  • Improving Deliberative Environmental Management Under Uncertainty examined similarities and differences between expert and public understanding of uncertainty. This collection directly compares expert and layperson interpretations and understandings of different expressions of uncertainty, in the context of evaluating the consequences of proposed environmental management actions that influence economic, social, or health concerns. Data were collected via a Web-based survey where respondents were asked a series of questions after they were given four hypothetical scenarios on the following topics: wind farms, vegetation management, superfund site, and salmon. Each scenario described an environmental proposal along with pros and cons then respondents selected a response option with costs and benefits of the proposal in mind. The first scenario focused on a plan to manage forest vegetation in the northeastern United States, using either conventional methods involving aerial spraying of herbicides or more expensive hand spraying methods intended to reduce adverse impacts on local moose populations. The second scenario focused on a proposal to build a new windfarm in a western state, which would lower electricity rates to local communities but could have negative effects on resident songbird populations. The third scenario focused on a plan to clean up hazardous waste at a large industrial Superfund site. The waste was estimated to have caused 200 children to develop serious respiratory illness from exposure to contaminated drinking water; building a decontamination facility would reduce the number of sick children but would be very expensive and would take time to build. The fourth scenario focused on a plan to reduce the declining population of Chinook Salmon. In order to reduce the Chinook Salmon declines in the Seshon River, an advisory committee must find a balance between the protection of salmon and the use of water to generate electricity, which is a cause in salmon reduction. Participants responded to hypothetical but realistic scenarios involving trade-offs between options presented and other objectives, and were asked a series of questions about their comprehension of the uncertainty information, their preferred choice among the alternatives, and the associated difficulty and amount of effort. Respondents were asked general questions which ranged from how they felt about a particular issue to how easy or difficult it was to answer the questions associated with each scenario. Demographic information includes gender, age and education level. Public Sample: Nationally representative, convienence sample of Decision Research web-panel participants located throughout the United States. Expert Sample: Web site organized by United States Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS) for employees who have undertaken some previous training in resource management and decision-making.     Accelerometer data supporting Inertial Kinetic Energy Harvesters for Wearables: The Benefits of Harvesting at the Foot, this dataset contains accelerometer data from participants walking on a treadmill at a variety of speeds with sensors on the wrist, hip, ankle and foot. Note there is no participant P1. Accessing the raw data: The folders P2 – P13 contain the untrimmed data from the sensors. Sample rate: 100 Hz, units: g Participants were instructed to walk on a treadmill (LifeSpan TR1200i) as close as possible to how they would normally walk, while the speed of the treadmill was controlled by the experimenter. The treadmill was started at 2.4 km/h and the speed increased every 60 s by 0.1 km/h until the treadmill reached 4.3 km/h. Prior to recording each sensor went under a synchronisation procedure where all the sensors were flipped on their z-axis, causing a transition from -1g to +1g. The times of this synchronisation and the time for starting the treadmill is detailed in metadata.xlsx Files ending in .cwa are in Continuous Wave Accelerometer format (a binary format) which can be processed with OmGUI software from Axivity. Files ending in .csv are these files are processed cwa files in a text format, files ending in .resampled.csv have been resampled to 100 Hz using OmGUI. These resampled files account for the fact that the AX3 sensors sample at close to 100 Hz with significant sampling jitter by resampling the data to make the sampling rate exactly 100 Hz.     We investigate the relationship between a thousand-year history of violent conflict in Europe and various reconstructions of temperature and precipitation. We find that conflict was more intense during colder period, just like Zhang et al. (Clim Change 76:459–477, 2006) found for China. This relationship weakens in the industrialized era, and is not robust to the details of the climate reconstruction or to the sample period. As the correlation is negative and weakening, it appears that global warming would not lead to an increase in violent conflict in temperature climates.

