    Currently, intensive work is underway in Poland to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the overall energy balance. Therefore, this paper presents the possibilities of using concentrated solar power in zones with a temperate climate. A simplified model based on the energy balance in the solar collectors considering the main operating parameters of the typical solar power plant was developed. It should be noted here that the model does not take into account issues related to heat accumulation and electricity generation in a Solar Thermal Power Station. The simulation of forced convection inside the solar collector absorber was additionally included in the calculations to improve its accuracy. The model was verified using actual heat measurements at the outlet of the parabolic collector installation at a Solar Thermal Power Station located in the south of Spain. The heat generated by a similar solar collector system in a selected region with a temperate climate, the city of Bialystok (north-eastern Poland, geographic coordinates: 53°08′07″ N 23°08′44″ E) was determined by the developed simplified model for different months of the year. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that the energy obtained from the same area of concentrated solar collectors located near Bialystok is eight times lower compared to the location in Cordoba depending on the variant of the power plant operation.

    This paper presents the analysis of the heat conduction of pre-insulated double ducts and the optimization of the shape of thermal insulation by applying an elliptical shape. The shape of the cross-section of the thermal insulation is significantly affected by the thermal efficiency of double pre-insulated networks. The thickness of the insulation from the external side of the supply and return pipes affects the heat losses of the double pre-insulated pipes, while the distance between the supply and return pipes influences the heat flux exchanged between these ducts. An assumed elliptical shape with a ratio of the major axis to the minor half axis of an ellipse equaling 1.93 was compared to thermal circular insulation with the same cross-sectional area. All calculations were made using the boundary element method (BEM) using a proprietary computer program written in Fortran as part of the VIPSKILLS project.

    The paper presents an analysis of heat loss and reductions of annual emissions of air pollutants of a quadruple pre-insulated heating network by comparing this solution with the existing pre-insulated network consisting of four pre-insulated single pipes and the variant consisting of two twin pipe pre-insulated. For calculations, an existing heating network located in central Poland was adopted, where heat is transported for heating purposes of buildings and domestic hot water with circulation of domestic hot water through four separate pre-insulated underground pipes. The idea of the construction of four pre-insulated pipes presented in the paper consists in the location of four steel pipes in a common round thermal insulation, which perform the role of heat transport for heating purposes in multi-family buildings (supply and return) and two pipes transporting hot water (a pipe with domestic hot water with circulation). In Poland, heating pipes used in multi-family housing have a larger diameter compared to domestic hot water pipes, which is why standard twin pipe heating pipes have been used in the construction of four pre-insulated networks, in which the domestic hot water pipe has been added to the thermal insulation and circulation of domestic hot water. In order to determine heat losses, a simplified two-dimensional model of conductive heat transfer was developed using Fortran to create a computer program. The results of numerical simulations show that the use of twin pipes for the construction of pre-insulated quadruple networks has contributed to a significant reduction in heat loss in relation to the existing single pre-insulated network (up to 57.1%), while reducing the thermal insulation field of the cross-section of the pre-insulated pipe by 21.4%.

    The publication presents the results of research on soil temperature distribution at a depth of 0.25–3 m in three measurement locations. Two boreholes were located in Białystok in the temperate climatic zone and one measuring well was installed in Belmez in the subtropical climatic zone. Measurements were made in homogeneous soil layers in sand (Białystok) and in clay (Białystok and Belmez). Based on the results of the measurements, a simplified model of temperature distributions as a function of depth and the number of days in a year was developed. The presented model can be used as a boundary condition to determine heat losses of district heating pipes located in the ground and to estimate the thermal efficiency of horizontal heat exchangers in very low-temperature geothermal energy applications.

    The highest effectiveness of heat exchange is under boiling; hence, surface tension is an important parameter and should be determined when new liquid substances are created. The most popular methods are based on numerically solving the Young–Laplace equation by applying the Bashforth and Adams algorithm, which fails at the poles and at the inflection points. The newest algorithm is based on the closed-form expressions that define a drop or bubble. It gives the accurate solutions for the fully created drops or bubbles. To validate it, the surface tension value is determined for the air bubbles in water and compared with the reference data. Because the relative discrepancies are extremely small, the new method may be thought of as positively validated.

    This paper presents research on humidity in a passenger car cabin with the use of supply ventilation without cooling the air. Based on the tests carried out and the humidity balance in the car, a model was developed for changing the humidity in the passenger car cabin as a function of time. The study of thermohumid conditions was carried out in two passenger cars. During the tests, the heating and cooling functions were turned off. The relative humidity and temperature were measured outside the car before and after driving the car and in the supply air duct and inside the passenger car cabin while driving the car. The tests were carried out for an average temperature range from 20 to 42.9 °C. In order to develop a model of humidity changes as a function of time, a humidity balance was prepared. Human-generated humidity in the car cabin depends mainly on the temperature inside the car and the age of the person and can range from 20 to 180 g/(h × person) for an adult in the temperature range of 20–43 °C, while for a child under six years old the humidity ranges from 8 to 19.5 g/(h × person) in the temperature range 22–34 °C. A formula of humidity generated by an adult and a child aged six years old was obtained as a function of temperature inside a passenger car. Based on the experimental research and the model developed, the humidity generated by a single adult and a six-year-old child in the car was determined. The developed model can be used in the automatic airflow adjustment systems in passenger cars.

