description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2011 ItalyPublisher:Elsevier BV Marco Frey; Marco Frey; Fabio Iraldo; Fabio Iraldo; Francesco Testa; There is a considerable debate on the effects of environmental regulation on competitive performance. Based on survey data, this paper analyzes the two main research questions, derived from literature, on the links between environmental regulation and competitiveness, by focusing on firms operating in the building and construction sector, i.e.: 1) whether environmental policy stringency affects the competitive performance of firms in the building and construction sector 2) and how a specific form of environmental regulation (direct regulation, economic instruments and soft instruments) affects this performance? By applying a regression analysis, we find that a more stringent environmental regulation, measured by inspection frequency, provides a positive impulse for increasing investments in advanced technological equipment and innovative products and on business performance. Moreover, a well-designed "direct regulation" appears to be the most effective policy instrument for prompting the positive impact of environmental policies on innovation and intangible performance while economic instruments do negatively affect business performance.

Recent studies have demonstrated how buyers can influence the environmental performance of suppliers. However, although industrial waste accounts for much of the waste generated in the west, little is known about how industrial waste is managed downstream. We present an analysis of the drivers influencing the decision to opt for waste-to-recovery rather than disposal facilities. The drivers were investigated by a questionnaire survey. Findings show that the manufacturing industry is more likely to send waste to recovery rather than disposal facilities, as a result of factors such as the service provider s reputation, the presence of a broker in the transaction, and pressure from public authorities.

Changing people's behaviour in relation to energy consumption will be one of the most important challenges in the near future. We analyzed the determinants behind individuals' decisions to adopt curtailment behaviour or to purchase energy saving products. Using data from 213 university students, we explored the influence of personal capabilities and moral norms, along with trust in information on energy saving actions provided by different entities on two energy saving behaviours. The results of the statistical model emphasise how personal norms and trust in information provided by private companies, on the one hand, and family and friends, on the other, strongly influence the adoption of energy saving actions and curtailment behaviours. The paper reveals the pivotal role of private companies in developing the market demand for energy-saving products by providing credible and scientifically-based information on environmental performance. The paper also contributes to strengthening the reliability of value-belief-norm theory and emphasizes the role of trust in information as a contextual factor that influences the adoption of a pro-environmental behaviour.

As “green public procurement” (GPP) is playing an increasingly important role in stimulating the demand for environmentally friendly products and services, there is a strongly emerging need to analyze which factors drive the inclusion of environmental criteria in public tenders. Working on data from Italian municipalities, our statistical analysis confirmed that intensifying information and raising awareness on GPP techniques can strongly support the development of public green tenders. Moreover, our work reveals that good GPP performance cannot be achieved through the mere adoption of a certified Environmental Management System (EMS) by a public authority alone, but rather through the level of maturity of the certified EMS that provides a growing “value added” to GPP practices. Finally, findings of this study demonstrate that the relevant limitations linked to the small size of public authorities can be overcome by the progress in GPP brought by several European, national and local supporting initiatives.

Employees’ pro-environmental behaviors (or eco-initiatives) are of paramount importance for embedding sustainability beyond symbolic commitments and compliance with formal procedures. Understanding antecedents of employees’ eco-initiatives requires examining situation- and person-related factors, in order to shed light on interactions between the work environment, individuals’ cognitive dynamics and supervisory behaviors that drive employees’ proactive stance on environmental issues on the job. Drawing on a survey of employees in four large retail stores in Italy, the study examines green work climate and work meaningfulness as antecedents of employees’ eco-initiatives, also testing the mediation of work meaningfulness in the relation between green work climate and eco-initiatives. In addition, the study explores the moderation of supervisor environmental priority on the relation between work meaningfulness and eco-initiatives. The results support the hypothesis of the study, highlighting green work climate and work meaningfulness as relevant workplace dynamics in stimulating employees’ eco-initiatives, also shedding light on the role of supervisors in managing conflicting priorities between sustainability and productivity. The findings contribute to the literature on drivers of green workplace behaviors, by emphasizing interactions between situational, personal and supervisory antecedents. Managerial implications and avenues for future research are also discussed.

