    Many aquatic species with stylar polymorphisms have the capacity for clonal and sexual reproduction and are sensitive to the balance of the two reproductive modes when there are a limited number of mating morphs within a population. This study asked how the clonal and sexual reproductive modes perform in populations that contain only a single morph and where fitness gain through sexual reproduction is rare. In clonal aquatic Nymphoides montana, polymorphic populations normally contain two mating morphs in equal frequencies. Populations are sexually fertile and appear to be maintained by pollen transfer between the two partners. However, in a monomorphic population of N. montana where mating opportunities are unavailable, female and male function is impaired and clonality maintains the population. Here, the consequences of intraspecific variation in sexuality were explored between monomorphic and polymorphic N. montana populations in eastern Australia.Comparative measurements of male and female fertility, total dry mass and genotypic diversity using ISSR markers were made between populations with variable sexuality.Very few seeds were produced in the monomorphic population under natural and glasshouse conditions due to dysfunctional pollen and ovules. Stigma-anther separation was minimal in the monomorphic population, which may be a consequence of the relaxed selective pressures that regulate the maintenance of sexual function. However, clonal reproduction was favoured at the expense of sexual reproduction in the monomorphic population; this may facilitate the establishment of sterility throughout the population via resource reallocation or pleiotropic effects. The ISSR results showed that the monomorphic population was one large, single genotype, unlike the multi-genotypic fertile polymorphic populations. Evolutionary loss of sex in a clonal population in which a mating morph is absent was evident; under these conditions clonal growth may assure reproduction and expand the population via spreading stolons.

    Authors: Nurettin Cetinkaya;

    Load forecasting is very important to manage the electrical power systems. Load forecasting can be analyzed in three different ways as short-term, medium-term and long-term. Long-term load forecasting (LTLF) is in need to plan and carry on future energy demand and investment such as size of energy plant. LTLF is affected by energy consumption, national incoming per year, rates of civilization, increasing population rates and moreover economical parameters. Some of the forecasting models use mathematical formulas and statistical models such as correlation and regression analysis. In this study, a new effective expert-supported dynamic programming algorithm (ESDP) has been improved. Additionally, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and mathematical modeling (MM) are used to forecast long term energy demand. ANFIS is one of the famous artificial intelligence and has widely used to solve forecasting problems in literature. In addition to numerical inputs, ANFIS has linguistics inputs. The results obtained from ESDP, ANFIS and MM are compared to show availability. In order to show error levels mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and (MAE) are used. The obtained results show that the proposed algorithms are available.

    Abstract The oxidation characteristics of several small methyl and ethyl esters with carbon number less than six were investigated in laminar flames. The kinetics of such fuels are subsets of those of larger alkyl esters that are constituents of practical biodiesel fuels. A total of seven fuels, namely methyl formate, methyl acetate, methyl propionate, methyl butanoate, ethyl formate, ethyl acetate, and ethyl propionate were considered. Experiments were conducted at atmospheric pressure, elevated reactant temperatures, and over a wide range of equivalence ratios. Laminar flame speeds were determined in the counterflow configuration in which flow velocities were measured using particle image velocimetry. Several detailed kinetic models were tested against the experimental data, and insight was provided into the high-temperature combustion kinetics of the aforementioned fuels. Based on comparisons between experimental and computed results it became apparent that the chemistry of alkyl-ester combustion chemistry is evolving and much needs to be done in order to derive improved rate constants for a wide range of elementary steps.

    Abstract In this work addition of ethanol to high viscosity jatropha methyl ester (JME) through port injection is investigated in order to determine its effect fuel viscosity reduction on diesel engine performance. In addition to viscosity alteration, the impact of ethanol addition on combustion characteristics such as combustion duration, ignition delay and emissions levels from diesel engines fuelled with blends of ethanol, diesel and JME is studied in particular. It is found that blending of oxygenated fuels with diesel modifies the chemical structure and physical properties which again alter the engine operating conditions, combustion parameters and emissions levels. However, the injection of only 5% ethanol through port injection allows for a total of 25% blending of biofuels into diesel yet keeping the fuel characteristics close to that of conventional diesel. However, both experimental and numerical results show that ethanol addition in JME blended diesel results in a slight increase in fuel consumption and thermal efficiency for the same power outputs as that of conventional diesel fuel. Also, the combustion characteristics with ethanol addition include improved maximum in-cylinder peak pressure, cumulative heat release (CHR) rate of heat release (ROHR), in-cylinder peak temperature and combustion duration. Regarding emission characteristics the experimental results show significant reduction in smoke, carbon monoxide (CO) and total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions with extended oxygen mass percentage in the fuel at higher engine loads. However, oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions are found to increase at high loads although the common tradeoff between smoke and NOx is found to be more prominent for the oxygenated fuels.

