A large amount of CO2 emission due to building energy consumption has threatened the sustainable development of the world. Improvement on the building energy performance, especially by integration with renewable energy resources has attracted interest worldwide to reduce greenhouse gas emission to make our society more sustainable. This Special Issue on building integrated renewable energy was open to all contributors in the field of building energy efficiency. The original experimental studies, numerical simulations, and reviews in all aspects of renewable energy utilization, management, and optimization have been considered. In the event, all these topics were covered in the extensive submissions accepted, but interesting papers on other aspects of building energy efficiency were also received. The purpose of this editorial is to summarize the main research findings of accepted papers in this Special Issue, including the use of renewable energy and energy saving technologies in buildings and identify a number of research questions and research directions.

To enable engineers, developers and policy-makers to better understand the implications of energy systems and services, computer-generated visualization is a powerful tool to inform a range of technological options and to analyze the effects of energy system strategies. Visualization increases the transparency of results and the understanding of interactions between users and energy systems. This paper presents a novel conceptual framework for integrating energy systems, infrastructure and services optimization with a visualization and simulation platform. It focuses on the development of a tool for low-carbon energy systems and high quality energy services at precinct scale. The paper describes the vision and architectural design for the integrated framework. It is expected to serve as a next generation approach to managing energy services, carbon emissions and efficient resource use in the built environment. This will help to deliver new environmentally sustainable infrastructure and achieve carbon neutrality in urban development.

Vanholder;In response to Earth's accelerating climate crisis, we, an international group of nephrologists, call on our global community to unite and align kidney care in accordance with United Nation's 26th Conference of the Parties health sector principles. We announce a global and inclusive initiative, "GREEN-K": Global Environmental Evolution in Nephrology and Kidney Care, with a vision of "sustainable kidney care for a healthy planet and healthy kidneys" and mission to "promote and support environmentally sustainable and resilient kidney care globally through advocacy, education, and collaboration." A patient-centric approach that permits climate change mitigation and adaptation is proposed. Multi-stakeholder GREEN-K action and focus areas will include education, sustainable clinical care, and advances toward environmentally sustainable innovations, procurement, and infrastructure. Mindful of the disproportionately high climate impact of kidney therapies, we welcome the opportunity to work together in shared accountability to patients and Earth's natural systems.

Although nations with active forest sectors could be subject to unique factors that discourage the increased use of wood for energy, lessons learned from nations with well-developed woody biomass energy sectors could be used to assist in the development of nascent woody biomass energy sectors elsewhere. Here, energy sector data and relevant policies from Austria, Finland, Germany and Sweden (OECD countries with well-developed, modern wood energy sectors) are compared with those from Australia and Canada (OECD countries with less mature wood energy sectors). The energy sectors of the EU nations considered in this analysis exhibit striking differences with Australia and Canada. Of particular interest are critical differences in the supply of domestic primary energy, energy used per unit GDP, sovereign energy security, the mix of energy sources utilised, the economic viability of non-hydro renewables and the extent to which economies depend on fossil fuels. The policies affecting renewable energy sector development, including woody biomass availability and GHG reduction targets, also differ significantly. Adoption of new technologies with niche applications, leveraged with knowledge from the best practices and experience of countries with well-established bioenergy supply chains, represent an opportunity to set strong foundations for bioenergy production in countries with immature bioenergy sectors. Based on this analysis, it appears prima facie that the goal of reducing GHG emissions is only one of many factors that determine how much emphasis individual nations place on developing non-hydro renewable energy sectors (including woody biomass). The development of a woody biomass energy sector may be driven most strongly by regional issues, such as the need for less expensive waste disposal, cost-effective substitutions for fossil fuels, local economic development and energy resilience. © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Although nations with active forest sectors could be subject to unique factors that discourage the increased use of wood for energy, lessons learned from nations with well-developed woody biomass energy sectors could be used to assist in the development of nascent woody biomass energy sectors elsewhere. Here, energy sector data and relevant policies from Austria, Finland, Germany and Sweden (OECD countries with well-developed, modern wood energy sectors) are compared with those from Australia and Canada (OECD countries with less mature wood energy sectors). The energy sectors of the EU nations considered in this analysis exhibit striking differences with Australia and Canada. Of particular interest are critical differences in the supply of domestic primary energy, energy used per unit GDP, sovereign energy security, the mix of energy sources utilised, the economic viability of non-hydro renewables and the extent to which economies depend on fossil fuels. The policies affecting renewable energy sector development, including woody biomass availability and GHG reduction targets, also differ significantly. Adoption of new technologies with niche applications, leveraged with knowledge from the best practices and experience of countries with well-established bioenergy supply chains, represent an opportunity to set strong foundations for bioenergy production in countries with immature bioenergy sectors. Based on this analysis, it appears prima facie that the goal of reducing GHG emissions is only one of many factors that determine how much emphasis individual nations place on developing non-hydro renewable energy sectors (including woody biomass). The development of a woody biomass energy sector may be driven most strongly by regional issues, such as the need for less expensive waste disposal, cost-effective substitutions for fossil fuels, local economic development and energy resilience. © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Questions remain about understanding why HIVST encouraged testing and how such success can be translated to programmatic implementation. Methods We conducted a qualitative investigation of how FORTH participants experienced and perceived HIVST. Stratified sampling was used to recruit gay and bisexual men participating in the FORTH HIVST intervention to take part in interviews, focusing on infrequent testers and those who had received inaccurate HIVST results. Results Our analysis identified several prominent themes organized into two overarching domains from the 15 interviews: (i) aspects of HIVST contributing to HIV testing frequency, and (ii) sustaining HIVST into the future. Participants also believed that their use of HIVST in the future would depend on the test kit’s reliability, particularly when compared with highly reliable clinic-based testing. Conclusion HIVST increases the frequency of HIV testing among gay and bisexual men due, in part, to the practical, psychological, and social benefits it offers. To capitalize fully on these benefits, however, strategies to ensure the availability of highly reliable HIVST are required to sustain benefits beyond the confines of a structured research study.

