Synopsis Climate change will increase the frequency and intensity of extreme climatic events (e.g., storms) that result in repeated pulses of hyposalinity in nearshore ecosystems. Sea urchins inhabit these ecosystems and are stenohaline (restricted to salinity levels ∼32‰), thus are particularly susceptible to hyposalinity events. As key benthic omnivores, sea urchins use hydrostatic adhesive tube feet for numerous functions, including attachment to and locomotion on the substratum as they graze for food. Hyposalinity severely impacts sea urchin locomotor and adhesive performance but several ecologically relevant and climate change-related questions remain. First, do sea urchin locomotion and adhesion acclimate to repeated pulses of hyposalinity? Second, how do tube feet respond to tensile forces during single and repeated hyposalinity events? Third, do the negative effects of hyposalinity exposure persist following a return to normal salinity levels? To answer these questions, we repeatedly exposed green sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) to pulses of three different salinities (control: 32‰, moderate hyposalinity: 22‰, severe hyposalinity: 16‰) over the course of two months and measured locomotor performance, adhesive performance, and tube foot tensile behavior. We also measured these parameters 20 h after sea urchins returned to normal salinity levels. We found no evidence that tube feet performance and properties acclimate to repeated pulses of hyposalinity, at least over the timescale examined in this study. In contrast, hyposalinity has severe consequences on locomotion, adhesion, and tube foot tensile behavior, and these impacts are not limited to the hyposalinity exposure. Our results suggest both moderate and severe hyposalinity events have the potential to increase sea urchin dislodgment and reduce movement, which may impact sea urchin distribution and their role in marine communities.

Vingerhoets; Jeroen ter Schiphorst;The luminescent solar concentrator has the potential of widespread use as a generator of electricity from sunlight well-suited for use in the urban environment owing to its adaptability in shape and coloration. The device performance is heavily dependent on the ability to transport light long distances to the edges. A common organic luminophore used in the device is based on a perylene core. In this work, we describe an overlooked effect of UV illumination on the appearance and efficiency of these devices. An additional absorption peak appears upon polymerization under intense UV in nitrogen atmosphere which significantly reduces the edge emissions from the device. The additional absorbance peak disappears after exposure to air, indicating the presence of a radical anion being formed during the UV light exposure. This suggests newly-produced LSC devices should be allowed to stand a period of time under ambient conditions before their performance characteristics are determined, which could have implications in potential future commercialization of the technology.

The electrical properties have been investigated at the nano-scale by conductive Atomic Force Microscopy (c-AFM) and at macro-scale by temperature dependent conductivity measurements. The mixture is composed of highly conductive Si nanoclusters and moderately conductive SiC nanoclusters in a disordered matrix. The conduction mechanism takes place via band states induced by the disorder at the interface between nanodot clusters. Structural properties have been extracted by optical spectroscopy analyses. The results contribute to the understanding of the microscopical electronic mechanisms of the composite material, which is a candidate for third generation photovoltaics.

The main idea here is to convert solar energy into electricity. One type of solar cell that shows potential in replacing today’s crystalline silicon cells is the thin film solar cell (TFSC). Yet, the sun absorbing semiconductors used in the commercial TFSCs contain scarce elements such as indium, cadmium and tellurium, which may cause problems if the technique is going to grow to a big scale energy producer. Earth abundant sun absorbing materials are therefore of great interest, and several possible replacements are under investigation. In this project two olivine structured ternary metal chalcogenides were investigated: manganese silicon sulfide (Mn2SiS4) and iron silicon sulfide (Fe2SiS4). The goal was to deposit thin films by reactive magnetron sputtering from manganese/iron and silicon targets with mixture of Ar and H2S gas. Afterwards the films were crystallized by a sulfurization process at high temperature. The samples were created with a composition gradient and investigated by SEM, EDS and XRD. Results showed that a single phase of Mn2SiS4 was successfully created in thin film form for the first time. Multiple attempts on manufacturing Fe2SiS4 were performed, but didn't show sufficient progress yet. The analysis showed formation of pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS, x<0.2) and SiS2 phases instead of the targeted material. In both cases it is important to provide additional studies to determine if the selected compounds could be used as an absorber layer in TFSC structures.

