    AbstractVoltage stability detection is currently still becoming the main issue in the modern integrated renewable energy power systems. To assess the voltage stability, the classical methods based on continuation power flow (CPF) technique were used to show nose curve. However, the classical methods require complete model of power system and long computation time. Data driven analysis and synchronized real time measurement technologies currently are developing in power systems monitoring, including the stability detection. The detection method is built based on the historical event model and uses the real time measurement as an input. For that reason, the algorithm to detect the voltage instability and critical bus is proposed using the artificial neural network (ANN) technique to represent the historical event model using the PMU measurement data. The ANN model architecture for this application is developed by creating seven hidden layers consisting of one normalization, four rectifier linear unit, one softmax and one sigmoid layer. To warrant the accuracy, the k-fold cross-validation is used. The algorithm is simulated on modified IEEE 14 test system which consider different loading scenario, line contingency, number of PMU and Photovoltaic (PV) integration. To mimic the actual historical data, the synthetic data is generated and labelled. The result shows that the proposed method can represent the complete power system model by giving high accuracy which for voltage stability detection is > 97% and critical buses detection is > 96% for all scenarios. Moreover, the required computation time is between 16 and 18 s per detection which makes the scalability to the real time detection is reasonable.

    Abstract Introduction Energy system simulation modeling plays an important role in understanding, analyzing, optimizing, and guiding the change to sustainable energy systems. Objectives This review aims to examine energy system simulation modeling, emphasizing its role in analyzing and optimizing energy systems for sustainable development. Methods The paper explores four key simulation methodologies; Agent-Based Modeling (ABM), System Dynamics (SD), Discrete-Event Simulation (DES), and Integrated Energy Models (IEMs). Practical applications of these methodologies are illustrated through specific case studies. Results The analysis covers key components of energy systems, including generation, transmission, distribution, consumption, storage, and renewable integration. ABM models consumer behavior in renewable energy adoption, SD assesses long-term policy impacts, DES optimizes energy scheduling, and IEMs provide comprehensive sector integration. Case studies demonstrate the practical relevance and effectiveness of these models in addressing challenges such as data quality, model complexity, and validation processes. Conclusions Simulation modeling is essential for addressing energy challenges, driving innovation, and informing policy. The review identifies critical areas for improvement, including enhancing data quality, refining modeling techniques, and strengthening validation processes. Future directions emphasize the continued importance of simulation modeling in achieving sustainable energy systems.

    Abstract With the rapid development of the cold chain logistics industry, its high energy consumption and low operational efficiency have become increasingly prominent, seriously restricting the sustainable development of the industry. This study focuses on this and proposes a real-time monitoring system for cold chain logistics based on the Internet of Things. It combines the long short-term memory network (LSTM) and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to build an energy consumption management strategy. Through the distributed system architecture design, a variety of data transmission protocols are used to ensure real-time and stable data collection and transmission, and to achieve accurate monitoring of key environmental factors in the transportation and storage of cold chain logistics. The experiment was carried out in a simulated cold chain logistics scenario. The data set covers multiple types of sensor data and is compared with multiple baseline models. The results show that compared with the traditional cold chain logistics system, this system significantly improves energy efficiency, reduces energy consumption by about 20%, increases temperature and humidity control accuracy to 94% respectively, improves transportation efficiency, and shortens transportation time by 8.33%. At the same time, the combination of LSTM and PSO algorithms optimizes energy consumption prediction and equipment scheduling, and the equipment group collaborative optimization strategy enhances system stability. This study confirms that the real-time monitoring and energy consumption management strategy based on the Internet of Things can effectively improve the economic and environmental benefits of the cold chain logistics system.

    Abstract With the rapid development of the cold chain logistics industry, its high energy consumption and low operational efficiency have become increasingly prominent, seriously restricting the sustainable development of the industry. This study focuses on this and proposes a real-time monitoring system for cold chain logistics based on the Internet of Things. It combines the long short-term memory network (LSTM) and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to build an energy consumption management strategy. Through the distributed system architecture design, a variety of data transmission protocols are used to ensure real-time and stable data collection and transmission, and to achieve accurate monitoring of key environmental factors in the transportation and storage of cold chain logistics. The experiment was carried out in a simulated cold chain logistics scenario. The data set covers multiple types of sensor data and is compared with multiple baseline models. The results show that compared with the traditional cold chain logistics system, this system significantly improves energy efficiency, reduces energy consumption by about 20%, increases temperature and humidity control accuracy to 94% respectively, improves transportation efficiency, and shortens transportation time by 8.33%. At the same time, the combination of LSTM and PSO algorithms optimizes energy consumption prediction and equipment scheduling, and the equipment group collaborative optimization strategy enhances system stability. This study confirms that the real-time monitoring and energy consumption management strategy based on the Internet of Things can effectively improve the economic and environmental benefits of the cold chain logistics system.

