The decomposition was accomplished by reducing the pressure on a hydrate slurry in water to a value below the three-phase equilibrium pressure at the reactor temperature. The data were obtained at temperatures from 274 to 283 K and pressures from 0.17 to 6.97 MPa. The stirring rates were high enough to eliminate mass-transfer effects. Analysis of the data indicated that the decomposition rate was proportional to the particle surface area and to the difference in the fugacity of methane at the equilibrium pressure and the decomposition pressure. The proportionality constant showed an Arrhenius temperature dependence. An estimate of the hydrate particle diameters in the experiments permitted the development of an intrinsic model for the kinetics of hydrate decomposition.

Bjerke;AbstractExtreme weather events can have strong negative impacts on species survival and community structure when surpassing lethal thresholds. Extreme, short‐lived, winter warming events in the Arctic rapidly melt snow and expose ecosystems to unseasonably warm air (for instance, 2–10 °C for 2–14 days) but upon return to normal winter climate exposes the ecosystem to much colder temperatures due to the loss of insulating snow. Single events have been shown to reduce plant reproduction and increase shoot mortality, but impacts of multiple events are little understood as are the broader impacts on community structure, growth, carbon balance, and nutrient cycling. To address these issues, we simulated week‐long extreme winter warming events – using infrared heating lamps and soil warming cables – for 3 consecutive years in a sub‐Arctic heathland dominated by the dwarf shrubsEmpetrum hermaphroditum, Vaccinium vitis‐idaea(both evergreen) andVaccinium myrtillus(deciduous). During the growing seasons after the second and third winter event, spring bud burst was delayed by up to a week forE. hermaphroditumandV. myrtillus, and berry production reduced by 11–75% and 52–95% forE. hermaphroditumandV. myrtillus, respectively. Greater shoot mortality occurred inE. hermaphroditum(up to 52%),V. vitis‐idaea(51%), andV. myrtillus(80%). Root growth was reduced by more than 25% but soil nutrient availability remained unaffected. Gross primary productivity was reduced by more than 50% in the summer following the third simulation. Overall, the extent of damage was considerable, and critically plant responses were opposite in direction to the increased growth seen in long‐term summer warming simulations and the ‘greening’ seen for some arctic regions. Given the Arctic is warming more in winter than summer, and extreme events are predicted to become more frequent, this generates large uncertainty in our current understanding of arctic ecosystem responses to climate change.

They contain a high amount of digestible protein and fat and are also rich in micronutrients such as copper, iron, magnesium, selenium and zinc, as well as riboflavin, pantothenic acid and biotin. In addition, insects contain bioactive and immunostimulatory constituents such as lauric acid, antimicrobial peptides and chitin. These nutritional and functional properties make insects a promising feed ingredient to replace conventional feed ingredients and as such sustainability in animal production may be improved. In the European Union (EU), since 2017 eight insect species are authorized for aquafeed. Recent relaxation of the EU feed ban rules and animal by-products legislation on September 7, 2021, also allowed the use of insect proteins in poultry and pig diets. Among the authorized insect species, some are more promising for feed purposes as they can be theoretically mass produced. More-over, these species apply the circular economy concept by bioconverting organic substrates, which find minor applications for other purposes. Advances in the development of the European insect industry are often associated with more favourable sustainability potentials of insects, compared to traditional protein sources. For the EU there is a significant overlap in ingredient use in diets for pigs and poultry. Despite multiple studies on economic feasibility, social acceptance and environmental impact, many open questions are left for the industry to deal with. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), relying on a modular modelling approach to cover the complete spectrum of insect production and processing parameters, is a methodology which can provide viable answers and recommendations on envi-ronmental sustainability performance. For different livestock animal species, the current animal production systems, volumes of feed and composition of conven-tional diets are presented. The digestibility of insect meals and effects of their use on growth performance, product quality and health at different dietary inclusion levels are reviewed. Finally, the contribution of dietary inclusion of insect protein in animal production systems to sustainability is discussed.

