The laser performance of a 5% Yb doped Lu2SiO5 (Yb:LSO) has been investigated in quasi continuous-wave pumping regime along the three principal dielectric axes of the crystal, to obtain a complete characterization of its laser properties. The comparison among the obtained results for differently polarized lasers, in term of relative slope efficiency and absolute efficiency, allows the exploitability of different orientations of the material in order to be determined to obtain efficient laser sources. The laser slope efficiency and the energy conversion efficiency were similar for emission polarized along the three indicatrix axes, with noticeable maximum values of slope efficiency around 90% for polarization along the Y and Z axes. Tunable laser action has been obtained in the range 990 nm - 1084 nm, with sizeable differences in the shape of the tuning curve for polarization along the X, Y and Z axes. In particular, the tuning for polarization along the Z axis is relatively flat and uniform in the range 1023 nm - 1083 nm.

A highly prospective drug for the X-ray induced photodynamic therapy (PDTX), LuAG:Pr3+@SiO2-PpIX nanocomposite, was successfully prepared by a three step process: photo-induced precipitation of the Lu3Al5O12:Pr3+ (LuAG:Pr3+) core, sol-gel technique for amorphous silica coating, and a biofunctionalization by attaching the protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) molecules. The synthesis procedure provides three-layer nanocomposite with uniform shells covering an intensely luminescent core. Room temperature radioluminescence (RT RL) spectra as well as photoluminescence (RT PL) steady-state and time resolved spectra of the material confirm the non-radiative energy transfer from the core Pr3+ ions to the PpIX outer layer. First, excitation of Pr3+ ions results in the red luminescence of PpIX. Second, the decay measurements exhibit clear evidence of mentioned non-radiative energy transfer (ET). The singlet oxygen generation in the system was demonstrated by the 3'-(p-aminophenyl) fluorescein (APF) chemical probe sensitive to the singlet oxygen presence. The RT PL spectra of an X-ray irradiated material with the APF probe manifest the formation of singlet oxygen due to which enhanced luminescence around 530 nm is observed. Quenching studies, using NaN3 as an 1O2 inhibitor, also confirm the presence of 1O2 in the system and rule out the parasitic reaction with OH radicals. To summarize, presented features of LuAG:Pr3+@SiO2-PpIX nanocomposite indicate its considerable potential for PDTX application.

Yb:Sc(2)O(3) ceramic sample. Under end- pumping at 933 nm and 968 nm in quasi-CW mode, at 1040.5 nm the laser delivers a maximum output power of 4.3 W and 1.77 W, respectively with a corresponding slope efficiency of 74% and 80%, which are, to the best of our knowledge, the highest value reported in literature for ceramics. We explored the tuning range of the sample, which spans from 1005 nm to 1050.5 nm, and finally we characterized the low losses tunable cavity at 1032 nm.

The conclusion is made that no low-temperature quenching of the Ce3+ - related photoluminescence takes place. In both the undoped and the Ce3+ - doped crystals, temperature dependences of the X-ray excited recombination luminescence intensity correlate with the position and shape of thermally stimulated luminescence glow curve peaks of the hole origin. Low-temperature quenching of the X-ray excited luminescence in these crystals is explained by the fact that at low temperatures, free holes are trapped at oxygen ions while electrons are trapped at various intrinsic defects. In Ce3+ - doped Gd3(Ga,Al)5O12 crystals, thermally stimulated release of the trapped holes and electrons and their subsequent recombination at Ce3+ ions result in the enhancement of the Ce3+ - related electron recombination luminescence with the increasing temperature in the 10–180 K range.

The sensitization of scintillation was investigated in crosslinked polymeric composite materials loaded with luminescent gold clusters aggregates acting as sensitizers, and with organic dye rhodamine 6G as the emitting species. The evolution in time of the excited states population in the systems is described by a set of coupled rate equations, in which steady state solution allowed obtainment of an expression of the sensitization efficacy as a function of the characteristic parameters of the employed luminescent systems. The results obtained indicate that the realization of sensitizer/emitter scintillating complexes is the strategy that must be pursued to maximize the sensitization effect in composite materials.

Abstract Optical properties of yttria-aluminoborate (YAB) glasses with general composition 10(CexTbyY(1-x-y))-30Al2O3-60B2O3 are investigated and compared with data available on YAB crystals with huntite-like structure. Ce doped samples show optical features ascribable to preferential location of rare earth ions in sites with specific geometry similar to that observed in crystalline structures. Samples prepared with Tb ions as emission activator and Ce ions as sensitizer have been studied within the framework of non-radiative energy transfer. The resulting Forster radius is of 4.6 ± 0.5 A comparable with that observed in Ce/Tb co-doped YAl3(BO3)4 crystals. The investigated materials possess radio- and photoluminescence emission efficiencies and performances comparable to that of crystalline counterparts with the advantage of having easiness of preparation and workability typical of glassy systems.

No remarkable absorption due to unfavorable impurity was observed from optical absorption measurements in the vacuum ultra-violet spectral region. The high crystallinity and homogeneous Nd3+ distribution were found from X-ray rocking curve analysis and chemical composition analysis respectively. X-ray excited luminescence spectrum was measured and the significant 4f25d-4f3 luminescence at 173 nm was obtained from the grown crystal. The pulse height spectrum and scintillation decay curve were taken upon gamma-ray irradiation. As a result, grown crystal showed sufficient response to the gamma-ray and its scintillation decay was determined as fast as 7.6 nsec.