    AbstractThis article introduces and formalizes a novel stochastic method that combines inverse simulation with the theory of generalized Polynomial Chaos (gPC) to solve and study inverse problems under uncertainty in energy system design applications. The method is particularly relevant to design tasks where only a deterministic forward model of a physical system is available, in which a target design quantity is an input to the model that cannot be obtained directly, but can be quantified reversely via the outputs of the model. In this scenario, the proposed method offers an analytical and direct approach to invert such system models. The method puts emphasis on user-friendliness, as it enables its users to conduct the inverse simulation under uncertainty directly in the gPC domain by redefining basic algebra operations for computations. Moreover, the method incorporates an optimization-based approach to integrate supplementary constraints on stochastic quantities. This feature enables the solution of inverse problems bounding the statistical moments of stochastic system variables. The authors exemplify the application of the proposed method with proof-of-concept tests in energy system design, specifically performing uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis for a Multi-Energy System (MES). The findings demonstrate the high accuracy of the method as well as clear advantages over conventional sampling-based methods when dealing with a small number of stochastic variables in a system or model. However, the case studies also highlight the current limitations of the proposed method such as slow execution speed due to the optimization-based approach and the challenges associated with, for example, the curse of dimensionality in gPC.

    AbstractThe production of electrical energy has always been a subject of debate to fight against climate change and preserve natural resources. Several countries, including Morocco, have proposed ambitious policies to develop renewable energy sources of production in the short and medium term. The major problem of renewable sources production is their intermittent nature. Using storage units, particularly PETS’ and molten salt technologies, will increase the penetration rate of renewable energies. The balance between production and consumption will optimize production, and it represents an important aspect of smart grids. In this article, an electrical energy consumption prediction was developed for the period 2019-2025, and optimization of the renewable energies injected within the grid was made by introducing the algorithm used. The results show that the use of storage units will increase the rate of renewable energies integration to 47.189% of the total installed capacity.

    AbstractThe production of electrical energy has always been a subject of debate to fight against climate change and preserve natural resources. Several countries, including Morocco, have proposed ambitious policies to develop renewable energy sources of production in the short and medium term. The major problem of renewable sources production is their intermittent nature. Using storage units, particularly PETS’ and molten salt technologies, will increase the penetration rate of renewable energies. The balance between production and consumption will optimize production, and it represents an important aspect of smart grids. In this article, an electrical energy consumption prediction was developed for the period 2019-2025, and optimization of the renewable energies injected within the grid was made by introducing the algorithm used. The results show that the use of storage units will increase the rate of renewable energies integration to 47.189% of the total installed capacity.

    AbstractElectrification of the transportation sector provides several advantages in favor of climate protection and a shared economy. At the same time, the rapid growth of electric vehicles also demands innovative solutions to mitigate risks to the low-voltage network due to unpredictable charging patterns of electric vehicles. This article conceptualizes a stochastic reinforcement learning agent that learns the optimal policy for regulating the charging power. The optimization objective intends to reduce charging time, thus charging faster while minimizing the expected voltage violations in the distribution network. The problem is formulated as a two-stage optimization routine where the stochastic policy gradient agent predicts the boundary condition of the inner non-linear optimization problem. The results confirm the performance of the proposed architecture to control the charging power as intended. The article also provides extensive theoretical background and directions for future research in this discipline.

    Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are claimed to foster climate-neutral energy and transportation systems. However, the use of the BEVs shifts emissions only geographically. In addition, the charging of BEVs can lead to new problems, such as congestions in the electricity grid. Smart charging algorithms can avoid some of these problems. To do this, however, the BEV user must actively decide to make her temporal flexibility available. Feedback on possible CO2 savings could be a nudge that encourages BEV users to provide more temporal flexibility. We compare different charging events and algorithms to determine the savings in CO2 emissions of BEV charging. We find that temporal flexibility can on average save of CO2 emissions in the single-digit percentage range in Germany. The results can be used to implement a feedback nudge in smart charging systems to test its effectiveness on the provision of temporal charging flexibility of BEV users.

    Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are claimed to foster climate-neutral energy and transportation systems. However, the use of the BEVs shifts emissions only geographically. In addition, the charging of BEVs can lead to new problems, such as congestions in the electricity grid. Smart charging algorithms can avoid some of these problems. To do this, however, the BEV user must actively decide to make her temporal flexibility available. Feedback on possible CO2 savings could be a nudge that encourages BEV users to provide more temporal flexibility. We compare different charging events and algorithms to determine the savings in CO2 emissions of BEV charging. We find that temporal flexibility can on average save of CO2 emissions in the single-digit percentage range in Germany. The results can be used to implement a feedback nudge in smart charging systems to test its effectiveness on the provision of temporal charging flexibility of BEV users.

    AbstractIn order to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative services and technologies spanning over the ICT-enabled power system, realistic models are required. Although nowadays there is a wide range of power system data models, these models do not include a lifelike representation of the ICT system architecture and do not consider the level of interconnectedness of the two systems. In this paper, we propose a methodology for quantification of the geospatial relations between ICT and power system based on openly available data. We describe a graph-theoretic approach, formulate a problem of assessing geospatial relations and discuss the methods required to process publicly available data, retrieve scenarios for different regions and quantify the level of interdependence between ICT and power system.

    AbstractIn order to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative services and technologies spanning over the ICT-enabled power system, realistic models are required. Although nowadays there is a wide range of power system data models, these models do not include a lifelike representation of the ICT system architecture and do not consider the level of interconnectedness of the two systems. In this paper, we propose a methodology for quantification of the geospatial relations between ICT and power system based on openly available data. We describe a graph-theoretic approach, formulate a problem of assessing geospatial relations and discuss the methods required to process publicly available data, retrieve scenarios for different regions and quantify the level of interdependence between ICT and power system.

    Abstract To improve the adaptability of grid load collaborative scheduling, a multi-objective collaborative scheduling method based on a simulated annealing algorithm for the load storage of grid loads on the load side of a new power system is proposed. Local bus transmission technology is adopted to collect the dynamic parameters of energy network load energy storage on the load side of the new power system. The collected load dynamic parameters are fused with energy distribution state parameters to extract the state characteristics of energy network load storage. The simulated annealing algorithm is adopted to realize the load characteristics fusion and adaptive scheduling processing of energy network on the load side of the power system, and the spectral characteristics of the load dynamic parameters are extracted. The dynamic scheduling method of simulated annealing is used to realize the multi-objective optimization of dynamic load of energy network. Based on the co-optimization results of simulated annealing, the optimization application of the simulated annealing algorithm in the multi-objective co-scheduling of loads and energy storage in a new power system is realized. The experimental results show that after 400 iterations, the control convergence accuracy of the proposed method reaches 0.980, which is significantly better than that of the comparison method, and performs well in terms of scheduling efficiency improvement, load scheduling stability, scheduling time and energy waste ratio, proving that the method has good multi-objective integration and strong optimization ability in the scheduling process, and improves the load balanced scheduling and adaptive control ability of the power system.

    AbstractVoltage stability detection is currently still becoming the main issue in the modern integrated renewable energy power systems. To assess the voltage stability, the classical methods based on continuation power flow (CPF) technique were used to show nose curve. However, the classical methods require complete model of power system and long computation time. Data driven analysis and synchronized real time measurement technologies currently are developing in power systems monitoring, including the stability detection. The detection method is built based on the historical event model and uses the real time measurement as an input. For that reason, the algorithm to detect the voltage instability and critical bus is proposed using the artificial neural network (ANN) technique to represent the historical event model using the PMU measurement data. The ANN model architecture for this application is developed by creating seven hidden layers consisting of one normalization, four rectifier linear unit, one softmax and one sigmoid layer. To warrant the accuracy, the k-fold cross-validation is used. The algorithm is simulated on modified IEEE 14 test system which consider different loading scenario, line contingency, number of PMU and Photovoltaic (PV) integration. To mimic the actual historical data, the synthetic data is generated and labelled. The result shows that the proposed method can represent the complete power system model by giving high accuracy which for voltage stability detection is > 97% and critical buses detection is > 96% for all scenarios. Moreover, the required computation time is between 16 and 18 s per detection which makes the scalability to the real time detection is reasonable.