    Total 200 participants, 100 male and 100 female were enrolled according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Inclusion criteria were: apparently healthy males and females, age between 19 to 30 years old and agree to participate. Exclusion criteria were: pregnancy, lactation, patients with chronic diseases as arthritis, CVD, T2DM, hypothyroidism, hypertension, and intake of drugs that can affect weight e.g. corticosteroids, anti-depressive medications and insulin. A convenient sample was chosen for selection of enrolled participants, mainly from Taibah University as well as, graduated students in addition to students’ relatives and friends. The questionnaire concerned with demographic data, family history of obesity, physical activity level, and the age of introduction of olive oil in the dietary pattern was filled by face to face interview. Anthropometric measurements were obtained by trained team based on a standardized procedure. Using the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria to define BMI categories (WHO, 1999). A BMI result of less than 18.5kg/m2 is considered underweight, 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 is normal, 25-29.9kg/m2 is overweight, while 30kg/m2 and above is obese. Waist circumference was measured using flexible measuring tape. The Waist circumference cut-offs based on ethnic specific values for European, Sub-Saharan African, Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern (Arab) which is >94 centimeters for men and >80 centimeters for women. Standardized methods were used for measurements. The weight was measured using electronic weight scale, while the height was measured using a stadiometer. Regarding Waist circumference measure, participants were asked to stand with back straight. Heavy clothing was removed from the waist line. The tape was aligned at the top of the hip bone (iliac crest) parallel with the edge of the last palpable rib (nearly 2 centimeters above the navel). The waist measure was taken at the end of a normal expiration and approximated to the nearest 0.5 cm. In accordance to WC definition, exclusion was done for obese and underweight participants (WHO, 2008). Detailed 24-hours recall were taken for two days and the mean level was calculated. Describing dietary intake with a special emphasis on olive oil consumption. Total olive oil consumption per day included green and black olives intake.     This dataset makes use of the UNEP (2018) report, Legal Limits on Single-Use Plastics and Microplastics: A Global Review of National Laws and Regulations, to create tabulated data categorising the type of legislation on single-use plastic bags enacted in 190 countries, updated to March 2019. Categories are Restrictions (ban), Levy/tax, New legislation proposed, Extended Producer Responsibility, Disposal Regulations, No national law found. For countries with bans on single-use plastic bags, full vs partial bans have been indicated. The dataset also draws on plastic waste estimations published in an article by Jambeck et al (2015), which has informed both UNEP 2018 reports on single-use plastics. Finally the dataset includes three indices of the Human Development Index 2019: Employment in Agriculture, Foreign Direct Investment, and Exports/Imports. Analyses of this dataset sought to understand the factors that influenced the type of single-use plastic bag policy a country implements. The supplementary dataset from Jambeck et al shows that middle-income countries (though the economy of each country has been updated in this dataset to reflect the 2019 status) have higher levels of plastic waste than their counterparts. However, ANOVA sets show that it is low-income countries that are most likely to have the most stringent legislations (restrictions and levy/tax), while middle-income countries are more likely to have obscure and largely ungoverned legislation (namely disposal regulation).

    #Observa opinion polls: #---------------------- # #From 1967 and onwards Observa has carried out a number of opinion polls, i.e. surveys of attitudes and habits of life, partly through so-called political index polls (postal panel surveys) and partly through more extensive attitudinal surveys based on interviews. The political index polls have been carried out re- gularly in the period (approx. 10 times a year), whereas the at- titudinal surveys have been carried out quarterly in the period 1969 to 1972. The current data collection of similar data mate- rial over a long period of time makes it possible to carry out various kinds of time series analyses, especially as regards party preference. #Other subjects are usually treated more superficially owing to the conditions under which the surveys are carried out (they are de- signed for publication in daily papers so the main emphasis has been put on topical issues, and only subjects which may be dealt with by means of a limited number of questions are included). #Until 1971 the political index polls were carried out for the daily paper Aktuelt; from 1972 for the daily paper Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten. The attitudinal surveys have been carried out exclusively for Jyllands-Posten. # #Observa Political Index Polls, 1976: #------------------------------------ #In 1976 Observa carried out 10 political index polls.     The impacts of increasing natural climate disasters are threatening food security in the Asia-Pacific region. Rice is Asia’s most important staple food. Climate variability and change directly impact rice production, through changes in rainfall, temperature and CO2 concentrations. The key for sustainable rice crop is water management. Adaptation can occur through shifts of cropping to higher latitudes and can profit from river systems (via irrigation) so far not considered. New opportunities arise to produce more than one crop per year in cooler areas. Asian wheat production in 2005 represents about 43 % of the global total. Changes in agronomic practices, such as earlier plant dates and cultivar substitution will be required. Fisheries play a crucial role in providing food security with the contribution of fish to dietary animal protein being very high in the region – up to 90 % in small island developing states (SIDS). With the warming of the Pacific and Indian Oceans and increased acidification, marine ecosystems are presently under stress. Despite these trends, maintaining or enhancing food production from the sea is critical. However, future sustainability must be maintained whilst also securing biodiversity conservation. Improved fisheries management to address the existing non-climate threats remains paramount in the Indian and Pacific Oceans with sustainable management regimes being established. Climate-related impacts are expected to increase in magnitude over the coming decades, thus preliminary adaptation to climate change is valuable.