Recent studies show how genetic data can inform spatial conservation prioritization (SCP), but they focus on metrics of diversity and distinctness derived primarily from neutral genetic data sets. Identifying adaptive genetic markers can provide important information regarding the capacity for populations to adapt to environmental change. Yet, the effect of including metrics based on adaptive genomic data into SCP in comparison to more widely used neutral genetic metrics has not been explored. We used existing genomic data on a commercially exploited species, the giant California sea cucumber (Parastichopus californicus), to perform SCP for the coastal region of British Columbia (BC), Canada. Using a RAD‐seq data set for 717P. californicusindividuals across 24 sampling locations, we identified putatively adaptive (i.e., candidate) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) based on genotype–environment associations with seafloor temperature. We calculated various metrics for both neutral and candidate SNPs and compared SCP outcomes with independent metrics and combinations of metrics. Priority areas varied depending on whether neutral or candidate SNPs were used and on the specific metric used. For example, targeting sites with a high frequency of warm‐temperature‐associated alleles to support persistence under future warming prioritized areas in the southern coastal region. In contrast, targeting sites with high expected heterozygosity at candidate loci to support persistence under future environmental uncertainty prioritized areas in the north. When combining metrics, all scenarios generated intermediate solutions, protecting sites that span latitudinal and thermal gradients. Our results demonstrate that distinguishing between neutral and adaptive markers can affect conservation solutions and emphasize the importance of defining objectives when choosing among various genomic metrics for SCP.

Boyce et al.1 compiled a chlorophyll index by combining in situ chlorophyll and Secchi disk depth measurements that spanned a more than 100-year time period and showed a decrease in marine phytoplankton biomass of approximately 1% of the global median per year over the past century. Eight decades of data on phytoplankton biomass collected in the North Atlantic by the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey2, however, show an increase in an index of chlorophyll (Phytoplankton Colour Index) in both the Northeast and Northwest Atlantic basins3,4,5,6,7 (Fig. 1), and other long-term time series, including the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT)8, the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series (BATS)8 and the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI)9 also indicate increased phytoplankton biomass over the last 20–50 years. These findings, which were not discussed by Boyce et al.1, are not in accordance with their conclusions and illustrate the importance of using consistent observations when estimating long-term trends.

Hattel;In the present study, a coupled 3D transient Eulerian thermo-chemical analysis together with a 2D plane strain Lagrangian mechanical analysis of the pultrusion process, which has not been considered until now, is carried out. The development of the process induced residual stresses and strains together with the distortions are predicted during the pultrusion in which the cure hardening instantaneous linear elastic (CHILE) approach is implemented. At the end of the process, tension stresses prevail for the inner region of the composite since the curing rate is higher here as compared to the outer regions where compression stresses are obtained. The separation between the heating die and the part due to shrinkage is also investigated using a mechanical contact formulation at the die-part interface. The proposed approach is found to be efficient and fast for the calculation of the residual stresses and distortions together with the temperature and the cure distributions.

AbstractEcosystem functioning is simultaneously affected by changes in community composition and environmental change such as increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and subsequent ocean acidification. However, it largely remains uncertain how the effects of these factors compare to each other. Addressing this question, we experimentally tested the hypothesis that initial community composition and elevatedCO2are equally important to the regulation of phytoplankton biomass. We full‐factorially exposed three compositionally different marine phytoplankton communities to two differentCO2levels and examined the effects and relative importance (ω2) of the two factors and their interaction on phytoplankton biomass at bloom peak. The results showed that initial community composition had a significantly greater impact than elevatedCO2on phytoplankton biomass, which varied largely among communities. We suggest that the different initial ratios between cyanobacteria, diatoms, and dinoflagellates might be the key for the varying competitive and thus functional outcome among communities. Furthermore, the results showed that depending on initial community composition elevatedCO2selected for larger sized diatoms, which led to increased total phytoplankton biomass. This study highlights the relevance of initial community composition, which strongly drives the functional outcome, when assessing impacts of climate change on ecosystem functioning. In particular, the increase in phytoplankton biomass driven by the gain of larger sized diatoms in response to elevatedCO2potentially has strong implications for nutrient cycling and carbon export in future oceans.

