description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2020Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Nirmal K. Manna; Naim Hossain; Koushik Ghosh;Abstract In the present work, a natural circulation boiler of a typical 210 MW thermal power plant is investigated with an objective to provide the feasible, reliable, and safe design solution of the riser-downcomer circuit. A thermo-geometric analysis of a riser-downcomer circuit of a typical subcritical boiler is carried out for a specified steam generation rate, based on a two-phase flow model. The developed model is validated with the available experimental/numerical data, satisfactorily. The model takes care of a detailed flow regime map, is capable of identifying DNB and CHF points, and can estimate a typical temperature rise of riser tubes under any flow regimes. The safe and unsafe zones of operations of heated riser tubes have been identified quantitatively and accordingly a range of feasible design solutions are demonstrated in a tabular form. The tube numbers, lengths, and especially the diameters and thicknesses are provided in compliance with the ASME boiler code. We would like to emphasize that the objective of this work is not to select a single design, rather provide a number of flexible solutions, which can be utilized by researchers, manufacturers, and practicing engineers, according to their needs.

This type of situation is encountered during post-accident situations in nuclear reactors and involves augmentation of heat removal capacity with forced coolant injection from the bottom. A steady-state analysis is carried out with the assumption of laminar flow regime and without accounting for phase change. Darcy-Brinkmann-Forchheimer approximation and local thermal equilibrium assumption are adopted for modelling the momentum and energy equations in porous media, respectively. It is observed that the fluid flow is determined based on the dominancy of the two co-existing flow mechanisms viz. inertial flow due to forced fluid injection and buoyancy-driven flow due to heat generation within the porous bed. In addition, permeability of the porous media significantly affects the flow mechanism, especially near the fluid inlet. Heat transfer characteristics closely follow the flow mechanism established within the enclosure.

The complex phenomena of multiphase flow through porous media, coupled with the associated heat and mass transfer processes, is modelled numerically and implemented in a general computational platform with the help of user-defined functions. The model is validated extensively with experimental data and utilised for analysing heat removal from a heat-generating porous bed submerged in a liquid pool. This is in contrast to the various specialised numerical codes that have been specifically developed for modelling these phenomena. The study analyses the fundamental impacts of bed porosity, particle size and bed configuration on heat transfer and multiphase flow mechanism in the heat-generating porous bed. Bed porosity and particle size are observed to influence both fluid transport and heat transfer mechanisms, while bed composition is observed to mainly affect the fluid transport process. These effects, as such, influence heat removal from the heat-generating porous bed, which is quantified in terms of the maximum temperature rise within the bed and the ultimate energy removal possible from the bed. The latter is represented in terms of dryout power density, which represents the minimum volumetric heat generation at which it becomes impossible to ensure adequate heat removal from the bed. Assessment of dryout power density, as such, is very important in the context of heat removal and safety of the related applications. Increase in particle size as well as porosity is observed to augment this limit. The influence of bed composition on this limit is observed to be determined by the interplay of two parameters bed height and interface area of the bed with the surrounding liquid pool.

The effect of insertion of single adjustor rod at the peak heat generation region is modeled as two heat sources and one heat sink. The results obtained from the developed model indicate that insertion of adjuster rods beyond a critical number (3–4); flattening effect does not improve much. The peak surface and centerline temperatures of fuel pin are observed to show a cyclic variation and shift towards end as compared to unadjusted profile. Results are in accordance with the best estimate RELAP code.

This is achieved using a multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model that is implemented in the framework of the commercial CFD platform ANSYS FLUENT. The model is extensively validated with available experimental data on two different aspects: pressure drop in two-phase flow through porous media and prediction of dryout in typical porous debris beds. A wide range of system pressure, relevant to severe accident conditions, is considered in this analysis in order to obtain a thorough understanding of its impact on multiphase flow and dryout occurrence in porous debris beds. This analysis is performed for different subcoolings of flooding water, which gives additional knowledge on the effects of coolant subcooling on dryout occurrence. Results indicate that dryout in debris beds occurs at progressively higher power densities as the system pressure is raised. Similar effects are observed with increase in liquid subcooling as well.

