At the start of the British nuclear programmes, most technological choices were made away from public scrutiny and behind closed doors. Early nuclear decision making was backed by the rationale that British citizens lacked technical and specialised knowledge to make informed decisions on nuclear questions. The emergence of public debates on nuclear risks was thus greatly hindered by limited public communication. However, this technocratic decision-making model came under fire in the wake of the 1957 Windscale accident and the rise of environmental opposition throughout the 1960s. The environmental risks of contamination, pollution, and radiation became a source of heightened tension between industry and anti-nuclear activists. This paper aims at exploring the impact of the rise in public environmental anxiety on state-sponsored television footage released between the late 1950s and the early 1980s. Analysing television footage helps identify the institutional communication strategies used to negotiate the British public’s understanding and acceptance of nuclear-induced environmental risks between 1956 and 1982. This analysis suggests that the industry’s communication approach was only cosmetically altered by this changing context. It contends that, if these cultural productions participated in constructing a more nuanced depiction of nuclear risks, they nonetheless remained based on the idea that citizen opposition mostly reflected deficiencies in scientific literacy.

The Scoping Report on the Science Communication Ecosystem represents an attempt to map the diversity of actors and the content they produce. The research conducted allows comparisons of the online science communication landscapes in different European countries (Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden, Poland, Serbia and Portugal) and has a broad focus; not only including the work of professional science communicators but also ‘alternative’ science communicators.

Why is the Chinese practice of using human body wastes as agricultural fertilizer so fascinating to Westerners? What, if anything, can the Chinese history of putting human waste to good agricultural use offer in response to modern ecological problems? In exploring these questions, this detailed monograph looks both at the history of the use of human excrement as fertilizer in China, and at the Westerners who have taken an interest in this practice. In confronting the actual history of excrement recycling in agriculture and its many interpretations, Worster challenges those who reject such practices as “backwards” or “disgusting,” as well as those who conjure up romanticized notions of peasants living in harmony with nature by reusing their natural wastes to create abundance on the land. Instead, this volume interrogates the ecological aspects and the human cost of excrement recycling, offering a clear-sighted history of the role of human “muck” in human civilization.

The relevance of the study is due to the close attention of the world community to the issues of ecology and alternative energy. Currently, the climate agenda is one of the most important topics discussed around the world. In recent years, the leading countries of the world have been concentrating on the search for new energy sources, mainly focusing on solar energy and wind power, however, insufficient attention has been paid to hydrogen energy. The main goal of the climate agenda is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Decarbonization can be achieved through the development of low-carbon industries and the transition to alternative energy sources such as hydrogen. The purpose of this work is to determine the prospects for the development of hydrogen energy and the introduction of hydrogen technologies in the real sector of the economy of the Russian Federation. Given the great dependence of the Russian Federation on traditional types of energy – oil and gas – today it is important to consider the possibility of switching to other sources of energy in order to ensure the energy security of the country in the future. The leading methods for the study of this problem are the analysis, systematization and grouping of information. The materials of the article can be used to develop the energy strategy of the Russian Federation in the future. В настоящее время климатическая повестка является одной из наиболее важных тем, обсуждаемых во всем мире. Последние годы ведущие страны мира концентрируются на поисках новых источников энергии, в основном акцент делается на солнечной энергетике и энергии ветряных станций, однако, водородной энергетике уделено недостаточное внимание. Основной целью климатической повестки является сокращение выбросов парниковых газов в атмосферу. Декарбонизация может быть достигнута за счет развития низкоуглеродных отраслей промышленности и перехода на альтернативные источники энергии, такие как водород. Целью данной работы является определение перспектив развития водородной энергетики и внедрения водородных технологий в реальный сектор экономики Российской Федерации. Учитывая большую зависимость Российской Федерации от традиционных видов энергии — нефти и газа — на сегодняшний день важно рассмотреть возможности перехода на другие источники энергетики, чтобы обеспечить энергетическую безопасность страны в будущем. Ведущими методами к исследованию данной проблемы являются анализ, систематизация и группировка информации. Материалы статьи могут быть использованы для разработки энергетической стратегии Российской Федерации в будущем.