The anthropogenic demand for marine resources and space exerts the need for novel concepts for sustainable resource exploitation and smart space allocation. Multi-Use (MU) is an emerging concept to overcome spatial claims and support Blue Growth, however its actual potentials and current status of implementation in different sea basins is to a large extent unexplored. An analytical framework using a mixed method approach is proposed for the identification and analysis of MU potentialities in eight EU countries of the Euro-Mediterranean sea basin. The paper addresses opportunities and challenges of ten existing and potential MU combinations driven by three maritime sectors: tourism, renewable energy and Oil & Gas industry. Opportunities and challenges for MU development were presented in terms of drivers, added values, barriers and impacts. Results show that highest potential for MU development are related to tourism-driven MU combinations (e.g. pescatourism), but also emerging MU potentials exist related to Floating Offshore Wind energy and aquaculture (Gulf of Lion) and the re-use of Oil & Gas decommissioned platforms (Northern-Central Adriatic Sea). Findings were discussed for their geospatial distribution and their policy, socio-economic, technical and environmental boundary conditions. Recommendations on actions to foster MU development in the Euro-Mediterranean sea space are provided.

Emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from marine sediments are controlled by anaerobic oxidation of methane coupled primarily to sulphate reduction (AOM). Sulphate-coupled AOM is believed to be mediated by a consortium of methanotrophic archaea (ANME) and sulphate-reducing Deltaproteobacteria but the underlying mechanism has not yet been resolved. Here we show that zero-valent sulphur compounds (S(0)) are formed during AOM through a new pathway for dissimilatory sulphate reduction performed by the methanotrophic archaea. Hence, AOM might not be an obligate syntrophic process but may be carried out by the ANME alone. Furthermore, we show that the produced S(0)--in the form of disulphide--is disproportionated by the Deltaproteobacteria associated with the ANME. Our observations expand the diversity of known microbially mediated sulphur transformations and have significant implications for our understanding of the biogeochemical carbon and sulphur cycles.

Hattel;Pultrusion is one of the most effective manufacturing processes for producing composites with constant cross-sectional profiles. This obviously makes it more attractive for both researchers and practitioners to investigate the optimum process parameters, i.e. pulling speed, power and dimensions of the heating platens, length and width of the heating die, design of the resin injection chamber, etc., to provide better understanding of the process, consequently to improve the efficiency of the process as well the product quality. Numerous simulation approaches have been presented until now. However, optimization studies had been limited with either experimental cases or determining only one objective to improve one aspect of the performance of the process. This objective is either augmented by other process related criteria or subjected to constraints which might have had the same importance of being treated as objectives. In essence, these approaches convert a true multi-objective optimization problem (MOP) into a single-objective optimization problem (SOP). This transformation obviously results in only one optimum solution and it does not support the efforts to get more out of an optimization study, such as relations between variables and objectives or constraints. In this study, an MOP considering thermo-chemical aspects of the pultrusion process (e.g. cure degree, temperatures), in which the pulling speed is maximized and the heating power is minimized simultaneously (without defining any preference between them), has been formulated. An evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO) algorithm, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II [Deb et al., 2002]), has been used to solve this MOP in an ideal way where the outcome is the set of multiple solutions (i.e. Pareto-optimal solutions) and each solution is theoretically an optimal solution corresponding to a particular trade-off among objectives. Following the solution process, in other words obtaining the Pareto-optimal front, a further postprocessing study has been performed to unveil some common principles existing between the variables, the objectives and the constraints either along the whole front or in some portion of it. These relationships will reveal a design philosophy not only for the improvement of the process efficiency, but also a methodology to design a pultrusion die for different operating conditions.