Ignatenko;Abstract Recycling contributes significantly to the natural resources preservation. However since recycling technology at the same time requires primary materials and energy input, both contributing to the natural resources depletion, it is important to evaluate the resource efficiency of the whole recycling chain to determine the actual benefit of recycling. For such an evaluation exergy analysis can be used by calculation of the exergy efficiency as an indicator for the resource efficiency of the recycling chain. In this paper exergy analysis is added as a metric to the fundamental recycling system optimisation model developed previously by the authors. This addition allows evaluation and optimisation of the recycling system environmental performance on a fundamental basis, capturing exergy efficiency in the system as a function of physical, metallurgical and thermal processing and the quality of recyclates. Several car recycling scenarios have been evaluated using the fundamental recycling system optimisation model. The results reveal the influence of legislatively required recycling/recovery quotas and recycling system architecture on the environmental benefits of recycling. The results suggest that legislation does not represent the best exergy and resource efficiency of the system supporting the view that the present stringent legislation for end-of-life vehicle recycling is violating fundamental thermodynamics.

The increasing municipal solid waste generation along with the high fraction of organic waste and its unscientific disposal is leading to emission of GHG (methane, CO2, etc.) in the atmosphere. Proportion of municipal solid wastes collected by the agencies disposed at identified sites is about 60%, while the balance is disposed-off at unauthorized disposal sites leading to the environmental consequences including greenhouse gas emissions. Mitigation strategy necessitates understanding of composition of waste for its treatment and management in an environmentally sound way. The study revealed that the per capita waste generated is about 91.01± 45.5 g/day with the per capita organic waste generation of 74±35 g/person/day. The household per capita waste generation was positively related with income and education levels, while negatively related with family (household) size. The organic fractions constitute 82% with the strong recovery potential and conversion to energy or compost range. The total organic waste generated is about 231.01 Gg/year and due to mismanagement consequent emissions are about 604.80 Gg/year. Integrated solid waste management strategy is suggested to manage the organic fractions through technology and policy interventions, which helps in mitigating GHG emissions with potential economic benefits.

Unfortunately the challenges of coping with global change that it discusses have still not been addressed. Some of the facts have changed—for example, China’s per capita greenhouse gas emissions have risen significantly, although they are still far below those of the United States and most other industrialized countries. But the planet is warming faster than scientists predicted twenty years ago, and little has been done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, so the problem of climate change is even more urgent than it seemed to be when the text was first presented. Therefore my arguments about the changes we need to make to the way we live are still relevant, and it is for that reason that I have accepted the editors’ invitation to reprint the article.

Unfortunately the challenges of coping with global change that it discusses have still not been addressed. Some of the facts have changed—for example, China’s per capita greenhouse gas emissions have risen significantly, although they are still far below those of the United States and most other industrialized countries. But the planet is warming faster than scientists predicted twenty years ago, and little has been done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, so the problem of climate change is even more urgent than it seemed to be when the text was first presented. Therefore my arguments about the changes we need to make to the way we live are still relevant, and it is for that reason that I have accepted the editors’ invitation to reprint the article.