Abstract The building and construction sector plays a crucial role in implementing energy efficiency and, more generally, in reducing environmental impacts. In this context, design is a key-phase for effective improvement in the whole sector. Therefore, the adoption of the Eco-design approach can be a “green” turning point for the strategies of this sector. This study aims to investigate factors and drawbacks that drive designers in the implementation of Eco-design. The data are collected by a questionnaire survey covering a considerable number of designers in Tuscany (region in Central Italy). The results reveal that designers have a high environmental sensitivity, but a systematic adoption of Eco-design approach is still far. Moreover, the study highlights the spreading in the sector of those “internal” key factors that normally foster the inclusion of energy and environmental criteria in the building design, e.g. training, cooperation with supply chain and certification schemes.

This article presents a conceptual and empirical review of the literature related to the link between the different perspectives, models, and tools associated with Quality Management and Environmental Management. Several academic works identified in the literature that aimed to establish conceptual similarities between QM and EM are reviewed and discussed. In general, terms, the scholarly literature suggests that the main quality practices and programs associated with the Quality Management paradigm—such as ISO 9001 and Total Quality Management—facilitate the adoption of environmental practices associated with corporate Environmental Management. However, there is evidence of certain limitations driven by different biases, whether or not they are recognized in the reviewed publications. The concentration on some avenues of research focused on very detailed aspects of the linkage between QM and EM is discussed. Conversely, lines that have been overlooked and are in need for more research were also identified. The implications for scholars, such as suggestions for further research, are included as a contribution of the article.

Abstract Despite the importance that environmental management systems have in the environmental policy agenda, the debate on their effectiveness to improve environmental performance (e.g. the reduction of polluting emissions) is still open among researchers and practitioners. Furthermore, no previous quantitative works have addressed the comparative study of the effectiveness of the two main reference standards that set requirements for an environmental management system: the international standard ISO 14001 and the European EMAS scheme. In order to fill this gap, this research paper investigates the impacts of EMAS and ISO 14001 on the reduction of carbonic anhydride emissions on 229 energy intensive plants in Italy. By applying a rigorous statistical method, the results suggest that the implementation of an environmental management system in energy intensive industries has a clear influence on environmental performance both in the short and in the long term, but a different effect of ISO 14001 and EMAS on environmental performance occurs.

Our paper analyses the link between the adoption of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and competitiveness performance among small and medium enterprises operating in the fashion industry. The study refers to a sample of 213 SMEs (Small and Medium sized Enterprises) located in Italy and France and is based on a correlation analysis between competitiveness variables and the CSR practice adopted. The results show a significant correlation with regard to the innovation process, both from the technical and the organizational point of view, and the intangible performances. On the other hand, another competitiveness macro-category, which is the market performance (measured as demand trend, turnover and business attraction), presents deceptive results, although a positive correlation with the adoption of market-oriented CSR practice emerges. The study is explorative and represents a relevant basis to future studies concerning the nature of the emerged co-relations.

AbstractEmbedding sustainability in day‐to‐day operations necessitates employees' proactiveness beyond compliance with standardised management practices. Exchanging information on safety and environmental issues is acknowledged as a component of workers' proactive behaviours for sustainability embeddedness, which is hardly promoted by codified procedures. Accordingly, identifying leverages to stimulate information exchange is a primary objective for academics and practitioners. The study investigates drivers of information exchange on safety and environmental near misses by examining five situation‐related antecedents: rewards/reinforcements, organisational boundaries, social proactiveness, stakeholder salience and connectedness. The study relies on a mixed method approach, by combining social network analysis and a questionnaire survey conducted among four large Italian companies. The findings partially support the hypothesis of the study, highlighting rewards/reinforcements and connectedness as relevant antecedents of information exchange, while organisational boundaries only partially relate with information exchange. Surprisingly, stakeholder salience and social proactiveness do not emerge as significant drivers of information exchange. The study contributes to the debate on extra‐role pro‐sustainability behaviours and provides implications for managerial practice.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2011 ItalyPublisher:Elsevier BV Marco Frey; Marco Frey; Fabio Iraldo; Fabio Iraldo; Francesco Testa; There is a considerable debate on the effects of environmental regulation on competitive performance.