The decomposition was accomplished by reducing the pressure on a hydrate slurry in water to a value below the three-phase equilibrium pressure at the reactor temperature. The data were obtained at temperatures from 274 to 283 K and pressures from 0.17 to 6.97 MPa. The stirring rates were high enough to eliminate mass-transfer effects. Analysis of the data indicated that the decomposition rate was proportional to the particle surface area and to the difference in the fugacity of methane at the equilibrium pressure and the decomposition pressure. The proportionality constant showed an Arrhenius temperature dependence. An estimate of the hydrate particle diameters in the experiments permitted the development of an intrinsic model for the kinetics of hydrate decomposition.

Extreme, short‐lived, winter warming events in the Arctic rapidly melt snow and expose ecosystems to unseasonably warm air (for instance, 2–10 °C for 2–14 days) but upon return to normal winter climate exposes the ecosystem to much colder temperatures due to the loss of insulating snow. Single events have been shown to reduce plant reproduction and increase shoot mortality, but impacts of multiple events are little understood as are the broader impacts on community structure, growth, carbon balance, and nutrient cycling. To address these issues, we simulated week‐long extreme winter warming events – using infrared heating lamps and soil warming cables – for 3 consecutive years in a sub‐Arctic heathland dominated by the dwarf shrubsEmpetrum hermaphroditum, Vaccinium vitis‐idaea(both evergreen) andVaccinium myrtillus(deciduous). During the growing seasons after the second and third winter event, spring bud burst was delayed by up to a week forE. hermaphroditumandV. myrtillus, and berry production reduced by 11–75% and 52–95% forE. hermaphroditumandV. myrtillus, respectively. Greater shoot mortality occurred inE. hermaphroditum(up to 52%),V. vitis‐idaea(51%), andV. myrtillus(80%). Root growth was reduced by more than 25% but soil nutrient availability remained unaffected. Gross primary productivity was reduced by more than 50% in the summer following the third simulation. Overall, the extent of damage was considerable, and critically plant responses were opposite in direction to the increased growth seen in long‐term summer warming simulations and the ‘greening’ seen for some arctic regions. Given the Arctic is warming more in winter than summer, and extreme events are predicted to become more frequent, this generates large uncertainty in our current understanding of arctic ecosystem responses to climate change.

They contain a high amount of digestible protein and fat and are also rich in micronutrients such as copper, iron, magnesium, selenium and zinc, as well as riboflavin, pantothenic acid and biotin. In addition, insects contain bioactive and immunostimulatory constituents such as lauric acid, antimicrobial peptides and chitin. These nutritional and functional properties make insects a promising feed ingredient to replace conventional feed ingredients and as such sustainability in animal production may be improved. In the European Union (EU), since 2017 eight insect species are authorized for aquafeed. Recent relaxation of the EU feed ban rules and animal by-products legislation on September 7, 2021, also allowed the use of insect proteins in poultry and pig diets. Among the authorized insect species, some are more promising for feed purposes as they can be theoretically mass produced. More-over, these species apply the circular economy concept by bioconverting organic substrates, which find minor applications for other purposes. Advances in the development of the European insect industry are often associated with more favourable sustainability potentials of insects, compared to traditional protein sources. For the EU there is a significant overlap in ingredient use in diets for pigs and poultry. Despite multiple studies on economic feasibility, social acceptance and environmental impact, many open questions are left for the industry to deal with. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), relying on a modular modelling approach to cover the complete spectrum of insect production and processing parameters, is a methodology which can provide viable answers and recommendations on envi-ronmental sustainability performance. For different livestock animal species, the current animal production systems, volumes of feed and composition of conven-tional diets are presented. The digestibility of insect meals and effects of their use on growth performance, product quality and health at different dietary inclusion levels are reviewed. Finally, the contribution of dietary inclusion of insect protein in animal production systems to sustainability is discussed.

