An extensive experimental investigation was carried out to study the energy absorbing characteristics and progressive deformation behavior of unidirectional pultruded composite tubes subjected to an axial impact load. Pultruded square and circular profiles with glass-polyester and glass-vinylester combinations were used to study the specific energy absorption characteristics. Two types of triggering profiles were incorporated to investigate the effect of triggering on energy absorption. All the above combinations were investigated for three impact velocities. The effects of geometry profile, triggering and strain rate on energy absorption of composite tubes were studied in detail. A numerical simulation using finite element method was carried out to assess the energy absorption capability of composite tubes. To model the delamination between the composite plies, a new approach was adopted using cohesive elements. The progressive failure modes and crushing characteristics of the composite tubes are presented. From these studies, the composite tubes can be considered as energy absorbing members for impact applications.

There is a growing need to assist those who have suffered an amputation due to vascular diseases, especially in those who have general lower limb weakness and need additional assistance to retain independence and overall quality of life. The CYBERLEGs system is a new artificial physical and cognitive lower-limb replacement system for dysvascular transfemoral amputees intended for assistance in activities of daily living. By lowering the cognitive and metabolic effort of using a prosthetic system, CYBERLEGs is intended to increase the number of amputees using prosthetic systems as well as expand the capabilities of those who use currently available technology.

Sustainable agriculture leads today to important questions about the diversification of agricultural production and sources of income for farmers, the use of rural and arable land for food and non-food crops, the contribution of agriculture to climate change fighting and the supply of renewable energy. Bioenergy from agriculture is at the heart of these concerns, integrating sustainable development key components: environment and climate change, energy economics and energy supply, agriculture, rural and social development. The lack of primary and reliable data on bioenergy externalities from agriculture and the lack of decision-making tools are important non-technological barriers to the development of bioenergy from agriculture on a large scale, and, consequently, to the achievement of the national and regional objectives of sustainable development with respect to greenhouse gas mitigation, secure and diversified energy supply, rural development and employment and the future of agriculture. Furthermore, the recent worldwide controversies about transport biofuels, food shortages and increasing prices have demonstrated the urgent need for sustainability criteria applied to biofuels and bioenergy. Within this current sustainable development framework, a project entitled TEXBIAG integrating experts from 4 research institutions is financed by the Belgian Science Policy. The final objective of this project is to lead to an actual and significant contribution of bioenergy from agriculture to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, to a secure and diversified energy supply and to farmers' incomes and rural development. To reach this final objective, the project develops three specific tools: (1) a database of primary quantitative data related to environmental and socio-economic impacts of bioenergy from agriculture integrating biomass logistics; (2) a mathematical model monetizing bioenergy externalities from agriculture; and (3) a prediction tool assessing the impacts of political decisions made in the framework ofthe development of bioenergy from agriculture on different economic sectors (energy, agriculture, industry, and environment). Sustainable agriculture leads today to important questions about the diversification of agricultural production and sources of income for farmers, the use of rural and arable land for food and non-food crops, the contribution of agriculture to climate change fighting and the supply of renewable energy. Bioenergy from agriculture is at the heart of these concerns, integrating sustainable development key components: environment and climate change, energy economics and energy supply, agriculture, rural and social development. The lack of primary and reliable data on bioenergy externalities from agriculture and the lack of decision-making tools are important non-technological barriers to the development of bioenergy from agriculture on a large scale, and, consequently, to the achievement of the national and regional objectives of sustainable development with respect to greenhouse gas mitigation, secure and diversified energy supply, rural development and employment and the future of agriculture. Furthermore, the recent worldwide controversies about transport biofuels, food shortages and increasing prices have demonstrated the urgent need for sustainability criteria applied to biofuels and bioenergy. Within this current sustainable development framework, a project entitled TEXBIAG integrating experts from 4 research institutions is financed by the Belgian Science Policy. The final objective of this project is to lead to an actual and significant contribution of bioenergy from agriculture to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, to a secure and diversified energy supply and to farmers' incomes and rural development. To reach this final objective, the project develops three specific tools: (1) a database of primary quantitative data related to environmental and socio-economic impacts of bioenergy from agriculture integrating biomass logistics; (2) a mathematical model monetizing bioenergy externalities from agriculture; and (3) a prediction tool assessing the impacts of political decisions made in the framework ofthe development of bioenergy from agriculture on different economic sectors (energy, agriculture, industry, and environment). There is a growing awareness of the valuable nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) being lost in conventional wastewater treatment systems. Although the removal of these nutrients has been well addressed, efforts for nutrient recovery have seen little development. As the emphasis on sustainability in the wastewater treatment industry increases, conventional wastewater treatment processes are being re-evaluated and new treatment systems developed. A possible nutrient recovery mechanism is the precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate (MgNH4PO4·6H2O), commonly known as struvite. Human urine has been identified as a rich source of nutrients in wastewater; hence the separate collection of urine is considered a viable method of enabling struvite recovery. Since dilution of urine to a certain degree is inevitable, reconcentration of urine beyond the solubility limit of struvite is critical. Currently available methods for reconcentration (e.g., evaporation, freeze-thaw, reverse osmosis and electrodialysis) are relatively expensive with high energy demand. Thus, the research here aims to demonstrate nutrient reconcentration from diluted urine and simultaneous organic removal by using the principles of microbial desalination cells (MDCs), where energy released from organic oxidation is partially used for the separation of nutrient ions. With reduced energy demand, a sustainable method for the utilization of source-separated urine is examined. The performance of bioelectrochemical systems relies on the activity of exoelectrogenic bacteria to transfer electrons to the anode. An examination of exoelectrogen sensitivity at various wastewater treatment conditions (i.e. ammonia and oxygen) is an important component of this research. Methanogenesis is considered the greatest challenge in achieving practical applications in anaerobic bioelectrochemical systems. As energy efficiency becomes one of the key points in the design of most of today's power hungry applications, new and energy efficient approaches and associated technologies find their way towards the customer. Electric double layer capacitors, also known as supercapacitors, are one of these new and interesting products creating new possibilities and solutions to some of today's questions concerning energy efficiency in certain applications. This paper will have a look at the implementation of supercapacitors as peak power unit and energy reservoir in personnel transport system applications, particularly elevator applications. Elevators were and still are built with an energy dissipating resistor to convert the electric braking energy into heat. In the present energy saving economy, this sounds as an inappropriate loss of energy requiring an alternative. Current research involves the use of supercapacitors in elevators to replace this energy dissipating resistor and store the energy in supercapacitors. Thesaved and stored energy can then be reused to power the elevator (e.g. smooth power peaks) or to send energy back to the main power net. This paper presents a basic simulation model along with comments on the supercapacitor pack dimensioning. A cost-benefit analysis, based on the rudimentary model and measurements, concludes the paper.

