However, many organisms experience environmental conditions that differ substantially from those captured by these macroclimatic (i.e. free air) temperature grids. In forests, the tree canopy functions as a thermal insulator and buffers sub‐canopy microclimatic conditions, thereby affecting biological and ecological processes. To improve the assessment of climatic conditions and climate‐change‐related impacts on forest‐floor biodiversity and functioning, high‐resolution temperature grids reflecting forest microclimates are thus urgently needed. Combining more than 1200 time series of in situ near‐surface forest temperature with topographical, biological and macroclimatic variables in a machine learning model, we predicted the mean monthly offset between sub‐canopy temperature at 15 cm above the surface and free‐air temperature over the period 2000–2020 at a spatial resolution of 25 m across Europe. This offset was used to evaluate the difference between microclimate and macroclimate across space and seasons and finally enabled us to calculate mean annual and monthly temperatures for European forest understories. We found that sub‐canopy air temperatures differ substantially from free‐air temperatures, being on average 2.1°C (standard deviation ± 1.6°C) lower in summer and 2.0°C higher (±0.7°C) in winter across Europe. Additionally, our high‐resolution maps expose considerable microclimatic variation within landscapes, not captured by the gridded macroclimatic products. The provided forest sub‐canopy temperature maps will enable future research to model below‐canopy biological processes and patterns, as well as species distributions more accurately.

This data package contains high accuracy CO2 dry air mole fractions from 39 ICOS European observatories at in total 95 observation levels, collected by the ICOS Atmosphere Thematic Centre (ATC) and provided by the station contributors. The package includes the 2025.1 FastTrack update of the Globalview EU data product and is intended for use in carbon cycle inverse modeling, model evaluation, and satellite validation studies. Cependant, les relations directement observées entre le climat et l'échange de CO2 terrestre avec l'atmosphère à travers les biomes et les continents font défaut. Nous présentons ici des données décrivant les relations entre l'échange net de carbone par les écosystèmes (NEE) et les facteurs climatiques tels que mesurés à l'aide de la méthode de covariance de Foucault sur 125 sites uniques dans divers écosystèmes sur six continents avec un total de 559 années de site. Nous trouvons que le NEE observé aux sites de covariance tourbillonnaire est (1) une fonction forte de la température annuelle moyenne aux latitudes moyennes et élevées, (2) une fonction forte de la sécheresse aux latitudes moyennes et basses, et (3) une fonction à la fois de la température et de la sécheresse autour de la ceinture moyenne-latitudinale (45°N). La sensibilité du NEE à la température annuelle moyenne se décompose à ~ 16 °C (une valeur seuil de la température annuelle moyenne), au-delà de laquelle aucune augmentation supplémentaire de l'absorption de CO2 avec la température n'a été observée et la sécheresse influence les règles de dépassement de l'influence de la température. Understanding the relationships between climate and carbon exchange by terrestrial ecosystems is critical to predict future levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide because of the potential accelerating effects of positive climate–carbon cycle feedbacks. However, directly observed relationships between climate and terrestrial CO2 exchange with the atmosphere across biomes and continents are lacking. Here we present data describing the relationships between net ecosystem exchange of carbon (NEE) and climate factors as measured using the eddy covariance method at 125 unique sites in various ecosystems over six continents with a total of 559 site-years. We find that NEE observed at eddy covariance sites is (1) a strong function of mean annual temperature at mid- and high-latitudes, (2) a strong function of dryness at mid- and low-latitudes, and (3) a function of both temperature and dryness around the mid-latitudinal belt (45°N). This data package contains high accuracy CO2 dry air mole fractions from 65 ICOS and non-ICOS European observatories at in total 146 observation levels, collected by the ICOS Atmosphere Thematic Centre (ATC) and provided by the station contributors. The package is the second 2024 update of the Globalview EU data product (version 9.2), released in 2023 and is intended for use in carbon cycle inverse modeling, model evaluation, and satellite validation studies. However, many organisms experience environmental conditions that differ substantially from those captured by these macroclimatic (i.e. free air) temperature grids. In forests, the tree canopy functions as a thermal insulator and buffers sub‐canopy microclimatic conditions, thereby affecting biological and ecological processes. To improve the assessment of climatic conditions and climate‐change‐related impacts on forest‐floor biodiversity and functioning, high‐resolution temperature grids reflecting forest microclimates are thus urgently needed. Combining more than 1200 time series of in situ near‐surface forest temperature with topographical, biological and macroclimatic variables in a machine learning model, we predicted the mean monthly offset between sub‐canopy temperature at 15 cm above the surface and free‐air temperature over the period 2000–2020 at a spatial resolution of 25 m across Europe. This offset was used to evaluate the difference between microclimate and macroclimate across space and seasons and finally enabled us to calculate mean annual and monthly temperatures for European forest understories. We found that sub‐canopy air temperatures differ substantially from free‐air temperatures, being on average 2.1°C (standard deviation ± 1.6°C) lower in summer and 2.0°C higher (±0.7°C) in winter across Europe. Additionally, our high‐resolution maps expose considerable microclimatic variation within landscapes, not captured by the gridded macroclimatic products. The provided forest sub‐canopy temperature maps will enable future research to model below‐canopy biological processes and patterns, as well as species distributions more accurately.

Cependant, les relations directement observées entre le climat et l'échange de CO2 terrestre avec l'atmosphère à travers les biomes et les continents font défaut. Nous présentons ici des données décrivant les relations entre l'échange net de carbone par les écosystèmes (NEE) et les facteurs climatiques tels que mesurés à l'aide de la méthode de covariance de Foucault sur 125 sites uniques dans divers écosystèmes sur six continents avec un total de 559 années de site. Nous trouvons que le NEE observé aux sites de covariance tourbillonnaire est (1) une fonction forte de la température annuelle moyenne aux latitudes moyennes et élevées, (2) une fonction forte de la sécheresse aux latitudes moyennes et basses, et (3) une fonction à la fois de la température et de la sécheresse autour de la ceinture moyenne-latitudinale (45°N). Understanding the relationships between climate and carbon exchange by terrestrial ecosystems is critical to predict future levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide because of the potential accelerating effects of positive climate–carbon cycle feedbacks. However, directly observed relationships between climate and terrestrial CO2 exchange with the atmosphere across biomes and continents are lacking. Here we present data describing the relationships between net ecosystem exchange of carbon (NEE) and climate factors as measured using the eddy covariance method at 125 unique sites in various ecosystems over six continents with a total of 559 site-years. We find that NEE observed at eddy covariance sites is (1) a strong function of mean annual temperature at mid- and high-latitudes, (2) a strong function of dryness at mid- and low-latitudes, and (3) a function of both temperature and dryness around the mid-latitudinal belt (45°N). This data package contains high accuracy CO2 dry air mole fractions from 65 ICOS and non-ICOS European observatories at in total 146 observation levels, collected by the ICOS Atmosphere Thematic Centre (ATC) and provided by the station contributors. The package is part of the Globalview EU data product, released in 2023 and is intended for use in carbon cycle inverse modeling, model evaluation, and satellite validation studies. Please report errors and send comments regarding this product to the ObsPack originators. Please read carefully the ObsPack Fair Use statement and cite appropriately.
