The weather in these flat plains is warm and arid with very little precipitation. Different attempts in architecture have been done to alleviate the weather severity of this area and create a living place compatible with humans’ comfort criteria. Investigations have showed that some of the most successful approaches in traditional architecture of the area has been forgotten or are not being used widely. As sustainability is defined as an appropriate solution for environmental, economical, and social disorders, this research is a try to demonstrate the sustainability in aforementioned architecture and based on these studies, propounds solutions for today architecture in hot arid zones.

Beglau; Yang Li; Kenneth Lord;We have attained superior quality a-SiGe:H and nc-Si:H materials deposited at high rate, ~0.6 nm/s for a-SiGe:H and 1-1.5 nm/s for nc-Si:H, and achieved improved multi-junction solar cell performance. For a-SiGe:H based cells, we have focused our effort on further improving the a-SiGe:H film quality by carefully optimizing process parameters, particularly with Ge content and profile, hydrogen dilution, deposition pressure and substrate-tocathode distance, to fabricate a-SiGe:H films with low defect density and good stability. For nc-Si:H based solar cells, we have mainly worked on improving the spatial uniformity and homogeneous properties for nc-Si:H deposition, and on optimizing the plasma process and selecting species to deposit further improved nc-Si:H. We attained 10.1% and 11.2% stabilized efficiencies, respectively, for large-area (≥400 cm2) encapsulated a-Si:H/a-SiGe:H/a-SiGe:H and a- Si:H/nc-Si:H/nc-Si:H triple-junction cells. The article also presents the defi nition and statistical data on renewable energy. Then, it focuses on legal aspects of the building process of wind farms and biogas plants. It also points out the process of organising the project, including ensuring a legal title to lands and obtaining, apart from the building permit, some other decisions. Next, the paper raises selected issues of fi nancing the projects and of a contract engineer. Finally, it refers to the stage of operating the biogas plants and to the obligations relating to the agricultural biogas.

Biagini; M. Simone; C. Nicolella; L. Tognotti;This paper describes an ongoing development of a pilotscale biorefinery based on three facilities for the production of second generation biofuels. The project aims at assessing the feasibility of different technologies to derive biofuels from non food crops, as well as testing non conventional feedstock for the production of biofuels on a pilot scale. The three facilities are: 1) 200 kWth Gasification facility for the production of syngas equipped both with a traditional wet syngas cleanup system and an ancillary tar cracking line; 2) an oil processing plant (nominal size 30 kg/hr) 3) a bioethanol production plant. The main goals are: 1) characterization of the cleanup systems and evaluation of the optimal conditions for the production of syngas, derived from gasification of lignincellulosic biomass, ready for combustion in an ICengine as well as a Fischer & Tropsch synthesis reactor; 2) testing of nonedible oilseeds and exhaust oils for the production of biodiesel 3) optimization of process conditions for the production of bioethanol from lignocellulosic feedstock. Products, byproducts and heat recovery can be integrated among the three facilities and also with a parallel line of biomass combustion. The feasibility of the integrated system is studied with a process model developed in AspenPlus. Recent problems about fossil fuels and environmental pollution carried to an even great interest about alternative energy sources and green-energy. Conversion of biomass in energy through biochemical and thermochemical process is one of the most promising and sustainable solution and, among thermochemical processes, pyrolysis is one of the most investigated. Different setting of parameters allow obtaining various types of pyrolysis processes, resulting in a different distribution in product yield. Before designing the simulation, Authors collected some literature data about existing biomass pyrolysis plant and products obtained through different kind of this process. Layout of simulation is based on a pilot-plant located in Caltagirone (Sicily). The simulation is developed in this paper through CHEMCAD software. The work has two aims: 1. Try to enhance percentage of bio-oil production modifying operative parameter; 2. Give a preliminary parameters and results to improve the process in a real plant. Authors show a synthesis of real pyrolysis plant showing type, steam and dimension of biomass and describing operative parameters as heating rate, residence time and maximum temperature reached during the process. Moreover, there is an overview of the entire production cycle, with a description of equipment such as type of reactor, heat exchangers and equipment of gas washing section, until obtaining of final products. Process is simulated in CHEMCAD through a K-Reactor block able to reproduce the reaction that occurs during pyrolysis. After products are discharged from the reactor, solid particles are collected in a tank whereas gas fraction carry on towards the other section of the plant to be treated. Through gas washing section and cooling process, condensable fraction is obtained and liquid phase is separated from gaseous fraction. To check reliability of results, the percentages of three products are compared with the ones collected through literature researches and there is a matching between them. An innovative approach is presented that bridges the gap between agro-economic and traditional Ricardian models. We label it a ‘structural Ricardian model’. It first captures the type of crop a farmer will select and then examines the conditional net revenue of that crop. The model is estimated using a sample of over 5000 farmers across 11 countries in Africa. The analysis finds that farmers shift the crops they plant to match the climate they face. Studies that fail to account for crop switching will overestimate the damages from climate change and underestimate the benefits.

Production increased from 25 million gallons in 2004 to an estimated 250 million gallons in 2006, and many new plants are being built. Most biodiesel in the United States is produced from soybean oil, but canola offers characteristics which make it a favorable feedstock for biodiesel production. Characteristics of canola oil also make it an increasingly popular choice for human consumption. This study examines the structure of the biodiesel and canola industries. Specifically, the study describes changes in the biodiesel industry, trends in canola production in the United States and Canada, profitability and production risk for canola, the characteristics of canola oil for both human consumption and biodiesel production, the profitability of biodiesel production, and the potential to meet the demand for biodiesel production in the United States.

Econometric time-series methods were used to detect price integration, linkages, and responsiveness for each oil type and among each market. Results show that the four markets have remained price-integrated in the long run. This implies that the markets are spatially efficient. The results, however, also suggest that this level of market efficiency may have decreased to some extent after the U.S. biodiesel production surge in the mid-2000s.

Danilovic;Presented in the article are the results of the research related to the selection of the most suitable technology of forestry utilization in high beech stands upon final cutting. Research was conducted in the mountainous region of Serbia. Two methods of cutting and processing were analyzed especially from the aspect of the extent of damaging that occurs on the regeneration following the skidding of the massive wood mass thicker than 3 cm without bark. Extent of the damages is expressed by the number of damaged plants. Implementation of the semitree length method implies processing of trunk segments of optimal length from the aspect of damaging extent and maximal financial effect. By the implementation of the semitree length method major damages on the regeneration do not occur in relation to the damages that occurred by the implementation of the assortment method, or in other words, the advantage of semitree length method is that beside the technical roundwood and cordwood, a part of the branchwood, fork sections etc. is also extracted. This quantity accounts for 11% of the massive wood volume and presents potential raw material for energetic utilization. Extent of the damages depends on the dimensions of processed assortments or the length and the diameter as well as the angle that the axis of the processed assortment forms with the trail. Damages that occur when the semitree length method is implemented in the phase of skidding are significantly smaller in relation to the damages that occurred by the implementation of the assortment method in equal working conditions and besides that, the costs of skidding are also lower. By the proper selection of felling direction and formation of the optimal load in conditions of optimal accessibility, the semitree length method presents an effective technological solution for wood harvesting. Complexity of the operations increases with the increase of the height of the regeneration, so it is of special significance that the final cut is conducted on time.