Are insects the farm animal of the future? A key agenda for agricultural production systems is the development of sustainable practices whereby food and feed can be produced in an environmentally efficient manner. These goals require novel approaches to complex problems and demand collaboration between scientists, producers, consumers, government and the general population. The provision of feed for animals is a major contributor to land and water use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Further, overfishing and a reduction in available land and water resources on which crops can be grown has led to an increase in price of protein ingredients such as fish meals and oils and soybean meals. Determination of novel solutions to meet the feed protein requirements of production animals is key to the development of sustainable farming practices. The Australian pork industry aims to develop production systems that efficiently use available resources (such as feed and energy) and limit the production of emissions (such as manure waste and GHGs). Invertebrates (insects e.g. black soldier flies) are naturally consumed by monogastric and aquatic species, yet the large-scale production of insects for feed (or food) is yet to be exploited. Most insects are low producers of GHGs and have low land and water requirements. The large-scale production of insects can contribute to a circular economy whereby food and feed waste (and potentially manure) are reduced or ideally eliminated via bioconversion. While the concept of farm-scale production of insects as domestic animal feed has been explored for decades, significant production and replacement of traditional protein sources has yet to be achieved. This review will focus on the potential role of insect-derived protein as a feed source for the Australian pig production industry.

A large amount of CO2 emission due to building energy consumption has threatened the sustainable development of the world. Improvement on the building energy performance, especially by integration with renewable energy resources has attracted interest worldwide to reduce greenhouse gas emission to make our society more sustainable. This Special Issue on building integrated renewable energy was open to all contributors in the field of building energy efficiency. The original experimental studies, numerical simulations, and reviews in all aspects of renewable energy utilization, management, and optimization have been considered. In the event, all these topics were covered in the extensive submissions accepted, but interesting papers on other aspects of building energy efficiency were also received. The purpose of this editorial is to summarize the main research findings of accepted papers in this Special Issue, including the use of renewable energy and energy saving technologies in buildings and identify a number of research questions and research directions.

Visualization increases the transparency of results and the understanding of interactions between users and energy systems. This paper presents a novel conceptual framework for integrating energy systems, infrastructure and services optimization with a visualization and simulation platform. It focuses on the development of a tool for low-carbon energy systems and high quality energy services at precinct scale. The paper describes the vision and architectural design for the integrated framework. It is expected to serve as a next generation approach to managing energy services, carbon emissions and efficient resource use in the built environment. This will help to deliver new environmentally sustainable infrastructure and achieve carbon neutrality in urban development.

A patient-centric approach that permits climate change mitigation and adaptation is proposed. Multi-stakeholder GREEN-K action and focus areas will include education, sustainable clinical care, and advances toward environmentally sustainable innovations, procurement, and infrastructure. Mindful of the disproportionately high climate impact of kidney therapies, we welcome the opportunity to work together in shared accountability to patients and Earth's natural systems.

Although nations with active forest sectors could be subject to unique factors that discourage the increased use of wood for energy, lessons learned from nations with well-developed woody biomass energy sectors could be used to assist in the development of nascent woody biomass energy sectors elsewhere. Here, energy sector data and relevant policies from Austria, Finland, Germany and Sweden (OECD countries with well-developed, modern wood energy sectors) are compared with those from Australia and Canada (OECD countries with less mature wood energy sectors). The energy sectors of the EU nations considered in this analysis exhibit striking differences with Australia and Canada. Of particular interest are critical differences in the supply of domestic primary energy, energy used per unit GDP, sovereign energy security, the mix of energy sources utilised, the economic viability of non-hydro renewables and the extent to which economies depend on fossil fuels. The policies affecting renewable energy sector development, including woody biomass availability and GHG reduction targets, also differ significantly. Adoption of new technologies with niche applications, leveraged with knowledge from the best practices and experience of countries with well-established bioenergy supply chains, represent an opportunity to set strong foundations for bioenergy production in countries with immature bioenergy sectors. Based on this analysis, it appears prima facie that the goal of reducing GHG emissions is only one of many factors that determine how much emphasis individual nations place on developing non-hydro renewable energy sectors (including woody biomass). The development of a woody biomass energy sector may be driven most strongly by regional issues, such as the need for less expensive waste disposal, cost-effective substitutions for fossil fuels, local economic development and energy resilience. © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Questions remain about understanding why HIVST encouraged testing and how such success can be translated to programmatic implementation. Methods We conducted a qualitative investigation of how FORTH participants experienced and perceived HIVST. Stratified sampling was used to recruit gay and bisexual men participating in the FORTH HIVST intervention to take part in interviews, focusing on infrequent testers and those who had received inaccurate HIVST results. Results Our analysis identified several prominent themes organized into two overarching domains from the 15 interviews: (i) aspects of HIVST contributing to HIV testing frequency, and (ii) sustaining HIVST into the future. Participants also believed that their use of HIVST in the future would depend on the test kit’s reliability, particularly when compared with highly reliable clinic-based testing. Conclusion HIVST increases the frequency of HIV testing among gay and bisexual men due, in part, to the practical, psychological, and social benefits it offers. To capitalize fully on these benefits, however, strategies to ensure the availability of highly reliable HIVST are required to sustain benefits beyond the confines of a structured research study.

