Wietler; Byungsul Min; Sina Reiter; Yevgeniya Larionova; Rolf Reineke-Koch; Frank Heinemeyer; Rolf Brendel; Armin Feldhoff; Jan Krugener; Dominic Tetzlaff; Robby Peibst; We investigate the enhancement in transparency and conductivity of aluminum doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Al) layers upon high-temperature annealing and its impact on contact resistance, as well as, on passivation properties of carrier selective junctions based on doped polycrystalline Si on a passivating silicon oxide (POLO). The temperature stability of these junctions allows annealing of the ZnO:Al/POLO combination up to 600 °C. We prepare ZnO:Al films by dc magnetron sputtering at room temperature. We determine the complex refractive index of ZnO:Al in dependence of post-deposition annealing (PDA) temperature by spectroscopic ellipsometry. High-temperature annealing improves the conductivity and reduces the absorption within ZnO:Al. The optical losses in a ZnO:Al/POLO stack are rather limited by the poly-Si layer than by the ZnO:Al. The sheet resistance improves from roughly 20 000 Ω/sq for 80 nm thick as-deposited ZnO:Al films to 72 Ω/sq after fast firing at 600 °C. At the same time, PDA cures the damage induced in the POLO junctions during ZnO:Al deposition. After PDA with AlxOy capping layers, the passivation quality even surpasses the initial level. A transmission electron microscopy analysis of the interface between the ZnO:Al and the underlying poly-Si reveals the formation of a silicon oxide like interfacial layer after PDA at 400 °C. This interfacial layer causes a high contact resistivity of the metal/ZnO:Al/POLO-junction and could limit the thermal budget for cell processing. Our results indicate that after successful process adjustment, ZnO:Al could substitute In-based transparent conductive oxides on POLO cells for cost reasons, as well as, enable a high efficiency potential.

Bahnemann; W. Ramadan; Armin Feldhoff;Abstract Oxygen evolution is kinetically the key step in the photocatalytic water splitting, but it is negatively affected by the poor charge transport properties. However, this can be modified by the loading of cocatalysts on the surface of a semiconductor which could form heterojunctions to boost the charge separation and lower the activation potential for O2 evolution. In this paper we demonstrate that the poor O2 evolution activity of photocatalytic water splitting of the multiferroics BiFeO3 can be enhanced when a proper cocatalyst like IrO2 nanoparticles are deposited on the surface and proper electron scavenger is used. The choice of the persulfate, S2O8 as electron scavenger is influenced by its high redox potential and its close position to the valence band of BiFeO3 compared to other commonly used scavengers. Another interesting information was revealed by using transient absorption spectroscopy under different environment namely, inert, oxidizing and reducing. The absorption peak of holes was identified and correlated to the strong absorption around 560 nm The hole absorption peak showed a 50% decrease in the absorption intensity after 2.5 μsec indicating that holes are captured by IrO2 nanoparticles on the surface. O2 evolution of multiferroics, especially BiFeO3 has been less investigated. Therefore, the development of efficient photocatalytic materials has relied on both photocatalysts and cocatalysts. Identification of the photogenerated charge absorption peak from transient absorption spectra facilitate the evaluation of the IrO2 loading effect on the charge separation and the overall O2 evolution process.

Thus, comprehension and optimization of the properties and the design of a TE module are important tasks. In this work, different geometry optimization strategies to reach maximum power output or maximum conversion efficiency are applied and the resulting performances of various modules and respective materials are analyzed. A Bi2Te3-based module, a half-Heusler-based module, and an oxide-based module are characterized via FEM simulations. By this, a deviation of optimum power output and optimum conversion efficiency in dependence of the diversity of thermoelectric materials is found. Additionally, for all modules, the respective fluxes of entropy and charge as well as the corresponding fluxes of thermal and electrical energy within the thermolegs are shown. The full understanding and enhancement of the performance of a TE module may be further improved.

