ABSTRACT: Tourism goes far beyond attracting tourists to paradisiacal destinations, representing an indispensable contribution to the development of a country. The growth of this sector makes it increasingly relevant to the economy, due to its influence in numerous branches that surround it. However, the resources and infrastructure needed to sustain this huge growth in the sector has led to increased pressure on natural resources, biodiversity and local communities. In a maritime-tourist context (MT) at national level, there is a scenario dominated by the reuse of old vessels or originally intended for another function without the slightest adaptation and by the use of the same vessel for different types of maritime programs. On the other hand, in the international context, maritime-touristic services are characterized by an enormous dependence on seasonality, facing a wide variation in the level of demand, further hampered by the variation of climatic conditions between seasons. In common, there is a lack of investment and innovation in the construction or reconstruction of vessels with sustainable energy sources and appropriate to the specific type of activity in which they operate. The research objectives sought to fill this gap, both in terms of adapting the vessel to the requirements of each activity, as well as adapting to the conditions imposed by seasonality, while considering the inclusion of sustainable strategies in the sector. In order to frame the theme, the requirements of the activities provided and the respective users were analyzed, the needs and limitations of the vessel, the possibilities for integrating modularity, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the propulsion sources and possible materials . In a next phase, the most relevant data were analyzed and selected for the later orientation of the project, which constitutes the next stage. In this investigation, a model was designed that could represent, in the near future, a contribution in the construction of tourist boats in modular systems. In order to achieve these objectives, a mixed methodology was applied, based on three non-interventionist and interventional qualitative methodologies. This begins with the criticism of the literature, used in the next phase to formalize and test a hypothesis through active investigation, with interviews and case studies. Then we move on to the interventionist phase of a design nature with the proposal of a model. Applying this methodology the objective will be the consolidation of the proposal so that the result of the investigation is an innovative project that responds to the current requirements of the market. The study of a modular and sustainable tourist vessel can represent a path to a viable and promising solution in this sector, with the lack of innovation and investment, environmental pressure and strong seasonality being three issues so current and close to the research area. This dissertation investigates the implementation of a technological platform for monitoring Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) metrics in the energy sector, focusing on Galp Energia, one of the leading companies in the sector in Portugal. This study is motivated by the need for the company to comply with the stringent requirements imposed by the European Union's new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The adopted platform aims to centralize and automate the management of ESG data, with the expectation of improving the accuracy, transparency, and compliance of reports. The research is based on a literature review that supports seven interviews with key personnel responsible for the project’s implementation and future users of the platform, complemented by a documentary analysis provided by Galp. This documentation includes information on the selection and development process of the platform, institutional reports, and publicly available online sources. From the literature review, it is learned that the challenges of implementing a technological platform for ESG management include the integration of data from multiple sources, the complexity of organizational adaptation, and the need to ensure consistency between operational practices and regulatory requirements. On the other hand, the benefits include increased operational efficiency, reduced costs associated with monitoring ESG indicators, and enhanced company capacity to manage sustainability in a holistic and integrated manner. Although the use of technological platforms for managing ESG metrics is a relatively recent phenomenon, there is a growing body of literature that explores its benefits and challenges. However, due to the novelty of the subject, there remains a lack of more consolidated bibliographical sources that allow for a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the long-term impact of these solutions. This gap underscores the relevance of the present study, which aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge by offering a practical and detailed view of the implementation of an ESG platform in an energy company. The case study concluded that the adoption of the technological platform could result in significant improvements in Galp Energia's ability to meet regulatory requirements and produce more comprehensive and accurate ESG reports. Furthermore, the use of a centralized tool, if successfully implemented, could provide greater agility in strategic decision-making, based on reliable and real-time data, contributing to consolidating Galp's position as a leader in sustainability within the energy sector. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Climate change is currently a major environmental, social and economic threat which the world is facing. The solid waste sector plays an important role in this fight as, according to ISWA studies, it accounts for 3 to 5% of the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and can contribute to the sequestration of about 13% of these gases. Due to the fact that deposited waste is mainly composed of organic matter, landfills are a source of biogas production, most of which is methane, which makes it 21 to 25 times (IPCC data) more harmful to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, the other major constituent of biogas. Therefore, the extraction of biogas from landfills and its burning is one of the most effective measures for reducing risks and fighting climate change. The 6 municipalities of RESULIMA deposit around 356 t / day of urban waste (2015). The degassing is done by means of wells that are usually implanted considering a 25-metre radius of influence of degassing of each well. However, it has been found that the emissions are also processed through the cover layers beyond the action of these wells and, especially during the study, through the temporary or intermediate covers carried out with soil, which it is also important to quantify. Throughout this study, continuous measurements of the biogas were carried out in the various degassing wells to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative evolution of biogas generation in the landfill over time. The historical biogas data that RESULIMA owns was also analysed, in addition to the information obtained during the study. During a second phase, with the aim of evaluating the barrier effect of the passage of gases from the intermediate cover layers, the fleeting emissions of the biogas were measured with a chamber gas-flow meter at several points of the top of the landfill, with different thicknesses, which led to the conclusion that the gas flow efficiency of the intermediate cover layers depends on the material and the thickness thereof, as well as on the operation mode and compactness of the landfill.