    AbstractVoltage stability detection is currently still becoming the main issue in the modern integrated renewable energy power systems. To assess the voltage stability, the classical methods based on continuation power flow (CPF) technique were used to show nose curve. However, the classical methods require complete model of power system and long computation time. Data driven analysis and synchronized real time measurement technologies currently are developing in power systems monitoring, including the stability detection. The detection method is built based on the historical event model and uses the real time measurement as an input. For that reason, the algorithm to detect the voltage instability and critical bus is proposed using the artificial neural network (ANN) technique to represent the historical event model using the PMU measurement data. The ANN model architecture for this application is developed by creating seven hidden layers consisting of one normalization, four rectifier linear unit, one softmax and one sigmoid layer. To warrant the accuracy, the k-fold cross-validation is used. The algorithm is simulated on modified IEEE 14 test system which consider different loading scenario, line contingency, number of PMU and Photovoltaic (PV) integration. To mimic the actual historical data, the synthetic data is generated and labelled. The result shows that the proposed method can represent the complete power system model by giving high accuracy which for voltage stability detection is > 97% and critical buses detection is > 96% for all scenarios. Moreover, the required computation time is between 16 and 18 s per detection which makes the scalability to the real time detection is reasonable.

    Abstract Introduction Energy system simulation modeling plays an important role in understanding, analyzing, optimizing, and guiding the change to sustainable energy systems. Objectives This review aims to examine energy system simulation modeling, emphasizing its role in analyzing and optimizing energy systems for sustainable development. Methods The paper explores four key simulation methodologies; Agent-Based Modeling (ABM), System Dynamics (SD), Discrete-Event Simulation (DES), and Integrated Energy Models (IEMs). Practical applications of these methodologies are illustrated through specific case studies. Results The analysis covers key components of energy systems, including generation, transmission, distribution, consumption, storage, and renewable integration. ABM models consumer behavior in renewable energy adoption, SD assesses long-term policy impacts, DES optimizes energy scheduling, and IEMs provide comprehensive sector integration. Case studies demonstrate the practical relevance and effectiveness of these models in addressing challenges such as data quality, model complexity, and validation processes. Conclusions Simulation modeling is essential for addressing energy challenges, driving innovation, and informing policy. The review identifies critical areas for improvement, including enhancing data quality, refining modeling techniques, and strengthening validation processes. Future directions emphasize the continued importance of simulation modeling in achieving sustainable energy systems.

    Abstract With the rapid development of the cold chain logistics industry, its high energy consumption and low operational efficiency have become increasingly prominent, seriously restricting the sustainable development of the industry. This study focuses on this and proposes a real-time monitoring system for cold chain logistics based on the Internet of Things. It combines the long short-term memory network (LSTM) and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to build an energy consumption management strategy. Through the distributed system architecture design, a variety of data transmission protocols are used to ensure real-time and stable data collection and transmission, and to achieve accurate monitoring of key environmental factors in the transportation and storage of cold chain logistics. The experiment was carried out in a simulated cold chain logistics scenario. The data set covers multiple types of sensor data and is compared with multiple baseline models. The results show that compared with the traditional cold chain logistics system, this system significantly improves energy efficiency, reduces energy consumption by about 20%, increases temperature and humidity control accuracy to 94% respectively, improves transportation efficiency, and shortens transportation time by 8.33%. At the same time, the combination of LSTM and PSO algorithms optimizes energy consumption prediction and equipment scheduling, and the equipment group collaborative optimization strategy enhances system stability. This study confirms that the real-time monitoring and energy consumption management strategy based on the Internet of Things can effectively improve the economic and environmental benefits of the cold chain logistics system.

    AbstractThis article introduces and formalizes a novel stochastic method that combines inverse simulation with the theory of generalized Polynomial Chaos (gPC) to solve and study inverse problems under uncertainty in energy system design applications. The method is particularly relevant to design tasks where only a deterministic forward model of a physical system is available, in which a target design quantity is an input to the model that cannot be obtained directly, but can be quantified reversely via the outputs of the model. In this scenario, the proposed method offers an analytical and direct approach to invert such system models. The method puts emphasis on user-friendliness, as it enables its users to conduct the inverse simulation under uncertainty directly in the gPC domain by redefining basic algebra operations for computations. Moreover, the method incorporates an optimization-based approach to integrate supplementary constraints on stochastic quantities. This feature enables the solution of inverse problems bounding the statistical moments of stochastic system variables. The authors exemplify the application of the proposed method with proof-of-concept tests in energy system design, specifically performing uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis for a Multi-Energy System (MES). The findings demonstrate the high accuracy of the method as well as clear advantages over conventional sampling-based methods when dealing with a small number of stochastic variables in a system or model. However, the case studies also highlight the current limitations of the proposed method such as slow execution speed due to the optimization-based approach and the challenges associated with, for example, the curse of dimensionality in gPC.

