Eltantawy; Magdy M. A. Salama; In this paper, a novel algorithm for calculating distribution load flow (DLF) for smart grid is presented. The algorithm can provide a DLF solution in a specific area of interest in the distribution system without the necessity of including all of the distribution system laterals in the DLF problem. The system laterals excluded from the DLF solution are replaced by equivalent loads using a proposed lumping technique. The proposed DLF zooming method thus reduces the size of the DLF problem and hence minimizes the effect of system size on the DLF solution time. The construction of the DLF problem is based on a novel automated recursive process, which enables fast accommodation of changes in the network topology of smart grid. The simulation results validate the accuracy of the proposed DLF zooming algorithm and provide a favorable evaluation of its performance for smart grid operation.

This, however, opens up the grid to a vast amount of attack vectors and intruders. Therefore, cyber security is an indispensable part of the smart grid communications’ infrastructure and must be considered in the early phases of planning. The achievement of a secure grid infrastructure requires cryptographic primitives whose strength is dependent on the utilized keys, raising the need for secure key generation/distribution mechanisms. Furthermore, the underlying security mechanisms should be scalable due to the large AMI network sizes. In this paper, we propose the usage of identity-based-cryptography as the basic block of the key distribution mechanism to generate secret keys between neighboring smart meters in a non-interactive manner. Physical unclonable functions are proposed on the hardware platform to eliminate key compromise at the hardware level. We also propose a secure mechanism for updating private keys that are utilized as a seed within the identity-based cryptosystem. A lightweight key delivery mechanism exploiting multicast network features is presented along with a new authentication algorithm for the updated keys. Hardware tests are performed on a Cortex M3-based microcontroller to mimic smart meters’ processors and assess the feasibility of the proposed key authentication. Experiments conducted on a network simulator validate the feasibility of the proposed methodology indicating key delivery latency reduction up to 80% and network traffic reduction up to 27%.

We propose a novel statistical wind power forecast framework, which leverages the spatio-temporal correlation in wind speed and direction data among geographically dispersed wind farms. Critical assessment of the performance of spatio-temporal wind power forecast is performed using realistic wind farm data from West Texas. It is shown that spatio-temporal wind forecast models are numerically efficient approaches to improving forecast quality. By reducing uncertainties in near-term wind power forecasts, the overall cost benefits on system dispatch can be quantified. We integrate the improved forecast with an advanced robust look-ahead dispatch framework. This integrated forecast and economic dispatch framework is tested in a modified IEEE RTS 24-bus system. Numerical simulation suggests that the overall generation cost can be reduced by up to 6% using a robust look-ahead dispatch coupled with spatio-temporal wind forecast as compared with persistent wind forecast models.

When profit-maximizing generators act strategically to manipulate prices; however, LMP may lead to high loss of economic efficiency. In this paper, we apply the Vickrey-Clarke–Groves (VCG) mechanism to wholesale electricity markets. We show that the VCG mechanism minimizes the total cost at a truth-telling dominant strategy equilibrium. We establish an important comparative result that the VCG mechanism always results in higher per-unit electricity prices than the LMP mechanism under any given set of reported supply curves. Numerical results show that the difference between the per-unit prices resulting from the two mechanisms is negligibly small (about 4%) in the IEEE 14-bus and 30-bus test systems. Finally, we apply the VCG mechanism to a day-ahead setting with start-up cost (of conventional generators) and intermittent renewable generation. We show that the VCG mechanism induces the truth-telling behavior of conventional generators in dominant strategies and yields each conventional generator a non-negative expected profit.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2017Publisher:Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Authors: Uttam Adhikari; Thomas Morris; Shengyi Pan;Researchers from various cross disciplinary fields such as power systems, data science, and cybersecurity face two distinct challenges. First, the lack of a comprehensive test bed that integrates industry standard hardware, software, and wide area measurement system (WAMS) components and protocols impedes the study of cybersecurity issues including vulnerabilities associated with WAMS components and the consequences of exploitation of vulnerabilities. Second, a lack of comprehensive labeled Synchrophasor data along with other system related information imposes challenges to the development and evaluation of data mining algorithms that can classify power system cyber-power events. In this paper, a WAMS cyber-physical test bed was developed using a real time digital simulator with hardware-in-the-loop simulation. Commercial control and monitoring devices, hardware, software, and industry standard communication networks and protocols were combined with custom MATLAB, Python, and AutoIt scripts to model realistic power system contingencies and cyber-attacks. An automated simulation and control engine was developed to randomize modeled cyber-power events including power system faults, contingencies, control actions, and cyber-attacks. Scripts were added to capture heterogenous sensor data and create ground truth labeled datasets. The WAMS cyber-physical test bed is capable of simulating various sized power systems and creating datasets without altering the hardware configuration. A WAMS architecture is presented to document the integration of various components. Finally, test bed applications, simulated cyber-power scenarios, the dataset development process, and selected results are presented.