Recent studies show how genetic data can inform spatial conservation prioritization (SCP), but they focus on metrics of diversity and distinctness derived primarily from neutral genetic data sets. Identifying adaptive genetic markers can provide important information regarding the capacity for populations to adapt to environmental change. Yet, the effect of including metrics based on adaptive genomic data into SCP in comparison to more widely used neutral genetic metrics has not been explored. We used existing genomic data on a commercially exploited species, the giant California sea cucumber (Parastichopus californicus), to perform SCP for the coastal region of British Columbia (BC), Canada. Using a RAD‐seq data set for 717P. californicusindividuals across 24 sampling locations, we identified putatively adaptive (i.e., candidate) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) based on genotype–environment associations with seafloor temperature. We calculated various metrics for both neutral and candidate SNPs and compared SCP outcomes with independent metrics and combinations of metrics. Priority areas varied depending on whether neutral or candidate SNPs were used and on the specific metric used. For example, targeting sites with a high frequency of warm‐temperature‐associated alleles to support persistence under future warming prioritized areas in the southern coastal region. In contrast, targeting sites with high expected heterozygosity at candidate loci to support persistence under future environmental uncertainty prioritized areas in the north. When combining metrics, all scenarios generated intermediate solutions, protecting sites that span latitudinal and thermal gradients. Our results demonstrate that distinguishing between neutral and adaptive markers can affect conservation solutions and emphasize the importance of defining objectives when choosing among various genomic metrics for SCP.

Eight decades of data on phytoplankton biomass collected in the North Atlantic by the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey2, however, show an increase in an index of chlorophyll (Phytoplankton Colour Index) in both the Northeast and Northwest Atlantic basins3,4,5,6,7 (Fig. 1), and other long-term time series, including the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT)8, the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series (BATS)8 and the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI)9 also indicate increased phytoplankton biomass over the last 20–50 years. These findings, which were not discussed by Boyce et al.1, are not in accordance with their conclusions and illustrate the importance of using consistent observations when estimating long-term trends.

Hattel;In the present study, a coupled 3D transient Eulerian thermo-chemical analysis together with a 2D plane strain Lagrangian mechanical analysis of the pultrusion process, which has not been considered until now, is carried out. The development of the process induced residual stresses and strains together with the distortions are predicted during the pultrusion in which the cure hardening instantaneous linear elastic (CHILE) approach is implemented. At the end of the process, tension stresses prevail for the inner region of the composite since the curing rate is higher here as compared to the outer regions where compression stresses are obtained. The separation between the heating die and the part due to shrinkage is also investigated using a mechanical contact formulation at the die-part interface. The proposed approach is found to be efficient and fast for the calculation of the residual stresses and distortions together with the temperature and the cure distributions.

AbstractEcosystem functioning is simultaneously affected by changes in community composition and environmental change such as increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and subsequent ocean acidification. However, it largely remains uncertain how the effects of these factors compare to each other. Addressing this question, we experimentally tested the hypothesis that initial community composition and elevatedCO2are equally important to the regulation of phytoplankton biomass. We full‐factorially exposed three compositionally different marine phytoplankton communities to two differentCO2levels and examined the effects and relative importance (ω2) of the two factors and their interaction on phytoplankton biomass at bloom peak. The results showed that initial community composition had a significantly greater impact than elevatedCO2on phytoplankton biomass, which varied largely among communities. We suggest that the different initial ratios between cyanobacteria, diatoms, and dinoflagellates might be the key for the varying competitive and thus functional outcome among communities. Furthermore, the results showed that depending on initial community composition elevatedCO2selected for larger sized diatoms, which led to increased total phytoplankton biomass. This study highlights the relevance of initial community composition, which strongly drives the functional outcome, when assessing impacts of climate change on ecosystem functioning. In particular, the increase in phytoplankton biomass driven by the gain of larger sized diatoms in response to elevatedCO2potentially has strong implications for nutrient cycling and carbon export in future oceans.