The impact of the aviation sector on climate change - a multicriteria analysis of possible policy measures

The aviation sector generates specific emissions having an impact on climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change special report on aviation (1999) has revealed the importance of those impacts on global warming. Its total climate impact is by far more important than only its CO2 emission climate impact. In addition to CO2, also condensation trails, NOx emissions and cirrus cloud formation have a significant impact on climate change. Despite these statements, yet, emissions from international air are not targeted by the Kyoto Protocol commitments. Different policy measures may thus be considered for the inclusion and integration of international air transport into climate policy. The analysis of such possible measures is of particular interest for Belgium, given the importance of this sector in its economy and territory. Belgium has also considerable number of overflights due to his location in the so-called FLAP zone (Frankfurt-London-Amsterdam-Paris). There are several ranges of measures to reduce the impact of aviation emissions, including changes in aircraft and engine technology, fuel, operational practices, and regulatory and economic measures (IPCC , 1999). Research on global environmental change increasingly takes place in interdisciplinary teams, in which scientists in different fields have regular discussions and dialogues, and think together in an interdisciplinary way (Welpa et al., 2006). On the basis of these considerations the Aviation and the Belgian Climate Policy Impact (ABCI) Project was charged to provide an in-depth analysis and assessment, from a technical, environmental and an economic point of view. In the attempt to integrate the findings on aviation and Belgian climate policy with other issues of concern - such as the other environmental impacts related to air transport it was decided to use a Multicriteria analysis. The intention of this paper is principally to show the Multicriteria analysis methodology with the software application related to a complex decision problem on behalf of sustainable transport policy support.