    On October 30, 2007, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility (ACRF) sponsored an all-day workshop to assess the status of the ACRF Archive. Focus areas included usability of current functions, plans for revised functions, proposals for new functions, and an overarching discussion of new ideas. Although 13 scientists familiar with ACRF and the ARM Program were invited to the workshop, only 10 scientists were available to attend the workshop. ACRF consists of the infrastructure that was developed to support the ARM Program and includes the ACRF Archive (previously called the ARM Archive). The scientists who participated in the meeting ranged from those who used the Archive frequently to those who seldom or never had accessed the Archive. The group was spread across disciplines, i.e. modelers, conservationists, and others from universities and government laboratories. A few of the participants were funded by the ARM Program, but most were not funded currently by ARM. During the past year, several improvements were made to the ACRF Archive to link it with the ARM/ACRF web pages, add a shopping cart feature, and expand on search parameters. Additional modifications have been proposed and prototypes of these proposals weremore » made available for the participants. The participants were given several exercises to do before the meeting, and their feedback was requested to help identify potential problems and shortcomings with the existing structure and to recommend improvements.« less

  • Improving Deliberative Environmental Management Under Uncertainty examined similarities and differences between expert and public understanding of uncertainty. This collection directly compares expert and layperson interpretations and understandings of different expressions of uncertainty, in the context of evaluating the consequences of proposed environmental management actions that influence economic, social, or health concerns. Data were collected via a Web-based survey where respondents were asked a series of questions after they were given four hypothetical scenarios on the following topics: wind farms, vegetation management, superfund site, and salmon. Each scenario described an environmental proposal along with pros and cons then respondents selected a response option with costs and benefits of the proposal in mind. The first scenario focused on a plan to manage forest vegetation in the northeastern United States, using either conventional methods involving aerial spraying of herbicides or more expensive hand spraying methods intended to reduce adverse impacts on local moose populations. The second scenario focused on a proposal to build a new windfarm in a western state, which would lower electricity rates to local communities but could have negative effects on resident songbird populations. The third scenario focused on a plan to clean up hazardous waste at a large industrial Superfund site. The waste was estimated to have caused 200 children to develop serious respiratory illness from exposure to contaminated drinking water; building a decontamination facility would reduce the number of sick children but would be very expensive and would take time to build. The fourth scenario focused on a plan to reduce the declining population of Chinook Salmon. In order to reduce the Chinook Salmon declines in the Seshon River, an advisory committee must find a balance between the protection of salmon and the use of water to generate electricity, which is a cause in salmon reduction. Participants responded to hypothetical but realistic scenarios involving trade-offs between options presented and other objectives, and were asked a series of questions about their comprehension of the uncertainty information, their preferred choice among the alternatives, and the associated difficulty and amount of effort. Respondents were asked general questions which ranged from how they felt about a particular issue to how easy or difficult it was to answer the questions associated with each scenario. Demographic information includes gender, age and education level. Public Sample: Nationally representative, convienence sample of Decision Research web-panel participants located throughout the United States. Expert Sample: Web site organized by United States Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS) for employees who have undertaken some previous training in resource management and decision-making.     Accelerometer data supporting Inertial Kinetic Energy Harvesters for Wearables: The Benefits of Harvesting at the Foot, this dataset contains accelerometer data from participants walking on a treadmill at a variety of speeds with sensors on the wrist, hip, ankle and foot. Note there is no participant P1. Accessing the raw data: The folders P2 – P13 contain the untrimmed data from the sensors. Sample rate: 100 Hz, units: g Participants were instructed to walk on a treadmill (LifeSpan TR1200i) as close as possible to how they would normally walk, while the speed of the treadmill was controlled by the experimenter. The treadmill was started at 2.4 km/h and the speed increased every 60 s by 0.1 km/h until the treadmill reached 4.3 km/h. Prior to recording each sensor went under a synchronisation procedure where all the sensors were flipped on their z-axis, causing a transition from -1g to +1g. The times of this synchronisation and the time for starting the treadmill is detailed in metadata.xlsx Files ending in .cwa are in Continuous Wave Accelerometer format (a binary format) which can be processed with OmGUI software from Axivity. Files ending in .csv are these files are processed cwa files in a text format, files ending in .resampled.csv have been resampled to 100 Hz using OmGUI. These resampled files account for the fact that the AX3 sensors sample at close to 100 Hz with significant sampling jitter by resampling the data to make the sampling rate exactly 100 Hz.     