Silva; Catarino, Justina; Camocho, David; Alexandre, Jorge;RESUMO: O objectivo da Enterprise Europe Network é ajudar as empresas a inovar e a competir melhor internacionalmente. The growing concerns with Sustainable Development have led to the progressive re-alignment of business activities taking into account environmental and social aspects and not just those traditionally used in assessing the performance of companies, essentially economic and technical. This led to the need of updating the Value Analysis methodology, integrating the components of Sustainability in the definition of Sustainable Value. The Sustainable Value, proposed in this brochure, is an indicator calculated based on the performance versus resources involved in order to guarantee this performance. It takes into account the triple baseline os sustainability and not only economic interest, also contributing to circularity of the economy. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Climate change has for some decades been considered a real threat to cities, which are mostly not prepared to deal with the uncertainty that characterizes this phenomenon, nor with its impacts. In coastal cities, this threat is even greater because of phenomena such as the rise in mean sea level and changes in the patterns of intense short-term precipitation that exponentially increase the risk of flooding of these territories, threatening their maintenance and development in the future . In the other hand, transport systems are one of the main structures for the operation of a city, so their vulnerability to flooding can determine a high risk for one of the basic urban functions. What this paper intends is to address the vulnerability of flood transportation systems in coastal cities; how the impacts of climate change are or will be able to change the mobility patterns in a city; and how these uncertainties can be addressed through adaptive processes for resilience, with practical examples of cities that have had to deal with these issues in post-disaster situations.

ABSTRACT: The Island of Porto Santo is located in Madeira archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s ocupation is a process that lasted for about 600 years and its result can now be observed: A territory not much enhanced in the use of its landscape. The present proposal of the final master project deals with the occupation of this island in a perspective of ecological sustainability and future equilibrium. All the wounds that were (that have been) caused to this territory over the years has (have) influenced the ecological, cultural and economic growth of the Island. In what way (how) can the Island of Porto Santo become ecologically balanced and sustainable, without the constraints of the initial occupation? Addressing several case studies of islands under similar conditons, this work gradually moves towards the island in question, proposing a new way of inhabiting with the aim of contributing to the revitalization of the environmental side of the territory. Thus, as a whole, it is possible to coexist the human occupation with renewable energy, food from local agriculture and new vernacular architecture. The Landscape Laboratory is the symbiotic relationship between Man, energy and territory. N/A

However, because of the intermittent nature of the energy in solar radiation and wind, control strategies for regulating the DG power flow are necessary to ensure a proper connection of these systems to the grid. These control strategies are applied to the DG and the grid interface, which is implemented by grid-connected power converters. Grid-connected power converters can be controlled to operate as a controlled current source (grid-feeding converters) or as a controlled voltage source (grid-forming converters), in which the grid-feeding power converter (GFD-PC) systems are suitable to deliver power to an energized grid, while grid-forming power converter (GFO-PC) systems can contribute for regulating the grid voltage and frequency. When connected to a low voltage grid, GFD-PC systems can cause voltage deviation in the grid, and GFO-PC systems are subject to active and reactive power coupling. These drawbacks can be overcome with the use of the virtual impedance concept, which is a technique that can change the output impedance of power converters. Therefore, it can modify the equivalent impedance between the power converter and the grid, thus improving the power flow control of GFO-PC, and achieving voltage support of GFDPC systems. In this direction, this doctoral thesis proposes implementations of virtual impedances to overcome the drawbacks of GFO-PC and GFD-PC systems connected to the low voltage grid to meet the requirements of power flow control in DG systems.

ABSTRACT: The aim of the Enterprise Europe Network is to help companies innovate and compete better internationally. Companies wishing to innovate and compete can establish partnerships with their foreign counterparts using this network. Bust they also need instruments that allow them to assess their performance.