Synopsis Climatic and geomorphological changes during the Quaternary period impacted global patterns of speciation and diversification across a wide range of taxa, but few studies have examined these effects on African riverine fish. The lower Congo River is an excellent natural laboratory for understanding complex speciation and population diversification processes, as it is hydrologically extremely dynamic and recognized as a continental hotspot of diversity harboring many narrowly endemic species. A previous study using genome-wide SNP data highlighted the importance of dynamic hydrological regimes to the diversification and speciation in lower Congo River cichlids. However, historical climate and hydrological changes (e.g., reduced river discharge during extended dry periods) have likely also influenced ichthyofaunal diversification processes in this system. The lower Congo River offers a unique opportunity to study climate-driven changes in river discharge, given the massive volume of water from the entire Congo basin flowing through this short stretch of the river. Here, we, for the first time, investigate the impacts of paleoclimatic factors on ichthyofaunal diversification in this system by inferring divergence times and modeling patterns of gene flow in four endemic lamprologine cichlids, including the blind cichlid, Lamprologus lethops. Our results suggest that Quaternary climate changes associated with river discharge fluctuations may have impacted the diversification of species along the system and the emergence of cryptophthalmic phenotype in some endemic species. Our study, using reduced representation sequencing (2RADseq), indicates that the lower Congo River lamprologines emerged during the Early-Middle Pleistocene transition, characterized as one of the earth’s major climatic transformation periods. Modeling results suggest that gene flow across populations and between species was not constant but occurred in temporally constrained pulses. We show that these results correlate with glacial–interglacial fluctuations. The current hyper-diverse fish assemblages of the lower Congo River riverscape likely reflect the synergistic effects of multiple drivers fueling complex evolutionary processes through time.

Abstract Aims To identify the promising oleaginous Aspergillus oryzae strain and leverage its lipid and biomass production through a mathematical model. Methods and results Comparative profiling of the cell growth and total fatty acid (TFA) content among 13 strains of A. oryzae was performed to explore the discrimination in their lipid productions. The oleaginicity of A. oryzae was found to be strain dependent, where the fungal strain BCC7051 exhibited superior performance in producing lipid-rich biomass by submerged fermentation. The TFA contents of the strain BCC7051 were comparable when cultivated at a range of pH values (pH 3.5–6.5) and temperatures (24–42°C). The mathematical model was generated, well describing and predicting the fungal growth and lipid phenotypic traits at various temperatures and carbon substrates. Conclusion The A. oryzae strain BCC7051 was a robust cell factory, acquiring economically feasible options for producing valuable lipid-based products.

Abstract Increases in temperatures and atmospheric CO2 concentration influence the growth performance of trees worldwide. The direction and intensity of tree growth and physiological responses to changing climate do, however, vary according to environmental conditions. Here we present complex, long-term, tree-physiological responses to unprecedented temperature increase in East Asia. For this purpose, we studied radial growth and isotopic (δ13C and δ18O) variations using tree-ring data for the past 100 yr of dominant Quercus mongolica trees from the cool-temperate forests from Hallasan, South Korea. Overall, we found that tree stem basal area increment, intercellular CO2 concentration and intrinsic water-use efficiency significantly increased over the last century. We observed, however, short-term variability in the trends of these variables among four periods identified by change point analysis. In comparison, δ18O did not show significant changes over time, suggesting no major hydrological changes in this precipitation-rich area. The strength and direction of growth–climate relationships also varied during the past 100 yr. Basal area increment (BAI) did not show significant relationships with the climate over the 1924–1949 and 1975–1999 periods. However, over 1950–1974, BAI was negatively affected by both temperature and precipitation, while after 2000, a temperature stimulus was observed. Finally, over the past two decades, the increase in Q. mongolica tree growth accelerated and was associated with high spring–summer temperatures and atmospheric CO2 concentrations and decreasing intrinsic water-use efficiency, δ18O and vapour pressure deficit, suggesting that the photosynthetic rate continued increasing under no water limitations. Our results indicate that the performance of dominant trees of one of the most widely distributed species in East Asia has benefited from recent global changes, mainly over the past two decades. Such findings are essential for projections of forest dynamics and carbon sequestration under climate change.