We investigate the relationship between a thousand-year history of violent conflict in Europe and various reconstructions of temperature and precipitation. We find that conflict was more intense during colder period, just like Zhang et al. (Clim Change 76:459–477, 2006) found for China. This relationship weakens in the industrialized era, and is not robust to the details of the climate reconstruction or to the sample period. As the correlation is negative and weakening, it appears that global warming would not lead to an increase in violent conflict in temperature climates.

    Total 200 participants, 100 male and 100 female were enrolled according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Inclusion criteria were: apparently healthy males and females, age between 19 to 30 years old and agree to participate. Exclusion criteria were: pregnancy, lactation, patients with chronic diseases as arthritis, CVD, T2DM, hypothyroidism, hypertension, and intake of drugs that can affect weight e.g. corticosteroids, anti-depressive medications and insulin. A convenient sample was chosen for selection of enrolled participants, mainly from Taibah University as well as, graduated students in addition to students’ relatives and friends. The questionnaire concerned with demographic data, family history of obesity, physical activity level, and the age of introduction of olive oil in the dietary pattern was filled by face to face interview. Anthropometric measurements were obtained by trained team based on a standardized procedure. Using the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria to define BMI categories (WHO, 1999). A BMI result of less than 18.5kg/m2 is considered underweight, 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 is normal, 25-29.9kg/m2 is overweight, while 30kg/m2 and above is obese. Waist circumference was measured using flexible measuring tape. The Waist circumference cut-offs based on ethnic specific values for European, Sub-Saharan African, Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern (Arab) which is >94 centimeters for men and >80 centimeters for women. Standardized methods were used for measurements. The weight was measured using electronic weight scale, while the height was measured using a stadiometer. Regarding Waist circumference measure, participants were asked to stand with back straight. Heavy clothing was removed from the waist line. The tape was aligned at the top of the hip bone (iliac crest) parallel with the edge of the last palpable rib (nearly 2 centimeters above the navel). The waist measure was taken at the end of a normal expiration and approximated to the nearest 0.5 cm. In accordance to WC definition, exclusion was done for obese and underweight participants (WHO, 2008). Detailed 24-hours recall were taken for two days and the mean level was calculated. Describing dietary intake with a special emphasis on olive oil consumption. Total olive oil consumption per day included green and black olives intake.     This dataset makes use of the UNEP (2018) report, Legal Limits on Single-Use Plastics and Microplastics: A Global Review of National Laws and Regulations, to create tabulated data categorising the type of legislation on single-use plastic bags enacted in 190 countries, updated to March 2019. Categories are Restrictions (ban), Levy/tax, New legislation proposed, Extended Producer Responsibility, Disposal Regulations, No national law found. For countries with bans on single-use plastic bags, full vs partial bans have been indicated. The dataset also draws on plastic waste estimations published in an article by Jambeck et al (2015), which has informed both UNEP 2018 reports on single-use plastics. Finally the dataset includes three indices of the Human Development Index 2019: Employment in Agriculture, Foreign Direct Investment, and Exports/Imports. Analyses of this dataset sought to understand the factors that influenced the type of single-use plastic bag policy a country implements. The supplementary dataset from Jambeck et al shows that middle-income countries (though the economy of each country has been updated in this dataset to reflect the 2019 status) have higher levels of plastic waste than their counterparts. However, ANOVA sets show that it is low-income countries that are most likely to have the most stringent legislations (restrictions and levy/tax), while middle-income countries are more likely to have obscure and largely ungoverned legislation (namely disposal regulation).