Ignatenko;Abstract Recycling contributes significantly to the natural resources preservation. However since recycling technology at the same time requires primary materials and energy input, both contributing to the natural resources depletion, it is important to evaluate the resource efficiency of the whole recycling chain to determine the actual benefit of recycling. For such an evaluation exergy analysis can be used by calculation of the exergy efficiency as an indicator for the resource efficiency of the recycling chain. In this paper exergy analysis is added as a metric to the fundamental recycling system optimisation model developed previously by the authors. This addition allows evaluation and optimisation of the recycling system environmental performance on a fundamental basis, capturing exergy efficiency in the system as a function of physical, metallurgical and thermal processing and the quality of recyclates. Several car recycling scenarios have been evaluated using the fundamental recycling system optimisation model. The results reveal the influence of legislatively required recycling/recovery quotas and recycling system architecture on the environmental benefits of recycling. The results suggest that legislation does not represent the best exergy and resource efficiency of the system supporting the view that the present stringent legislation for end-of-life vehicle recycling is violating fundamental thermodynamics.

Several car recycling scenarios have been evaluated using the fundamental recycling system optimisation model. The results reveal the influence of legislatively required recycling/recovery quotas and recycling system architecture on the environmental benefits of recycling. The results suggest that legislation does not represent the best exergy and resource efficiency of the system supporting the view that the present stringent legislation for end-of-life vehicle recycling is violating fundamental thermodynamics.

The increasing municipal solid waste generation along with the high fraction of organic waste and its unscientific disposal is leading to emission of GHG (methane, CO2, etc.) in the atmosphere. Proportion of municipal solid wastes collected by the agencies disposed at identified sites is about 60%, while the balance is disposed-off at unauthorized disposal sites leading to the environmental consequences including greenhouse gas emissions. Mitigation strategy necessitates understanding of composition of waste for its treatment and management in an environmentally sound way. The study revealed that the per capita waste generated is about 91.01± 45.5 g/day with the per capita organic waste generation of 74±35 g/person/day. The household per capita waste generation was positively related with income and education levels, while negatively related with family (household) size. The organic fractions constitute 82% with the strong recovery potential and conversion to energy or compost range. The total organic waste generated is about 231.01 Gg/year and due to mismanagement consequent emissions are about 604.80 Gg/year. Integrated solid waste management strategy is suggested to manage the organic fractions through technology and policy interventions, which helps in mitigating GHG emissions with potential economic benefits.

Are insects the farm animal of the future? A key agenda for agricultural production systems is the development of sustainable practices whereby food and feed can be produced in an environmentally efficient manner. These goals require novel approaches to complex problems and demand collaboration between scientists, producers, consumers, government and the general population. The provision of feed for animals is a major contributor to land and water use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Further, overfishing and a reduction in available land and water resources on which crops can be grown has led to an increase in price of protein ingredients such as fish meals and oils and soybean meals. Determination of novel solutions to meet the feed protein requirements of production animals is key to the development of sustainable farming practices. The Australian pork industry aims to develop production systems that efficiently use available resources (such as feed and energy) and limit the production of emissions (such as manure waste and GHGs). Invertebrates (insects e.g. black soldier flies) are naturally consumed by monogastric and aquatic species, yet the large-scale production of insects for feed (or food) is yet to be exploited. Most insects are low producers of GHGs and have low land and water requirements. The large-scale production of insects can contribute to a circular economy whereby food and feed waste (and potentially manure) are reduced or ideally eliminated via bioconversion. While the concept of farm-scale production of insects as domestic animal feed has been explored for decades, significant production and replacement of traditional protein sources has yet to be achieved. This review will focus on the potential role of insect-derived protein as a feed source for the Australian pig production industry.