    This paper presents possible variants of reducing the heat loss in an existing heating network made from single pre-insulated pipes located in central Europe. In order to achieve this aim, simulations were carried out for five different variants related to the modification of the network operation temperature, replacement of a single network with a double pre-insulated one, and changes in the cross-section geometry of the thermal insulation of the double heating network from circular to egg-shaped. The proposed egg-shaped thermal insulation was obtained by modifying the shape of the Cassini oval, in that the supply pipe has a greater insulation thickness compared to the return pipe. The larger insulation field in the supply pipe contributed to reducing the heat flux density around the supply line and, as a result, to significantly reducing heat loss. The egg-shaped thermal insulation described in the publication in a mathematical formula can be used in practice. This work compares the heat losses for the presented variants and determines the ecological effect. Heat losses were determined using the boundary element method (BEM), using a proprietary computer program written as part of the VIPSKILLS 2016-1-PL01-KA203-026152 project Erasmus+.

    Surface tension is a meaningful parameter influencing boiling and condensation in macroscopic scale, in confined spaces, or for nanofluids; it further affects boiling with surfactants. Surface, or interfacial, tension is an important property in the research into increasing heat transfer, enhancing efficiency of photovoltaic systems, improving engine operation, or forming drugs or polymers. It is often determined using axisymmetric drop shape analysis based on the differential equations system formulated by Bashforth and Adams. The closed-form expression of the interface shape states the radii defining the bubbles are the negative numbers, which causes the temperature profile drops along the heat transfer direction, e.g., in the Wiśniewski formulas for the temperature in the vapor bubbles; moreover, the drop, or bubble, possesses only one main radius of curvature, which may reduce the number of the unknowns and equations in the Bashforth and Adams algorithm. An alternative method applying the closed-form expression for the droplet shape is validated for the water (denser) drop flowing down in octane (the lighter liquid); its spare equation is used for verifying the outcomes.

    Currently, intensive work is underway in Poland to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the overall energy balance. Therefore, this paper presents the possibilities of using concentrated solar power in zones with a temperate climate. A simplified model based on the energy balance in the solar collectors considering the main operating parameters of the typical solar power plant was developed. It should be noted here that the model does not take into account issues related to heat accumulation and electricity generation in a Solar Thermal Power Station. The simulation of forced convection inside the solar collector absorber was additionally included in the calculations to improve its accuracy. The model was verified using actual heat measurements at the outlet of the parabolic collector installation at a Solar Thermal Power Station located in the south of Spain. The heat generated by a similar solar collector system in a selected region with a temperate climate, the city of Bialystok (north-eastern Poland, geographic coordinates: 53°08′07″ N 23°08′44″ E) was determined by the developed simplified model for different months of the year. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that the energy obtained from the same area of concentrated solar collectors located near Bialystok is eight times lower compared to the location in Cordoba depending on the variant of the power plant operation.

    This paper presents the analysis of the heat conduction of pre-insulated double ducts and the optimization of the shape of thermal insulation by applying an elliptical shape. The shape of the cross-section of the thermal insulation is significantly affected by the thermal efficiency of double pre-insulated networks. The thickness of the insulation from the external side of the supply and return pipes affects the heat losses of the double pre-insulated pipes, while the distance between the supply and return pipes influences the heat flux exchanged between these ducts. An assumed elliptical shape with a ratio of the major axis to the minor half axis of an ellipse equaling 1.93 was compared to thermal circular insulation with the same cross-sectional area. All calculations were made using the boundary element method (BEM) using a proprietary computer program written in Fortran as part of the VIPSKILLS project.

    The paper presents an analysis of heat loss and reductions of annual emissions of air pollutants of a quadruple pre-insulated heating network by comparing this solution with the existing pre-insulated network consisting of four pre-insulated single pipes and the variant consisting of two twin pipe pre-insulated. For calculations, an existing heating network located in central Poland was adopted, where heat is transported for heating purposes of buildings and domestic hot water with circulation of domestic hot water through four separate pre-insulated underground pipes. The idea of the construction of four pre-insulated pipes presented in the paper consists in the location of four steel pipes in a common round thermal insulation, which perform the role of heat transport for heating purposes in multi-family buildings (supply and return) and two pipes transporting hot water (a pipe with domestic hot water with circulation). In Poland, heating pipes used in multi-family housing have a larger diameter compared to domestic hot water pipes, which is why standard twin pipe heating pipes have been used in the construction of four pre-insulated networks, in which the domestic hot water pipe has been added to the thermal insulation and circulation of domestic hot water. In order to determine heat losses, a simplified two-dimensional model of conductive heat transfer was developed using Fortran to create a computer program. The results of numerical simulations show that the use of twin pipes for the construction of pre-insulated quadruple networks has contributed to a significant reduction in heat loss in relation to the existing single pre-insulated network (up to 57.1%), while reducing the thermal insulation field of the cross-section of the pre-insulated pipe by 21.4%.