The laser performance of a 5% Yb doped Lu2SiO5 (Yb:LSO) has been investigated in quasi continuous-wave pumping regime along the three principal dielectric axes of the crystal, to obtain a complete characterization of its laser properties. The comparison among the obtained results for differently polarized lasers, in term of relative slope efficiency and absolute efficiency, allows the exploitability of different orientations of the material in order to be determined to obtain efficient laser sources. The laser slope efficiency and the energy conversion efficiency were similar for emission polarized along the three indicatrix axes, with noticeable maximum values of slope efficiency around 90% for polarization along the Y and Z axes. Tunable laser action has been obtained in the range 990 nm - 1084 nm, with sizeable differences in the shape of the tuning curve for polarization along the X, Y and Z axes. In particular, the tuning for polarization along the Z axis is relatively flat and uniform in the range 1023 nm - 1083 nm.

A highly prospective drug for the X-ray induced photodynamic therapy (PDTX), LuAG:Pr3+@SiO2-PpIX nanocomposite, was successfully prepared by a three step process: photo-induced precipitation of the Lu3Al5O12:Pr3+ (LuAG:Pr3+) core, sol-gel technique for amorphous silica coating, and a biofunctionalization by attaching the protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) molecules. The synthesis procedure provides three-layer nanocomposite with uniform shells covering an intensely luminescent core. Room temperature radioluminescence (RT RL) spectra as well as photoluminescence (RT PL) steady-state and time resolved spectra of the material confirm the non-radiative energy transfer from the core Pr3+ ions to the PpIX outer layer. First, excitation of Pr3+ ions results in the red luminescence of PpIX. Second, the decay measurements exhibit clear evidence of mentioned non-radiative energy transfer (ET). The singlet oxygen generation in the system was demonstrated by the 3'-(p-aminophenyl) fluorescein (APF) chemical probe sensitive to the singlet oxygen presence. The RT PL spectra of an X-ray irradiated material with the APF probe manifest the formation of singlet oxygen due to which enhanced luminescence around 530 nm is observed. Quenching studies, using NaN3 as an 1O2 inhibitor, also confirm the presence of 1O2 in the system and rule out the parasitic reaction with OH radicals. To summarize, presented features of LuAG:Pr3+@SiO2-PpIX nanocomposite indicate its considerable potential for PDTX application.

Under end- pumping at 933 nm and 968 nm in quasi-CW mode, at 1040.5 nm the laser delivers a maximum output power of 4.3 W and 1.77 W, respectively with a corresponding slope efficiency of 74% and 80%, which are, to the best of our knowledge, the highest value reported in literature for ceramics. We explored the tuning range of the sample, which spans from 1005 nm to 1050.5 nm, and finally we characterized the low losses tunable cavity at 1032 nm.

The conclusion is made that no low-temperature quenching of the Ce3+ - related photoluminescence takes place. In both the undoped and the Ce3+ - doped crystals, temperature dependences of the X-ray excited recombination luminescence intensity correlate with the position and shape of thermally stimulated luminescence glow curve peaks of the hole origin. Low-temperature quenching of the X-ray excited luminescence in these crystals is explained by the fact that at low temperatures, free holes are trapped at oxygen ions while electrons are trapped at various intrinsic defects. In Ce3+ - doped Gd3(Ga,Al)5O12 crystals, thermally stimulated release of the trapped holes and electrons and their subsequent recombination at Ce3+ ions result in the enhancement of the Ce3+ - related electron recombination luminescence with the increasing temperature in the 10–180 K range.

The sensitization of scintillation was investigated in crosslinked polymeric composite materials loaded with luminescent gold clusters aggregates acting as sensitizers, and with organic dye rhodamine 6G as the emitting species. The evolution in time of the excited states population in the systems is described by a set of coupled rate equations, in which steady state solution allowed obtainment of an expression of the sensitization efficacy as a function of the characteristic parameters of the employed luminescent systems. The results obtained indicate that the realization of sensitizer/emitter scintillating complexes is the strategy that must be pursued to maximize the sensitization effect in composite materials.

Abstract Optical properties of yttria-aluminoborate (YAB) glasses with general composition 10(CexTbyY(1-x-y))-30Al2O3-60B2O3 are investigated and compared with data available on YAB crystals with huntite-like structure. Ce doped samples show optical features ascribable to preferential location of rare earth ions in sites with specific geometry similar to that observed in crystalline structures. Samples prepared with Tb ions as emission activator and Ce ions as sensitizer have been studied within the framework of non-radiative energy transfer. The resulting Forster radius is of 4.6 ± 0.5 A comparable with that observed in Ce/Tb co-doped YAl3(BO3)4 crystals. The investigated materials possess radio- and photoluminescence emission efficiencies and performances comparable to that of crystalline counterparts with the advantage of having easiness of preparation and workability typical of glassy systems.

No remarkable absorption due to unfavorable impurity was observed from optical absorption measurements in the vacuum ultra-violet spectral region. The high crystallinity and homogeneous Nd3+ distribution were found from X-ray rocking curve analysis and chemical composition analysis respectively. X-ray excited luminescence spectrum was measured and the significant 4f25d-4f3 luminescence at 173 nm was obtained from the grown crystal. The pulse height spectrum and scintillation decay curve were taken upon gamma-ray irradiation. As a result, grown crystal showed sufficient response to the gamma-ray and its scintillation decay was determined as fast as 7.6 nsec.