    White sweet clover found voluntarily growing on a deep bed of soft coal fly ash was found to contain high concentrations of a number of elements including selenium, bromine, and molybdenum, rubidium, strontium, and others. The clover was harvested and fed as 23.5% of a dry pelleted ration to lambs and pregnant goats for up to 173 days. High concentrations of selenium were found in 11 tissues, blood, goats' milk, and excreta of lambs, goats, and newborn kids. Molybdenum in liver, strontium in bone, and bromine and rubidium in animal tissues were also elevated over those in the corresponding tissues of animals fed an identical ration containing control clover grown on soil. No gross or histologic lesions were present in any of the animals.

    The Box–Jenkins model is a polynomial model that uses transfer functions to express relationships between input, output, and noise for a given system. In this article, we present a Box–Jenkins linear model for a lithium-ion battery cell for use in electric vehicles. The model parameter identifications are based on automotive drive-cycle measurements. The proposed model prediction performance is evaluated using the goodness-of-fit criteria and the mean squared error between the Box–Jenkins model and the measured battery cell output. A simulation confirmed that the proposed Box–Jenkins model could adequately capture the battery cell dynamics for different automotive drive cycles and reasonably predict the actual battery cell output. The goodness-of-fit value shows that the Box–Jenkins model matches the battery cell data by 86.85% in the identification phase, and 90.83% in the validation phase for the LA-92 driving cycle. This work demonstrates the potential of using a simple and linear model to predict the battery cell behavior based on a complex identification dataset that represents the actual use of the battery cell in an electric vehicle.

    Abstract Socio-technical transformations towards low-carbon energy systems are on the way in developed countries. Conversely, developing countries tend to be locked in fossil fuels and foster coal-based energy structures, emphasizing reliable and cost-effective energy provision and sidelining environmental concerns. In this study, we identified and analysed the predominant factors related to coal-based power generation in Bangladesh. We applied a mixed-method approach, initially conducting a systematic literature review and, subsequently, semi-structured expert interviews to identify and validate relevant factors. We then assessed their relative importance using an Analytical Hierarchy Process based on expert judgments. The results of this assessment reveal that socio-economic aspects and environmental issues scored highest, while technological aspects and sector regulations were considered to be less relevant for large-scale coal power implementation. We conclude that future energy policies created in Bangladesh will need to use appropriate legal instruments and address issues such as human displacement and resettlement, low levels of public acceptance, health hazards and environmental pollution. Participative policy frameworks should be deployed in coal plant projects, and active monitoring systems are necessary to reduce the negative consequences associated with increased electrification and energy consumption. To address foreseeable structural challenges, it furthermore will be crucial to explore sustainable alternatives.

    Abstract A great deal of heat is wasted in intensive public shower facilities, such as those in schools, barracks and natatoriums, which open up at specified time. It will contribute a lot to energy saving and environmental protection with significant economic benefits to recycle the exhaust heat. In this paper, we propose two different kinds of heat pumps (an electric heat pump and an absorption heat pump) in the heat recovery systems. In both system, the used shower water is drained through a pipe and collected in a gray water pool. When the wastewater reaches certain volume, the heat pump system will begin working and recycling heat. The wastewater is filtered and piped to the heat exchanger to exchange heat with the tap water whose temperature will increase from 12 °C to 25 °C with the wastewater temperature dropping from 30 °C to 17 °C. Then the wastewater is piped to the heat pump evaporator and the tap water is piped to the condenser for farther heating. According to the different characteristics of the electric heat pump and absorption heat pump, we also introduce the processes and control methods of different heat recovery systems in details in this paper. Based on a practical example, this paper analyzes and compares the economic and environmental benefits of three retrofitting schemes, including “exhaust heat recovery using electric heat pump”, “exhaust heat recovery using electric heat pump + gas boiler” and “exhaust heat recovery using direct-fired heat pump”. Then we find out that the heat recovery system using direct-fired absorption heat pump has lower energy consumption, less pollution, lower operating cost, and shorter payback period. And it has a promising practical application.

    Abstract Double and added double stage organic Rankine cycle systems are configured to recover exhaust gas waste heat of dual fuel engines. To evaluate the performance of the models proposed here, energy, exergy and economic analyses are performed. Several working fluids are evaluated for recommendation for double and added double stage organic Rankine cycle systems. In the double stage organic Rankine cycle, cycle 1 and cycle 2 are connected in parallel. Working fluids R123, R141b, and R601 are used in cycle 1, and R245fa, R236ea, and R1233zd in cycle 2. In the double stage organic Rankine cycle, the working fluid combinations of R601-R1233zd, R601-R245fa and R123-R245fa show better performance when considering power, heat transfer area and payback period, which are 1760 kW, 2108.9 m2 and 4.21 year, respectively for R601-R245fa. In the added double stage organic Rankine cycle, cycle 1 and cycle 2 are connected in two stages and cycle 1 and cycle 3 in parallel. The net power of the working fluid combinations of R123-R245fa and R123-R1233zd are 1799 kW and 1782 kW, respectively, which are higher than those of the others. Further, for R123-R245fa, the heat transfer area and payback period are 3352 m2 and 6.20 year, respectively, which is better compared to those of other working fluid combinations.