In this paper, an entropy generation analysis has been carried out for assessment of the performance of an infinite triangular as well as a square subchannel for single-phase forced turbulent flow. The performance is evaluated with the objective function being the overall entropy generation in a central subchannel. Various constraints such as dimensionless flow area subtended by the array of rods, pitch to diameter ratio for the configuration of rod bundles and volumetric heat generation to power density ratio of the subchannel imposed by power restrictions have been considered. The parameters include the dimensionless wall heat flux, duty parameter, length to diameter ratio for fuel rods, Reynolds number etc. It has been observed that for a pitch to diameter ratio constraint the square subchannel generates lesser amount of entropy and thus more acceptable compared to triangular structure. For the same constraint the optimum Reynolds number shifts towards higher value compared to triangular one. For dimensionless flow area constraint, on the other hand, the analysis reveals completely reverse phenomenon.

Manna; Naim Hossain;Abstract In the present work, in order to investigate and solve the issue associated with the circulation ratio (CR) for naturally assisted utility boilers, analysis of the boiler riser downcomer circuit has been performed for the whole range of operating pressure that supports natural circulation. This is done by developing a two phase flow model suitable for thermosyphon circuit analysis. The model is well validated with available numerical and experimental data for thermosyphon loop and practical boiler. In compliance with the industrial need, the tubes of boiler system are chosen based on the ASME boiler code. A set of case study of practical boilers has been conducted to determine the minimum possible safe circulation ratio for each separate case. Finally the computed circulation ratios are plotted against the operating pressure ranging from 5 to 180 bar. The trend of variation is discussed along with the discussion of safe operating range, considering the issue of vulnerability of tube overheating. The overheating of tube wall is correlated with the critical circulation ratio. The range of minimum safe CR is identified for low, medium and high operating pressure natural circulation boilers.

The present work investigates the thermal aspects of a differentially heated porous square enclosure in the presence of an adiabatic block of different block sizes utilizing Darcy–Rayleigh number in the range of 1–10,000 with Darcy number $$10^{-2}$$ – $$10^{-6}$$ . Heatlines and Nusselt number, streamlines, and entropy generation are used for the analysis of heat transfer, flow circulation, and irreversibility production in the enclosure. The study reveals that the presence of an adiabatic block affects the heat transfer process severely, and three different zones of heat transfer are identified. These are namely the zone of heat transfer augmentation, the zone of heat transfer augmentation along with entropy generation reduction, and the zone of both heat transfer and entropy generation reduction. It is also found that the presence of an adiabatic block can enhance heat transfer up to a certain critical block size; thereafter, further increasing in block size reduces the heat transfer rate. An optimal block size where the heat transfer enhancement is maximum is observed to be smaller than the critical block size. The study demonstrates the analyses of heat transfer and entropy generation for a better thermal design of a system. This study is also extended for higher Prandtl number fluids.

These conditions for such systems are often proposed by minimizing the destroyed exergy potential in course of the process. In the present paper a second law analysis is done for a nuclear fuel element inside a concentric annular coolant passage. The entropy generation analysis has been carried out through a conjugate approach, with steady state temperature profiles within the fuel element and a thermodynamic approach within fluid. The effect of solid core heat generation and the temperature gradients inside solid core, fuel - clad gap and cladding are considered as well along with the irreversibilities arising out of fluid flow under turbulent condition. The effect of Reynolds number, duty parameter, diameter ratio, Biot number, dimensionless heat flux and thermal conductivity ratios on overall entropy generation characteristics have been investigated and interpreted physically. The validation of the present calculations was confirmed by best-estimate thermal-hydraulic code RELAP. The new thermodynamic design methodology presented in this paper adheres to the safety limits in temperature. The present analysis can be extended for complex fuel pellet arrangements in subchannel structures by an “equivalent annulus model”.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2020Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Nirmal K.