    The publication presents the results of research on soil temperature distribution at a depth of 0.25–3 m in three measurement locations. Two boreholes were located in Białystok in the temperate climatic zone and one measuring well was installed in Belmez in the subtropical climatic zone. Measurements were made in homogeneous soil layers in sand (Białystok) and in clay (Białystok and Belmez). Based on the results of the measurements, a simplified model of temperature distributions as a function of depth and the number of days in a year was developed. The presented model can be used as a boundary condition to determine heat losses of district heating pipes located in the ground and to estimate the thermal efficiency of horizontal heat exchangers in very low-temperature geothermal energy applications.

    The highest effectiveness of heat exchange is under boiling; hence, surface tension is an important parameter and should be determined when new liquid substances are created. The most popular methods are based on numerically solving the Young–Laplace equation by applying the Bashforth and Adams algorithm, which fails at the poles and at the inflection points. The newest algorithm is based on the closed-form expressions that define a drop or bubble. It gives the accurate solutions for the fully created drops or bubbles. To validate it, the surface tension value is determined for the air bubbles in water and compared with the reference data. Because the relative discrepancies are extremely small, the new method may be thought of as positively validated.

    This paper presents research on humidity in a passenger car cabin with the use of supply ventilation without cooling the air. Based on the tests carried out and the humidity balance in the car, a model was developed for changing the humidity in the passenger car cabin as a function of time. The study of thermohumid conditions was carried out in two passenger cars. During the tests, the heating and cooling functions were turned off. The relative humidity and temperature were measured outside the car before and after driving the car and in the supply air duct and inside the passenger car cabin while driving the car. The tests were carried out for an average temperature range from 20 to 42.9 °C. In order to develop a model of humidity changes as a function of time, a humidity balance was prepared. Human-generated humidity in the car cabin depends mainly on the temperature inside the car and the age of the person and can range from 20 to 180 g/(h × person) for an adult in the temperature range of 20–43 °C, while for a child under six years old the humidity ranges from 8 to 19.5 g/(h × person) in the temperature range 22–34 °C. A formula of humidity generated by an adult and a child aged six years old was obtained as a function of temperature inside a passenger car. Based on the experimental research and the model developed, the humidity generated by a single adult and a six-year-old child in the car was determined. The developed model can be used in the automatic airflow adjustment systems in passenger cars.

    This paper presents possible variants of reducing the heat loss in an existing heating network made from single pre-insulated pipes located in central Europe. In order to achieve this aim, simulations were carried out for five different variants related to the modification of the network operation temperature, replacement of a single network with a double pre-insulated one, and changes in the cross-section geometry of the thermal insulation of the double heating network from circular to egg-shaped. The proposed egg-shaped thermal insulation was obtained by modifying the shape of the Cassini oval, in that the supply pipe has a greater insulation thickness compared to the return pipe. The larger insulation field in the supply pipe contributed to reducing the heat flux density around the supply line and, as a result, to significantly reducing heat loss. The egg-shaped thermal insulation described in the publication in a mathematical formula can be used in practice. This work compares the heat losses for the presented variants and determines the ecological effect. Heat losses were determined using the boundary element method (BEM), using a proprietary computer program written as part of the VIPSKILLS 2016-1-PL01-KA203-026152 project Erasmus+.

    Surface tension is a meaningful parameter influencing boiling and condensation in macroscopic scale, in confined spaces, or for nanofluids; it further affects boiling with surfactants. Surface, or interfacial, tension is an important property in the research into increasing heat transfer, enhancing efficiency of photovoltaic systems, improving engine operation, or forming drugs or polymers. It is often determined using axisymmetric drop shape analysis based on the differential equations system formulated by Bashforth and Adams. The closed-form expression of the interface shape states the radii defining the bubbles are the negative numbers, which causes the temperature profile drops along the heat transfer direction, e.g., in the Wiśniewski formulas for the temperature in the vapor bubbles; moreover, the drop, or bubble, possesses only one main radius of curvature, which may reduce the number of the unknowns and equations in the Bashforth and Adams algorithm. An alternative method applying the closed-form expression for the droplet shape is validated for the water (denser) drop flowing down in octane (the lighter liquid); its spare equation is used for verifying the outcomes.