    AbstractThe production of electrical energy has always been a subject of debate to fight against climate change and preserve natural resources. Several countries, including Morocco, have proposed ambitious policies to develop renewable energy sources of production in the short and medium term. The major problem of renewable sources production is their intermittent nature. Using storage units, particularly PETS’ and molten salt technologies, will increase the penetration rate of renewable energies. The balance between production and consumption will optimize production, and it represents an important aspect of smart grids. In this article, an electrical energy consumption prediction was developed for the period 2019-2025, and optimization of the renewable energies injected within the grid was made by introducing the algorithm used. The results show that the use of storage units will increase the rate of renewable energies integration to 47.189% of the total installed capacity.

    AbstractElectrification of the transportation sector provides several advantages in favor of climate protection and a shared economy. At the same time, the rapid growth of electric vehicles also demands innovative solutions to mitigate risks to the low-voltage network due to unpredictable charging patterns of electric vehicles. This article conceptualizes a stochastic reinforcement learning agent that learns the optimal policy for regulating the charging power. The optimization objective intends to reduce charging time, thus charging faster while minimizing the expected voltage violations in the distribution network. The problem is formulated as a two-stage optimization routine where the stochastic policy gradient agent predicts the boundary condition of the inner non-linear optimization problem. The results confirm the performance of the proposed architecture to control the charging power as intended. The article also provides extensive theoretical background and directions for future research in this discipline.

    Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are claimed to foster climate-neutral energy and transportation systems. However, the use of the BEVs shifts emissions only geographically. In addition, the charging of BEVs can lead to new problems, such as congestions in the electricity grid. Smart charging algorithms can avoid some of these problems. To do this, however, the BEV user must actively decide to make her temporal flexibility available. Feedback on possible CO2 savings could be a nudge that encourages BEV users to provide more temporal flexibility. We compare different charging events and algorithms to determine the savings in CO2 emissions of BEV charging. We find that temporal flexibility can on average save of CO2 emissions in the single-digit percentage range in Germany. The results can be used to implement a feedback nudge in smart charging systems to test its effectiveness on the provision of temporal charging flexibility of BEV users.

    AbstractIn order to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative services and technologies spanning over the ICT-enabled power system, realistic models are required. Although nowadays there is a wide range of power system data models, these models do not include a lifelike representation of the ICT system architecture and do not consider the level of interconnectedness of the two systems. In this paper, we propose a methodology for quantification of the geospatial relations between ICT and power system based on openly available data. We describe a graph-theoretic approach, formulate a problem of assessing geospatial relations and discuss the methods required to process publicly available data, retrieve scenarios for different regions and quantify the level of interdependence between ICT and power system.

    Abstract To improve the adaptability of grid load collaborative scheduling, a multi-objective collaborative scheduling method based on a simulated annealing algorithm for the load storage of grid loads on the load side of a new power system is proposed. Local bus transmission technology is adopted to collect the dynamic parameters of energy network load energy storage on the load side of the new power system. The collected load dynamic parameters are fused with energy distribution state parameters to extract the state characteristics of energy network load storage. The simulated annealing algorithm is adopted to realize the load characteristics fusion and adaptive scheduling processing of energy network on the load side of the power system, and the spectral characteristics of the load dynamic parameters are extracted. The dynamic scheduling method of simulated annealing is used to realize the multi-objective optimization of dynamic load of energy network. Based on the co-optimization results of simulated annealing, the optimization application of the simulated annealing algorithm in the multi-objective co-scheduling of loads and energy storage in a new power system is realized. The experimental results show that after 400 iterations, the control convergence accuracy of the proposed method reaches 0.980, which is significantly better than that of the comparison method, and performs well in terms of scheduling efficiency improvement, load scheduling stability, scheduling time and energy waste ratio, proving that the method has good multi-objective integration and strong optimization ability in the scheduling process, and improves the load balanced scheduling and adaptive control ability of the power system.