The anthropogenic demand for marine resources and space exerts the need for novel concepts for sustainable resource exploitation and smart space allocation. Multi-Use (MU) is an emerging concept to overcome spatial claims and support Blue Growth, however its actual potentials and current status of implementation in different sea basins is to a large extent unexplored. An analytical framework using a mixed method approach is proposed for the identification and analysis of MU potentialities in eight EU countries of the Euro-Mediterranean sea basin. The paper addresses opportunities and challenges of ten existing and potential MU combinations driven by three maritime sectors: tourism, renewable energy and Oil & Gas industry. Opportunities and challenges for MU development were presented in terms of drivers, added values, barriers and impacts. Results show that highest potential for MU development are related to tourism-driven MU combinations (e.g. pescatourism), but also emerging MU potentials exist related to Floating Offshore Wind energy and aquaculture (Gulf of Lion) and the re-use of Oil & Gas decommissioned platforms (Northern-Central Adriatic Sea). Findings were discussed for their geospatial distribution and their policy, socio-economic, technical and environmental boundary conditions. Recommendations on actions to foster MU development in the Euro-Mediterranean sea space are provided.

Emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from marine sediments are controlled by anaerobic oxidation of methane coupled primarily to sulphate reduction (AOM). Sulphate-coupled AOM is believed to be mediated by a consortium of methanotrophic archaea (ANME) and sulphate-reducing Deltaproteobacteria but the underlying mechanism has not yet been resolved. Here we show that zero-valent sulphur compounds (S(0)) are formed during AOM through a new pathway for dissimilatory sulphate reduction performed by the methanotrophic archaea. Hence, AOM might not be an obligate syntrophic process but may be carried out by the ANME alone. Furthermore, we show that the produced S(0)--in the form of disulphide--is disproportionated by the Deltaproteobacteria associated with the ANME. Our observations expand the diversity of known microbially mediated sulphur transformations and have significant implications for our understanding of the biogeochemical carbon and sulphur cycles.

Hattel;Pultrusion is one of the most effective manufacturing processes for producing composites with constant cross-sectional profiles. This obviously makes it more attractive for both researchers and practitioners to investigate the optimum process parameters, i.e. pulling speed, power and dimensions of the heating platens, length and width of the heating die, design of the resin injection chamber, etc., to provide better understanding of the process, consequently to improve the efficiency of the process as well the product quality. Numerous simulation approaches have been presented until now. However, optimization studies had been limited with either experimental cases or determining only one objective to improve one aspect of the performance of the process. This objective is either augmented by other process related criteria or subjected to constraints which might have had the same importance of being treated as objectives. In essence, these approaches convert a true multi-objective optimization problem (MOP) into a single-objective optimization problem (SOP). This transformation obviously results in only one optimum solution and it does not support the efforts to get more out of an optimization study, such as relations between variables and objectives or constraints. In this study, an MOP considering thermo-chemical aspects of the pultrusion process (e.g. cure degree, temperatures), in which the pulling speed is maximized and the heating power is minimized simultaneously (without defining any preference between them), has been formulated. An evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO) algorithm, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II [Deb et al., 2002]), has been used to solve this MOP in an ideal way where the outcome is the set of multiple solutions (i.e. Pareto-optimal solutions) and each solution is theoretically an optimal solution corresponding to a particular trade-off among objectives. Following the solution process, in other words obtaining the Pareto-optimal front, a further postprocessing study has been performed to unveil some common principles existing between the variables, the objectives and the constraints either along the whole front or in some portion of it. These relationships will reveal a design philosophy not only for the improvement of the process efficiency, but also a methodology to design a pultrusion die for different operating conditions.