Fundamental studies in catalysis rely on well-defined catalyst materials and reactions. In this thesis we focused on the synthesis, characterization and performance of carbon-supported Cu-based materials in hydrogenation catalysis. The main aim was to investigate the effects of the Cu nanoparticle size, support interactions and metal oxide promotion, on the catalytic performance in three industrially-relevant gas-phase hydrogenation reactions, namely methanol synthesis by hydrogenation of CO and CO2, selective hydrogenation of butadiene in excess of propene, and hydrogenation of ethyl acetate to ethanol, a new reaction in our research group. In summary, the physicochemical phenomena involved in catalyst assembly were investigated on the nanometer scale for a series of carbon-supported Cu catalysts, which allowed us to prepare model catalysts with tailored structures. The work presented in this thesis showed that disentangling the effects of Cu particle size, supports and promoters, facilitated the establishment of structure-performance relationships in three important hydrogenation reactions. The advanced understanding of these relationships may assist in developing more active, selective and stable Cu-based hydrogenation catalysts, which may ultimately contribute to more efficient use of energy and materials resources.

The hydration of CO2 suffers from kinetic inefficiencies that make its natural trapping impractically sluggish. However, CO2-fixing carbonic anhydrases (CAs) remarkably accelerate its equilibration by 6 orders of magnitude and are, therefore, "ideal" catalysts. Notably, CA has been detected in ureolytic bacteria, suggesting its potential involvement in microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), yet the dynamics of the urease (Ur) and CA genes remain poorly understood. Here, through the use of the ureolytic bacteriumSporosarcina pasteurii, we investigate the differing role of Ur and CA in ureolysis, CO2 hydration, and CaCO3 precipitation with increasing CO2(g) concentrations. We show that Ur gene up-regulation coincides with an increase in [HCO3-] following the hydration of CO2 to HCO3- by CA. Hence, CA physiologically promotes buffering, which enhances solubility trapping and affects the phase of the CaCO3 mineral formed. Understanding the role of CO2 hydration on the performance of ureolysis and CaCO3 precipitation provides essential new insights, required for the development of next-generation biocatalyzed CO2 trapping technologies.

The advantage of bioethanol is that is obtained by fermentation of renewable resources that capture carbon dioxide during its growing providing a null net balance of carbon dioxide emissions. Applying the concept of green engineering led to total or partial substitution of fossil fuel. The main drawback is that fermentation is produced in diluted aqueous media and the recovery of ethanol is an energy intensive operation and in Europe, the maximum ethanol content in fuel allowed by legislation is 10% wt (Directive 2009/10/EC). The objective of this project is to provide a process scheme that led to dehydrate bioethanol and blend directly with gasoline and gasoline additive, tert-amyl-methyl ether (TAME). This process must to be viable in terms of energy, economics and environmental aspects. A bibliographic search is presented to determine how much energy is necessary to produce one kilogram of bioethanol. The results of the bibliographic search shown that for a diluted feed stream of ethanol, the best process scheme consist on two distillation columns and one decanter. Hence, five process schemes are presented: (1-3) with the conventional configuration (two distillation column and one decanter) and (4-5) with a novel configuration (one distillation column, with a lateral extraction, and one decanter). The residue curve maps and liquid-liquid equilibrium (RCM-LLE) with their topologies are presented. The RCM-LLE allows to illustrate the thermodynamic behavior of the entrainers used and verify the feasibility. The software used to carry out the rigorous simulations is ASPEN Plus ® v10 using the thermodynamically model NRTL. The annual production established is 18kt/year of a mixture ethanol-gasoline-TAME. The converged results of the simulations allow to compare all the process schemes in terms of energy, sizing and economic aspects, such as raw materials cost, utilities cost, equipment cost and income statement. Synopsis Climate change will increase the frequency and intensity of extreme climatic events (e.g., storms) that result in repeated pulses of hyposalinity in nearshore ecosystems. Sea urchins inhabit these ecosystems and are stenohaline (restricted to salinity levels ∼32‰), thus are particularly susceptible to hyposalinity events. As key benthic omnivores, sea urchins use hydrostatic adhesive tube feet for numerous functions, including attachment to and locomotion on the substratum as they graze for food. Hyposalinity severely impacts sea urchin locomotor and adhesive performance but several ecologically relevant and climate change-related questions remain. First, do sea urchin locomotion and adhesion acclimate to repeated pulses of hyposalinity? Second, how do tube feet respond to tensile forces during single and repeated hyposalinity events? Third, do the negative effects of hyposalinity exposure persist following a return to normal salinity levels? To answer these questions, we repeatedly exposed green sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) to pulses of three different salinities (control: 32‰, moderate hyposalinity: 22‰, severe hyposalinity: 16‰) over the course of two months and measured locomotor performance, adhesive performance, and tube foot tensile behavior. We also measured these parameters 20 h after sea urchins returned to normal salinity levels. We found no evidence that tube feet performance and properties acclimate to repeated pulses of hyposalinity, at least over the timescale examined in this study. In contrast, hyposalinity has severe consequences on locomotion, adhesion, and tube foot tensile behavior, and these impacts are not limited to the hyposalinity exposure. Our results suggest both moderate and severe hyposalinity events have the potential to increase sea urchin dislodgment and reduce movement, which may impact sea urchin distribution and their role in marine communities.