The impact of the aviation sector on climate change - a multicriteria analysis of possible policy measures

The aviation sector generates specific emissions having an impact on climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change special report on aviation (1999) has revealed the importance of those impacts on global warming. Its total climate impact is by far more important than only its CO2 emission climate impact. In addition to CO2, also condensation trails, NOx emissions and cirrus cloud formation have a significant impact on climate change. Despite these statements, yet, emissions from international air are not targeted by the Kyoto Protocol commitments. Different policy measures may thus be considered for the inclusion and integration of international air transport into climate policy. The analysis of such possible measures is of particular interest for Belgium, given the importance of this sector in its economy and territory. Belgium has also considerable number of overflights due to his location in the so-called FLAP zone (Frankfurt-London-Amsterdam-Paris). There are several ranges of measures to reduce the impact of aviation emissions, including changes in aircraft and engine technology, fuel, operational practices, and regulatory and economic measures (IPCC , 1999). Research on global environmental change increasingly takes place in interdisciplinary teams, in which scientists in different fields have regular discussions and dialogues, and think together in an interdisciplinary way (Welpa et al., 2006). On the basis of these considerations the Aviation and the Belgian Climate Policy Impact (ABCI) Project was charged to provide an in-depth analysis and assessment, from a technical, environmental and an economic point of view. In the attempt to integrate the findings on aviation and Belgian climate policy with other issues of concern - such as the other environmental impacts related to air transport it was decided to use a Multicriteria analysis. The intention of this paper is principally to show the Multicriteria analysis methodology with the software application related to a complex decision problem on behalf of sustainable transport policy support.

An extensive experimental investigation was carried out to study the energy absorbing characteristics and progressive deformation behavior of unidirectional pultruded composite tubes subjected to an axial impact load. Pultruded square and circular profiles with glass-polyester and glass-vinylester combinations were used to study the specific energy absorption characteristics. Two types of triggering profiles were incorporated to investigate the effect of triggering on energy absorption. All the above combinations were investigated for three impact velocities. The effects of geometry profile, triggering and strain rate on energy absorption of composite tubes were studied in detail. A numerical simulation using finite element method was carried out to assess the energy absorption capability of composite tubes. To model the delamination between the composite plies, a new approach was adopted using cohesive elements. The progressive failure modes and crushing characteristics of the composite tubes are presented. From these studies, the composite tubes can be considered as energy absorbing members for impact applications.

There is a growing need to assist those who have suffered an amputation due to vascular diseases, especially in those who have general lower limb weakness and need additional assistance to retain independence and overall quality of life. The CYBERLEGs system is a new artificial physical and cognitive lower-limb replacement system for dysvascular transfemoral amputees intended for assistance in activities of daily living. By lowering the cognitive and metabolic effort of using a prosthetic system, CYBERLEGs is intended to increase the number of amputees using prosthetic systems as well as expand the capabilities of those who use currently available technology.

Sustainable agriculture leads today to important questions about the diversification of agricultural production and sources of income for farmers, the use of rural and arable land for food and non-food crops, the contribution of agriculture to climate change fighting and the supply of renewable energy. Bioenergy from agriculture is at the heart of these concerns, integrating sustainable development key components: environment and climate change, energy economics and energy supply, agriculture, rural and social development. The lack of primary and reliable data on bioenergy externalities from agriculture and the lack of decision-making tools are important non-technological barriers to the development of bioenergy from agriculture on a large scale, and, consequently, to the achievement of the national and regional objectives of sustainable development with respect to greenhouse gas mitigation, secure and diversified energy supply, rural development and employment and the future of agriculture. Furthermore, the recent worldwide controversies about transport biofuels, food shortages and increasing prices have demonstrated the urgent need for sustainability criteria applied to biofuels and bioenergy. Within this current sustainable development framework, a project entitled TEXBIAG integrating experts from 4 research institutions is financed by the Belgian Science Policy. The final objective of this project is to lead to an actual and significant contribution of bioenergy from agriculture to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, to a secure and diversified energy supply and to farmers' incomes and rural development. To reach this final objective, the project develops three specific tools: (1) a database of primary quantitative data related to environmental and socio-economic impacts of bioenergy from agriculture integrating biomass logistics; (2) a mathematical model monetizing bioenergy externalities from agriculture; and (3) a prediction tool assessing the impacts of political decisions made in the framework ofthe development of bioenergy from agriculture on different economic sectors (energy, agriculture, industry, and environment). An integrated interface tool will be programmed where access to and update of the three tools will be prepared. The project methodology will be conducted for a given number of scenarios with sensitivity analysis wherever possible. The three main target groups that will benefit from the project are: the government officials and policy makers in the field of agriculture, energy and environment in Belgium and its two main regions, the small, medium and large energy companies and the agricultural sector