    #Observa opinion polls: #---------------------- # #From 1967 and onwards Observa has carried out a number of opinion polls, i.e. surveys of attitudes and habits of life, partly through so-called political index polls (postal panel surveys) and partly through more extensive attitudinal surveys based on interviews. The political index polls have been carried out re- gularly in the period (approx. 10 times a year), whereas the at- titudinal surveys have been carried out quarterly in the period 1969 to 1972. The current data collection of similar data mate- rial over a long period of time makes it possible to carry out various kinds of time series analyses, especially as regards party preference. #Other subjects are usually treated more superficially owing to the conditions under which the surveys are carried out (they are de- signed for publication in daily papers so the main emphasis has been put on topical issues, and only subjects which may be dealt with by means of a limited number of questions are included). #Until 1971 the political index polls were carried out for the daily paper Aktuelt; from 1972 for the daily paper Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten. The attitudinal surveys have been carried out exclusively for Jyllands-Posten. # #Observa Political Index Polls, 1976: #------------------------------------ #In 1976 Observa carried out 10 political index polls. All the questions from these surveys are found in DDA-0958: Observa Political Index Polls, 1976.     The impacts of increasing natural climate disasters are threatening food security in the Asia-Pacific region. Rice is Asia’s most important staple food. Climate variability and change directly impact rice production, through changes in rainfall, temperature and CO2 concentrations. The key for sustainable rice crop is water management. Adaptation can occur through shifts of cropping to higher latitudes and can profit from river systems (via irrigation) so far not considered. New opportunities arise to produce more than one crop per year in cooler areas. Asian wheat production in 2005 represents about 43 % of the global total. Changes in agronomic practices, such as earlier plant dates and cultivar substitution will be required. Fisheries play a crucial role in providing food security with the contribution of fish to dietary animal protein being very high in the region – up to 90 % in small island developing states (SIDS). With the warming of the Pacific and Indian Oceans and increased acidification, marine ecosystems are presently under stress. Despite these trends, maintaining or enhancing food production from the sea is critical. However, future sustainability must be maintained whilst also securing biodiversity conservation. Improved fisheries management to address the existing non-climate threats remains paramount in the Indian and Pacific Oceans with sustainable management regimes being established. Climate-related impacts are expected to increase in magnitude over the coming decades, thus preliminary adaptation to climate change is valuable.

    SUMMARYThis article discusses how decentralisation policies are enacted in the planning and implementation of natural resource management interventions in rural Ethiopia. A key element of decentralisation policy is the emphasis on greater participation by local communities. Drawing on qualitative research conducted with government staff and farmers, this paper illustrates how different actors perceive and implement national policy and how these actions affect the longer‐term sustainability of land management interventions.     On October 30, 2007, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility (ACRF) sponsored an all-day workshop to assess the status of the ACRF Archive. Focus areas included usability of current functions, plans for revised functions, proposals for new functions, and an overarching discussion of new ideas. Although 13 scientists familiar with ACRF and the ARM Program were invited to the workshop, only 10 scientists were available to attend the workshop. ACRF consists of the infrastructure that was developed to support the ARM Program and includes the ACRF Archive (previously called the ARM Archive). The scientists who participated in the meeting ranged from those who used the Archive frequently to those who seldom or never had accessed the Archive. The group was spread across disciplines, i.e. modelers, conservationists, and others from universities and government laboratories. A few of the participants were funded by the ARM Program, but most were not funded currently by ARM. During the past year, several improvements were made to the ACRF Archive to link it with the ARM/ACRF web pages, add a shopping cart feature, and expand on search parameters. Additional modifications have been proposed and prototypes of these proposals weremore » made available for the participants. The participants were given several exercises to do before the meeting, and their feedback was requested to help identify potential problems and shortcomings with the existing structure and to recommend improvements.« less