Vingerhoets; Jeroen ter Schiphorst;The luminescent solar concentrator has the potential of widespread use as a generator of electricity from sunlight well-suited for use in the urban environment owing to its adaptability in shape and coloration. The device performance is heavily dependent on the ability to transport light long distances to the edges. A common organic luminophore used in the device is based on a perylene core. In this work, we describe an overlooked effect of UV illumination on the appearance and efficiency of these devices. An additional absorption peak appears upon polymerization under intense UV in nitrogen atmosphere which significantly reduces the edge emissions from the device. The additional absorbance peak disappears after exposure to air, indicating the presence of a radical anion being formed during the UV light exposure. This suggests newly-produced LSC devices should be allowed to stand a period of time under ambient conditions before their performance characteristics are determined, which could have implications in potential future commercialization of the technology.

The electrical properties have been investigated at the nano-scale by conductive Atomic Force Microscopy (c-AFM) and at macro-scale by temperature dependent conductivity measurements. The mixture is composed of highly conductive Si nanoclusters and moderately conductive SiC nanoclusters in a disordered matrix. The conduction mechanism takes place via band states induced by the disorder at the interface between nanodot clusters. Structural properties have been extracted by optical spectroscopy analyses. The results contribute to the understanding of the microscopical electronic mechanisms of the composite material, which is a candidate for third generation photovoltaics.

The main idea here is to convert solar energy into electricity. One type of solar cell that shows potential in replacing today’s crystalline silicon cells is the thin film solar cell (TFSC). Yet, the sun absorbing semiconductors used in the commercial TFSCs contain scarce elements such as indium, cadmium and tellurium, which may cause problems if the technique is going to grow to a big scale energy producer. Earth abundant sun absorbing materials are therefore of great interest, and several possible replacements are under investigation. In this project two olivine structured ternary metal chalcogenides were investigated: manganese silicon sulfide (Mn2SiS4) and iron silicon sulfide (Fe2SiS4). The goal was to deposit thin films by reactive magnetron sputtering from manganese/iron and silicon targets with mixture of Ar and H2S gas. Afterwards the films were crystallized by a sulfurization process at high temperature. The samples were created with a composition gradient and investigated by SEM, EDS and XRD. Results showed that a single phase of Mn2SiS4 was successfully created in thin film form for the first time. Multiple attempts on manufacturing Fe2SiS4 were performed, but didn't show sufficient progress yet. The analysis showed formation of pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS, x<0.2) and SiS2 phases instead of the targeted material. In both cases it is important to provide additional studies to determine if the selected compounds could be used as an absorber layer in TFSC structures.

