of the pump. In the present study a numerical investigation of the time variation of pressure within a complete centrifugal pump was undertaken. A range of parameters and three flow rates were investigated and the pulsations were extracted at 15 different locations covering important pump regions. The transient flow results compared reasonably with experimental data obtained in a limited experimental survey and clearly indicated the pump locations experiencing the largest pulsation levels. It was also noted that monitoring pulsations at the top dead centre of the pump volute casing would provide a better indication of internal pump pulsations than monitoring at the discharge.

Varying clearance, rotor-following seals are a key technology for meeting the demands of increased machine flexibility for conventional power units. These seals follow the rotor through hydrodynamic or hydrostatic mechanisms. Forward-facing step (FFS) and Rayleigh step designs are known to produce positive fluid stiffness. However, there is very limited modeling or experimental data available on the hydrostatic fluid forces generated from either design. A quasi-one-dimensional (1D) method has been developed to describe both designs and validated using test data. Tests have shown that the FFS and the Rayleigh step design are both capable of producing positive film stiffness and there is little difference in hydrostatic force generation between the two designs. This means any additional hydrodynamic features in the Rayleigh step design should have a limited effect on hydrostatic fluid stiffness. The analytical model is capable of modeling both the inertial fluid forces and the viscous fluid losses, and the predictions are in good agreement with the test data.

Although premature gearbox failures have plagued the wind turbine industry, and considerable research efforts continue to address this challenge, tidal turbine gearboxes are expected to experience higher mechanical failure rates given they will experience higher torque and thrust forces. In order to minimize the maintenance cost and prevent unexpected failures there exists a fundamental need for prognostic tools that can reliably estimate the current health and predict the future condition of the gearbox. This paper presents a life assessment methodology for tidal turbine gearboxes which was developed with synthetic data generated using a blade element momentum theory (BEMT) model. The latter has been used extensively for performance and load modelling of tidal turbines. The prognostic model developed was validated using experimental data.

Usually, the bearing vibration signals are dominated by those of other components such as gears and shafts. A good example of this scenario is the wind turbine gearbox which presents one of the most difficult bearing detection tasks. The non-stationary signal analysis is considered one of the main topics in the field of machinery fault diagnosis. In this paper, a set of signal processing techniques has been studied to investigate their feasibility for bearing fault detection in wind turbine gearbox. These techniques include statistical condition indicators, spectral kurtosis, and envelope analysis. The results of vibration analysis showed the possibility of bearing fault detection in wind turbine high-speed shafts using multiple signal processing techniques. However, among these signal processing techniques, spectral kurtosis followed by envelope analysis provides early fault detection compared to the other techniques employed. In addition, outer race bearing fault indicator provides clear indication of the crack severity and progress.

In a marine gas turbine engine, an intercooler is used to reduce the compressed gas temperature between the compressor stages. The thermophysical properties of the coolant running within the intercooler directly influence the level of enhancement in the performance of the unit. Therefore, employing working fluids of exceptional thermal properties is beneficial for improving performance in such applications, compared to conventional fluids. This paper investigates the effect of utilizing nanofluids for enhancing the performance of a marine gas turbine intercooler. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-water with nanofluids at 0.01–0.10 vol % concentration were produced using a two-step controlled-temperature approach ranging from 10 °C to 50 °C. Next, the thermophysical properties of the as-prepared suspensions, such as density, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, and viscosity, were characterized. The intercooler performance was then determined by employing the measured data of the MWCNTs-based nanofluids thermophysical properties in theoretical formulae. This includes determining the intercooler effectiveness, heat transfer rate, gas outlet temperature, coolant outlet temperature, and pumping power. Finally, a comparison between a copper-based nanofluid from the literature with the as-prepared MWCNTs-based nanofluid was performed to determine the influence of each of these suspensions on the intercooler performance.

A suction-type compressor cascade tunnel with a plenum chamber was employed for investigating fouling blade effects. The tests showed that such a testing arrangement allows the extraction of pressure and corrected velocity distribution data downstream of the blades that is comparable with what can be obtained from blow-type cascade tunnels. This study presents experimental results for smooth clean cascade blades and for uniformly fouled blades. For all the cases considered, mid-span-corrected velocity distributions and pressure losses taken one chord downstream of the blades were investigated in order to identify the effects of fouling on the blades. The result of fouling on exit flow angle was investigated as well. In the present study, cascade clean and fouled cases were used to predict real engine performance. Results are obtained in terms of stage polytropic efficiency, thermal efficiency, useful power, and compressor efficiency deterioration. Roughening the cascade blades uniformly with particles of 254 μ m size, the compressor efficiency dropped by 7.7 percentage points.

In the application of film-riding sealing technology, there are various groove features that can be used to induce hydrodynamic lift. However, there is little guidance in selecting the relative parameter settings in order to maximize hydrodynamic load and fluid stiffness. In this study, two groove types are investigated—Rayleigh step and inclined groove. The study uses a design of experiments approach and a Reynolds equation solver to explore the design space. Key parameters have been identified that can be used to optimize a seal design. The results indicate that the relationship between parameters is not a simple linear relationship. It was also found that higher pressure drops hinder the hydrodynamic load and stiffness of the seal suggesting an advantage for using hydrostatic load support in such conditions.

A numerical approach was used to evaluate the liquid water film thickness and its motion on an axial flow compressor rotor blade under water ingestion conditions. By post-processing blading data and using computer programs to create the blades and their computational grid, the global computational domain of the first stage of an axial flow compressor was built. The flow field within the domain was solved by CFX-Tascflow, which is a commercial CFD code commonly used in turbomachinery. The computational domain consists of an extended inlet, an inlet guide vane, a rotor and a stator blade. Having solved the flow field at Design Point, the inlet guide vane blade was re-positioned to account for changes in idle speed. At that speed, the effects of water ingestion are expected to be more significant on gas turbine engine performance. Several cases with water ingestion were studied, changing parameters like water mass and compressor rotational speed. A FORTRAN computer program was created to calculate the water film height and speed. The extra torque needed by the compressor to keep running at the same rotational speed, was also calculated. The considerable increase in torque was confirmed by experimental observations according to which water ingestion had a detrimental effect on gas turbine operation.