Here, it is reported that nitrogen doping can simultaneously and significantly improve both the immobilization and catalyzation effects of Co9S8 nanoparticles in Li‐S batteries. Combining the theoretical calculations with experimental investigations, it is revealed that nitrogen atoms can increase the binding energies between LiPSs and Co9S8, and as well as alleviate the sluggish kinetics of Li‐S chemistry in the Li2S6 cathode. The same effects are also observed when adding N‐Co9S8 nanoparticles into the commercial Li2S cathode (which has various intrinsic advantages, but unfortunately a high overpotential). A remarkable improvement in the battery performances in both cases is observed. The work brings heteroatom‐doped Co9S8 to the attention of designing high‐performance Li‐S batteries. A fundamental understanding of the inhibition of LiPSs shuttle and the catalytic effect of Li2S in the newly developed system may encourage more effort along this interesting direction.

AbstractGeometry, design, and processing in addition to the thermoelectric material properties have a significant influence on the economic efficiency and performance of thermoelectric generators (TEGs). While conventional BULK TEGs are elaborate to manufacture and allow only limited variations in geometry, printed TEGs are often restricted in their application and processing temperature due to the use of organic materials. In this work, a proof‐of‐concept for fabricating modular, customizable, and temperature‐stable TEGs is demonstrated by applying an alternative laser process. For this purpose, low temperature cofired ceramics substrates were coated over a large area, freely structured and cut without masks by a laser and sintered to a solid structure in a single optimized thermal post‐processing. A scalable design with complex geometry and large cooling surface for application on a hot shaft was realized to prove feasibility. Investigations on sintering characteristics up to a peak temperature of 1173 K, thermoelectric material properties and temperature distribution were carried out for a Ca3Co4O9/Ag‐based prototype and evaluated using profilometer, XRD, and IR measurements. For a combined post‐processing, an optimal sintering profile could be determined at 1073 K peak temperature with a 20 min holding time. Temperature gradients of up to 100 K could be achieved along a thermocouple. A single TEG module consisting of 12 thermocouples achieved a maximum power of 0.224 μW and open‐circuit voltage of 134.41 mV at an average hot‐side temperature of 413.6 K and temperature difference of 106.7 K. Three of these modules combined into a common TEG with a total of 36 thermocouples reached a maximum power of 0.58 K and open‐circuit voltage of 319.28 mV with a lesser average hot‐side temperature of 387.8 K and temperature difference of 83.4 K.

AbstractMixed ionic‐electronic conducting (MIEC) membranes have gained growing interest recently for various promising environmental and energy applications, such as H2and O2production, CO2reduction, O2and H2separation, CO2separation, membrane reactors for production of chemicals, cathode development for solid oxide fuel cells, solar‐driven evaporation and energy‐saving regeneration as well as electrolyzer cells for power‐to‐X technologies. The purpose of this roadmap, written by international specialists in their fields, is to present a snapshot of the state‐of‐the‐art, and provide opinions on the future challenges and opportunities in this complex multidisciplinary research field. As the fundamentals of using MIEC membranes for various applications become increasingly challenging tasks, particularly in view of the growing interdisciplinary nature of this field, a better understanding of the underlying physical and chemical processes is also crucial to enable the career advancement of the next generation of researchers. As an integrated and combined article, it is hoped that this roadmap, covering all these aspects, will be informative to support further progress in academics as well as in the industry‐oriented research toward commercialization of MIEC membranes for different applications.

Energy harvesting with thermoelectric materials has been investigated with increasing attention over recent decades. However, the vast number of various material classes makes it difficult to maintain an overview of the best candidates. Thus, we revitalize Ioffe plots as a useful tool for making the thermoelectric properties of a material obvious and easily comparable. These plots enable us to consider not only the efficiency of the material by the figure of merit zT but also the power factor and entropy conductivity as separate parameters. This is especially important for high-temperature applications, where a critical look at the impact of the power factor and thermal conductivity is mandatory. Thus, this review focuses on material classes for high-temperature applications and emphasizes the best candidates within the material classes of oxides, oxyselenides, Zintl phases, half-Heusler compounds, and SiGe alloys. An overall comparison between these material classes with respect to either a high efficiency or a high power output is discussed.

In this work, a laser sintering process of the oxide‐based thermoelectric material Ca3Co4O9 is investigated. Samples based on spray‐coated Ca3Co4O9 were prepared and subsequently sintered under various laser parameters and investigated in terms of the microstructure and thermoelectric properties. Here, the combination of laser sintering and subsequent thermal sintering proved to be a promising concept for the preparation of thermoelectric films. Laser sintering can thus make a great contribution in improving the processing of thermoelectric materials, especially when films are applied that cannot be sintered under pressure.