Synopsis Climatic and geomorphological changes during the Quaternary period impacted global patterns of speciation and diversification across a wide range of taxa, but few studies have examined these effects on African riverine fish. The lower Congo River is an excellent natural laboratory for understanding complex speciation and population diversification processes, as it is hydrologically extremely dynamic and recognized as a continental hotspot of diversity harboring many narrowly endemic species. A previous study using genome-wide SNP data highlighted the importance of dynamic hydrological regimes to the diversification and speciation in lower Congo River cichlids. However, historical climate and hydrological changes (e.g., reduced river discharge during extended dry periods) have likely also influenced ichthyofaunal diversification processes in this system. The lower Congo River offers a unique opportunity to study climate-driven changes in river discharge, given the massive volume of water from the entire Congo basin flowing through this short stretch of the river. Here, we, for the first time, investigate the impacts of paleoclimatic factors on ichthyofaunal diversification in this system by inferring divergence times and modeling patterns of gene flow in four endemic lamprologine cichlids, including the blind cichlid, Lamprologus lethops. Our results suggest that Quaternary climate changes associated with river discharge fluctuations may have impacted the diversification of species along the system and the emergence of cryptophthalmic phenotype in some endemic species. Our study, using reduced representation sequencing (2RADseq), indicates that the lower Congo River lamprologines emerged during the Early-Middle Pleistocene transition, characterized as one of the earth’s major climatic transformation periods. Modeling results suggest that gene flow across populations and between species was not constant but occurred in temporally constrained pulses. We show that these results correlate with glacial–interglacial fluctuations. The current hyper-diverse fish assemblages of the lower Congo River riverscape likely reflect the synergistic effects of multiple drivers fueling complex evolutionary processes through time.

Abstract Aims To identify the promising oleaginous Aspergillus oryzae strain and leverage its lipid and biomass production through a mathematical model. Methods and results Comparative profiling of the cell growth and total fatty acid (TFA) content among 13 strains of A. oryzae was performed to explore the discrimination in their lipid productions. The oleaginicity of A. oryzae was found to be strain dependent, where the fungal strain BCC7051 exhibited superior performance in producing lipid-rich biomass by submerged fermentation. The TFA contents of the strain BCC7051 were comparable when cultivated at a range of pH values (pH 3.5–6.5) and temperatures (24–42°C). The mathematical model was generated, well describing and predicting the fungal growth and lipid phenotypic traits at various temperatures and carbon substrates. Conclusion The A. oryzae strain BCC7051 was a robust cell factory, acquiring economically feasible options for producing valuable lipid-based products.

Abstract Increases in temperatures and atmospheric CO2 concentration influence the growth performance of trees worldwide. The direction and intensity of tree growth and physiological responses to changing climate do, however, vary according to environmental conditions. Here we present complex, long-term, tree-physiological responses to unprecedented temperature increase in East Asia. For this purpose, we studied radial growth and isotopic (δ13C and δ18O) variations using tree-ring data for the past 100 yr of dominant Quercus mongolica trees from the cool-temperate forests from Hallasan, South Korea. Overall, we found that tree stem basal area increment, intercellular CO2 concentration and intrinsic water-use efficiency significantly increased over the last century. We observed, however, short-term variability in the trends of these variables among four periods identified by change point analysis. In comparison, δ18O did not show significant changes over time, suggesting no major hydrological changes in this precipitation-rich area. The strength and direction of growth–climate relationships also varied during the past 100 yr. Basal area increment (BAI) did not show significant relationships with the climate over the 1924–1949 and 1975–1999 periods. However, over 1950–1974, BAI was negatively affected by both temperature and precipitation, while after 2000, a temperature stimulus was observed. Finally, over the past two decades, the increase in Q. mongolica tree growth accelerated and was associated with high spring–summer temperatures and atmospheric CO2 concentrations and decreasing intrinsic water-use efficiency, δ18O and vapour pressure deficit, suggesting that the photosynthetic rate continued increasing under no water limitations. Our results indicate that the performance of dominant trees of one of the most widely distributed species in East Asia has benefited from recent global changes, mainly over the past two decades. Such findings are essential for projections of forest dynamics and carbon sequestration under climate change.