Sustainable Wastewater Treatment: Nutrient Separation, Energy Recovery and Water Reuse

There is a growing awareness of the valuable nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) being lost in conventional wastewater treatment systems. Although the removal of these nutrients has been well addressed, efforts for nutrient recovery have seen little development. As the emphasis on sustainability in the wastewater treatment industry increases, conventional wastewater treatment processes are being re-evaluated and new treatment systems developed. A possible nutrient recovery mechanism is the precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate (MgNH4PO4·6H2O), commonly known as struvite. Human urine has been identified as a rich source of nutrients in wastewater; hence the separate collection of urine is considered a viable method of enabling struvite recovery. Since dilution of urine to a certain degree is inevitable, reconcentration of urine beyond the solubility limit of struvite is critical. Currently available methods for reconcentration (e.g., evaporation, freeze-thaw, reverse osmosis and electrodialysis) are relatively expensive with high energy demand. Thus, the research here aims to demonstrate nutrient reconcentration from diluted urine and simultaneous organic removal by using the principles of microbial desalination cells (MDCs), where energy released from organic oxidation is partially used for the separation of nutrient ions. With reduced energy demand, a sustainable method for the utilization of source-separated urine is examined. The performance of bioelectrochemical systems relies on the activity of exoelectrogenic bacteria to transfer electrons to the anode. An examination of exoelectrogen sensitivity at various wastewater treatment conditions (i.e. ammonia and oxygen) is an important component of this research. Methanogenesis is considered the greatest challenge in achieving practical applications in anaerobic bioelectrochemical systems. As energy efficiency becomes one of the key points in the design of most of today's power hungry applications, new and energy efficient approaches and associated technologies find their way towards the customer. Electric double layer capacitors, also known as supercapacitors, are one of these new and interesting products creating new possibilities and solutions to some of today's questions concerning energy efficiency in certain applications. This paper will have a look at the implementation of supercapacitors as peak power unit and energy reservoir in personnel transport system applications, particularly elevator applications. Elevators were and still are built with an energy dissipating resistor to convert the electric braking energy into heat. In the present energy saving economy, this sounds as an inappropriate loss of energy requiring an alternative. Current research involves the use of supercapacitors in elevators to replace this energy dissipating resistor and store the energy in supercapacitors. Thesaved and stored energy can then be reused to power the elevator (e.g. smooth power peaks) or to send energy back to the main power net. This paper presents a basic simulation model along with comments on the supercapacitor pack dimensioning. A cost-benefit analysis, based on the rudimentary model and measurements, concludes the paper.

The impact of the aviation sector on climate change - a multicriteria analysis of possible policy measures

The aviation sector generates specific emissions having an impact on climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change special report on aviation (1999) has revealed the importance of those impacts on global warming. Its total climate impact is by far more important than only its CO2 emission climate impact. In addition to CO2, also condensation trails, NOx emissions and cirrus cloud formation have a significant impact on climate change. Despite these statements, yet, emissions from international air are not targeted by the Kyoto Protocol commitments. Different policy measures may thus be considered for the inclusion and integration of international air transport into climate policy. The analysis of such possible measures is of particular interest for Belgium, given the importance of this sector in its economy and territory. Belgium has also considerable number of overflights due to his location in the so-called FLAP zone (Frankfurt-London-Amsterdam-Paris). There are several ranges of measures to reduce the impact of aviation emissions, including changes in aircraft and engine technology, fuel, operational practices, and regulatory and economic measures (IPCC , 1999). Research on global environmental change increasingly takes place in interdisciplinary teams, in which scientists in different fields have regular discussions and dialogues, and think together in an interdisciplinary way (Welpa et al., 2006). On the basis of these considerations the Aviation and the Belgian Climate Policy Impact (ABCI) Project was charged to provide an in-depth analysis and assessment, from a technical, environmental and an economic point of view. In the attempt to integrate the findings on aviation and Belgian climate policy with other issues of concern - such as the other environmental impacts related to air transport it was decided to use a Multicriteria analysis. The intention of this paper is principally to show the Multicriteria analysis methodology with the software application related to a complex decision problem on behalf of sustainable transport policy support.