Fundamental studies in catalysis rely on well-defined catalyst materials and reactions. In this thesis we focused on the synthesis, characterization and performance of carbon-supported Cu-based materials in hydrogenation catalysis. The main aim was to investigate the effects of the Cu nanoparticle size, support interactions and metal oxide promotion, on the catalytic performance in three industrially-relevant gas-phase hydrogenation reactions, namely methanol synthesis by hydrogenation of CO and CO2, selective hydrogenation of butadiene in excess of propene, and hydrogenation of ethyl acetate to ethanol, a new reaction in our research group. In summary, the physicochemical phenomena involved in catalyst assembly were investigated on the nanometer scale for a series of carbon-supported Cu catalysts, which allowed us to prepare model catalysts with tailored structures. The work presented in this thesis showed that disentangling the effects of Cu particle size, supports and promoters, facilitated the establishment of structure-performance relationships in three important hydrogenation reactions. The advanced understanding of these relationships may assist in developing more active, selective and stable Cu-based hydrogenation catalysts, which may ultimately contribute to more efficient use of energy and materials resources.

The hydration of CO2 suffers from kinetic inefficiencies that make its natural trapping impractically sluggish. However, CO2-fixing carbonic anhydrases (CAs) remarkably accelerate its equilibration by 6 orders of magnitude and are, therefore, "ideal" catalysts. Notably, CA has been detected in ureolytic bacteria, suggesting its potential involvement in microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), yet the dynamics of the urease (Ur) and CA genes remain poorly understood. Here, through the use of the ureolytic bacteriumSporosarcina pasteurii, we investigate the differing role of Ur and CA in ureolysis, CO2 hydration, and CaCO3 precipitation with increasing CO2(g) concentrations. We show that Ur gene up-regulation coincides with an increase in [HCO3-] following the hydration of CO2 to HCO3- by CA. Hence, CA physiologically promotes buffering, which enhances solubility trapping and affects the phase of the CaCO3 mineral formed. Understanding the role of CO2 hydration on the performance of ureolysis and CaCO3 precipitation provides essential new insights, required for the development of next-generation biocatalyzed CO2 trapping technologies.

The advantage of bioethanol is that is obtained by fermentation of renewable resources that capture carbon dioxide during its growing providing a null net balance of carbon dioxide emissions. Applying the concept of green engineering led to total or partial substitution of fossil fuel. The main drawback is that fermentation is produced in diluted aqueous media and the recovery of ethanol is an energy intensive operation and in Europe, the maximum ethanol content in fuel allowed by legislation is 10% wt (Directive 2009/10/EC). The objective of this project is to provide a process scheme that led to dehydrate bioethanol and blend directly with gasoline and gasoline additive, tert-amyl-methyl ether (TAME). This process must to be viable in terms of energy, economics and environmental aspects. A bibliographic search is presented to determine how much energy is necessary to produce one kilogram of bioethanol. The results of the bibliographic search shown that for a diluted feed stream of ethanol, the best process scheme consist on two distillation columns and one decanter. Hence, five process schemes are presented: (1-3) with the conventional configuration (two distillation column and one decanter) and (4-5) with a novel configuration (one distillation column, with a lateral extraction, and one decanter). The residue curve maps and liquid-liquid equilibrium (RCM-LLE) with their topologies are presented. The RCM-LLE allows to illustrate the thermodynamic behavior of the entrainers used and verify the feasibility. The software used to carry out the rigorous simulations is ASPEN Plus ® v10 using the thermodynamically model NRTL. The annual production established is 18kt/year of a mixture ethanol-gasoline-TAME. The converged results of the simulations allow to compare all the process schemes in terms of energy, sizing and economic aspects, such as raw materials cost, utilities cost, equipment cost and income statement.
